[Watch] Celine Dion's Performance of "Loved Me Back To Life" and Interview @ Jimmy Kimmel Live!

celine dion jimmy kimmel 2013 singing

Glad to see Celine Dion isn't resting on her laurels and leaving the success of new single Loved Me Back To Life to chance. The Diva is out promoting- wooo yeah!- and joined American Talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform the mid-tempo ballad and chat about various bits and bobs.

The performance itself wasn't as pristine a one as I've come to expect from Celine- note the slight awkward transition to headvoice at 3.04 for example. But I'm just splitting hairs, in reality it was a great rendition that illustrated to people who accuse her of being a serial-lipper that the voice is still present and accounted for. The only thing really lacking was the manic energy she usually comes with- which I felt particularly absent in the belts. Perhaps she was just tired.

Check out the performance of Loved Me Back To Life and her interview with the host (which shows just how down to Earth this megastar still is) below!

[New Music] Celine Dion "Loved Me Back To Life"

We watched Celine Dion debut her comeback single Love Me Back To Life live in July [here], but this week finally sees the Sia-penned cut hit the internet in its mastered form, ready for release! Music charts world over, you have been warned!

On first witnessing the live rendition I did have slight concerns that the contemporary sound of the song might put off some of Dion's older fans. But hearing the album version I'm not so worried about that anymore; thanks to the prominent electric guitar interlude in the song's middle (I had totally missed it in the live version). It's a clever inclusion that successfully nods to Celine's adult contemporary roots and love of a power ballad. Hopefully it should be enough to reassure (those) fans that this Canadian Diva doesn't intend to leave them behind as she modernises her sound and takes aim at a new generation of listener.

Loved Me Back To Life is released September 3rd..

[Listen] Sia's Demo of Celine Dion's "Love Me Back To Life" Hits The Net

We're still waiting on the radio/album version for Celine Dion's new single, Loved Me Back To Life, after hearing the Diva début the song live at a concert. However, while we wait, we can now enjoy Sia Furler's demo of it, courtesy of a leak somewhere in the musical pipeline.

Knowing it had been co-written by the Australian, I did wonder how Sia would have tackled the vocal of the song had it been her own. But like with Diamonds, my imagination was spared the pain of having to work when the real thing materialised on YouTube.[See her singing Diamonds here]

[Watch] Celine Dion Performs New Music, "Loved Me Back to Life" Live

Celine Dion new music 2013

Celine Dion, the Diva who has been ruling Vegas since 2003, is finally back with new music for us ignoramuses who don't parlez Francais (the Diva released French album Sans attendre last year for those who do). Premièred at a concert that I have no more information about, the singer gave the lucky audience a live rendition of the title track from the October-due English-language album, Loved Me Back To Life.

It's not the best recording- no shade to the YouTuber- but from what I can hear, it sounds like Celine has managed to contemporise her music without sounding like she's blatantly playing to a different demographic. A tough ask for writer Sia and producers Sham and Motesar, but they seem to have pulled it off with Loved Me Back To Life. Her voice also sounds amazing, but I haven't watched it close enough to discern whether it's lipped or not...perhaps one of you can help me with that (Read: I'm not poking any hornet's nest today).

[Review] American Idol Does Divas (Plus Theme: "Year They Were Born")

al 5 american idol 2013

Season 12 of American Idol has officially become a sausage free zone, with the remaining five contestants all being of the female persuasion - it's almost enough to make me watch! This being the case, or not (I don't know how far in advance they pick these themes), yesterday's episode was Divas night! In honour of that, each singer was asked to pick a song by a famous female to perform in front of the judges. But how many were heroic enough to pick a Mariah Carey or Nicki Minaj song? Find out below- along with my two pennies on each performance!

(I've also posted each of their second performances of the night, which were supposedly chosen from their year of birth. Might help those of us who don't watch the show get a better grasp on the contestants.)

The Grammy organised tribute to Whitney Houston aired on US channel CBS, and thanks to the magic of Youtube the performances have hit the internet. The tribute I was most excited about hearing was that made by fellow member of the vocal trinity: Celine Dion.

