[Vocal Range] Jessie J
Vocal Type: Lyric Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 octaves and 5 notes C3- A6
Whistle Register: Yes
Vocal Pluses: Jessie J has the ability to sing quick and complex melisma through the range without issue, a feat often noted as being a signature of her style. Along with this ability, she has the control to sing trills, staccatissimo through complex melodies with pinpoint accuracy [Stay With Me], and add texture to vocal lines via grunts and growls.
Her control, in regards to vocal dexterity, is mirrored in her breath control. As a result she can hold notes for lengths of time without loss of quality to the sound [I Will Always Love You (Live)], and sing complex and lengthy vocal lines in a single breath [Domino (live)].
The mid-range leads without issue from the dark lower range and up into the belt. Being versatile, Jessie is able to play with the dynamics, timbre and natural character of the voice to suit whatever she is singing. For instance she can sing with a soft and airy sound; a fuller, cleaner one, with a medium volume; be feminine and warm; or sing with an icy timbre that is infused with aggressive attitude. She relies on her musicality to determine which style is most suitable, and it is this understanding that allows her to sing across multiple genres [blues/ dance/ rap].
The belting range is elastic and energetic, being able to reach high into the fifth octave, with the aid of a head-dominate mix. The lower half of the belting range (below a C5) has more resonance and a fuller sound [Domino] than the extremes, which take on a metallic undertone. Still, Jessie manages to keep a degree of resonance and character even at the top due to her (questionable) technique [Bang Bang] which has her often singing from the throat. This placement is also why there can be an edge present to these notes [Mamma Knows Best (Live)].
The head voice is controlled, of medium weight, warm and measured. She is able to use it within octave-spanning runs [Nobody's Perfect (Live)] and with or without her signature quick vibrato [Flashlight (Live)] .FLashlight
Vocal Negatives: Her technique sounds improper when reaching above an E5, and as a consequence her voice becomes shrill and unstable. The lowest notes are also breathy and hit with a low larynx.

I think, her unique vibrato and complicated vocal runs are her pluses in her voice~ I love Jessie J <3
ReplyDeletei like her song "who you are" but it sounds like it hurts when she tries to hit higher notes
ReplyDeleteadele is still better than her
LOL okay rihanna has a wider range than Jessie J
ReplyDeleteOKAY.
thanks for the accuracy
I'll add the unique vibrato, thats very true!
ReplyDeleteRihanna's voice has probably been edited with software- thought there is no proof of this- but a bigger range doesn't make a better singer, and Jessie proves this.
ReplyDeleteI think the only similarities between Adele and Jessie is that they are both young British singers. Other than that I think their voices are totally different.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, they are both great, but both really different!
Deletetrue
ReplyDeleteso many people think that if you have a wide vocal range u are automatically a better singer -
but idk if its just me but even though i think she has a great voice she sounds uncomfortable when hitting higher notes - diva devotee do you think that its just her natural tone or is it improper technique
She definitely has a wider vocal range. Listen from 4:28: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4gkUDHR7VU
ReplyDeleteyep I think thats an A5 going ending on a B5 but I need to check it out properly. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI need to back-up the A5-B5 statement below. She performed on UK X Factor last night and definitely hit something higher than a G#5.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od2shOj-sdc
SKIP TO 2:39.
Def an A5 there. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHey, doesn't she go lower than a D3? Quite regularly. Look at her album version of Do It Like a Dude Live, and right at the end, she definitely goes lower. Also, I think she goes lower here:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4gkUDHR7VU&ob=av2e
Skip to 5:27, and it's at the end of the vocal run.
This needs to be updated haha! Her lowest note is lower than a D3 and her highest note is definitely higher than a G5.
Thanks :)
i love her voice
ReplyDeletejessie can sing more than 2 octaves...
ReplyDeleteJESSIE J SANG IN WHISTLE ON THE VOICE LAST NIGHT!! WHILE IMPERSONATING A VIOLIN! I'll try and find a link! I'm so excited haha! I knew her range was more than we've seen!!
ReplyDeleteWhat! You have to find us a link! Please, never seen her actually use her whistle :O
DeleteI watched most of "The Voice" yesterday. Typical I'd miss that part!
ReplyDeleteAh! You have to find it! It's proper good!
ReplyDeleteIt's between 13:34 and 13:37 if you watch the show from start to finish. It's in the comments after Jay Norton sings. I'll try and find the exact link :) its only a snippet, and she's not warmed up, but it's a thousand miles from a squeal/screech! Definitely sang.
ReplyDeleteHere we go, found it. This is Jessie J singing in the whistle register. She is messing around, not warmed up, pretending to be a violin, but the fact she hits it without it sounding like a squeal/screech and that she's finding it effortlessly means it's definitely within her vocal range. I knew someone with that kind of insane control and technique would be able to go up way higher than she's shown previously - she doesn't usually sing in her lighter register ("head voice'') purely because it doesn't really suit her vocal style.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2eH5nYuktM
Watch between 3:53 and 3:58
She also, in her live version of Whitney's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", hits somewhere in the sixth octave, during the key changed chorus when she sings "I wanna feel the heat".
