[Thoughts On] Natalia Kills

Is there anyone else out there on the site who is loving Natalia Kills' sophmore album, Trouble?  I've sat on the album- figuratively speaking- for the last week, but boy was I impressed when I got around to giving it a spin.

Up until now I've always been slightly weary of the British singer-songwriter, thinking she was going to be  a case of more style than substance. This being so, I wasn't expecting much when I forced myself to give the album a chance today. However, her style of brash and bolshy, electro-pop was just what the Doctor ordered! I'm slightly smitten.

I'm even tempted to go back and take a listen to her first album Perfectionist so enjoyable was the experience, but I'm scared I'll be disappointed. Maybe you guys can help me fill in the gaps of my non-existent knowledge on the Diva and why I should worship her like a packet of Monster Munch. Personal opinion is so much more fun than Wikipdia.

Drink that Kool-Aid, peeps!

Thoughts?

  1. Was JUST talking about this yesterday actually! I've known of her for some time now but never really gave her music the chance (shame on me!). I took a listen to this album and was actually really surprised, her voice sounds dramatically different from song to song. My favorite so far is 'Saturday Night'. I tried to liken her to another Diva in mainstream (just for reference) but really can't. If I had to I would say she's a mix between Rihanna and Marina and the Diamonds, but even that doesn't really do her justice

  2. ah ! major Natalia kills fan here dd :). i glad you posted this and even more glad you finally got to listen to the gem that is trouble !. perfectionist aint as good as trouble and lacked personality but was still a very good "pop" album, in fact its almost a blueprint of the perfect pop album with sad song , chart songs and club songs. the vocals on trouble were far superior and she is most comfortable vocal in country style songs it seems.

    here's a few gems to give a try :

kill my boyfriend was her transition song from perfectionist to trouoble

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-daPmzKLKNU

free has 2 versions , one with will.i.am and this...this is far better

broke is just full of feels

mirrors was the lead track, nice little number.

    another good attitude track

and to polish it off a nice little live.

  3. This girl is amazing ! I have been listening to her for like 2 years, i loved her first album and i love the second ! Wish she would get more attention in public and more fans so she could make a bigger tour, i would love to see her perform ! Also check out her series Love Kills, she has it on her VEVO acount, it is amazing !

  4. Hadn't heard her before but I am liking this. Will be checking out the whole album.

  5. So much to listen to !! I actually saw your post on the Friday free for all. Inspired me to listen to the album ;).

  6. I get the Marina and the Diamonds comparison- not so much the Rih one. I'm also getting some Lana- "Devil Don't Cry"- splashes of Gwen stefanni- "Rabbit Hole"- and tinges of Gaga- "Controversy" "Stop Me".But like you said, her voice is dramatically different on each song! Really loving her.

  7. I feel bad that I've slept on her talent for so long- it's been years! I've checked my computer and it seems I actually bought her first album when it came out. Just didn't listen to it- silly me. Oh well, I think this was probably the perfect time to discover her.

  8. SHADE!!!!!! lol I get you though. I wish there were more artists like this. It seems that while each album that they produce is different they maintain a constant theme? or feeling I should call it maybe that connects the music regardless of the subject matter.

  9. Ahh, gotcha! Thought you meant vocally !

  10. Lol. http://media.giphy.com/media/NhcmPmXRUUbAY/original.gif

  11. LOL caught me! But the shade was mostly at stans defending the unoriginality of certain artists by claiming it is not possibly to be unique anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hahahaha brilliant response!

  13. These hoes keep coming but they never get close to my Girl, mimi

    ReplyDelete
  14. I doubt she was trying.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Absolutely love her now I have to say, but then I have enjoyed her since the days of 'Verbalicious' lol and that was a while back :)

  16. I should hope not. Who wants more of this? I'd rather hear somebody who can still sing.

  17. Oh my God! The first lesson to become a Diva's HATER: be repetitiv. You're a hater. Ok! We all understand that, hoe.

Try to beat that, you and any of those hoes singers u love, could NEVER:

  18. LOL You are right, all the singers I love couldn't lip sync like that.
They of course also don't need to because they sound live better than this...way better

  19. I've been waiting for this post! I'm a huge fan of Natalia Kills actually, I liked a few songs on Perfectionist, but I agree that it was very calculated, and purposely created for attention and to make her the badass girl in the business. But I think her sophomore effort is a work of art, truly personal and raw, but still fun to listen to. The songs sound great on their own, but knowing that the album is autobiographical makes them so much more. And I think the happy electro-pop vibe sounds great for the album, I don't know, it just feels right, despite the dark themes.
More on her, she's said that every song on the album is completely based on real events. In fact the album is named "Trouble" because she always thought that trouble followed her wherever she went. She was born in a rich family until she was 11, when her dad was accused of being a criminal. I feel like that just adds so much more to her and this album.

