[Album discussion] Lady Gaga Should Totally Have Recorded Miley Cyrus's "Someone Else"

The title pretty much says it all, but I'll elaborate a little. Nesting in the bowels of Miley Cyrus's Bangerz is one of my favourite songs off of the album: Someone Else.

The feisty break-up song, produced by Mike Made It, is ably handled by Cyrus- so I'm not trying to be shady by suggesting Lady Gaga should have sung it. In fact, the track houses one of the best vocals on the album; showing how diverse Miley's voice can be as it constantly morphs and changes as the track progresses. However, I can't help but hear the Gagster when listening to it.

It's not just the solid belts, or the similarities when Miley softens her voice that bring Gaga to mind, the the thumping production also harks to Born This Way. Obviously it's not going to be recorded by Gaga now, but  this is totally the direction I was hoping album number three, Artpop, was going to be taking. (Her live set at the Roundhouse shows this isn't going to be the case)

Aside from this excuse to show the track some love, let me end this post by asking you guys- who have heard the album- what you think about Bangerz! Let me know in the comments!

  2. I am surprised there isn't an album review yet.
This is one of the tracks I like but not THE favorite. And fortunately I am not hampered by Gaga sightings, or rather "hearings". Though I fear now I will be. Brrrrr

As for the album..I am loving the whole album but my favorites are 4 X 4 and FU
Generally I love the humor in the music itself. In spite of this to me sounding like a break-up album.
I think Miley sounds great. Contrary to many pop stars she has that what I call "Country" thing in her voice. I believe what she sings. It reminds me of a description Alison Krauss once gave about singers. Something along the lines of liking singers who sound like they just dropped by and are telling you what's going on in their life. Miley totally has that for me.

The songs are pretty good. To my surprise as I expected to be getting an album full of the beat of "Someone Else". And much to my relief tbh since such albums give me a pounding headache right quick.
This album has in fact and thankfully a pretty good variation going from song to song.
Which is one of the reasons I am thoroughly impressed as well. Most albums usually each song pretty much sounds like the next.

In my opinion Miley managed to totally show up all haters and critics by delivering a truly excellent album. Yay Miley! You Go Girl!!!

  3. TBH I don't hear Gaga much.

On the other hand, Miley sounds really good! Honestly, I wasn't expecting much.

  4. I love the album and this song. But I don't think Gags should have sung it.

  5. Bangerz is one of the best albums of the year in my opinion. I stopped reading many reviews because it felt as if some critics refused to like the album because of some beef they have with Miley's image. Others got it and gave it very positive reviews. It's clear Miley doesn't take herself too seriously and she's having a great time. Like Opie said, many of the lyrics were hilarious (and intentionally so). This album was rolling in attitude and independence. Miley's voice is so versatile and she's taking on this Madonna-esque personality where her next album may sound completely different. The vocals were awesome on this and she's defining a "Miley style". This album has some real staying power once people warm up to it.

  6. The album has so many genres it's weird. Some R&B, some country, some pop, some rap...I don't know, it's like a hoshpot of music. But I like this song, especially when she starts belting at 1:02. Probably my favorite part -- hopefully an album review will come soon.

She sings acapella with the Roots. Actually pretty good.

  7. Ok, I'm finding it hard not to get a bit butthurt over this. LOL. Listening to Miley and Gaga, I can say definitely that Miley has the more dexterous and malleable upper chest and this song relies on the phrasing at a high key to deliver its emotive quality. All and all, Miley's phrasing made me melt like hot butter on a cast iron skillet. IDK if Gaga could pull this song off despite the melodic similarities. Miley is also brighter and more girly sounding than Gaga which is something else I think this song needs. And even though I'm a far bigger fan of Gaga than I am of Miley Cyrus, I wouldn't like this song at all if it was from Gaga... I honestly don't think it suits her.

I like Miley's tone on her upper fourth octave lower fifth octave belting. It has a very bright violin like quality. With some practice and more precise vocal training this girl could be a great vocalist in the future.

And this album is amaze balls...

  8. I love Bangerz. Seriously fantastic. My favourites are FU and 4x4. I love #GETITRIGHT as well. SMS (Bangerz) is fantastic but I actually don't like Britney's inclusion on it. And Love Money Party is one of my favourite vocals. The high belt harmony in the second chorus is incredible.