But anyway, the video I linked, that note should definitely be included in her vocal range :) Yay jessie x
I posted a link but it said my comment has to be approved?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2eH5nYuktM Its here. Jessie is mimicking a violin being strung and its definitely free relaxed and sung. Im impressed.
ReplyDeleteYeah at 3:53 to 3:58 :)
ReplyDelete*nudge* :D
ReplyDeleteJessie J also hits a whistle note in this
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TW5HqMWzFc at 1:45. And yes she did hit one during the voice when she was imitating a violin.
I'm so anxiously awaiting her updated vocal range haha. I feel like I'm checking twice an hour for it!
ReplyDeleteit sounded kind of weird and forced to me and isnt the whistle register supposed to come with ease - i mean mariah hits whistle notes more easily than high belted chest notes
ReplyDeletenevertheless i love the soulfulness of her voice
wait what note is that then
ReplyDeleteIts an F6, but I'm not sure if that was sung as a whistle note. It sounds full, loud and has a weight to it, also the placing sounded lower than that of a whistle note- though of course that is speculative. Sounded more like a really high head note. Anyone else care to weigh in before I amend?
ReplyDelete[I know I've posted this response twice, but I just realised that more than one person was asking]

I think it sounds the same as Kelly Clarkson's original whistle - the F#6? I don't think it's super high head voice - most females voices go into whistle territory at around E6, and as Jessie is only a mezzo, she'd have to be really pushing her head voice to hit an f6 in it.
ReplyDeleteWhat's her new range? 3 octaves 3 notes?
Technically singing in general is supposed to sound effortless. However a good trained singer can sing effortlessly but give their singing a good edge to it. Like Mariah. People say she is too technical of a singer. I agree she is very technical but has found a way to make her belts sound a tad bit more "Raw" and bright to give the appearance of emotion. The note sounded a bit weighty but I'm almost positive it was a whistle note.
ReplyDeleteWell I think that Mariah Carey has proven that Whistle register (although cannot carry as far as belting or Projected singing) can be sung with resonance. Some of Mariah's Whistles sound Bright and sharp, but also very full. And she is one of the number one examples of being able to alter the tonal and projected quality of a whistle note (from small and breathy to big and screechy). Also Minnie was known for her sharp loud whistles as well.
ReplyDeleteYeah :) my vocal teacher is Adam Lopez (holds Guinness world record for highest note sung by a human - overtook georgia brown or whatever her name was because she had no proof) and he said its definitely whistle. Not to name drop or anything :p
ReplyDeletewell thats confirmation enough for me! Lol
ReplyDeleteOMG...her VOCAL really POWERFULL...I can'T Do IT...
ReplyDeleteAnyone think she has as potential to be as technically capable as Mariah Carey? And how do you think she compares to Christina Aguilera?
ReplyDeleteCan I just say - Jessie hit some insane low notes in her performance of Mockingbird with Tom Jones on Radio 2. YouTube it. Definitely worth a listen, and I think it might add a note or two to her vocal range on here :)
ReplyDeleteLove your work DD, her revamped profile is so much more belying of her true abilities! Xx
Hey DD! Jessie hit some insane low notes in her recent performance of Mockingbird with Tom Jones on Radio 2. Just YouTube it, you'll see it straight away. There's a few low notes in there that seem to have amazing control, and I think will add a few notes to Jessie's vocal range on here. Even if it doesn't, well worth the watch - her belts come so damn easy!!!!
ReplyDeleteLoving the work DD, her profile revamp shows so much more about how talented a vocalist she really is.
Thanks :) xx

ReplyDeleteThe link :) x
I think, and I know I won't have much support in this, that Jessie is just as technically capable as Mariah. She's been singing her whole life, and is trained classically, in music theatre, as well as contemporary vocals. She has complete control over her larynx when she chooses to have that balanced sound approach - her mixed belt voice is unbelievably easy to access and stretches high into the fifth octave. She is just a soul/r'n'b singer who wants her belts to sound like they've got a bit more oomph and power behind them, so she changes the placement a little, with more edge, and uses a little bit of voluntary tension to make the belts sound more impassioned. She knows how to hit the low notes, she can sing in whistle register, and she could be a technical purveyor like Mariah is (or used to be...) but it doesn't suit her artistic style. Also, I may just add that Jessie has NEVER lipsynched and will never; like Pink, she said she'd rather sound pitchy in the occasional performance than ever lower herself to lipsynch. Mariah and Christina have both lipped so many performances. I don't have anything against them, I love them to bits, but just saying.
ReplyDeleteThanks! :D I just checked it out, and I think the lowest note is a very dark sounding A3!