  20. Something about that picture of Mariah makes this post more hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  21. LOL Might be that sweet smile following the shade thrown at her?

    ReplyDelete
  22. okay im not trying to start a fight here because i obviously know you are talking about gaga because you pick on her the most about originality

but how the hell are marina and natalia unique
im huge fans of both in fact ive seen natalia live before but they aren't unique nor original

how can they be inspired by artists and not be copycats but the second gaga is inspired or references past artists she is crucified for not coming up with something totally new

please explain it to me is it because gaga is so big that she cant reference anything from the past but marina and natalia can because they aren't mainstream???

again dont spew venomous words at me just tell me how its totally okay for marina and natalia to be inspired but not for gaga

  23. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jdogh4PKd1M

i love what she says at the end about comparisons because its so true
    its pop music
people here take it too seriously

ive always loved natalia and ive been a fan for almost two years now
i saw her live once and shes not the best vocalist but she sure isnt a bad one either
i also love her attitude toward pop and i like that shes not afraid to piss people off
i enjoyed perfectionist thoroughly - i mean theres a lot of filler on that album and i dont know if people will appreciate her debut as much as this sophomore album but it doesnt hurt to see how she started

im excited for her and i hope she continues to gain more popularity because its been a long time coming

i love "If I were god" on her debut and i absolutely love stop me on this album

    ReplyDelete
  24. oh and you guys need to listen to free its a really fun song you can listen to when you're at the mall with your friends but you are broke as hell

    ReplyDelete
  25. You are doing a fine job "not picking a fight".
Wonder what it looks like when you ARE picking a fight???
I explained again and again there is a difference between copying and being inspired by. I have come to the conclusion it is a difference obviously beyond the grasp of understanding for Gaga stans.
"inspired" is when you hear something and it leads you on a path ending in something nobody but you would have come up with.
Copying is if you hear something and just make a tiny change and then reproduce it.

Aside from that, when I made that comment I wasn't thinking about Gaga but about you Jeremiah. You are the one who most recently tried to argue that Gaga is unoriginal because it is impossible to be original in 2013.

I don't think I ever heard Gaga herself make such a silly claim actually. Just her (and other unoriginal artists) stans.say that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. LOL Okay..I just realized just how young you are. No wonder.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Chronologically perhaps but otherwise...not so much I'd say. But i fear he actually could be even as much as two years younger chronologically as well. I experience much the same inclination. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wonder, is she a mezzo ?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm glad to hear that i didn't imagine the calculated nature of her first album. Might spend a little more time with "Trouble" before I venture on to it. Thanks for the mini bio too!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think it's right about people taking pop music too seriously. But it's hard to not do so when some of the biggest Pop artists out there- Gaga ect- are trying to tell us their (pop) music IS serious. But I'm glad to know where she stands on the issue.

  31. Released back in 2005, which is scary! Almost as much as the still from the video :|

  32. I don't know. I guess I just miss this Miley and I will never believe that it isn't the real her http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaYCWi3BFVM

  33. I am a member of the "Miley" generation (and I cringe even calling it that, but it is relevant to my argument) and I am often appalled at how young stars put their bodies and sexuality on display in an attempt to gain publicity. I am not an easily shocked person and I believe that everyone should have the freedom to express whatever it is they want to put out there; that being said, there is a difference in expressing your sexuality and just being plain old trash. The reason we still talk about performers like Celine is because they built their careers around their vocals, their stage shows, and their song choices. These are all things that they are still capable of supplying years and even decades into their careers. Hard work and genuine talent withstand the test of time. Once the shock factor of stars who build a reputation around dirty lyrics, revealing costumes, and generally ridiculous antics wears off, they are left with nothing to rejuvenate their careers. I think Celine was simply trying to voice her opinion on that matter and young stars would be wise to listen to the more experienced diva. If stars like Miley cannot generate album sales on talent alone, they need to find another career. (And keep their tongues in their mouth. That's how five-year-olds rebel, not adults.)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think listening to Trouble really got me more into Perfectionist, just because it made me like Natalia more I guess. I think it takes a really good album to appreciate the rest of the artist's repertoire.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Kill My Boyfriend is perfection. <3

    ReplyDelete
  36. Actually to me it does sound like you are easily shocked.

