[Review] Destiny's Child Flop With First New Song In Eight Years

destinys child music

I'd read about Destiny's Child reuniting for Beyonce's gig at the 2013 Super Bowl, as well as the promise of new material from the trio, just this morning. I didn't have to wait too long for this new music to materialise, as the snoozefest that is Nuclear has just hit the net. Boy am I glad I didn't have much time to let the anticipation of a new DC song really build, because I would have been crushingly disappointed if I'd waited weeks only to hear this dud was the only thing waiting for me.

Supposedly a left over from an old recording session, the Pharrell Williams produced song is a lazy affair that has the cynic in me concluding that it's only been released to make the greatest hits more attractive to buyers who already have DC's back catalogue in one form or another.(Note: this is greatest hits number two from the ladies, with no new music being released by them as a collective between that album and this one, entitled Love Songs.)

If the Children of Destiny really wanted to honour their fans, or even the memory of the group- and I suppose they never said they wanted to do either- they should have hit the studio again, recording something that was representative of where they are now as women and a group. (Perhaps them not doing so tells us all we need to know.)  Instead we've been given a love song that is flat, dreary and not worthy of the hype that being the first new song in eight years from the legendary group would generate!

There was a reason why Nuclear was left off of Destiny Fulfilled: it wasn't good then, it's certainly not good now.

  1. Hmmm not sure what to make of it.

  2. It was good until the Chorus left me hanging with it's boring drawl.....Not a bad song but not captivating either......For me it stands at 6/10....Maybe I'll fall in love with it after several repeat listens.....

  3. I was honestly never a fan, so I can't really say much. Its an alright song. Not terrible- but not great either.

  4. not into destiny Child, but from what I read these are old recorded tracks put together on album to finish there contract, as they where obligated for one more album, they found a clever way to do so.

  5. I never really got the chance to listen to it, I fell asleep after 5 seconds. But in all seriousness this is clearly just a cash in for those gullible enough to believe that this is 'good' music...

I will not be rushing to 7digital to download this guff put it that way!

  6. Not every song has to be for the clubs or a big ballad, it's a good song, especially to be a bonus track, it's not like they are making this a single for a new album together.

    ReplyDelete
  7. The song is like an album song you would not release as a single. I really think the music executives are business men who don't know music and use a business model vs creativity to produce, market, and sell music.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Terrible. have not been so disappointed in a song in a very long time.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah, is a very weak song and not what one would have expected after so many years without any new music. I think they didn't wanted to hit the studio again because they all have many individual projects but their record label wanted to keep milking the cow and they decided to release this compilation with one unreleased song from the previous era.

  10. After forcing myself to listen to this song about 40 times....I have to admit I like it. That boring chorus is doing something to my avian influenced soul that makes me want to dance like a demoiselle crane on the frozen lakes of Japan.

Seriously people, force yourselves to listen to this song about a good 30-50 times and I swear you will begin to like it. And yes...I'm dead serious....lol

  11. You must be talking about the musical equivalent of Stockholm syndrome. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  12. lol, IDK.....I just really like this song for some reason....

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh Opie, you should be a musical psychiatrist :D
Rid our minds of the horrific mental illnesses caused by overexposure to pop heavyweights such us Mariah and Beyonce, and gradually reintroduce us to real music. Just... no shock therapy, please?

    ReplyDelete
  14. What do you expect, when the lead singer- because let's face it, the others are backing vocalists- is a common voiced, plagiarist diva?

    ReplyDelete
  15. LOL you seem to be rather alone in that. All I can say is...''stand tall and proud'' :-)

    ReplyDelete
  16. What a huge didsapointment, I didn't like this song at all even listening several times didnT grew up on me what a waste of time.

    ReplyDelete
  17. They always had ONLY good singles, most of their album tracks are filler material. This is is a filler. Not bad, quite solid sounding, but not a single or hit material. Just a FILLER.

    ReplyDelete
  18. ...lol, I really did not enjoy this song. But it's not surprising, this is to be preformed at the Super Bowl where Beyonce is set to take the stage since she will be smack in the middle of promo for a new album and I'm sure they didn't want a single that would outshine whatever Beyonce's team has planned.

    ReplyDelete
  19. U r so rite pretty much everi 2nd person sownds like beyonce, shes like totally de worst singa eva !!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Not common voiced, not a plagiarist. Voice of our generation and creative.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Real Music? Please elaborate.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This song grew on me though...It isn't a fav of mine...I just like the harmonies....the only bad part about the song is that Michelle messed up the weight..... She should have song it lower or something..... I would have gave the song a 7/10 then. lol

    ReplyDelete
  23. Pfffft Beyonce's voice is nowhere special enough for that title. And she is a plagiarist- "If I Were a Boy", "Countdown"... the list goes on.

