Madonna - Vocal Profile/ Range

madonna vocal profile
Vocal Type: Mezzo- Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 octaves 2 notes G2- B5 (approx)
Longest Note: 17 seconds (Ray of Light at Live Earth)
Vocal Pluses: Adapts her vocal style to the music she's singing well. The middle of her range is her strongest suit: it's solid, with a warm colouring and a clear timbre. Her chest voice is bright and sharp. While her head voice can be either soft and delicate, or direct and solid.
Vocal Negatives: Voice becomes thin and nasal, very quickly, as it gets higher up and into the chest range.

Until I have time to do my own research I'll post the video below. However, I'm not inclined to agree with a lot of the notes- you can, if you so chose to.

  2. I think the highest note is correct, but she can sing a bit lower, approx. F3 (like in Sorry). Or maybe the lowest note is lover than A3.

    ReplyDelete
  3. the longest note is incorrect, Madonna can expand upto 17-18s

Clue: Ray of Light (Live 8)

  4. thanks for the input! The live 8 comment was especially good. As for the F3 I could not find it in "sorry". Can you tell me where it is and ill check again? I did however notice the low note i had posted was a semitone lower so i changed that! thanks for all your comments...including the first one which i cant understand!

  5. The lowest note is incorrect, she can hit much lower, she is hitting Eb3 in Like it or not

you can call me A sinner - the A is Eb3. I know it because I'm learning that song.

  6. i think there may be a clip of her hitting a b2. Since i have not found a new site to host my audio files ill try and find the youtube clip and amend the profile accordingly.

  7. I think she is a soprano with autotune and without a contralto, almost tenor. She sings really low.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Nope, she is mostly a lyric soprano/ mezzo.

  9. I really think you should have a deeper analyzation of her live voice, since 1980s/90s Madonna is very different vocally from late 90s-present Madonna. With the vocal lessons from Evita, during the early 00s, it allowed her to access some of those higher notes. It would be worth mentioning, since early Madonna had very bad technique on terms of singing through her nose and throat, while late-90s-current Madonna actually has properly trained techniqued she learned with Evita.

  10. @anon above, we'll update, and expand on this profile when her new album has come out- which I'm very excited about. But you are right about the differences in her singing style over the years! will take that in to account. May create two separate profiles.

  11. No no...Her vocal range is already Eb3 - F5.  Not a big deal on your E3, but she hangs out at 9 below C in Like it or Not. Now, she blows C5# clear out of the water at the end of Ray of Light. It's not exactly a note I'd like to hear her hold for 17 seconds, bless her heart, but she hits it.  Can we give her all 26 of her semitones instead of just 21 of them?  Evey little bit helps.

  12. Somebody look at this: It includes a wierd live version of Like a Virgin in like a German accent with a G#2!! It's on the word "through" in "i made it thru the wilderness, somehow I made it THROUGH." It is deep!  It's at least a B2. Then the scream at the very end of Ray of Light (not the F5 "GOT herself a universe" but the "and I feel - AHHHH), they put studio version at B5!  That's a range of like 36 or 38 semitones. Here:

going beyond, madonna has 4 octaves, and she can prove it in ray of light:

  14. Hmmm....3 octaves maybe, but I seriously doubt she's ever hit four. For instance, in that video you linked to, the supposed 'G2' at 1.15 is actually a G3. (middle C is 'C4' in case you're unsure). 4 octaves is actually a really rare thing for a woman, despite a lot of singers/fans claiming it. I am a pro singer and I've only got three-and-a-half. I can hit B2 on a good day, but it would sound very weak, very few women will ever hit G2. Even professional opera singers rarely have four octaves, and they train for hours and hours a day.

Madonna was never about range anyway - she was more about attitude, the dance, the production, the stage presence. And all the better for it - it would be a dull world if everyone sounded like Mariah Carey.

  15. I think you are right about the G2, I've just taken the video as gospel but just did a check. I think it might actually be c#3 and the B2 could have been anybody, so I'm not sure about that too. Also a lot of the lower notes seem to be an octave lower than reality, and have just been labelled as second octaves notes because of the dark colouring. This whole profile needs a clean up at some stage.

