[Cover] Lana Del Rey Attempts A Leonard Cohen Song! *GASP*

I did not wake up today thinking I'd be hearing new music from Lana Del Rey, but that's just what's happened!! Sharing with us a little bit of her own musical tastes, Lana has just released a cover of Leonard Cohen's Chelsea Hotel No. 2. For what purpose (New album? For fun? Because she was bored?), Lana hasn't revealed yet; but new music is new music and I'm receiving it with open arms and fawning gratitude!

There's none of the sweeping production that has become almost synonomous with Lana's music, rather the backing mimics the original in it's simplicity, with just a guitar to accompany the vocal. It takes a brave individual to cover a Leonard Cohen song so faithfully- as the comparisons (and thus criticisms) are so much easier to draw- but I think Lana Del Rey might actually surprise a few people with this sensitive and expressive rendition.

Check it out- as well as the original- below.

  2. I am not one surprised by her understanding of Leonard Cohen song. I'd say she herself is very much a similar type of songwriter.
And considering Cohen's style of singing, I'm also not really srprised her vocal issues really fit a Cohen song as well.
Not sure I want to hear her do this live...might end up the same level as that Taylor Swift Opry performance. ;-D

But all in all...I think any comparison will not end up a negative one. ( unless one runs into a Cohen stan. No doubt in such eyes nobody can compete with the Man himself)

  5. Her voice is just so damn beautiful. I love the carelessness and faked "laziness" of her singing.

  6. Yeah that is what I meant...you were killing with kindness. Like when a friend asks what you think of his girlfriend and you think she is not pretty...you will say '' she has a nice personalty''.

  7. Ehhhh, I thought the song was alright... but I couldn't help but notice how beautiful she looked. I usually never think she looks nice.

  8. It's the lips, isn't it? They always make me think she looks sort of... cheap and trashy XD

  10. Lol yes but you didn't mention the actual song. Just her looks. Not disagreeing on that btw. She is a pretty girl. But the lips are too big in an faked manner. :-)

  11. Last time, about 2009 I thought everytime I saw Rihanna her lips were getting bigger. But Lana topped it off. :x

  12. I absolutely love this cover, but speaking of new music, I don't think you ever got around to reviewing Lana's Paradise EP. I know you talked about Ride and Burning Desire, but I'm curious to know what you thought of Paradise as her latest effort, although I understand it's just a rerelease and not a full album.

  13. Well, what to say, she is just interesting for me no matter what she sings, unless it is Burning Desire, that one is just, well, burning my ears :-) This is beautiful ! Her voice just pulses the emotion into your brain with so much sharpness, though it is so soft...