  26. no. i'm pretty sure it is. Beyonce is perfection and anyone who says otherwise is wrong :).

    ReplyDelete
  27. LOL 4 days ago it was 6/10. And now after listening 40 more times it only went up to 7/10?

That doesn't inspire one who would right now give the song 4/10 to listen enough to start actually liking it. By that scale it would take at least another 120 times. And even though I agree their voices together are pleasant...if I think of the 120 songs I could be listening to instead, somehow that doesn't seem worth it. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think Reiko was jokingly refering to the kind of music I often link to.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What are you saying? She has great dynamics, unparalleled technique, and flawless breath control. No one in pop music is as talented her. If there is, please inform me. And that's not plagiarism, that's taking inspiration from other works and applying them to your own. All artists have done at one point or another. Because Beyonce is one of the prominent musicians of our day, it's only natural that she receives the most scrutiny for it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. well as long it's a joke, and he doesn't actually mean pop music is not real music, then I have no objections.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Just saying how Reiko MIGHT have meant that. I am however obviously not Reiko.

    ReplyDelete
  32. How about we let Reiko speak for himself next time?

    ReplyDelete
  33. OMG another ridiculous stan.
If you want to take that line...how about you keep out of a comment clearly directed at me? Really not your say at all whether a comment directed at me meets your aproval or objection.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm a ridiculous stan? You're an argumentative, and frankly unpleasant person. Like seriously, calm yourself. When I said, "well as long it's a joke, and he doesn't actually mean pop music is not real music, then I have no objections." I intended on his answer, not yours. Understood?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes an extreme stan a that. Whatever I may or may not be doesn't negate that fact. And yes I get it but you don't because my point remains...you are still talking about a comment addressed to me.

Calling me argumentative when you are busy arguing a remark clearly directed speciifically at me is hilarious. You related to riri/linda/deathnes by any change?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I admire your passion. You continue to pursue this matter, even though you are well-aware of your error. Read this if you can honey, I DO NOT CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK. My remark was not directed towards you to begin with. You were wrong is answering. And okay, I'll continue to enjoy my 16-time Grammy winner :)
By the way, I'm not a stan, I just hate it when rude and ignorant people like you, go on loud-mouthing about stuff. Can you accept that some people have musical interests that are different than yours?
As the Great Beyonce Knowles would say, "You are dismissed." ;)

    ReplyDelete
  37. And I'm sure Opie will continue to enjoy her 27-time Grammy winner.

    ReplyDelete
  38. There are plenty of people around the world as talented vocally, and more talented vocally than Beyonce in this day and age.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Haha, she can listen to what ever what she wants. It's not my business.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That's not what I'm arguing. I'm saying that her voice, coupled with her popularity, makes her the voice of our generation. Can you name one pop singer better than Beyonce?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Why limit to pop? It's not the only genre of music.

I can name several singers across the world who are as vocally capable, if not more so than Beyonce.

Vanessa Amorosi is the first singer who comes to mind.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I believe a voice of a generation has to be popular.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Success =/= Vocal talent.
I never called into question her "title", you claimed no one was as talented as her and I strongly disagreed.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I said no one in pop music is as talented as her. If it came across to you like that, I apologize.

    ReplyDelete
  45. LOL indeed I will. Much like I will also enjoy a number of less and no Grammy winning singers. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  46. You're a creep. Bye.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm rolling my eyes at these comments; Beyonce is ridiculously overrated. Yes, she is a talented vocalist, but that does not mean that she is the "voice of the generation". I do not consider p*ssy popping and weave thrashing, while lip sync to pre-recorded vocals worthy of being called an ideal performance. As far as pop music goes, Pink is a better performer than Beyonce, which these Beyawnce stans on here will of course refute. "that's taking inspiration from other works and applying them to your own.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I so agree on P!nk being a better performer and for my money...more interesting songs.
I think Beyonce is very good but also over rated often. What's with that ''only one who can sing and dance at the same time'' claim especially?
So can P!nk and seems to me loads of showgirls on Vegas and Broadway. In fact it has been done since the vaudeville days of showbiz.
    Here's one fine example :-)

  49. Whose more iconic again? And personally, I just like Beyonce's voice more than Pinks.

    ReplyDelete
  50. As I do not want to fight, I'll just recommend that you watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaN2TbWMvuw

The person who made this video knows a lot about music and vocals (as you can tell if you check other videos in his/her channel) and decided to put that title to Beyoncé and in that video he/she explains why. For people with little knowledge about what makes a person a good singer and vocalist, this video is really useful as you will understand how amazing Beyoncé's voice is, how much she has worked to improve it over the years, and how wonderful are the things and abilities that she has with her instrument.

