[Spam Post] Live Performances From Black Girls Rock, The EMAs and The X-Factor

There has been a whole host of live events that I haven't managed to cover on the blog- most notably Black Girls Rock and the European Music Awards. I did consider just letting the events float by, undocumented, but decided you guys deserve more! So here goes!

[Watch] Katy Perry Performs "Roar" @ X-Factor (UK) And Continues To Bore

I can't seem to click with Katy Perry and her live performances. Sure, I like a lot of her singles- present one not included- but her live showings always leave me feeling cold and disinterested. Never more so was this the case than watching her showing at the X-Factor (UK), where she performed aforementioned single Roar.

I mean, she was dressed up as a tiger (and you guys know how much I love cats) and even that didn't hold my interest. (Poor) joke aside, the performance itself was okay- though the vocal was shaky-but the real problem I had, and usually have, was the absence of any stage presence from Katy herself.

She seems like a lovely lady, and makes catchy music, but it just never seems to translate when she puts her product on show. Maybe you guys can link me some videos in the comments that might allow me to see the light of Perry.

Whatever the case, I'm sure I'll be picking up a copy of Prism- which is getting strong reviews-at some point! Hopefully it'll be darker in sound, like she promised pre-release, and less like the lead single lifted from it.

[Watch] Katy Perry Performs @ 2013 Itunes Festival

Katy Perry closed the iTunes Festival yesterday, performing a selection of her hit singles for the packed audience at the Roundhouse in Camden. The Diva, who seemed to have adopted a rockier edge, also performed a few cuts from forthcoming album Prism- including latest single Roar.

Vocally, Katy was pretty much on point. Her voice was close to those laid down in studio for much of the set, but I had a personal problem enjoying the wobbly, weak tone in the midrange (which was most notable in first song, Walking On Air). The voice was definitely more impressive when Katy warmed up and left the midrange, with the belts and head notes sounding surprisingly good. Fireworks, however, still sounds a note or two too high for her live range.

I'm no expert on Katy Perry's live voice (is there such a thing?), so I'm not sure if this would be classified as a good showing for the Diva. Perhaps some of Katycats can inform me either way in the comments. I thought it was serviceable enough. After all, Katy isn't known for being a vocalist. I'm just surprised that at this point in her career, the stage presence isn't quite there.

Random thought: What was with the dark and dirty Dark Horse!?  Absolutely Loving that! (Just took a listen to the studio version, for some reason wasn't feeling that...weird).

Enjoy!

[Music Video] Katy Perry "Roar"

I thought Katy Perry's lyric video for Roar- you know, the one that featured the words as if being written on an instant messaging app- was clever enough to serve as a standalone promo for the single. It certainly didn't harm its sales, being number one, like, everywhere. However, Katy obviously isn't as lazy as me and has just released the REAL video for the song on YouTube.

Though still lukewarm on Roar as a single, I do like the new video- which sees the singer playing Queen of the jungle. Not only are the visuals bound to increase sales of the song, they should also nicely ramp up interest and anticipation for fourth album, Prism.

This looks like it's shaping up to be another big era for the singer-songwriter.

(Side note, does anyone else think Katy's been hitting the fake tan a little hard? She seems to be the wrong side of orange. Maybe it's just my monitor.)

[Listen] Katy Perry's "Roar" Leaks! But Is It Any Good?

Katy Perry's new song Roar has leaked two days before it was meant to premier! EEK! To anyone wanting to hear it, check out the lead single from upcoming album Prism at this link : Listen To Roar.  (sorry about sending you elsewhere to hear it, but it's a Tumblr site, so you'll be safe)

[Random Spam] Lady Gaga, Mel C, Jessie J, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey and Selina Gomez.

So some of you may or may not know that I'm currently up in Oxford helping a brother move! As so, I haven't been able to update the blog- Booo! However,  I've managed to find a laptop in his boxes and piggyback off a stranger's WiFi to quickly cobble together a post. Watch me get hacked (!)

Having been away from the internet for the week, I'm currently behind on what's going on in the world of Divas and music. Thus, to kill two birds with one stone (a post and catching up) I thought it made sense to do a varied Spam post.

Enjoy.

[Review] Diva's Halloween Costume Extravaganza

Yesterday was that special time of year where one could go out dressed like whatever the F***k one wanted, and not get committed or sectioned for their efforts. Yes people, yesterday was Halloween! How spooky!

Now if you're a misery guts like me (see the gifs below to get  a sense of where I'm coming from) you would have done zilch to mark the occasion. Well that's not strictly true, I sat in watching Adams Family and Polyester (Don't ask). I was planning on changing the banner of the site to somehow mark the day, but even that proved too much for my lazy behind.

