[Free For All Friday]

I could really do with a Hallmark/Lifetime movie and a cup of tea right about now. Not long to wait, though! One starts at 3 on Channel 5!  Let me give you guys the synopsis *checks TV guide*:

"A criminology professor is suspicious when a colleague appears to have died from a heart attack, and teams up with a private detective to uncover the truth - and they discover the dead man had a number of enemies and harbored many secrets. The second in the series of murder mysteries, starring Dick and Barry Van Dyke alongside Kimberly Quinn and Jonathan Banks".

Not really what I had in mind, but I suppose I can pretend it's a feature length episode of Diagnosis Murder. I also need to pick up my car from a cousin's house...but I guess that can wait. The banality of (my) life..(!)

If you don't know the score, here be the rules:
  • Try not to get too perverted-this site still needs to basically be "safe for work".
  • If somebody starts a controversial subject, try keeping it civil when dealing with it. If things get out of hand please flag the conversation.
  • It would be nice if it stuck to music, but it's not a requirement! So talk about news, current events, how you're getting your hair done next time you hit the hairdresser! Whateves, really!
  • No nasty comments aimed at other users.
Inappropriate hugs to all y'all, and wishing you an awesome weekend!

  1. A parting gift... A tease from her new album which has yet to be released.... I really like this song....

  2. 1) Regina Belle & Peabo Bryson: A Whole New World (Aladdin)

    2) Elton John: Can You Feel The Love Tonight (The Lion King)

Both songs are, absolutely, incredible: Soulful, Elegant & Charming. I truly do miss 1990's- Disney, although I did think 'The Princess & The Frog and Tangled' were wonderfully made 'modern' Disney films.

  3. Yep, proud to say... I called it some 5 years ago! Here's Sarah Jarosz in her television debut on national (US) television. probably due to after receiving 1 Grammy nomination for her first album, her third got two nominations for this years Grammies. Go Sarah!

  4. My biggest issue with the newest Disney films are the turn in animation towards primarily computer generated visuals. Im just a sucker for traditional hand drawn animation. Its much more aesthetically pleasing to me. The current music is "ehh". Tangled's soundtrack was forgetable to me and Frozens was alright. I'm not the biggest fan of broadway scores.

One of her best musical interpretations, ever. If you've yet to hear her this, you must listen to it NOW. It will change your life haha! She transcended even phenomenal itself. Such an extraordinary vocalist. Her voice is other worldly. This is how it's supposed to be done :D

  23. Never forgot the first time I watched that video. It was the first time I truly recognized Beyonce as a true vocalist and musician. That tour saw some of Beyonce's BEST vocal moments and musical interpretations. Her skill should never be denied. I personally never clung to her voice as I found it was very common place, but I acknowledge that her skill is exceptional. In fact, her calibre is the only reason I'm not completely dismayed by her. Her technical skills by far have her competitors beat by miles. I love Jennifer Hudson, phenomenal voice, but the better 'singer' is Beyonce, and not by a little, by MILES. She is such a talented woman. She uses her voice as an Instrument. She most certainly isn't a one trick pony. Not a fan of the voice, but a fan I most definitely am when it comes to her artistry.

  25. I'm truly a brick wall in that almost nothing gets to me, and as emotional as movies/songs can get, they aren't enough to conjure any emotional feeling. However, if there is one song that's able to extract even the slightest of emotion, it's Colours of The Wind. That is by far the most powerful song I've heard in my entire life. Disney truly outdid themselves with this song. I don't think any Disney song parallels this. This is a song that makes even the heavens cry.

Another one of my favourite Disney Songs is this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUfUYbhakCY

This is back when Disney movies actually had something to TEACH you. Back then, the songs had depth and meaning. They opened you up to be versatile. Pixel Perfect is a true Disney movie. I really do miss the Old Disney.

