My reasoning:If you listen to Patti, even back then, softer lines still sound heavy and a bit loud.

When she sings with Cydni, the light mixes she does still kind of overpower the "true colors" singer. Whitney always had this tiny sound that could bloom into a surprisingly bold phrase. When Patti does this, it isn't as surprising because the voice has a natural weight throughout.

I think if she did become a dramatic soprano, she would've lost that endearing lyric quality. "All the man I need" "Don't Cry For Me" would sound very, very different.

And I thought she did mix but used a chestier mix? How on Earth did she do "Hold Up the Light" that easily when it was on E/Fs?

Then again, I guess we'll never know :(. It seems like spintos/dramatics are somewhat interchangeable until trained.theitfactornoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341723937148634092.post-5293934325316717882014-05-20T00:06:14.289+01:002014-05-20T00:06:14.289+01:00their*their*YaBoy Jnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341723937148634092.post-81896557983847988702014-05-20T00:05:50.533+01:002014-05-20T00:05:50.533+01:00No, they're Sopranos. You have a large voice, massive weight with a metallic quality to the tone. But tessitura? No, it's high. Not always, there are some different cases but essentially they should be high. They just lack the size brightness and smaller size the other fachs do.
Training? I'm not sure if she did. She tends to sing with some awful methods and training would exempt one from the many mistakes Patti seems to make. So based on that, no. I don't think she's had any vocal training.YaBoy Jnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341723937148634092.post-1903576003734412322014-05-19T23:38:43.058+01:002014-05-19T23:38:43.058+01:00Patti Labelle's voice didn't mature into t...Patti Labelle's voice didn't mature into that of a "Full- Dramatic Soprano" until the Mid- 1980's when she entered her 40's. She was, undoubtedly, a "Standard- Spinto Soprano" throughout the 1970's and prior. However, yes, Patti Labelle did receive 'technique' training in the early- 1980's when her voice was experiencing it's fundamental change; I read on a fan forum that around this time, she felt as if her voice had lost it's 'brightness & suppleness' (which, presumably, must have been the Lyrical attributes) and was becoming increasingly darker & heavier as well as louder - that's when she was informed of the fact that she was becoming a Dramatic- oriented voice and she sought to utilize it properly.

Notwithstanding, this is when she learned how to 'mix' properly hence why she was/is able to hold notes as high as B5 - D6 for extended periods of time and because her voice is, naturally, large, it carries much more resonance thus has withholding much more stamina/endurance for high notes than a smaller voice would.

By the way, if Whitney Houston [unfortunately] had not turned to Drugs & utilized a much healthier technique (such as learning how to 'mix') she, too, may have become a Dramatic Soprano.Devonte'noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341723937148634092.post-74989741389433819152014-05-19T23:01:52.794+01:002014-05-19T23:01:52.794+01:00Two questions: Don't Dramatic Sopranos have a ...Two questions: Don't Dramatic Sopranos have a lower tessitura than other types? Patti seems to have an incredibly high one that enables her to hold very high notes for extended periods of time. But this may have to do with question two.

Second: Did she have training somewhere in the late 70s. Prior to his, she still has the big head voice, but the voice does not as easily ascend to the upper 5th octave.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plt-pTqnRoQ

She's much smaller and yougner here (23); it could be that her voice had to settle. I've heard that dramatic/thicker voices take longer to peak. Or she could have been less bodacious because she had to sing in a group.theitfactornoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341723937148634092.post-30052645062067665572014-05-16T07:48:37.108+01:002014-05-16T07:48:37.108+01:00The thing about Ms. Patti's dissent is firstly...The thing about Ms. Patti's dissent is firstly--she is a dramatic of dramatic sopranos. Secondly, she really feels the need to let us know that quite often.

When you consider the fact that she's mixing and the sound is about 10-15 times as powerful as the effort she puts into it, it's truly a feat. But then she sometimes goes for the "soul" route.

Lots of old Soul musicians used an impaired technique, most often due so smoking, or a past full of hard drugs. You can hear them sometimes lose placement entirely and fall flat or shap.

Patti mimics this, but she does it with control. While her voice is far too powerful to ever really be "soft" (even her light mix belts drowned out Cydni's full voice), it can be adopted to sing nice "lyric" phrases. "Love. need, and want you baby" "If only you knew." A voice more albe to accomodate both--but with less power at the top would be Whitney Houston.

And belts in the 6th octave sound more like noise to me; they have almost no color to them for pretty much whoever is singing them. As useless as whistle in the upper 7th and 8th octaves.theitfactornoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341723937148634092.post-67875366817638210132014-04-25T06:11:31.166+01:002014-04-25T06:11:31.166+01:00Someone should really make a review of the perform...Someone should really make a review of the performance she did at the White House with Ariana Grande, Jill Scott, Janelle MonĂ¡e and Melissa Etheridge.