ReplyDeleteReally?! I couldve sworn the first "yeah hey hey hey" was much lower than that?! An A2 or something!
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think, DD?
ReplyDeleteIn other news, bit of a personal brag, my vocal range now goes from an A1 to an F#6 - not too shabby for an 18 year old boy heh! Xx
ReplyDeleteI agree with most of that, but Jessie is new to the game and we have no idea what time will do to her voice. Its easy to say one thing when you're on vocal fire and another when your voice isn't what it used to be .I remember mariah saying in an interview she'd never lip-synch (wish I'd saved that, think it was during the rainbow era). Now look at her.
ReplyDeletei think she can become as technically capable. yes
ReplyDeletebut i dont think she will ever sound as good
idk if its just me but i dont like her belting - they sound so forced, if that makes sense
in mariah's prime singing was just effortless everything about her voice was absolutely perfect - i cant say the same for jessie j
as for xtina - they both have their strengths
but i would put them at about the same level because neither are perfect vocalists but that f6 jessie hit is pretty amazing got to admit
however no one will ever beat mariah's whistle notes
i also dont think she could ever compare to mariah's vocal range or her brilliant dynamics
but it all comes down to personal preference
New note I think :) it's at 2:23 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0NnEDsPErM
ReplyDeleteIt's super high.. It sounds a little squeal-esuq, but it's not, because it's accessed through a big vocal slide up, albeit a rapid one, and hence achieved through dexterous vocal adduction. Definitely sung :)
She keeps pulling out new notes haha.
New note! It's at 2:23 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0NnEDsPErM
ReplyDeleteSounds a little squeal-esque but it's reached through a vocal slide, not forcing super amounts of air through the vocal chords but rather through rapid and dexterous vocal adduction, definitely sung.
She keeps adding notes!
Sorry if this posts twice. iPad being a dick haha.
New note!!!! It's at 2:23 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0NnEDsPErM
ReplyDeleteSuper high. Sounds a little squeal-esque but it's not - reached through dexterous and rapid vocal adduction, apparent because it's accessed via vocal slide.
She keeps pulling out new notes!
Third time lucky trying to post this..
I cant help feeling when i listen to her live that she can barely control her voice.... but she is an amazing singer !
ReplyDeleteJust waiting on DD to confirm/discuss on this. I think it's finally gone through as a normal post haha. Xx
ReplyDeleteLol I am not sure what that note is, but it sounds around G6-B6 possibly?? Thats just off the top of my head...
ReplyDeleteEb7.
ReplyDeleteWow I really amgoing tone deaf! Either that my speakers are on a new level of shit lol but I think you are right!
ReplyDeleteWhat does lip synching had to do with comparing them vocally . xtina lip synching two songs in her career (Impossible and get mine get yours ) and one of those performances she was really sick and just gotten off a long tour as for mariah she has lip synch yea but she is known to be a vocal prodigy for generations as well as xtina, every singer has their bad day and has hit bad notes even jessie j i have heard she sing and some times she tries way too much and crack .No one is trying to bring any singer down by using the bad but the good with want they can do in their comfort range as well as the individual strengths of their voices .
ReplyDeleteTo be honest i don't think Jessica is on Christina 's level much less mariah . i don't think even in time she will . yes she had a beautiful voice but but to many people see her as the way they see mariah or christina . she does really stand out taht way to me she is good but not the best i don't think she is trying to be .
*cheekily waits for DD's opinion* ;p
ReplyDeleteDude, you're probably gonna have to go to the chatbox with your question or he probably won't see it.
ReplyDeleteWeb! I can't :( I've been overseas traveling for 3 months, still got a few left and my iPad just doesn't let me view or use the chatbox :(
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'll put it on the chatbox for you so DD has a better chance at seeing it.
ReplyDeleteChristina has lipped way more than just 2 songs.
ReplyDeleteIf you mean lipping whole songs it's still a bit more than that,
however she has lipped parts of songs all throughout her career.
Most of the Candyman E5's performances.
All of the Slow Down Baby G5's performances.
The F#5 in Show Me How You Burlesque performances.
Some C5's in Ain't No Other Man performances.
All the F#5's in every Ain't No Man performances.
An E5 in I Turn To You Live once.
Not slamming her for this (Although I detest lip syncing greatly) just saying it's more than 2 songs she has lipped.
*bumps post* hah. I'm so annoying but I love reading DD's opinion!
ReplyDelete*bumps post* hah. I'm so annoying but I love reading DD's opinion!
ReplyDeleteI think this puts her vocal range, is serendipity is correct, at 4 octaves and 1 notes ;) x
ReplyDeleteI think it is an F#6, however it sounds like a squeal to me.
ReplyDeletesounding like an F#6 to me stuey
ReplyDeleteSuch an amazing singer ,..