It's quite sad to see you and others criticizing Miley speak about the divas of yore who didn't need to "shock", yet conveniently are forgetting about people like Madonna and Bowie and such. Who's careers managed to also last many years yet early on got so much of the same criticism Miley and such are getting today.
You guys seem to suffer from a condition called "selective memory"

  37. lip sycincing your ass. The woman is delivering every heart beat to the song. Now more than anything I know you've become a HATER lol So sad! The low a human being can get. Hoe

    ReplyDelete
  38. I liked it too. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nope, lyric soprano.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love Controversy. In fact I love any song that tackles real world issues with an inteligent delivery. The part when she screamed don't drink the coolaid made me literally want to ask what was in my coolaid even though the feeling was out of context. IDK...That song just made me feel some type of way.

    ReplyDelete
  41. your wish - not truth. How come could I offer any kind of sex when I'm on the other side of the ocean? Think, hoe.

  42. "Flag", get yourself together. Please.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's possible for some celebrities I guess. But Miley seems confident about it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. ROFL And still...much as I reach down I can't get even close to you.

    Yes baby..she is lipsyncing.

If she wouldn't she'd sound like this
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gae1rI9Ebgo

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh I'm quite together. No need to beg. You're still dumb though. I'd suggest you get yourself together before you recommend I do.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't know your ways man.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Of course it's possible but reading and seeing interviews, I just see no indication it's the case for Miley.

    ReplyDelete
  48. She sounds so thin in her highs, are you sure ?

    ReplyDelete
  49. No one sounds thin if they sing with proper mixing and supporting (her timbre must be taken into consideration as well). She was singing rather chesty when she gets up their. I can hear nasal constriction at times as she ascended (which could be an artistic choice) Plus she was very bright up there even when "thinned out". Also, considering how she carries herself on those few lows, they sound supported but lack resonance.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You colected videos where Mariah's voice wasn't good at that particular day, and you think that's how she sounds today. There's no more conversation with you. U became a hater. Bye! Bye!

    ReplyDelete
  51. promises promises promises! But I think we have already established you are very far from being a manchild of your word Luis.
And no you silly boy...it's the fact that she rarely sings live and when she does it either sounds not "world best" at all or is a compilation of several efforts (and thus not really live either) but when she does sing live...she sound nowhere near "world best" as I demonstrated by posting videos of singers who all sound way better live than Mariah does these days.
And no just because she can produce a whistled note once in a blue moon does not make someone "best singer" in the world.

The video examples of how Mariah sounds these days on the rare occasion she actually sings a full song live, I did not so much collect but recently was made aware of by others. I am sure if I would put an actual effort in and struggled through the countless lipped and partly lipped and compiled efforts ..I could find more examples than just those two of how Mariah actually sounds today. But frankly..I don't care enough.
I wouldn't even bother at all if it wasn't for your pathetic posts calling every singer but Mariah names and making false claims about Mariah.

I would actually have preferred not knowing and like you, continue to live in a pretty illusion regarding Mariah's abilities.
But unfortunately it is entirely thanks to your foul mouthed stanning that I discovered the reality of her present abilities.

I became not a hater but a realist. And it is all fully thanks to you Luis. Take the credit hon!

Whereas Mariahs achievements are not, in spite of you thinking to the contrary, this achievement...all yours and yours alone! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. the weight and timbre feel like a lyric mezzo to me.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I honestly think that if Miley didn't do these stunts, no one would care about her music. Its sad but true, this is the hole that as women we are trying to get out of.

