Remember, That One Time, When Taylor Swift Tried To Be Lana Del Rey

taylor swift music video still 2013

So, I sat down to watch the new (I should really call it "latest" because its been out for two weeks) Taylor Swift video for "I Knew You Were Trouble". Having forgotten how the song sounded, the introspective spoken introduction, and the premise that the unusual (for Taylor) visuals were laying down were surprisingly intriguing. Then, after two minutes of reeling me in, the song actually started and I was like:

I quite like "Trouble"-it's not the best track off of Red, mind- but the video's attempt to confer maturity by being "gritty" and having a two minute monologue was never going to work once the light and bouncy production kicked in. In fact, it works as a little bit of an anticlimax.

If you want to play with the grown-ups, Taylor, you're going to have to work on having the material to back it up...Oh, and as the title of the post suggests, can't nobody tell me that this video wasn't "inspired" by Lana Del Rey's "Ride". NO-BO-DY, I TELLS YA!!! Same director, or not!

Check out the video for Taylor Swift's new single "I Knew You Were Trouble," below. (Then check out the visuals for Lana's "Ride".)

  4. Anthony Mandler, is the director for BOTH videos, so I guess the similarities were very obvious. DARN THAT MAN WITH NO OTHER IDEAS FOR A VIDEO.

  9. When I watched "I Knew You Were Trouble", it also hit me that it was so familiar. Taylor cannot pull this kinda bad girl act; even though she's jumping from relationships like a fly finding another source of shit.
The reason this 2 videos are the same, is because they have the same director, Anthony Mandler.

  11. The concepts were very similar- but the delivery was drastically different. Was there not a better song choice for this style of music video from the album? Even the more "Serious" tone of the intro was rather kind of hard to take seriously with the Tone and Delivery of Taylors voice. She sounded too...idk...gossipy. Whereas Lana sounded like she was telling a story.
