[Friday Free For All]

Ok, I should be back home this weekend, so hopefully regular service should resume! But for now, here's the newly titled "Friday Free For All" [Credit and thanks to Joel]. So have at it! In addition to talking about whatever you want, please let me know of anything I've missed while I've been out in the wilderness these last two weeks! Now back to trash television for me...Cheaters, if you must know!!

As per usual, the rules:

  • Try not to get too perverted-this site still needs to basically be "safe for work".
  • If somebody starts a controversial subject, try keeping it civil when dealing with it. If things get out of hand please flag the conversation.
  • It would be nice if it stuck to music, but it's not a requirement! So talk about news, current events, how you're getting your hair done next time you hit the hairdresser! Whateves, really!
  • No nasty comments aimed at other users.
Inappropriate hugs to all y'all!

Can someone discuss the death of Electra Heart? I'm heart-broken.
On the other hand, GOSH I CAN'T WAIT FOR HER NEW SHTUFF TO COME OUT.

  2. Damn! Ricky beat me to it. Was going to make this first entry here a running with the theme " cheaters" and post this one. Anouk about her ex ( one presumes LOL)
This is the warming up for a radioshow. Going from a jam into the song...

Well, I did already mail DD about the whole archetypes project, and the links for the playlist and all 11 videos of it. Oh well. We just gotta wait now.

    ReplyDelete
  4. LOL Yes, I mailed the Anouk playlist link .
But what "archetypes project" are you talking about???

Also..didn't post this for DD's benefit tbh but for whoever reads it. ( and okay, I admit it. A little bit for those who think you need backtracks and loads of dancers to put on an entertaining performance ;-D )

  5. I got a question for you all (mostly for the Americans [don't know if British kids were subject to such horror] who are as old as I am). Do any of you remember having to play the tonette?

Yes, this disgusting plastic thing that plays a sound comparable to Britney's singing voice? I remember hating playing it, hating the sound of it... now Target is using it in their new back to school advertisements. Everytime I see/hear those commercials, I just cringe! Uggghhh!!!!

p.s. I'm glad to contribute any way I can, even if its just a title!

    ReplyDelete
  6. How do you post a video where it pops up right on the screen at not just a link? I see you all doing it and I'm jealous.

Anyway, I found this gem. This is really cool. Idina Menzel, the orginal green witch, without make up in an airport singing "I'm not that Girl", with her husband Taye Diggs beat boxing. Its pretty silly because of Taye and she's trying to be quiet while singing. She even forgets the lyrics at some point. How the??? I guess its been almost 10 years. Cool stuff.

  7. Holy wow! She's just warming up???

Anybody (and there's many of them) who says "Adele is the best singer ever." needs to listen to this.

    ReplyDelete
  8. LOL We in Holland used to play them when I was a kid in music class elementary school..Only a wooden version. And it was optional. I hated the sound of the wooden ones also.
But turns out, that's only because it was kids playing poorly.
Still...I think the penny (tin) whistle would have been a more fun option. One I might have gone for anyway.

But to cut a long story short..I feel your pain Joel! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  9. She's something isn't she?
Did you check out the other rendition as well? For those with more technical inclinations, I think it's probably even better. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Don't really know how you post the links but I just copy from the bar on top and paste( from youtube.)
But I see your link doesn't have the "WWW" and also has a dot in between tu and be.

  11. The sound quality is not as good though (someone's cell phone?). Studio mics are hard to beat.

So much soul in her voice. Some people hear the music and sing the music, the special ones FEEL the music. They're the ones that make you believe what they are singing and what makes them special. That's what I think.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Nope. Same result. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Strange. But I am far from a computer expert. Probably DD or Serendipity or BlackRobin or one of those can help locate the problem. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I totally agree ( yes btw probably cell phone) But the ones who like you say "FEEL" the music don't even really need studio mics to get that across....

    I mean...

  17. This is so beautiful! Ahh

    ReplyDelete
  18. LOL You can play "Opie" anytime Serendipity.

But this thread is shaping up to be Friday Free For All Anouk.
Not as catchy a title as Joel's...but it works for me. ;-)

Praise Jeebus. Jojo has finally sued to be released from her contract, and it seems like she has a strong case.
I'm smelling a music comeback that'll rival Mimi's own Emancipation era XD :P

  20. Yay selfies! I love it. Sounds like crap (because of the mic) but they still sound amazing. If you don't believe me, go ahead, find a crappy mic and sing in it. Play it back on your hi-fi headphones and cringe. haha

Here's a selfie from a lady I'm currently obsessed with:

  25. I'm all for this Friday Free For All's main dish being Anouk :)
I can't wait to finish my video for her, and then send a profile to DD ASAP :)

  26. WOW you just brought back SO many 5th grade memories lol. But we most definitely had these but we call them recorders over here (well at least I do) awful things they are!