  51. First of all, I am a girl. A female. I don't know how anyone can mistake me for a guy with a name like Reiko.

Also, I adore pop music. I was, of course, making a joke. That doesn't mean my point isn't valid; pop isn't as authentic (and the artists not as credible) as it once was.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Lol dragging poor Bey in you intellectually challenged stan...
as Mariah would say... did say in her song Migrate... "BYE!"

    ReplyDelete
  53. "If I were a Boy" is actually a valid point. She wasn't taking inspiration. She tried to steal the songwriting credits or somth. Not very clear on this, but I think she was sued... and the person who sued her won.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Actually, neither is truly iconic right now. They're not on the levels of Aretha, Whitney, Mariah, Mary J, or a billion others I could name- people who are REALLY iconic.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Not sure why that title ''voice of a generation'' would hold such significance but I am getting the impression if the only standard is technical skill and her being the youngest( as in of the last 15 years)...sure, Beyonce is it. No doubt

But I think some people feel the title best technician of her generation would cover it better and feel the holder of ''voice'' of a generation or icon requires the voice itself to be more recognisable. The way Streisand's is, or Carey's, or Aretha's.
Those voices jumped out instantly. Before they can even get at a ''melisma'' or some such.
Personally I feel Beyonce's voice in itself lacks a certain Wow factor.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh definitely not (except for Mary J, I don't think she deserves to be in the same category as them). However, Beyonce is very iconic today, and living in a very Urban city, I know first hand how much girls and guys look up to her.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I agree, but the fact that there are very few good singers in pop music today makes it so that Beyonce is the only contestant.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Well now, that would depend on which factor one feels carries the greater weight. Voice or technical skill.
Or maybe they should hold equal weight and this generation simply has no definitive ''voice of a generation'' to the same degree/standard other generations had. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I don't understand that claim either. I wouldn't call Beyonce's dance routines particularly complex. Also, there are countless singers and groups in Asia who sing and dance at the same time. I do commend her though because singing and dancing simultaneously is definitely no easy feat, especially as the singer ascends through their registers. Also, I have to say that pink took her performance game a step up when she flew through the air in a trapeze while maintaining stable vocals. Beyonce could never. ;)

I'm surprised those showgirls were able to move in such restricting outfits lol.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yes, we knew mermaids can sing but who knew they could hop so charmingly aswell. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  61. I am with you there....here voice is very...well average! There is little uniqueness to be heard!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Indeed *cough Kelly Clarkson vocal deity cough* ;)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for this, but I feel that Kelly Clarkson too lacks uniqueness as far as her voice goes. I've never really been able to distinguish Kelly from many other idol graduates (and other pop/rock or pop singers) the way I can quickly identify a vocal from Jennifer Hudson or Mariah Carey.

Her tone doesn't seem very special to me. I've actually (embarrasingly enough) mistaken her for a certain, extremely pitchy and vocally limited diva a couple of times.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Haha no hate, I totally get you. There is singers out there that get raved about but I just cannot see what is so special about them personally, its a matter of taste really.

I just love Kelly in that I feel her voice is very dynamic, versatile but also very human, a lot of sopranos tend to veer towards the overly technical I feel sometimes but Kelly seems to keep it grounded and real.

Lol who was the diva you mistook her for?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Um, uh.... katy perry... lol.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ooooh too far hahaha nobody is as bad as Perry....

    ReplyDelete
  67. I mistook her for Katy twice... both times while listening to Darkside. The belting clued me in to the fact that it was definitely not Katy.

    ReplyDelete
  68. It did, it really did.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm with both of you somewhat. I agree Kelly's voice lacks uniqueness but I do like it a lot as I agree with Stuey that it has a grounded and ''real'' quality to it.

    ReplyDelete
  70. That's not a very common name, so excuse me.

    ReplyDelete
  71. At the end, she goes...
    "MIGRATE~ bye,"

    ReplyDelete
  72. You're excused.

    ReplyDelete
  73. That is perhaps the most out of left field Mariah reference I've ever heard. It even had a Mariah fan like me, that knows almost every lyric to every Mariah song, scratching his head. Also, I'm not sure what she says there, it could be "Mi" to perhaps reiterate "Migrate", but idk.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think "bye" fits better. We probably need to get both our ears checked.
