[Watch] Glee Cover Mariah Carey And Nicki Minaj...Badly.

After watching a clip of what television show Glee did to Mariah Carey's I Still Believe and Nicki Minaj's Super Bass, I have no option but to conclude this was a joke that I, having not watched the entire episode, wasn't in on. Just listen to the arrangement on the Mariah song, if that wasn't hilarious enough they've thrown in Darren Criss' dancing to guarantee laughs aplenty. I mean, what other rational conclusion can a person come to after watching this? That it was supposed to be taken serious? Don't be silly!

If it wasn't enough that they butchered a Mariah Carey song (well technically it's Brenda K. Starr's song, but the Mariah version is the one mentioned on the Glee Wiki page), they didn't even have the decency to honour the Diva with a whole show for her material, like they did with Britney Spears and Madonna. The nerve!

As for Jane Lynch and her take on Nick Minaj: she can do whatever the high-C she wants and it'll be okay with me, but her on the bike was hilarious.

Watch at your own peril, people!

  2. The I Still Believe was terrible D: I wish they chose a better Mariah song too, like We Belong Together or Always Be My Baby. I thought Super Bass was hilarious though xD

  3. Superbass was funny. As forthat show Glee...I just don't get how anybody can stretch the suspension of disbelief far enough to watch those actors play highschool kids. But millions obviously having that ability also expains a lot about Taylor Swifts continued success.

  4. I have no patience for a) Darren Criss attempting to sing any big "diva" song or the producers of Glee saying he has a "diva" voice or b) that they picked one of the worst Mariah songs to cover. It was meant to be fairly humorous, in relation to the episode, but still.. I'm sort of glad they don't honour her with an entire episode because I'm really not ready for them to butcher that many songs.

Also, in agreeance with Opie Ever - some of those "high school kids" are now THIRTY. Like, they are over a decade away from their target age. Bizarre.

I have a sick, twisted relationship with the show where I watch every episode as soon as it comes out but hate every second of it. Maybe that's why I watch it? I keep hoping they're going to 'wow' me with an arrangement that me, or my friends and I, can cover but no luck.

  5. THANKS DD! This was such an atrocity, a terrible mockery of an amazing song. And you're right! They didn't give her a whole episode... or even a whole song! And they mixed it with Super Bass! Are they equating Mariah to Nicki?

I hope Mariah sues them for defiling her legacy.

  6. I wasn't aware that Glee even did covers well to begin with.

  7. Thanks for directing me to it :P

  8. This episode was essentially about feuds between the cast, and was full of mash ups of feuding singers e.g. madonna and elton, and here is Nicki and Mariah, hence the weird mash up. Sue (Jane Lynch) singing super bass is just pure genius.... but Blaine is just irritating

  9. It may not be Mariah at her greatest, but it had some AMAZING remixes [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJJzLLBVKb0] [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZSF3XpY-0Y] [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUr8ePyWQVg]. As for Darren Criss, he seems quite popular. So much so that the top comments on the actual Mariah vevo video are these:

    Scary!

  10. Thanks for clearing that up! I did think that the Nicki/Mariah thing might be a reference to the whole Idol feud, so it's good to have that confirmed.

  11. I can't fathom why they used I Still Believe as the Mariah song for the feud concept. Perhaps the guy who selects the song isn't very familiar with her body of work? No...that can't be it. Surely Obsessed or something would have worked better.

  12. Noticed that too, and call me petty, but it annoyed me immensely.

  13. Did anyone hear Darren Criss cover of Christina Aguilera's "Fighter" I really enjoyed that. I enjoyed Darren's attack on such a big song especially the arrangement was cool!

  14. Another song I personally felt he massacred.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That was horrible, my childhood memories of I Still Believe have been tainted LOL

  16. Jane Lynch is hilarious, and she has better moves than Nicki Minaj. I had to shut it off when the mash up came on though. No, just no.

    ReplyDelete
  17. they'll never have a mariah episode because lbr, none of those kids could sing mariah.

  18. Honestly, Darren's voice is very plain and boring to me, not a lot to be impressed about. I think the only reason he's so popular is because so many fans are obsessed with him, probably because he's so "brave" for playing a gay guy. Anyways, I thought it was just a horrible idea to have Darren do Mariah, or even Xtina last season. Jane obviously was supposed to be humorous, and honestly, she nailed it.

  19. I have not heard a song Glee has done yet, that hasn't essentially taken out all of the good in a song. Sure the vocals are always spot on and such, but it always sounds so metallic So empty. Plus the awkward arrangements that they have going on in the background. I also hate it when people refer to Glee songs as "Broadway" quality with its vocals. No sir. Broadway is technically perfect AND captures the emotion of a song. Those people essentially BECOME the music.

  20. I am genuinely glad to glance at this blog posts which contains
plenty of helpful information, thanks for providing these kinds of information.

  21. Mrs. Lynch brought it with super bass and I must say I was impressed with her rapping and her belts. Lol. As for Darren Chris.......and this is for all the males on glee. Get some interesting vocal character because I don't hear anything emotive or special about you all's voices. The only one that can showcase any type of emotion is the new boy who wants to be a girl....IMHO. I mean amber Riley is gone now so there is no dynamics to this show now. But I have been mildly impressed with Santana. Buy back to my point....I find all the male singers on this show to have generic voices.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's because all of their voices are not original! :p

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ditto! You can say that again, sistah! They just butchered it with no emotions, like How to be a Heartbreaker. Infuriating, really.