AND speaking of Britney's singing voice I was JUST listening to this

"Britney" cover Beyonce's 'Grown Woman' https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=wjX5_JQMLdY

    ReplyDelete
  27. Just googled 'Tonette' and apparently the recorder is the newer version and the tonette is the old school version. They still look hidoues and from how you described it make about the same sound

    ReplyDelete
  28. I just want to share a beautiful cover from one of my favorite Divas.

All the 11 videos that she posted, part 1 to part 11, it's actually a project titled "The Archetypes". I have no idea why.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Archetypes can be seen as "perfect examples"

The project was called the Archetypes because it focuses on 4 central archetypes: Primadonna, Su-Barbie-a, Teen Idle, and Homewrecker.

"I based the project around character types commonly found in love stories, film and theatre, usually ones associated with power and control in love, as opposed to weakness or defeat [...] Rejection is a universally embarrassing topic and Electra Heart is my response to that. It is a frank album." In Marina's own words.

    ReplyDelete
  31. LOL Total miscommunication. You replied to a post about Anouk but were talking about Marina.
    Confusing!

But yeah, I had no idea about that project. I will have to check out all 11 videos. Love Marina! :-)
Not as much as Anouk but still ;-D

    ReplyDelete
  32. Can't wait either but it seems to be shaping up quicker than Alison's for sure. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  33. Loved that. Norah is great. Played her first album obsessively for months. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Fun fact about Norah Jones. I've actually worked with her first vocal coach and piano teacher. She told me Norah started out as a terrible singer.

    ReplyDelete
  35. LOL Well, everybody's gotta start somewhere. At least once she started recording , unlike some, she was no terrible singer any longer.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I got so obssessed about her I end up finding she has a half sister called Anoushka Shankar, who plays mostly tradicional indian music and Anoushka has recorded some music with Norah. That's what I call a talented family, because their father was like a living legend on India.

    ReplyDelete
  37. That's awesome because if she can do it, we can too be a great singer.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think it's time to share some non-english music! Here it goes an spanish classic sung by Marta Sanchez and Andrea Bocelli, it's pretty much like a spanish "The prayer", hope you like it! ^^ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_7Y3DNdkig

And here's another one, Sin Miedo A Nada, by Amaia Montero and Alex Ubago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d011M5N8dhw

    Thanks for the insight. :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Marta <3
I share quite a bit of spanish, german and russian music on here, glad to have someone else join in :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I wish this song was making more waves right now, 3 big spanish music artists all on one track but it is kind of being slept on :/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcJX4-yiFxI

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's always interesting seeing family in music.
Like Enrique and Julio Iglesias, Michael and Janet Jackson, Linda Davis and Hillary Scott (Lady Antebellum), and so on and so forth.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I know, I tried to find Anoushka's last year's album. heard some vids an sounds pretty good.
Ravi Shankar btw is a living legend all over the world.
One of the reasons being The Beatles liked him a lot. Hung around with him.

    ReplyDelete
  45. She definitely over sings in Dominoes. She doesn't over sing in Casualty of Love and Who We Are. She does weird things like staccato but I think that's just her bubbly personality shining through. Her lyrics are fine. No complaints here.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Has anyone heard Naya Rivera's single yet?

    I want to love it....

    But I'm a bit disappointed.

    https://soundcloud.com/ririspearslvr/naya-ft-big-sean-sorry

    ReplyDelete
  47. "A bit" is too weak to describe how dissappointed I am... I thought she would do something like Amy Whinehouse or Adele... just... total dissappointment...

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have to admit that I've never been really keen on any of these three singers, and the dance sound of the song doesn't help either ^^U but I'm glad that I can share some spanish songs here :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-IkeznAZQA This one here is the first song I ever heard in my life, I remember how much I liked it... I think it's time to recue some old song from the trunk :)

This song is so sad... she had so much potential... Can we please have a moment of silence?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yes! Even John Coltrane named his son after Ravi Shankar. He worked with great talents.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Jojo is massively underrated. I saw/heard her sing the national anthem (USA) live at a football game. She was Holy Wow! She must have been only 16 at the time. January 2005?