  9. I definitely don't hear a lot of Gaga on Someone Else, lyrically and vocally it doesn't sound a lot like her at all. But overall I love this album, the songs were average to me at first, but by the second listen I was absolutely hooked. Standouts include #GETITRIGHT, Someone Else, and Do My Thang. Before releasing it Miley said she wishes she could erase all of Hannah Montana and her previous albums (although she's thankful of where it got her), and that she could release Bangerz as her first album. And hearing the album actually reflects that a lot, not because it's so different from her usual stuff, but she sounds like a new artist just making her impact on the charts, everything sounds really fresh and new, sometimes experimental to her sound, it's a hot mess without the real mess part. Black Robin basically said it all, this album is amazeballs.

  10. To be clear Emmy, though you are right it is in the lyrics as well, I meant the music itself.
I love the humor shown in FU with it's old fashioned torch song start to end up where it does. I think that harmonica in 4 X 4 is a really funny touch.
It's true many songs on this album mix several genres (which is going to put some people off) and I think it is done from solid knowledge and by a humorous mind.
I have no idea who it was but I am hoping that was Miley herself.(the song selection for those backyard sessions indicates she could possibly be.) I anyway suspect she at least recognized that humor and approved of it.

  11. still not liking the song but Bangerz is amazing with its catchy tunes and i love the lyrics. i think that this is a huge step up for her, i mean she has been gone in the music for quite some time then got back with a BANG and her last album "can't be tamed" was very generic. i don't think that i told everyone about this but im very fond of miley. i actually have all her album, except for bangerz cause it's still unavailable but i i'll probably grab it when it's available

  12. I don't know what you mean by Bangerz still being unavailable when it's been out for almost a week now.

  13. I can't see any resemblance to Gaga either. It didn't take me long to buy Bangerz on Itunes after I read all these comments praising that album and I really have to agree, this album truly is "amaze balls". there was no song I found boring and I loved how we got introduced with a slow, somehow soft trance-like song instead of a explosive, upbeat track. Bangerz is very versatile and I think that's one of the major factors that make this album so brilliant. My favourite tracks on Miley Cyrus' third studio album are 'FU'and 'On My Own'.

P.S. Here's what I found as I was searching for Miley's single 'On My Own', Youtube led me to a broadway number sung by Miley instead... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHq1HBaA1vs

  14. it's unavailable in my country. i just checked the music store near my place awhile ago and the staff said that they'll probably have it in 2 days so im excited

I honestly don't find much to praise in the album. It's definitely less generic than Can't Be Tamed. Favorite off the album- still Wrecking Ball.

  16. Hey josh, have you heard the album? Any songs off of it floating your boat (if you have heard it)?

    ReplyDelete
  17. It is a surprisingly solid collection of songs! I need to give it a few more whirls before I really make up mind, but I seem to like everything Mike Will Made It produces- bar the rap stuff- so it's perhaps no shock that I enjoyed the album as much as i did on first listen! I agree with @Josh Sensei that at points her voice is a little on the shrill side on some songs, but it's definitely more versatile than I thought.

As for the lack of review, I am LAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZY! But that should come as a surprise to no one by now!

  18. It's clearly all in my mind! Lol

  19. I loved Britney on that song! It was the first time in ages she hasn't sounded like a nasal robot!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I haven't heard much of her old staff, bar The Climb- which is a guilty pleasure of mine. So to me, and I think most outside the states, this is the first introduction to her.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I experienced no "shrillness" but then again, I hardly knew any of her older stuff other than those backyard sessions and the Dylan cover. I therefor had no expectations on anything other than presuming it would be one of those pop efforts which give me a head ache. I think the shrillness factor, much like nasal factor is very depended, often, on expectations. As to the level one can stand I mean.
Came as a total surprise to me how much I actually like this album. :-)

  22. =_= I'm spotting Mariah references where they probably don't exist.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Funny you say this Luiz. After all, isn't Mariah the one who tweets pics of her (aged) breasts?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Revamp her profile, DD PLZ!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've been reluctant to check out Bangerz because critics were trashing it, but I'm liking this song. The beat goes hard, and her vocals are good.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Luiz is a troll, stop feeding him. Dislike his comment and move on IMO. Replying to him (especially about mariah) is what he wants.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That mentality doesn't work. As a high-schooller, I can attest to that.