    ReplyDelete
  24. *Sigh* Glee doesn't do Darren Criss justice.
In the Starkid musicals his vocals were so much better.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't know. I'm very impressed with Chris Colfer. If he did this song, I'm not sure I would have had a problem with it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love that dude.... Just wish he would do more fifth octave belting...he has that ability to go all over the lower 5th octave...I know he can because I'm a much weightier tenor and still can do so.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Is that the Marina song they gave Brody? Haven't heard it, but heard OF it. Horrible things were said.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree. In spite of having really good singers (Lea, Amber and Naya on top of my head), none of them could never sing a Mariah song and give a decent performance. I mean, We Belong Together, Vision of Love, Emotions, Hero? Most of Mariah's top songs are only impossible to sing by anyone but Mariah. Those who try to sing these songs, usually in Singing Competitions such as American Idol or X-Factor, fail epically in delivering a decent performance.

  29. As much as I agree with the sentiment here, Broadway is anything but technically perfect...Bernadette Peters, Jennifer Holliday, Natasha Richardson (all Tony Award winning actresses for musical roles who all have less than perfect techniques... Damaging in Jennifer Holliday's case, tho she ties as my favorite singer, and almost non-existent in Natasha's case, tho her Sally Bowels tops Liza's any day...not to mention Carol Channing). It's about emoting yes and how to more accurately relay a character (tho perfect technique to accompany that is preferable lol...just not essential for solo showcasing).

  30. It is so horrible it made the angels and diamonds cry. He sang it with no emotions.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I liked "Unique" more. S/he has crazy ability belting. Chris Colfer is definitely also good, but there's just lack the the "kick" in his voice.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree. Though when I first saw Unique in the season premier, I though he was a woman. lol At first glance I thought he was Amber Riley but then I quickly realized he wasn't. His belting abilities though...upper 4th octave all the way to middle fifth octave....pretty decent.

    ReplyDelete
  33. He's a male version of Amber Riley imho. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  34. That just makes me want to go somewhere and practice my belting...On a good day I can shoot up to an E5.. Yesterday when i was just playfully mimicing gospel singers with my cousin, I shot up from Eb2-Eb5 in full mix.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've belted out G#5s before. I'd include an A5 but that was literal screaming. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I knew I should have recalled the statement later on. lol. I mean they need to be somewhat technical- because if you are literally a screaming banshee that has no musical talent- you wont make it far.

    ReplyDelete
  37. You are a very high tenor. I'm borderline dramatic at this point. I have a baritonal lower register (anything below e3) and I can ding s full c2 with plenty of resonance. In total, I can sing down to g#1. As for head voice which I rely on a deft mix of falsettone and head voice, I can shoot up to a5 on a good say, but I'm doing some weight tricks too get my head voice range back. My belting range is ridiculously strong. I can belt e5 possibly f5 if I do that structureless gospel style singing. But since I try to do every thing with perfect technique, I can go pass eb5. I can send you some clips if you don't mind.

  38. Yes, just heard it, and they destroyed it.

Also, they've just recently destroyed "Against all Odds"... Mr. Criss... once again. He needs to be fired

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think they never have a Mariah episode because those kids (audience) don't know who Mariah Carey is.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Actually, some do. In class, when I mentioned Mariah, one of the boys actually burst into "Touch My Body" in an attempt to belittle her.

    ReplyDelete
  41. guys, sue singing superbass was a joke, please. it was not meant to be taken seriously. it's just a way for her to say how she hates those kids and their idiot idols.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Who here is claiming otherwise???

    ReplyDelete
  43. Gleetards are always claiming that their faves exceed the original. I recall one comment in particular that praised the Glee version at Mariah's expense... and it had two thumbs up.

And it was on Mariah's video.

    ReplyDelete
  44. True. They also claim this Lea sang some Streisand songs better. Even claiming equally well is laughable.

    ReplyDelete
  45. So, the general consensus seems to be that these "gleeks" are either ignorant or deluded... or both.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lol I'm going with ignorant and stubborn. ( because even if you link them to the original they persist. And tbh not my impression they even follow those links)
Not sure how general the consensus is but there seems to be consensus between you and I alright.

    ReplyDelete
  47. If they did an episode featuring all Mariah songs I would actually watch this show!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yes the song is meant as a joke, and it's the character's intention to lose to Sue as revealed later in the episode, so he purposely gave a lackluster performance. Not that he would sing a Mariah Carey song terribly well anyway, but singing it well was definitely not the point with this one.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Found one song where Glee actually did a better job than the original, but it was a very low bar to vault, really. The Glee girls did Wannabee, by the Spice Girls. The vocals were more interesting than the original, in my opinion. A couple of other instances where I'd liked their version better than the original. Trying to remember that Alicia Keyes song they did. Alicia sounded like she was being forced to sing at gunpoint, in her version.

  50. I'm sorry I couldn't focus on the music with Darren Criss standing there and all the damn colors from Jane Lynch and her entourage!