    ReplyDelete
  52. 2ne1 are .....FLAWLESS !.

    ReplyDelete
  53. iv been waiting on new music from this woman for years and im disappointed, sounds so generic :/. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7ZG6Ed1hmw

    ReplyDelete
  54. YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!... Dude...marriage...now!!! BOFL JK.

    ReplyDelete
  55. did you like the music video for the song ? one of my favourites. their so different from most of the big kpop groups.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I liked it all. 2NE1 never disappoints me. The MV was a unique concept by Korean standards. Generally K-pop vids are recorded in a colorful box with flashy outfits LOL. And GAWD, did you see CL's hair? She looked heavenly.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ricky Yong Chin Yuan11 August 2013 at 06:54

Sooooooooo, anyone heard the new Applause snippet? :D

    ReplyDelete
  58. I haven't! Yet, I've read Gaga's melodramatic response...lol.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh My...was not expecting that....

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm a bit scared to listen after reading all these comments.

    ReplyDelete
  61. LOL. I did not know this was a "thing", but just YouTubing the title brought up a whole load of others. How weird the world is!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Bout time I say. She's been handled awfully by them. I'll praise Jebus when she gets out of it successfully.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Can't say it rings a bell with me as a Brit.

    ReplyDelete
  64. EvilTroyandEvilAbed11 August 2013 at 14:17

Yeah. I feel like I'm celebrating a little prematurely but at least we know that she's being proactive now, and looking to get out the deal.

I have a good feeling, and just as a bystander the case looks strong. No doubt that she's paid her dues time and time again. Time for someone to treat her right.

    ReplyDelete
  65. It's not TERRIBLE, it's just disappointing. I was expecting to hear that lovely voice that stands out on Glee, but the song does nothing for it. And the song is kind of boring, I can't remember the tune even after listening to it a couple of times.

    ReplyDelete
  66. haha, what were you expecting ?

    ReplyDelete
  67. CL always brings it, they all fit so well as a group and are such a breath of fresh air from the cutie look most girls in kpop go for even though they look SICKENING alllllll the time. i was hopping their world tour would stop in the uk or even france as i would travel just to see them live.

    http://persephonemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/drag-race-sickening.gif

    ReplyDelete
  68. It came to New Jersey and California but since I'm in school and New Jersy is like 1100 miles away (1760 Kilometers) away, I had no way of getting their...Plus I have no money...BOL.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Is it just me or is this simply "Mama don't preach" ?
Not quite sure since I only listened to the actual song for a short while. After that melodramatic speech...music and lyrics would have had to be a lot stronger than they were if it was ever going to hold my attention.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I was wondering if anyone here has heard of Christina Bianco? She does fantastic impressions of divas, and she's usually on point.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3DlDPeurRw

    ReplyDelete
  71. ugh you know the sad thing is i agree with you and im a fan. dont get me started on the speech , it was a second rate gaga speech. id love to be able to link you some other work thats full of creative song writing and unique beats but since she's singed with redone there isnt much floating around and everything sounds the same, her old material is light industrial and has more creativity but that stuff dates back to 2007 so its abit out of date.

    ReplyDelete
  72. LOL Okay, I won't. But do feel free to post some links to "outdated" stuff you think is worth a listen.
You are talking to someone who will post Dean martin in 1959 after all. " 2007"? Psah! That's not out dated...that's yesterday. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm guessing that she just released that song to make it the catchy first song of the album so people get interested in it (Although, as you said, it's not too catchy either) and also that she wanted to do a song with her boyfriend. I still have hope, let's wait for the whole album.

    ReplyDelete
  74. haha dean is a classic though just like peggy lee or etta james, the great singers endure the others fade. here's a mix of old and new, the song writings nothing great but i really do enjoy the raw edge her voice has.

  75. Cheers! Promise I will check them out soon. But right now I am listening to the album which should have gotten the attention Gaga's and Perry's releases so undeservedly are getting. ;-)

I like voices with a bit of a raw edge. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Wow, that was so not what I expected from your description.
Music is really not my genre and frankly, the voice sounds heavily " worked electronically" so to speak.
When you said " raw edge" I was thinking this kind of voice LOL...
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2648xZNiNB4

    ReplyDelete
  78. haha i see what you were thinking maybe i should have used the word raspy instead of raw , the second and third songs were what i would listen to as an angsty teenager but now dont hold much interest.

i was surprised to hear you say you thought her voice was edited, i know in the first and second songs there was no editing but i think in the 3rd in 4th your right. i still stand by her being a good vocalist but there is no evidence without listening to an extensive catalogue of industrial songs and even i dont got time for that because as i said im no longer angsty hahaha lol,if i do find a good vocal display more to your tastes i shall post it in another free for all Friday

oh and as always thanks for taking the time to listen opie, the links above aint really the genre for me but different strokes for different folks and i like getting to hear different music :).