ReplyDeleteIt has nothing to do with which singer is on who's level. Mariah, Christina ad Jessie have impeccable vocal control for their individual voice types, so it shouldn't at all come back to comparing them.
ReplyDeleteSomebody who actually knows a thing or two about singing, vocal range, and technique would know right off the bat that Rihanna/Katy Perry/Ke$ha, and similar 'computerized' pop stars shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as technically trained vocalists like Mariah, Christina and Jessie J.
Is her voice fixed when on the radio? I heard she can't hit the high notes when she is performing live
ReplyDeleteWell, after seeing her Olympics closing ceremony performance...I am impressed with Jessie. And I am not easily impressed by pop singers. ;D
ReplyDeleteA shame her albums are of material not to my taste but, really excellent singer.
Ack! I missed it! Must have been a great performance. Especially if you were good with it Opie (not that Im implying anything tho) ;)
ReplyDeleteI am sure it will appear on youtube soon Brian ( there's one up already of her second appearance but it's somebody who filmed his tv. pretty poor quality)
ReplyDeleteShe came on twice. First with ( I presume) one of her own songs and something together with a Tiny Tempah and another hip hop or some such dude. And then later on in the show she did We Will Rock You with the surviving members of Queen.
ps I have had one listen of Mariah ( the album) so far and indeed songs are not half bad. ( That was you I had the conversation regarding Mariah Carey's writing wasn't it?)
im too pleased with this development ;)
ReplyDeletebut yeah, she was incredible
Don't get too excited. ;)
ReplyDeleteNot a fan yet. For me to become that she will have to get into another genre of music.
Yep! I though she was fantastic too although she could have done without embellishing her notes with high squeaks at points! I loved Annie though, she made the night for me and put all the younger diva's out of the picture! Also is it just me or did Emeli Sande sound pretty off?
ReplyDeleteI think you should change her vocal range because in the live acoustic version of her song called "Big White Room" she reached G#6.
ReplyDeleteHere's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAaos80oPqg
Jessie was much better way back in her 2009 days in my opinion. This is a link of her singing Mamma Knows Best on 2009 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzIVGJS1qQI&feature=relmfu . And listen to her growls in this video of her singing her song Finders Keepers. particularly the growl/shout at around 0.45 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YQtrgEHbQ4&feature=relmfu
ReplyDeleteErm, well...despite how old this comment is, I should like to get my two cents' worth in, if I may. From a purely technical aspect, Jessie J is already as capable as Mariah, because I rarely hear her misappropriate her voice or use it incorrectly. Frankly, the only reason Mariah gets so much credit is because of her range - there are massive slews of singers with technique that is JUST as good as hers - or even better (Mariah has a tendency to pull her larynx down for the lowest notes). The reason that she isn't as respected as Mariah is simply because 1. her career is barely in its infancy compared to Mariah, and 2. we don't know what the years will do to her voice.
ReplyDeleteComparing her to Christina - well, her technique is a thousand times better than Christina's, that much is for certain. A singer to whom Jessie J compares more favourably is perhaps Beyonce - both of them have a stunning technical grasp on their voices, and give their all in almost every performance. I would put Jessie J at a higher level than Christina, but mostly because I detest with all my being the sound of a strained voice.
Just posting it here as well as chat;
ReplyDeleteJessie J has a new song out! It's called Silver Lining (Crazy Bout You) and her vocals are so beautiful in it. It was written by Diane Warren and you can tell, haha, it's a bit 80s dance ballad-esque.
But her head voice is finally getting some much needed showcasing! It's so easy and comfortable for her, and the tone is so pretty.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM-9j-yfN9E
Call me crazy too but isn't that drum track straight from the 80's as well?
ReplyDeleteReal shame too because I would have loved it if not for that. As it is, I listened till the end because of the singing but won't listen again because of that drum track. Gives me a head ache.
But I thought I'd respond in the hopes it will propel your comment a bit higher. It deserves attention (Though I dare say, this sounds to me like the kind of single DD will be reviewing :) )
She has a certain old school soulful charm to her delivery here. I never have listened to her before today, but I can see why you like her. I have heard of her and some people swear by her. The mixed G5s and vocal runs were a nice way to bring a climax to the last minute of the song.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of the way that the song has been produced, but love Jessie's vocals on the track.
ReplyDeleteshe has a very unique style of singing, her dexterity in singing is amazing...
ReplyDeletethe biggest note in I Turn To You is F5 which Xtina always fails to hit. As such, most of her performances are like but she does fail to hit the note.
ReplyDeleteMariah is technically better in my opinion and her tone is much nicer compared to Jessie, who doesn't sound great half the time - like she's yelping those higher belts (what some people call "edgy"). She's technically better than Christina but Christina sounds better overall. Christina hasn't lipped THAT many performances - and if she has it's not because she's sick but either because the TV show she's on (TOTP e.g.) told her to or because she wanted to put emphasis on the stage production and dancing.
