Alicia Keys "A New Day" [New Music]

Alicia Keys has debuted a new song, A New Day, from her upcoming fifth studio album! Yay! Heavy beats, inspirational lyrics and an uplifting sound are what it delivers. As for the vocal, Alicia Keys is sounding coarser and throatier than ever, and much more akin to the live voice that we've heard lately.

Whether this is a sign of things to come from the new album, only time will tell!

What do you guys think: Hit or Miss?

  3. Sounds like she's trying to sound "different" from mainstream chart stuff yet the same. For me she( or rather the music) just ended up sounding.."messy".
Funnily enough it reminds me enormously of what Sara Watkins, a bluegrasser, tried to do on her last album and with similar effect ..as far as I am concerned... neither worked and simply left me wishing they'd just get on with straightforward singing in the style suiting their voices best.

  4. I quite like a bit of Keys but this is awful, its far too clattery for my liking!

It sounds like an elephant having a seizure on the worlds largest drum kit...and her voice sounds like its hurting her to sing!

I admire her for trying to be different but crikey at least make something that the ears will enjoy listening to... :S

  6. "
elephant having a seizure on the worlds largest drum kit " ...lol. I'm guessing her hubby (
Swizz Beatz ) has had some influence on her style. It kinda sounds like the song she did with beyonce- in terms of it being heavy on the drums. That was produced with Swizz Beatz, and so was this (just found that out now) . So could be a sign of things to come.

  8. LOL Like Suey says "to each his own". But actually..I also like the song. I just don't like the instrumentation. It has a messy feel to me and this Alicia Keys tune imo suffers from the same.
Like Sara's song better btw. To me a real shame that the whole album is songs I would like if it wasn't for that instrumentation. It gives me a headache after 3 songs. :(

  9. Alicia...what is going through your head? It sounded like the beginning of a good song...but then it just gets messy with the piano and the drums and it just all sounds clattered. The Piano piece doesn't even sound melodic its just...banging. I think Alicia's voice is also possibly aging and its harder for her to maintain the upper register notes she used to be able to sing with ease. Her voice sounds very raspy (Much more so than it used to be).

  10. this low quality reproduction does it no justice.

  11. The messy sound is the actual production. It has nothing to do with the quality of the video

  12. After giving the song another shot...I'd have to say I like it a lot more once you get past the beginning and a bit of the chorus. But it still sounds...messy. I find that unusual for Alicia. Her Piano pieces usually compliment the beat as well as the song as a whole but in this its like they just threw the piano in because its Alicia's trademark sound. It sounds clanky. The song would be better if they added more Lyrics to replace the constant "Ehh's" and reproduced the song with less of the clashing of several sounds trying to meld together. I'm hoping her album won't reflect on this though...

  13. First of all I got to confess Alicia Keys was actually the only contemporary R&B diva I've always adored. I loved her versatility, her skills in writing songs which had beginning, a moment of development and coda, her courage in using old fashioned soul and R&B tricks (harmonies). I liked her quite traditional approach to musical composition. I also liked her approach to show business - she's always seemed to deliberately balance on the edge between mainstream and niches. I really appreciated her artistry.
And this one is a disappointment. Messy, noisy and stomping. However second listening left me with better impression (a bit). I agree with Brian - too much "ehh" which is fecking annoying (I've got allergy I think). Very flat and compressed vocal but I'd like to belive it's quality of video issue. Last minute is absolutely horrible.
They should add more percussion to this track in my opinion (sorry Stuey). Additional rhythm would make this structure polyrhythmic giving nice "tribal" sound. I can hear slight "tribal" touch in this track even now, but reduced and not really satisfying. I have mixed emotions. It's far too annoying for my liking but I can still find couple pros.

  14. Let's just be honest...Alicia isn't trying to sound unique she is trying attempting to put out a hip-hop/pop friendly song like the rest of the Female carbon copies out in the industry. I'm not ragging on her though because I LOVE Alicia Keys but to get mainstream attention you don't always have to change yourself. In her case her mellow sound that is calm and soothing. Now I can tell you right now will this song get play on the radio. Definetely, at least in Houston I know. It is one of those songs that will grow one someone after awhile.