  16. If Madonna can sing a G2, she should release a cover of 'Ole Man River' :OD

  17. Madonna has a cute but matured voice and I often heard it! Fighting for Madonna and her endless music, too! :D

    ReplyDelete
  18. yeah, and i agree with u, but we must remember that madonna always works REALLY hard and her vocals improved A LOT because of the opera lessons while she was making the movie Evita.
i think we just should take a look at ray of light live at oprah or things like that, she can hit 4 octaves if she wants too.
c'mon, let's admit, she's the best female artist of the world <3 haha.

  19. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Lady Gaga has been up front about her admiration for Madonna. But does Madonna share the love?
The "Material Girl" sounded lukewarm in U.S. interviews
released on Friday, calling her influence on Gaga's music "interesting"
    and "amusing." Sometimes.
"I certainly think she references me a lot in her work.
And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well done,"
Madonna, 53, told ABC News in a television interview.
"There's a lot of ways to look at it. I can't really be
annoyed by it...because obviously, I've influenced her," the pop star
    told ABC.
The comparisons between the two divas, both known for
combining provocative stunts with catchy dance-pop hits, came to a head
when Gaga released her "Born This Way" single last February.
The song was instantly likened to Madonna's 1989 hit "Express Yourself".
"When I heard it on the radio .I said that sounds very
familiar," Madonna said. Asked if that felt annoying, Madonna responded,
    "It felt reductive."
Pressed by ABC interviewer Cynthia McFadden whether that was a good or bad thing, Madonna replied "look it up".
In a separate interview in the upcoming issue of
Newsweek, Madonna described "Born This Way" as "a wonderful way to redo
    my song."
"I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was... interesting," she added.
"Born This Way" became an instant hit for Lady Gaga,
25, topping the charts in 19 countries and becoming the fastest selling
    song in iTunes history.
The Grammy-winning singer told U.S. talk show host Jay
Leno in February that she was Madonna's "hugest fan personally and
    professionally."
As for "Born This Way", Gaga told Leno; "The good news
is that I got an e-mail from her (Madonna's) people, and her sending me
their love and complete support on behalf of the single."

  21. It should be said that she can be a very emotive singer, when she sings you believe her. For instance, her elation on Ray of Light is palpable.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 3 octaves.... I'm confused a little bit.. I would say only 2 but whatever

    ReplyDelete
  23. 3 octaves and 2 notes? I don't thin so. She suffers to sing a lot of her stuff live.

Still, I love her voice, specially in higher registers, like in What it feels like for a girl, Ray of Light or Frozen.

  36. Factoid: when scientists made studies in human attraction they found that a woman is most fertile arounddp the middle of her cycle, not only do get looks improve, her voice is judged most attractive due to the surge of extra female hormones like estrogen. By "attractive" they mean a higher timbre than normal. A marker of femininity and fertility. Deeper voices scored low in attractiveness. Men however, are more attractive the deeper their voice.

Therefore, when the fertile period passes, approaching the end of her cycle, a woman's voice sounds deeper as those hormone levels drop! I reckon the reasin why most older ladies voices deepen permanently is because they their female hormones lessen as they approach menopause

I've taken up singing and this awareness really helps. It's like magic when I realize I CAN get those notes and I know which days they generally are. :) hope this wasn't too tmi. Nelly Furtado mentioned in an interview she could sing lower notes more easily in the studio. Wonder if other ladies experienced that?
I'm an amateur but any bit of knowledge helps

  38. Yes, despite common credence, Madonna does have an impressive range, and she has sown it hundreds of times live. People need to understand that she does not use it all the time, like others do. She's not a virtuosa. On the other hand, her voice has had longevity beyond what most people would expect, maybe because she does not overuse it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. She actually sings it live, proof is Live 8.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hear B2-G#6 and isn't she a typical lyric soprano?

I think Madonna's HUGE problem when she is sing live is her perfectionism. She seems to over think when she is live. She has nailed a performance, but others you can tell she is trying really hard. Love her always in any case.

Reductive has been my favorite word ever since this interview came out. For example, Twerking is a reductive form of dance.