ReplyDeleteThere's no doubt she can sing, but for me her tone can be quite annoying when she sings out of her comfort range. All these high belts above E5 - a lot of people comment on this "edgy" sound she has given her voice - are not pleasant to listen to.
ReplyDeleteJessie J is just as effortless as mariah. Jessie just has a lot more passion. A lot of the things she does while singing are in the heat of the moment, bounced off of the adrenaline and her energy while performing. She is by far an amazing singer technically and I think a lot of people tend to miss when someone is putting personality behind their voice purposely vs someone straining to hit a note. Beyonce is effortless, but her show is boring because everything down to the T of her crying, winking, moving is scripted. Jessie J is full passion plus if she really wanted to she could sing a song flawlessly. But she'd rather be an artist than a robot. You can really see her love for the music, the riffs, the runs, the movements in the melodies and her connection with her fans when she performs. And I think that's what makes her such an AMAZING artist and performer. She has a reason behind her music. Her songs all have really prominent meanings that she wrote from HER experiences and her performs it like that too. Its just a big plus that she has an incredible voice to go along with it!
ReplyDeleteCan we get a review on her new single, Wild?! It's the lead single for her upcoming album :)
ReplyDeleteFor some reason the worldwide version doesn't have dizzee rascal on it, but anyway.
ReplyDeleteOh, and she's already released a one minute long acoustic version, haha. For you to have a squiz at, @divadevotee :p
ReplyDeleteJESSIE IS AMAZING ;D
ReplyDeleteI think Jessie is more of a spinto soprano than a mezzo.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if it's as low/lower than C#3 but Jessie went pretty low in her performance on the Voice UK last night - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt45KyumdI4 - at around 0:23-0:25. Pretty solid performance - both of the guys with her have huge voices.
ReplyDeleteAlso, at 4:54 here - she's quite young here haha, just found a low note that sounded well... low. Haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAaos80oPqg
ReplyDeleteher vocal range is past 3 octaves...
ReplyDeleteshe is a soprano, not mezzo -soprano
ReplyDeletewhat is the highest note sung by jessie j ?
ReplyDeletejessie j 's voice is a stronger like dramatic soprano
ReplyDeleteNot quite... spinto soprano.
ReplyDeleteA dramatic soprano is a type of operatic soprano with a powerful, rich, emotive voice that can sing over, or cut through, a full orchestra .... i know she is a lyric spinto soprano ..... but her voice is powerful and strong i just say that her voice like dramatic soprano's voice
ReplyDeletethis girl has very big potential with her monstre voice
ReplyDeletei love jesss
ReplyDeletei think she can reach 5 octaves
ReplyDeleteShe's not even a Spinto Soprano people. Really, she isn't. Her voice isn't all that big. She can't carry (or hasn't-yet) a large to the mid or upper register. And her timbre isn't all that dark to be honest. But yes, awesome voice. I don't like those shrill E's but her A5s are pretty darn decent. And those riffs? She's a monster!
ReplyDeleteyou are silly . Jessie has freely belted through to Bb5 & has hit many A5's.
ReplyDeleteHer headvoice is light, agile, that of a soprano
Her timbre is not dark, she has a metalic sound, much like Patti labelle.
Jessies technique has come leaps & bounds, and hardly uses falsetto in replacment for belts.
Jessie = Soprano
Frank McClean from Metacritic stated: "She's definitely a soprano, a qualification that is easy to figure out by listening to her hit songs Mamma Knows Best and Who You Are. She's one of the best new artists in music industry by far". p.s. if you don't believe read this
ReplyDeleteyoung dramatic soprano is widely known as a spinto. She is a youthful soprano whose voice hasn’t matured yet but is still very powerful and has great volume. Despite her young age, a spinto is capable of long lyric phrases and can be heard easily over a full orchestra.
ReplyDeleteHer vocal range extends from a C4 to a C6 and her difference with the other sopranos is that she has to sustain long and intense notes both in her middle and upper register.
Although the word spinto means “pushed” in Italian, it doesn’t describe the vocal challenges that a soprano spinto will have to overcome. The only pushing that she will have to endure is the pushing around of her heroines by villains and lovers alike. As a consequence of the hardships they have to go through, the heroines she embodies usually commit suicide at the end of the opera.
Spinto Soprano
Since she’s on her way to becoming a full dramatic soprano or a Wagnerian, a spinto soprano has to master long dialogues and recitative. Often she is trained in good diction in German and Italian and mastering the former can play a major role in her career.
The spinto or young dramatic soprano is one of the most interesting categories to belong to because of the breadth of roles you can be casted into. Having said that, it’s, also, among the most physically, vocally, and emotionally demanding and tiresome fachs.
One of the most celebrated spintos of all times is the magnificent Leontyne Price, one of the first African American opera singers to become a leading lady at the Metropolitan Opera.
jessie j just young dramatic soprano
ReplyDeleteUmm, I KNOW she's a Soprano. I never said she wasn't. I simply said she isn't a SPINTO Soprano, and she isn't. She has a Lyrical Voice. Her timbre isn't dark enough to be Mezzo. If I thought so I'd have said so, which I didn't (for those who can adequately read). So what exactly makes me silly?
ReplyDeletedivadevotee this needs update
ReplyDeleteyou are deaf? listen to his live she has veryyyyyyy big voice she is a spinto
ReplyDeletehis voice is very big to lyric soprano
ReplyDeleteShe has a Lyrical Voice - you don't know what is spinto? spinto is a young dramatic soprano , Despite her young age, a spinto is capable of long lyric phrases and can be heard easily over a full orchestra.
ReplyDeleteCopy and pasting, huh? And from Wikipedia??? lol
ReplyDeleteHer voice isn't big at all. Why has she yet to produce a huge sound in the middle register? Listen to Whitney's HUGE sound in BOTH the mid register AND the upper register. And she's able to carry that large, thick sound in Head Voice as well. Jessie's Head Voice is weak. Her mid register lacks the volume. She isn't able to generate large volume there. She's generated reasonably high sound from G#5 to A5, but that's it. The rest of the upper register lacks the power. And her timbre??? It's not even all that dark. Listen to those C Naturals. No where close. She doesn't have the size or timbre. I'm not deaf, at all. Tone it down with the subliminal insults, it's not cool. A big voice would be Florence Welch, Whitney, Celine, Pia Toscano, and Monica. Jesse doesn't come close. She's completely lyrical. She posses ONLY lyrical attributes, no dramatic attributes. Spintos have both Lyrical and Dramatic attributes. She's just a Lyric. That doesn't make her any less talented, though. She doesn't have to have a big Spinto voice to be awesome. She already is.
Get over it. She doesn't have a big voice, ever. I love Jesse. I listen to a lot of her Live performances. She doesn't have the creamy, dark-ish timbre. She doesn't produce an ambiently huge sound in ANY register. Here, how about you send me some performances of her exhibiting a LARGE, HUGE, VOLUMINOUS sound in the mid register? Sounds fair? Give me some links. Gonna tell you now, it's a set up 'cause you won't find any. But heck, go ahead anyway =D
ReplyDeleteE/F is definitely a passagio for her. She is definitely a soprano of some kind, but she does have quite a voluminous voice. Watching her perform with Daley and James Morrison, you will see that they can't be heard over her. To me, she sounds like a warm lower set fuller lyric soprano with with above average peak volume. Singing live, she definitely outsings the majority of the people she sings with. She has a medium to large volume production, from what I've seen. (Plus Daley and James Morrison are light-lyrics tenors BTW). She is not like Whitney Houston who had a large to very large volume production.
ReplyDeleteHere is one when she sings over James Morrison. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve5foI8v0lY
ReplyDeleteHere is one when she sings over Dale.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VshX2ukQtWc
Both of her partners were light lyric tenors and she over song them. James Morrison's performance was quite sad to me....LOL
Jessie J is not as small as you claim, but not as big as many perceive her to be. She has a warm voice, and can be steely at times, but not quite a spinto.
Full Lyric seems plausible, but definately not a Spinto. She completely lacks the size and timbre. A medium voice is something I'd push for. I wouldn't say Medium to large at all. Her sound production in the middle register has never proven to match Celine's or Whitney's. Not even Mariah. I need to hear it. I don't think she's capable of producing such a herioc sound without pushing/forcing it.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I'd like to ask you when and WHERE did I say or "CLAIM" her voice was small? Never said that, just said it isn't big, which it isn't.
ReplyDeleteAlso, singing over someone doesn't mean you have a large voice. It means nothing really lol Also, she didn't sing over Dale AT ALL. She definately drowned Morrison's voice out but she didn't with Dale, at all. And they BOTH of those guys have small voices. And Jessie didn't exhibit any voluminous delivery there. Provide a link where she exhibits delivery of a voluminous passage in the mid register, please? Don't waste your time, 'cause you probably won't find it. She's got an awesome voice, that's all that counts. She doesn't have to have a huge voice.
Sorry, but I just chose I'll placed words.
ReplyDeleteHappens to me ALL of the time. One grammatical error and it can possibly open up a can of worms. Happens to me almost religiously on YouTube lol That's why when I comment on videos judging their range and stuff, I tend to be overly meticulous 'cause one TINY minute thing can veer the entire angle of what you're saying. Next thing you know people are all band wagging you and stuff. It ain't pretty haha.
ReplyDeleteBut yah, If I came off as obnoxious, sorry. But what I'm getting at is that her voice isn't as big as some people claim and it's not big enough to fit that of a Spinto, you know? It's a Medium sized voice to say the LEAST. But again, smaller doesn't mean less talented. Mariah's got a Medium sized voice and with the achievement of absolute resonance the girl is an absolute vocal beast. And I think Jessie's a beast herself!