But our Divas are a more exuberant and festive bunch than yours truly, and they didn't let us down; getting into the unholy spirit in the way only rich people with too much free time on their hands can. So let's check out what our lovely ladies were serving up on the catwalk of Halloween 2012!

Jessie J being Sued For Copyright Infringement!

Oh dear, looks like Jessie J is being sued for copyright infringement. The song in question is her second UK number one hit-and no favourite of mine- 2011's Domino.

The song sure did remind me a lot of Katy Perry's Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) when it was released, but as it was produced and written by the same people- notably Dr. Luke- it couldn't really be deemed plagiarism or infringment. More sloppy seconds, if you will.

Katy Perry Performs "Part Of Me" Live At American Idol

Katy Perry demonstrating the face I had on while watching this performance.

Katy Perry really followed through with the military theme of the promo for Part Of Me when she took it live to the stage at American Idol. Arriving from the rafters with her platoon, as if airlifted in, I had unjustifiably high hopes for this performance. But boy, was it pitchy! It wasn't even as if the dancing made up for it, or excused it, because that was flat and lacking energy.

Review: Katy Perry Performs "Part Of Me" Live At 2012 Echo Awards

 katy perry 2012 echo

At the 2012 Echo Awards Katy Perry gave yet another pitchy performance of new single Part Of Me. One could argue Perry makes up for the vocal deficiency with her peppy and energetic stage presence, but I don't understand how someone who has just finished an extensive tour- where she sang live- could still sound like such an amateur.

Taken from the re-release of 2010's Teenage Dream, which now carries the suffix "The Complete Confection", people could argue the star is just having teething trouble with the new material. But Perry has already sung it live a few times- Sports Relief and the Grammys- and it doesn't seem to be getting any better, so surely it can't be that.

News Round Up: Beyonce Has A Baby, Rihanna Keeps Selling, Sugababes Reform, Katy Perry Divorces and Christina Aguilera Talks Weight.

beyonce christina katy sugababes news

The biggest news of last week was of course the birth of Beyonce and Jay Z's first child- a daughter- named Blue Ivy Carter. It seems like only yesterday Beyonce spectacularly revealed her pregnancy to the world during her live performance of Love On Top at the 2011 MTV Music Awards.

The speed of the pregnancy seemed in stark contrast to senior Diva Mariah Carey, whose pregnancy felt like the gestation period of an elephant last year! Blue Ivy Carter was delivered healthy, via C-Section, at Lennox Hill Hosptial, New York- just in case you wanted to send flowers. Congratulations to the Knowles/Carter family.

Single review and Video: Katy Perry Ft Kanye west "E.T" #winning

katy perry Et kiss

I must admit I'm out of the loop when it comes to most things Katy Perry. I hadn't even heard of her new song E.T until it was in the entertainment news for not only ending Lady Gaga's 6 week Born this way reign, but also achieving the more impressive feat of being her fourth number one from her latest album Teenage Dreams. Still, it wasn't until the video was released, today, that I actually heard the song, which features Kanye West, and am pleasantly surprised that I quite like it.

Ke$ha "Tick Tock" vs Katy Perry "Calafornia Girls"

katy perry Kesha spank
Katy and Ke$ha Mash-up
If the photo on the left is anything to go on then super tramp Ke$ha's and kooky Katy Perry are firm friends in real life. So while we wait for the pair to duet in real life we have Dj Dizhe to thank for a virtual collaboration.

Listen below as Ke$ha's Tick Tock vocals are mixed with the audio, and chorus, of Katy Perry's California Girls in this summery Diva Mash-up!

[Vocal Profile] Katy Perry

Vocal Type: Light-Lyric Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octave ( D3-D6)
Whistle Register: No
Vocal Pluses: As a whole, the voice is characterful and youthful with a soft and sweet upper-range and a punchy, attitude infused chest voice. Katy Perry has the ability to hold notes [The One That Got Away (live)] and sing melisma [Whip My Hair (Live)], but her material doesn't often call for such vocal skills to be employed. As such, she is moat likely to attempt these feats in a live setting.

The Diva's lower range is cloudy and of mid-weight, but solidifies, brightens and lightens significantly as she ascends the third octave. Recent years have seen gains in the confidence exhibited in these lower notes, with them becoming fuller in sound.

The Diva shows the most resonance when belting in the fourth octave, loosing weight, colour and taking on an incisive quality as she moves towards and up the fifth octave. Occasionally she employs a slight rasp to these top notes- particularly when singing live- but its not usually heard in her recorded work, where the notes remain clean, clear and bright. Perry is also able to sing melisma in this part of her range [Walking on Air] but it's not something she demonstrates often.

Vocal Negatives: Criticisms have been leveled at her vocal ability when live and recorded vocals are contrasted.