Duelling Divas: "O Holy Night". Which Diva Sang It Best

What better way to celebrate this festive and cosy time of year then by pitting Diva against Diva in a deadly O Holy Night Sing off! Okay, so this isn't a new thing, having done the same thing last year with Silent Night, and it isn't that deadly really, but its still fun for me to do! Besides this year's post features the added bonuses of my comments about the versions, as well as- more importantly- the chance for you to express your opinion via the poll at the bottom!

Some fun facts about the Christmas carol, courtesy of Wikipedia of course, before we begin. O Holy Night was written by French Poet Placide Cappeau and was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847! The words to the carol have been changed somewhat since then, and for anyone wanting to sing along as they listen, they are as follows;

Duelling Divas: "Over the Rainbow" Which Diva sang it best?

It's hard to believe that Over the Rainbow, the song that came to be the signature tune for the classic musical that was the Wizard of Oz, was almost omitted from the film after the chief executive at MGM and the film producer felt that it "slowed down the picture". Luckily the song was reinstated and went on to win the hearts of audiences from the moment it was released, eventually being voted the song of the 20th Century.

Judy Garland, at the age of 16, was the original vocalist of Over the Rainbow. Her sweet, rounded, thick contralto voice, with its perfect phrasing and strict adherence to the melody gave the world a master class in effective singing, belying her youthful years. Until this day her rendition has never been matched for its purity or ability to communicate the innocent, almost naive, sentiments of desire and hope the lyrics speak on.

[Duelling Divas] Mariah Carey Vs Celine Dion - "Open Arms"

At a recent show in Las Vegas, Canadian vocalist Celine Dion gave a classy, subdued and restrained performance of Journey's classic rock anthem Open Arms. Mariah Carey, who had worked with both the band's bassist and drummer before that point in her career, also covered the song in her own inimitable style on her 1995 album, Daydream.

Celine Dion and her Twin Baby boys grace the cover of Hello Magasine

Celine Dion and her Twin boys on the cover of Hello

Congratulations to Celine Dion who has revealed the two new additions to her family on the cover of the Canadian version of Hello magazine. The non identical twin boys named Nelson- after Nelson Madella- and Eddy-after her lyricist Eddy Marnay- are extra precious to Celine due to the difficulty she experienced conceiving and carrying them:

'We tried five times before I got pregnant. On the sixth try, it worked out. We were blessed twice.

'It's extraordinary to be parents again. Nelson and Eddy are doing well. They're six weeks old.'

She also told how she was originally pregnant with three babies, but lost one during the pregnancy.

'One little baby decided to step back to help the other two survive. The doctors said to me if there's something wrong, natures takes it's course.

'I still think of the one who stepped back. I'm sure every woman has the feeling about the little one that's not there.'

Congratulations again to the singer and her family!

[Vocal Range] Celine Dion

Vocal Type: Lyric Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves 1 note and a semitone B2- C#6 (approx)
Longest Note: 13 seconds - 'The Reason'
Vocal Pluses: Celine Dion is a technical singer who has great understanding of vocal placement, support, and projection. With this knowledge comes the ability to sing complex vocal runs with speed and accuracy. It is also responsible for her ability to hold a note, perfectly on pitch, without any wavering, better than most- see All by Myself .

Celine Dion's lower range is dark and slightly raspy but, for the most part, well supported and accessed via healthy technique. Her midrange can be warm, and slightly airy with an easy, lyrical quality- see Falling into You- or can be soft and sweet, though more substantial in its weight- Because You Loved Me. It leads effortlessly into her strong, clear belting range. This part of the range is noticeably contrasting to the lower half, being cooler in colour, thinner in texture and sharper in timbre. Celine Dion is astonishingly able to reach up into the sixth octave in this part of her range, so brilliant is her ability in mixing her belting voice with her head voice.

Celine Dion's head voice alone, is full and weighty, with an operatic tinge and control-see video below- though it is not often used by the singer.

Vocal Negatives: The nasal quality of Celine Dion's belting voice, as well as it's piercing quality can become overwhelming at higher frequencies. Also her lower range is weak and breathy.
