[Review] Florence + The Machine make Sweet Music On Great Gatsby Soundtrack

Wow, Florence Welch really lets her inner banshee loose on her Great Gatsby contribution, Over The Love. Okay, well strictly speaking the song is by Florence + The Machine, but still, it's that piercing voice that really steals the first half of this show. From the quiet and broody midrange that opens the song, to the effortless highs that punctuates the chorus, this is Ms.Welch doing what she does best: giving us drama and theatre, all with that stunning instrument of hers.

The "Machine" does get more vocal as the song progresses; building to a chaotic and breathtaking crescendo at the climax, as it joins its front woman up in the musical stratosphere. But it's a fleeting union, because as quickly as the two take up their embrace they drift apart, leaving us with only a choir of Florences to ease the comedown.

Hearing this beauty makes me sad for Florence + The Machine's upcoming break from music. They sure have earned it though, having been releasing and touring since their début in 2007! On the plus side, I'm seeing them at the end of the month at the Chime For Change Concert, so I'll be double sure to treasure and store that experience for those lean Florence-less months up ahead! God only knows how you guys are going to cope!!

  1. Heard the whole album. I think this is the best one.

  2. OMG, her birthday is a day before mine... Can anyone say team Virgo?!?!?! No? Ok... And this song is good. I like it. Her voice has cardinal-like peircing tone to it's belting register (no pun intended). And her head voice remimds me of a catbird with the soft, sweet tone. I have no idea, why I think of song birds when I hear her voice. With other singers, I think of instruments with sound traits similar to their voices, but birds came to mind for Mrs. Welch...

  7. I've been sleeping on Florence + The Machine, but this song made me want to check out their other music. I love this song and I agree with Ricky that it's the best song off of the Soundtrack thus far; however, it still doesn't capture the essence of the time period in which the film takes place.

I could have sworn I heard somewhere that Florence has actually began working on the new album.

  12. Incredible! Agreed that this is by far the strongest effort on the soundtrack, or that I have heard so far anyway! Her voice is an auditory miracle on this track!

  13. I love the way she translates her voice into pure emotion. Doesn't capture the 1920's but perhaps that's the intention.

If anyone's interested in the 1920's music, you should look for HBO's show Boardwalk Empire.

  14. All though it does not sound very 20's per-say, it just feels timeless so it still fits. By far the best song on the soundtrack, and if anyone has read the book I think they will appreciate the song more.
