Vocal Profile: Melody Thornton

Vocal Type:Soprano
Vocal Range:3 Octaves and a semitone D3-Eb6
Whistle Register:No
Vocal Pluses: The quality of Thornton's voice could easily be described as dynamic, robust and highly flexible. She has the ability to easily manipulate her instrument to fit the material in which she is singing, such as soft and gentle (most of PCD records, doing backing vocals) or more forceful and direct (Bulletproof, Hit the Ground Running and Sweet Vendetta to name but a few from P.O.Y.B.L)

Regarding the texture and quality of the voice one could say the lower extremities sound well supported but tired, slightly flat. The mid range and belting range, in particular, sound crystal clear, contain a incisive tone and feel more comfortable for Thornton to access than that of the lower. The voice from the bottom to the top sounds well connected, illustrated by Thornton's adept use of melisma throughout the entire range.

The head voice however is where she really shines. The tone is such to be powerful, expertly placed and far healthier sounding than the rest of the voice. She is able to access this part of the range from approx G5 right up to Eb6, retaining a full strong tone as well as a fantastic flexibility and fluidity that makes traversing this area easy and free.

Overall Melody is a technical singer who possesses a voice that is for the most part well placed, distinctive in its sound and very energetic.

Vocal Negatives:Criticisms have often been levelled at her for her over indulgence in melisma, which often detracts from the melody and nature of her material. This has caused some to accuse the singer of not always being in full control of her instrument. The tone of her voice can also be seen as overbearing, particularly in high belts where the voice takes on a stronger more slicing nature.

Thanks to Stuey for creating this profile!

  5. Hey! Thanks! I really enjoyed making this (at around 6am no less lol) I loved Bulletproof too, it really grew on me.

I can see where you are coming from about her voice, a lot of people I know don't like her voice as its a bit full on at times, I don't tend to listen to her for prolonged periods of time incase I get a migraine LOL

  7. I loved the cover of Bulletproof when I first heard it, as well. I think it's fantastic (expect for the end, haha).

  8. I like her voice overall but for me the negatives outweigh the positives. Every time I even think about her singing, I think about how terrible her tone gets into higher belts. I loved the Bulletproof cover but I can't even listen to the end.

  11. Love it! Mel is one of my fave singers at the moment. I love how she's improved from PCD vocally to right not (P.O.Y.B.L), especially the way she plays around with her head voice at the end of "Bulletproof", that A5 & Bb5 were amazing. So beautiful.

  12. I agree, she is a fantastic singer! I even loved when she did Popstar to Operastar here in the UK, it showed me that she really does know her voice and what its capable of! Sometimes I wish she would reign it in but yeh she is a new fav of mine!

  13. Aye I have thought that too, it can become a bit like whoa!! Girl calm it down lol

  14. I agree. I was so happy she was on that show. She really took the shows tips very serious in improving her voice. Sometimes she is a bit eh, but I love the imperfections in people's voices at times, so it's not as bothersome to me.

  18. I disagree. She has so much potential but if anything, most of her notes are not well-supported at all. Clearly this girl hasn't had any professional voice training and I hope she'd hire one.

  19. Sometimes the higher reaches of her voice sound very rouge and brazen. She was given minimal operatic training for her appearance on Popstar to Operastar but for consistency of tone she could prob do with a few lessons, Ps DD Melody is not on your list on the vocal range page :(

  20. Spunky, cutting voice that has the ability to attack notes with its fiery, brazen color. In terms of PCD, I often felt her vocals were an important element is giving songs their power. Solo, I think she needs to balance her powerful attacks with a little more lyricism for a good contrast. She has a strong instrument that needs to properly deploy its abilities in the correct contexts.

  21. I was not aware that she had a profile Im glad she does cause. Her issue is that she attacks songs every opportunity she get instead of focusing pitch melody and phasing. Theres is a time to attack, as you mentioned she needs to find that balance. I have heard quite a bit of her material, the songs where she holds back and show vunerabillity is where she shines most. I have heard some say she tries to imitate Christina Aguilera, I can her simular inflections in there tones in some points, but I think Melody is a different things. I think if Christina did not push her laurynx down she would actually sound very close.

  22. She's not a soprano. She was on pop star to opera star and the classified her as a mezzo-soprano.
