[Rant] Miley Cyrus - Malibu

Post by: Montrez Rambo

Damn Miley! Going back from (C)unt to Country I see? Not exactly... We'll get to that in a minute... How is Malibu? Great! Sultry vocals, an indie/alternative flare and very, very good lyrics? The song just made me feel good... But, in my Big Freedia voice, "What happened... In that Billboard interview?"

[NEW MUSIC] Niia - Sideline (Feat. Jazmine Sullivan)

Where to begin? Um, I just must say wow. I am impressed. Niia picked a hell of a way to make a debut and the right artist to feature.

[NEW MUSIC] Ezi Emela - Chineke Meh

Post by: Montrez Rambo

So, a few months ago I stumbled across this Ezi Emela, chick. Everything about her had me captivated... She was dark and gorgeous, with features atypical of the western beauty standards, but were to die for among West Africans/ African Americans/ West Indian people. Not only that but she had a very interesting sound and image.

[NEW MUSIC] Lorde - Green Light

Post by: Montrez Rambo

So, Lorde is back with a new song called Green Light.

It's a nice little pop song, if a bit generic. The music video is definitely Lorde-esque with quirky rave/T-Rex arm dancing and Donald Trump style mouthing of words... The vocals were relatively decent, though she still decides to battles with her lower register and middle instead of working with it. You know, if you don't have a low voice, it's okay to not sing low. No hard feelings, of course.

DUA LIPA, Underdeveloped Soprano or Mezzo in need of nuturing?

Post by: Montrez Rambo

Dua Lipa! She's so gorgeous. What's even more gorgeous than she is? Her voice. She has a steely, mesmerizing sound that is husky and deep. Is she a mezzo-soprano or a textbook underdeveloped soprano? Let's watch the above cover of The Hills, filmed for Radio 1's Live Lounge and see if we can get to the bottom of this vocal conundrum.

Right off the rip. The girl was giving us lower register; tight and congested, but low nonetheless. Hovering around G#3, dipping to a solid Eb3. It wasn't the most relaxed but her larynx wasn't being floored either.

JESSICA REEDY Low Mezzo-soprano or Contralto?

Jessica Reedy

Post by: Montrez Rambo

Jessica Reedy may not be a singer many of you have heard of, but in the gospel community she is well regarded, mainly because of her extensive lower register. Is she a rare contralto or one of many low mezzo-sopranos commonly mistaken for contraltos in popular music? Let's take a look at this performance to get a better understanding:
