[Watch] Mariah Carey Plays In 2013 With Live Concert In Austrailia

What better way to start the new year with than some live Mariah Carey. Putting on a show for our Australian cousins, the Diva with the five-octave range helped to make the turn of the year one to remember for those lucky enough to have joined her at the sold out venue where she performed on Tuesday.

Sounding vocally fresh, Mariah took the 4,500 strong crowd at the Gold Coast Convention Centre through a whistle-stop tour of her catalogue of hits. From massive sellers like Emotions and We Belong Together, to fan favourites like Close My Eyes and Butterfly, Mariah looked comfortable and happy spending New Years with her adoring "Lambily".

The highlight of the evening had to be the impromptu song Mariah sang as the technicians tried to fix the sound issues she was suffering. It showcased just how strong her voice still is- especially in the lower part of her belting range- as well as the kooky personality we have all come to love and expect from her.

Check out the videos (I could find) from the concert below. Will add more as they surface! (Can't wait to see her singing Butterfly)

  3. mariah is so great!! though i noticed that her voice has gotten more darker maybe because of the child birth. anyways she kicked off my new year!!!

  4. Don't Forget About Us (and I think Closed My Eyes) surfaced. I think that's it though. Also, your link for My All leads to Always Be My Baby.

  5. Thanks!! Will find them and amend "My All".

  6. From what i can tell, her voice sounds great but it sounds like she lipped the big notes in shake it off, don't forget about us (she did do whistle though:3) and we belong together(i actually never know with this one.) I still love her and can't wait for her new album

  7. She sounds strong, crystalline and more importantly confident!

One thing that pisses me off about Mariah is people's perception of what she is actually like, they believe her to be a stuck up diva who will dump on anyone to get what she wants. This is so not the case! Yeh she can shade when she wants but from what I have seen in interviews ect she seems really down to earth and actually very funny.

I want her new album like yesterday lol hurry Mariah, this lamb cannot take the wait much longer!!!

  8. DivaDevotee, I have a question, do we even know what the setlist was? I see conflicting reports that state emotions and make it happen were on the setlist, but I see no evidence on that from other published reports. I've seen no mention of butterfly either. I wish there was some clarity here. ):

I've found multiple sources that say the setlist was this:

    SETLIST:
    01. Can't Take That Away - Dance Mix
    02. Touch My Body
    03. Shake It Off
    04. My All
    05. Always Be My Baby
    06. I'll Be There
--. Trey Lorenz: Rock With You
    07. Obsessed
    08. Don't Forget About Us
    09. Close My Eyes
    10. Hero
    11. We Belong Together
    Encore:
    12. All I Want For Christmas Is You (Snippet)
    13. Auld Lang Syne

But, apparently there were other songs there. So, I'm not quite sure about the other songs. Regardless, she sounds like she's in pristine condition vocally. I can't wait to see what 2013 brings her because 2012 wasn't all that bad - if you just skip over Triumphant. Her voice has really solidified and she even belted F#5, hit a d7 and went down to a C3, which is what she usually hits live (i.e, no decline. No secret Mariah doesn't flex her low low range).

  9. Really? I think she lipped a couple of notes in DFAU, but, she did hit a variety of them live, they don't sound like the recordings, and they're much lower than the notes she hits on the recordings. Shake it off doesn't sound too lipped either with a couple of belts, and, I'd be willing to give her a pass since she's recently demonstrated a beautiful falsetto. WBT is usually lipped but I haven't taken a look at it. Either way, she hit a bunch of great notes in Always, My All, and Hero.

  10. I've seen that same list as you on MariahDaily, but I read somewhere "Butterfly" and "Make it happen" was on it too. I'm thinking Mariah Daily's setlist is the real deal; i mean when was the last time she sang "Butterfly" live. I'll see if I can dig up the article that mentioned "Butterfly"

  11. I was a little disappointed in the performance. Not by her vocals whatsoever or even her stage presence or anything as such. Just...her song choice. Her catalogue to me has sort of become bland. She always sings the same songs and even though she speaks highly of some of her more personal masterpieces she never sings them. I want to hear her sing Melt away, I am free, Close my Eyes, Vanishing, Heck even Someday would switch it up (although shes rumored to hate the song along with most of the songs from her first album). Although songs like Always Be my baby, and We belong together are definite chart smashers and powerhouse songs- they feel a little less meaningful and more shallow than a lot of her other glory songs and ballads. Mariahs a great song writer. I think its time she shows off more of her songs to a younger audience on live television or in concert.

  12. Voice sounds great, Mezzo tend to darken as they get older so I think thats why she her lower notes sound stronger than her high notes

  13. Eh, in your defense, Butterfly does have live potential. She performed Underneath the Stars/Mariah's Theme for the first time in forever. Close My Eyes is making a resurge after not being performed in forever. She even sung some of babydoll for national lamb day or something, if memory serves me right. It's clear she's taking some of her older songs back to the performing stage - I mean, DFAU seems to be the red-headed step child of her #1s. I just don't think she'll be performing Butterfly anytime soon, at least, until someone convinces her that using it as an out-tro is an awful idea.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Also, sorry to spam up your page like Pitbull guest star raps but I found a full version of DFAU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5jTcxeltQs). There's also about a billion different versions of My All floating around too, so I'll try to see if anyone has the quality of the latter while retaining the length of the former.

  15. I think Always Be My Baby and WBT are one of her more meaningful songs, imo. Although I'm going to get flack for this, I think Hero is probably one of the blandest songs ever written. Hell, most of music box sounds like Mariah was bored out of her mind and not very satisfied. WBT definitely had emotion to it, and Always Be My Baby was and is a favorite of hers but I agree that they're a little more tired and not as raw as some of her more personal songs. She sung Close My Eyes this performance, and, rumors are, Nick Cannon is trying to persuade her to sing Someday and Vanishing again, which would definitely be the first good thing he's ever done when it comes to Mariah LOL.

  16. She isn't a mezzo though. Most people agree she's a Soprano and she considers herself an Alto. She's anything but a Mezzo imo. I think age has slightly darkened her voice, but, her voice used to be more huskier and darker - in terms of color - in her debut even though now she can go lower, she still has more warmth than she did in her debut when it came to lower notes/lower register

    ReplyDelete
  17. ''I think Hero is probably one of the blandest songs ever written''

No flack from me. More like a big ''thanks'' for saying that. Now add ''Imagine'' to that category as well and you'll be my hero for the day, nay...week! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I know for a fact that if she decides to sing Someday again its going to sound completely different since the reason why she hated the song to begin with was because Tommy completely destroyed it and turned into a different song.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I thought her voice sounded strained on the belts.
BUT OMG I HEARD SHE SANG LOVE TAKES TIME!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. OH OH I JUST HATE HERO.
    It's totally bland, you're right.

    ReplyDelete
  21. i think the general census around here is that she is a Mezzo that has the abillity to lighten her voice and and sing in her upper register depending on which placement she chooses. Her lower range is to well developed and even now her voice is darker than ever. Actually she is a Colutura Mezzo Soprano

    ReplyDelete
  22. I find imagine bland too. Not to mention, Lennon never really gave up anything so what's the point of that song?? I never got the hype around Lennon as a whole tbh. I mean, the Beatles were definitely revolutionary but, without context, there's nothing that particularly sticks out imo. I hate how people always refer to them as wholesome/the cream of the crop while their songs were probably just as raunchy/drug related as rap today. They were just more subtle about it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah. I'd love a new performance of Someday.

But, Brian, you might be in luck. Apparently, Mariah performed Love Takes Time and Can't Let Go (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YpbmCtIc6hY) Which is a step up and a shock from her normal lineup.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Still plaguing this post, DivaDevotee but, I did find Can't Let Go (!!!!) and Love Takes Time (!!!!!!!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YpbmCtIc6hY

    ReplyDelete
  25. There was a little strain, but she's had that since Butterfly. Her E5s in I'll Be There were marvelous and her notes in My all were amazing.

And she did sing Love Takes Time. I linked it in the post above!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Huh? The general census around here is that she's a Soprano. What type of Soprano she is up for debate. Her page lists out just every type of Soprano with people bickering over it, but there's no doubt that she's a Soprano.

    ReplyDelete
  27. LOL forget hero for the week, I think I love you.
That whole Lennon adoration has always been beyond me. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. AHAHA. I've had a grudge against imagine ever since our teacher decided to override a class's popular idea to play One Sweet Day at our graduation (especially since a third grader died that year and our graduation would be dedicated to her in memory) and went with Imagine instead. My wrath for that basic song has lived on ever since. It's made a monster, you can say.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That kinda thing will do it alright.
My grudge is mainly with it being considered such ''deep'' lyrics when really they are truly inane and are really asking you to imagine a world without passion. Without deep feelings.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah i don't know where this guy is getting this from. Almost EVERYONE here thinks she's a soprano. Just go to her vocal profile lol. LYRIC SOPRANO. It annoy's me how people are like "she's an alto" and really alto is not a voice type.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Her voice doesn't have the same weight as a Soprano, or the coloring of one, and her tessitura is clearly higher than that of a Mezzo. She has incredible range and can carry a decent tone down into the lower octaves- but her voice shines like no other in its mix and head registers. Plus the brightness she achieves when belting I think obviously sells her as a Soprano. And also even though the Whistle register can be achieved by any voice- usually high Sopranos have an easier time finding the placement for it than other voices. She believes herself to be an Alto (aka mezzo) that can access her higher registers because of her nodules. But its pretty obvious that with how much ease she has that its not so.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Is there an in between for voices...To me she lies in between mezzo-soprano and soprano. She has a dark, rich and resonant lower range like a dramatic mezzo-soprano but the light weight girly belts with amazing ornamentation like a coloratura soprano. I'm ever so confused about this woman and I refuse to try and classify her.