    ReplyDelete
  79. Oh I think "raspy" would still have pushed my mind in a different direction..Like Alannah Myles or something LOL

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DQ7AvCoWJo

I didn't mean the voice sounded like it was made electronically to sound a bit like it's coming through you through an old transistor radio. If you know what I mean?
But have to admit, usually I check out live vids of a singer to compare but I didn't really do that this time. My head was still with another singer tbh. ;-D

    ReplyDelete
  80. oh i see, id still say raspy. you know like the legend joan jett , im not comparing atoll but thats the closes kinda voice i can think of but as iv said until i can provide a decent audio ill leave it for now. but i did enjoy the video above :)

out of intrest opie have you heard of elle king,id say her voice voice was raw or maybe raspy. ?

  81. I myself would sooner use a word like hoarse(naturally ) or husky.
Aside from that..I seem to have seen her name come by somewhere but didn't know her.
That is a singer way more in my taste range I have to admit. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  82. i thought it would be more down your street, id suggest you put her on your list of artists to give a listen to :) and yes husky i like that haha :).

    ReplyDelete
  83. Already placed there indeed. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yes, love her dark sound

    ReplyDelete
  85. oh cool just had a little search on facebook and found the group, ill join when i get home :) thanks !.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Cool! I will let Stuey know. He's the admin.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I recently "discovered" this songs and went back to check all the discography. She is amazing, a great singer/songwritter.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Small fan, I like her voice but I'm not crazy about her.

    ReplyDelete
  89. hi everyone. i know country music isnt very popular on this blog which is understandable but while watching the CMA music fest last night i saw a performance i think might be something different from the usual discussion. Carrie Underwood opened the show with an awesome high energy performance of Guns n Roses famous rock hit "Paradise City." My husband who is a huge classic rock fan enjoyed it as well and it was trending on twitter for much of the following show. I know what you all usually talk about; vocal range, upper belts, ect... but for someone who never received any vocal training she sure puts many others in popular music to shame.

Check it out and enjoy the performance!!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nH5pJN1PXg

    ReplyDelete
  90. LOL from classic Rock passing as Country to actual Rock...neither a huge step for (wo)man nor Mankind.
I am not surprised your husband, as a fan of, I presume also Guns & Roses, would like this. So did I...was as near a perfect imitation as a woman can do of Axl.

Interesting to see today's fake "Country" stars are finally starting to shed the pretense. I hope Carrie's example will be followed by all the pretenders and they just move over to the Rock scene already and leave the Country scene to actual Country music.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Opie Ever, I can't get on Facebook anytime soon and couldn't find any other way to show you, so I'll have to settle for here. I have a new song to show you. Hopefully you'll like it but I'll understand if you don't. I didn't finish recording it, and haven't balanced the gain levels so some parts may be somewhat louder than others (like always) but with school in full swing, it'll be another 2 weeks before I get a chance to reach another checkpoint while recording. I also tried to take Sparkilu's advice with belting in moderation, but I think I didn't quite get it. LOL. Anyways, as for the lyrics... I kept the plot linear and to the point, trying to make it climactic but I didn't quite get finished...Did I sell the frantic nature I tried to write about? lol...

  93. Having enjoyed the fab Whoopi link shared on the fb page I just pondered who your favourite comedian diva's where? For me it has to be the legendary Joan Rivers, her caustic and flippant wit relates so much to my own sense of humour and she in my opinion is the matriarch of comedy from a female front.... Who do you guys appreciate on a comedic front? Here is a rather funny live gig she done a while back :)

  94. Also how do people feel about the videos that drop for the newest videos these days? I actually feel that they intend to polish upon what seems like mostly sonic turds...I long for the days of forward thinking and interesting views and artistic views without the often contrived messages! Here is one such beauty that seems to encapsulate the artistic and interesting in video form, ps I know this lady is not to everyones tastes but for me its timeless to this day! Let me know what you guys think :)

Woody Allen was very funny as a stand up.

Dara O' Briain is another one I really like.

But indeed Joan is always good for a couple of laughs.