I think what Celine is trying to get at is whether these
young women are aware that they are being exploited by the teams around them.
What separated Miley's performance from a stripper? Both use their scantily clad bodies as
sources of entertainment. The only thing that separated her “Blurred lines”
performance was she did not leave with a wad of cash at the end. Robin Thicke
played the role of spectator and he got to keep all of his clothes on. The
media didn’t even make mention of the fact that he was just as responsible, if
not more than Miley. So here you have it, the depressingly male overtones of
our society. Young woman of a certain age tend to use sexuality as a means to
distance themselves from their childhood. When in an industry like the music
business, it is easy to lose sight where self-discovery turns into
exploitation. I also think that some of these women don’t understand what they
are actually doing. Woman have fought for years to be taken seriously and not
be reduced to objects. Yet young women like Miley voluntarily objectifiy
themselves without any other real purpose other than stiring the pot. I have no
problem with woman prancing around naked, but at least have a purpose. Sorry
but I’m young is just not good enough. All Miley sees is that she is being
provocative and expressing her youth. I’m sure she does not factor in how this
affects young girls who see her as a role model or how she is voluntarily
objectifying herself for profit. Maybe she will look back in regret or maybe
not, honestly who cares. She has millions of dollars at her disposal that she
can use on a therapist if she really feels the need. More importantly people
like Miley bring to light the need for better role models. Celebrities are not
the only people to use as role models. Encouge children to look to those around
you and women who have contributed to society in ways that do not involve
taking their clothes off. Anybody can take their clothes off.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I had no idea either...now I just got the raw inclination to say AWEEEEEE! Even though he and I may be the same age. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  55. People really ought to read and watch some interviews before the make judgements if you ask me. "identity crisis" LOL

    ReplyDelete
  56. glad i inspired you :) happy listening. !

    ReplyDelete
  57. Mariah is a sexy woman and she's proud to live and show her sexiness , not her sexuality. Miley went too far. Her recent videos are the worst. Everybody knows what she's been doing in the room, she doesn't need to show us.
Even Celine has shown some skin on photo shoots, there's no problem with that. Your comment counts less than a cent here. That's not the post for you. Wait for the next.

    hahahahahahahahahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  58. lol I only mention Rihanna for the simple fact that Natalia's lyrics can be more explicit and raw(much like Ri's). More so than most of the mainstream Divas

    ReplyDelete
  59. LOL One day maybe you will also get to really checking out Anouk's work.

(sorry, now that you set me up as the most vocal Anouk promoter..I had to throw that one in. ;-D )

    ReplyDelete
  60. I also get the Marina comparison.
Mostly in that she seems to move in the same genre and also to have a personality with something to say. As well as being inspired by similar artists. They each have their own uniqueness though.
Which just goes to show..it can still be done in today's pop music..be inspired rather than copy and be an interesting Artist with a capital "A".

    ReplyDelete
  61. Well she's been here for a few years already.

    ReplyDelete
  62. haha that is an interesting list :)

  65. As you pointed out, yes, I meant the opposite :D

    ReplyDelete
  66. Well, time has proven Miley has some sort of a talent. I accept that now. But is it the case for every other singer out there using nudity to sell ? Not that I care much for female nudity (lol). Sexual liberation is a great thing, but I have a feeling these girls trying to prove how liberated they are only end up being objects all over again. Not all of them, of course. I understand where Céline is coming from tho. She has shown time and time again her point of you is one of a mother above all, who doesn't want her kids to be hurt by the values promoted by modern society. No one can argue she has a point.

I also think one must realize controversy and sexual exposure are not necessarely the same thing. The latter can serve a purpose, but not always.

Lastly, Céline comes from a generation of singers who made it with their talent (yes, Madonna's controversies are a talent) and not because of their flat stomach / big chest / futon lips...

    ReplyDelete
  67. oh, you're so repetitiv. Get yourself together, hoe. Mariah is the best right now. Drop dead.

    http://www.youtube.com/v/cVdScSQti54&hl=en_US&fs=1&

    ReplyDelete
  68. All I have to say is that Celine can say what she wants about who in the industry. She is known exclusively for her vocal ability and talents, that is what has made her the superstar she is - all done without the need of resorting to sex to sell.

Whilst I agree with the other commenters that Miley does indeed have the talent and does not need to resort to this kind of behaviour she is running the treadmill that is already worn out by Rihanna and the likes, which is sad considering the latter has zero talent and needs to rely on such things :|