My point in this is that, you have a select few singers with some what dark and heavy lower ranges but very light weight and bright upper chest ranges. I'm one, although I don't wish to compare to Mrs. Carey. She is great. But what do you call people who have relatively high weight in lower range, little weight in the upper range and a voice capable of extreme elasticity.

To my knowledge the only thing that comes close is a soprano sfagato and I know good damn well not to label her as one in a place like this. The only thing I can say is she is a pop equivalent of a soprano sfagato but I'm a lil rusty so I need some enlightenment from you guys.

Can we make up a damn classification for her and call her a robusto coloratura mezzo-soprano? I mean every part of her range is just great with a rich lower range, elastic belting range and an show stopping head voice. JMHO....

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't know. Honestly i sorta feel the same way about classifying her. Honestly she's probably (right now vocal comfort wise) a mezzo. But for some reason i believe she was a soprano. Then again we could waste time discussing this. I think she along with Whitney our just two voice's that are great but people tend to argue about who is what and etc. I originally thought she was a soprano because of her whistle range and her ease in the upper belt area. For me a mezzo would sound well belting and in the middle. Honestly i don't think her voice (to me) sounds amazing until she reaches the upper ranges. Then again she is also very comfortable with her lower range. I am sure she is a coloratura. Weather that be a soprano or mezzo is up to debate. Early 90's music of her sort of gave me the impression of soprano (Someday, Dreamlover, Love takes time, etc) I'm not an expert so i could be wrong. We have to remember Mariah was trained by her mother (who was an opera singer) so most likely she trained all parts of her voice. Though i think i remember seeing a interview where Mariah said she would sing really high notes when she was young and her mother was like that was a C6 or something. Or something like that. We should also consider that voice's get darker with age and so people ranges change. Mariah particularly has a very nice low range. You should check out her jazz performance if you haven't seen it yet. And finally i think her profile does need to be amended. I'm pretty sure we can call her a coloratura soprano. Sorry for my rant:/

  34. Mariah is not the pop equivalent to a soprano sfagato....
    Mina Mazzini is.

There are inbetween vocal types, however Mariah's voice doesn't fit them.

Her lower range is far from that of a dramatic mezzo, it's dark in contrast to her upper range but compared to other dramatic mezzos her lower range is drastically lighter.

She is a lyric coloratura soprano with a lovely lower extension. She's the equivalent to Ingeborg Hallstein in the world of pop.

    ReplyDelete
  35. You basically said what i came to in my post lol. I just can't hear her as being a mezzo.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, I'll sat this. She is just a comfortable singer in all parts of her range so determining what she is just difficult. She could be a coloratura soprano like you say. Her lower range just confuses me. So let me take out the fact that her lower range confuses me. All I can say is that her tessitura is very high to be mezzo imho and her tone is girly.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Her voice "rings" in the upper belting register and head voice and whistle. Those are CLEAR signs of soprano. Beyonce is a mezzo soprano. That's an example for you. Listen to Fantasy by mariah she has great control over her head voice. After the "I'm in heaven, with my boyfriend..." She goes up to a G5 i think and also hits a A5.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I honestly didn't read your comment, no offense.

I was just skimming through the comments and saw "Soprano Sfogato" and felt the need to say something lol.

I agree,, even now in her current state, when you compare her voice to other mezzos her voice sounds strikingly different. Even to a lighter mezzo voice like Beyonce you can tell that Mariah just doesn't belong to that fach.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think Emotions is the best showing of Mariah being a soprano, that or Subtle Invitation. Those lines of high belting with that bright and ringing quality just scream soprano.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Alright. Thanks for the clarification. Mariah just has one of the most interesting voices ever.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I forgot about emotions lol. YES. Emotions is the actual best showing. I also think the higher parts of I don't wanna cry also scream soprano. Also Someday is good too i think

  42. I don't listen to much classical, but does anyone else think that 1:19 in the first video sound classical? Lol...