You didn't come off as a jerk. Anyways, do you sing? I'm curious as to if you do and your voice type. Idk if I'm a true spinto tenor or not but I have very metallic chest notes and fairly grand volume. I have quite a strange voice and some stuff about my voice leads me to believe I'm a textbook spinto while other things lead me to believe I'm just a low, dark and very full lyric tenor. Plus, 3-4 years ago, I was a treble so my voice is steadily changing. There is a stark contrast between the color of my lower range and my upper chest. It used to be a stark weight difference but as of lately I can carry up nearly all the weight of my lower register to my upper chest without much issue. In fact I just learned I can phrase over Eb5 which I thought was my limit to phrasing. The last thing is that I have plenty of agility but even with proper mixing and balancing on top of plotting my melismas, my runs can be quite unwieldy. They sound overly processed at times.
ReplyDeleteI sing but I'm not sure what my voice classifies as. At one point I thought I did but now it's unclear. It's really a cross between Baritone and Tenor.
ReplyDeleteAnd metallic Chest Notes with grand volume? Sounds like you're a Dramatic Tenor to me 'cause Dramatic voice's tend to have metallic-like qualities to their voices along with being able to generate grand volume. And unwieldy, huh? Whereas there are tons of more characteristics to factor out, you seem to be within the Tenor fach. Where're your passagios & where';s your tessitura primarily? & Describe your lower register. Is it audible? How well do you project. Your lowest note. Infact, what's your entire Modal/Chest range (excluding Falsetto/Head Voice) from highest note to lowest.
My modal range in it's entirety (As of the past few weeks) has been A#1-A5, but comfortably D#2-F#5. My lower register is comfortable, resonant, dark, warm and I can project well over talking volume down to G#2 but my A#1 (I can go a little lower) is quite audible. My first passagio, where my falsetto breaks is around B3/C4. I have another passagio around A4 (It gives me hella trouble) and my final passagio is E5. Anything above E5 sounds more heady with plenty of bight.
ReplyDeleteYou're definately a Tenor haha. It's be easier to tell if I could hear you, but I don't know many Lyric tenors that could dare reach C3 (projecting well) let alone go below an A2 in addition to having metallic-like qualities. That's intrinsically Dramatic. Spintos tend to develop into Dramatic so from my knowledge of the fach going along with what you said, I'd say Spinto/Dramatic.
ReplyDeleteI have a fairly bad recording of me singing a few days ago but its not quite finished. It only went up to about D5/D#5 in chest. I'll post it and a song of mine. The song If I remember right has a tessitura of A#2(audio layering)-A5 but I forget. Anyways it better shows my belting than the other clip.

Like in all seriousness, the one lacking instrumentation was from boredom so I was only fidling with my range. I was going to see exactly how high I could phrase in the 5th octave but ran out of time. LOL
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hyxg7c1ugZw his voice so beautiful and perfect here
ReplyDeletejessie 's voice has Lyric-Spinto Soprano's weight and colour , jessie is a spinto.
ReplyDeleteIf I didn't know any better, I'd say you were Montrez....certainly sound like him 0_o
ReplyDeletecorrection - vocal type : lyric spinto soprano
ReplyDeleteI am Montrez...LOL Who are you LMAO!?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteMe? Why? lol.
ReplyDeleteLol I mean you recognized me and I have no earthly idea on who you are.... Meh, I'll stay confused...ROFL.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm Sasuke Uchiha, obviously. But you can call me Sasuke lol Small world running into Rambo, though. Honestly, it is. I'm honoured.
ReplyDeletei am sorry but you tell me that she was spinto soprano not dramatic
ReplyDeleteWhat out of what I said made you think I implied that she is dramatic? I said she is a full lyric not spinto or dramatic.....
ReplyDeleteLol, I'm still perplexed and a bit tickled that someone thumbed me down. I mean how do you know of me? Lmao....
ReplyDeleteif you never said that she was dramatic or spinto What does it mean?
ReplyDeleteI thumbed those comments down for their deliberate obtuseness. I find it annoying. Why can't this person state who he/she is, when he/she obviously knows who you are? If not in open, then by getting in touch with you?
ReplyDeleteYeah. It is quite annoying even on my behalf, I must state. For one, I am not that popular on YouTube and I interact with everyone one a quite personal level, who gives me channel feedback. I honestly like the interaction because it helps mold my craft. I would like for them to identify themselves' in private rather than here. But yeah, it got old quite fast.
ReplyDeletei said that her voice was strong like a dramatic soprano's voice and you write that '' not quite ... spinto soprano''
ReplyDeleteReconsider your old comments
ReplyDeleteHas it ever occurred to you that my opinions on her voice may have changed because my knowledge may have expanded.