    ReplyDelete
  28. miley is definitely a capable vocalist and the haters are definitely just bothered with her image

as far as the gaga comment, i dont hear it at all

the thing with miley is that her studio versions this era have been pretty great but she sometimes falters when she sings her songs live

the only bad thing about her current behavior is no one will appreciate her work because its overshadowed by her VMAS stint and people are too ignorant to check out her new stuff

shes having fun and honestly just let the girl do her

  29. I was about to ask if you guys have Hannah Montana across the pond, but then I realized you're all grown ass people who probably wouldn't even watch the show even if you could haha.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hahaha For me anyway so very true MikeyPop. But I do think it was on the Disney channel here in Holland alright.

  31. Upon further listening of Bangerz, I think if there WAS a song that Gaga would record on this album, it would be FU.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh please, that would have been horrible! Hate her voice and on that song it would have been particularly horrid.
I wish you guys would stop already. You are going to ruin my fun here..linking this excellent album and my favorite songs to Gaga.
Face it Gaga fans...Miley delivered. And Gaga's latest effort next to it sounds even weaker than it did prior to Bangerz dropping.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bitch, please. If you have anything to say to Mariah, call her and tell her yourself. Attacking her is far from attacking me. Learn the lesson.

    ReplyDelete
  34. hhoe, please. Bow down.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I have to agree with you tho. Out of all these pop divas releasing new material this year, I'm actually least excited for Gaga. I had hope, but then Applause came out. And I'm just not feeling Aura that after a few spins. And the new snippet of G.U.Y. is just not working. A lukewarm album is all I'm expecting from Gaga now, I'm actually more excited for Katy Perry.

    ReplyDelete
  36. With you until the Katy Perry interest. You lost me there LOL

    ReplyDelete
  37. Lol. At first Roar generated the same excitement as Applause, but you can deny that it's a lot catchier and more fun to sing. But she released promotional single Dark Horse with it's grimy trap influences and I was hooked. It's actually really really great and a whole different sound for her.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I find it easy to deny everything about Roar. I haven't heard it,well no more than a minute or so. Just long enough to feel...not interested. But you have to remember, chart pop is not really my taste. This is why it comes a such a surprise to me how much I am loving Miley's album.

Gaga I think is going to fall completely by the way side next to Miley and Katey and now Lorde

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree. Applause is not doing well at all and I think the Rabid Monsters are the only people giving Gaga any relevance right now. The only song that has really stuck with me from ARTPOP, was I Wanna Be With You, a nice ballad that she performed at the iTunes Festival, but she announced that she edited the song and now it's called "Dope" and I kinda lost hope.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Haha! She still sounds like Robotney to me. I'm sick of Britney just talking her way through songs. Give me some bloody singing, again, Brit.

    ReplyDelete
  41. okay okay i just bought Bangerz and wow! totally amazing it was very diverse!!! probably Miley's greatest album. all the tracks got a lot of spice in them and it's very relatable. i love Do My Thang so much t's so fun and of course the other tracks too. i really commend Miley here, i thought it will be generic but i was wrong!!!! buy Bangerz it is really worth your money and ears. Still wondering when will DD give it a proper review i think this is deserving and an overhaul to Miley's vocal profile.

  42. Fantastic yodeller and her matching that guitar is just off the hook!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Her other post-Hannah Montana album would make you think she'll be like a Haley Williams

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think Britney was better than Miley in that song :P

    ReplyDelete
  45. Who is the best singer of a generation always has a subjective component but there is no doubt that in 100 years Jewel will be part of that conversation. Her technical ability is on par with Celine Dion and yet she manages an emotional expression that Celine lacks. Celine would never stoop to riffing with a guitar like Jewel does. Jewel does not get the appreciation of other singers because she prefers the cows on her ranch to the glitz of Hollywood but when she does appear in public and starts to sing she is capable of mesmerizing in ways that no one singer can. She is the one singer alive today where the phrase "vocal pyrotechnics" is apt. She doesn't have the largest range and sometime she comes up with odd off-color tones but for sheer vocal showmanship there is no equal.