ReplyDeleteNo thanks :)
ReplyDeleteyeah you can change your opinion but it's wrong she is a spinto soprano
ReplyDeletebye
Alright, see you later. :)
ReplyDeleteThat was weird as HELL lol.
ReplyDeleteReally? Last time I checked, her timbre isn't ANYWHERE close to Whitney's, it isn't close to Jennifer Hudson's, it's not even darker than Nicole Scherzinger's, who's a Lyric Soprano herself. And all of those ladies by the way have HUGE voices. They carry tons of weight in both the middle & upper. Jessie has ZERO dramatic qualities to her voice. Say she's a Spinto, fine. That's what YOU think. But I'm telling you now, she doesn't have the colour/weight for that fach. She lacks that & the size.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I like doing that. I've gotten a bit sassier lately.
ReplyDelete........this guy -__-
ReplyDeleteI see o_0
ReplyDeleteSo you too, at one point, thought Jessie was a Spinto?

ReplyDeleteI'm still on the fence because I know many voices come in many shapes, sizes, and colors so I think the safest bet is to call her a full lyric soprano. She has a warm and buttery lower region, quite typical of spintos and also has the ability belt modestly. But Jessie J really starts to confuse me above F5 when her tone takes a change from warm and slightly metallic to a more nasal bight and very metallic. When she reaches squillo around G#5 you can see quite a tonal contrast in her belts.
ReplyDeleteBut being a spinto is not quite about the metallic delivery but about the metal in the squillo notes and she definitely has quite a bit of metal in her squillo notes. My issue with her which makes it hard for me yo ascertain is her mix. Though it is great, when she sings chesty her damn voice is so bright to begin with it is hard to separate. I mean she is one of the brightest voices I've ever heard.
I mean I have only sound warm when I belt below g#4 and anything above it I sound like a very bright dramatic mezzo. An old vocal coach told me that he is quite sure I'm spinto for multiple reasons but my voice has changed quite a bit since we last chatted. Its been close to 9 months. He said a characteristic of all spintos is a warm lower section, for men dark and eerie but for women rich and buttery. He said belting before the second chest passagio can be a big mixed bag but he said I do get deceptively bright considering how I sound lower in my chest. So I'm guessing extreme brightness is another trait. Lastly he referenced high volume which he was certain I had. But my voice retained its height but has darkened and lowered substantially since then, and has also had a timbre change for my belts. One can distinctively hear more metal.
when i listen her song big white room i thought that she was black
ReplyDeleteA spinto is a lyric voice basically, but with more chest resonance added to the head voice. Which causes the lyric voice to seem to have a bigger volume
ReplyDeleteShe seems like she was kinda restraining herself in most of the performance with James Morrison
ReplyDeletethey are not particulary hard to overshadow them, their voices are like super airy
ReplyDeleteI've realized that at this point.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebkCWkH0oGg please watch this beyonce vs jessie j
ReplyDeleteYou sound Lyric Bariton-ish to me.
ReplyDeleteI'll be able to tell if you sustain a Ab2 and C3.
And if you can, belt & sustain an A4 for at least 3 seconds.
And do both a Legato & Staccato scale starting at a 3rd Octave G Natural. I'll definitely be able to pin point your fach after that exercise 'cause those 2 alone aren't really helping me.
Well, I have decent stamina above A4 but A4 is my passagio and resonating there can be quite the challenge. But I have to make a new recording. In the mean time, I'll let you listen to my latest few recordings.
ReplyDeletehttps://soundcloud.com/black-robin/what-they-know
This is a recording of mine from yesterday. I scaled up to G5 in a HV dominated Falsetto mix in the beginning. But yesterday my lower register was completely shot from all that screaming (Don't ask LOL)...
https://soundcloud.com/black-robin/broken-high-passagio-e5-e3-b5
I was a bit ill here but I scaled to B5 but choked on my high passagio...LOL... Generally my falsetto is much much more connected. IDK why I had the bright idea to record it. But I'll make a recording to your speccifications ASAP.
OK, I recorded it, but I'll upload it tonight. Lol.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm asking anyway lol Why were you screaming? lol.
ReplyDeleteI will say I love the colour of your timbre. It's Interchangeably Baritone/Tenor-like. Similar to mine, almost.
Cool. I was up much higher than I should be. I generally don't go above F5 in falsetto. LOL
ReplyDeletewho think that his voice is amazing like christina aguilera?
ReplyDeleteHey DD - did you catch this, by chance? Jessie J's set today/yesterday on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl5D0FJX44s
ReplyDeleteShe sang Price Tag, Nobody's Perfect, Wild, Excuse My Rude, It's My Party and covered Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble".
It'd be cool to get a review :)

HAHA she raps at 11:13. Fantastic.
ReplyDeleteSorry haha, just posting as I listen to it. She's hit a few semi-low notes in this, I can't remember the exact times, but there's a pretty low one at 12:45. Love to know what it is, anyone :p.
ReplyDeleteAnother at 20:48-49