  26. The one at The Grammy's was UNBELIEVABLE. She was in a league of her own! I remember when I used to think Mariah Carey was just some awful singer. It really made me wonder why people said she was the best because I thought she was an awful singer. Then, I discovered she'd been around for a while. I began watcher her older material and I was floored! The Grammy performance of If It's Over is what forced to accept her as one of the best singers in existence, ever. She showcased every aspect vocally. Lower register, mid, high, whistle, melisma, excellent dynamics. EVERYTHING. She is a virtuoso by every standard of the word. One of my favourite performances of hers is this one:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OldqUCMaKUk

I've never heard another voice like Mariah's. When people have the audacity to say that Ariana sounds like Mariah, I feel insulted almost lol There's no comparison there, ever. Mariah couldn't just hit the high notes, she could hit the low ones, the really low ones. She had a secure mid register that could give a Mezzos a run for their money. She's superbly skilled. She has BOTH the Skill and The Voice. Young Mariah was ridiculous!

    ReplyDelete
  27. This woman's voice is top tier, I think. There are those whose flaws are disdainful (technically) which makes them unacceptable, especially due to the fact that their voices aren't really all that great. However, this woman as I've always said is an exception because her voice is out of this world. Much like Whitney/Mariah, Regine's voice exceeds even the highest of high. Her voice by far transcends her flaws:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqO9Dy9Jx6g

This is 45 seconds of AWESOMENESS! I could care less about what people say or think. I for one think she has one of the best voices in the world. If there was a top 5, Regine most DEFINITELY is in it!

  28. Bob Marley: One of the World's "Greatest" Singer-Songwriters ever. What an inspiration this man was and still is, especially to me - personally. I always shed a tear whenever I listen to this song. He is truly missed; ICON. LEGEND. ETERNAL.

  29. In my opinion, he's one of the best musicians to ever come out along with Prince. And Prince was BRILLIANT. There aren't more than 5 people I can think of that either supplant or parallel him. Amongst the very few that can do that is Mr Marley. His writing could stop an apocalypse if you ask me =D

    ReplyDelete
  30. YES. YES. YES. Prince is a Genius and Innovator in his own right also; an awe-inspiring artist, musician, producer, songwriter & multi-instrumentalist. How many artists do you know of that could say they were pioneers of their own Genre of music? - "The Minneapolis Sound" that inspired/influenced Sheila. E, Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson/Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis etc. in the 1980's.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well, first and foremost, Bob was a musician and instrumentalist, though primarily a 'songwriter' and many [not all] singer-songwriters are, more or less, renowned for their songwriting & musicianship skills/abilities as opposed to their voices; Bob Dylan & Carlos Santana are renowned examples. I, as a gargantuan fan, know that Bob was never a singer nor a vocalist - and he said so himself - but he did have a very unique way in connecting with the songs in which he wrote (especially from an emotional perspective) and he always delivered them with the utmost honesty and tenacity. Also, he was a Reggae- based artist and Reggae music [True Reggae music] has always been about the MUSIC as opposed to the voice or anything else. However, all in all, you're not the first person I've heard make a statement like that, so...

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm in love with Tori. She actually is one of my female celeb crushes now lol I'm confused why Ari was singing the lower harmonies at one part though. I also wanted Tori to bust out one of those super slick vocal runs.

Anyways, it was just bliss. Pure bliss.

  38. I don't know what it is, but this is probably Demi's best performance of this song, especially with that E5 @ 2:26 and the G5 @ 2:37. It lost it's raspy tone...weirdly enough, I loved it more than her usual E5 belts
I should note as well that she's singer straighter notes which is a PLUS. She should give up the vibrato while she perfects it.

  42. That E5 was very un-Demi-like. It was hollow and heady sounding, especially for a chest dominant singer. However, I noticed shes actually regaining her powerful midbelts. Thank god. She may be a Soprano but she is no upper belter, ever. As for this being her best live version of the song, I dont agree. The ones on Idol and the Del Mar concert were her best, I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I just think Mariah was a better vocalist, much better. She did things that other people couldn't, even Whitney.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Well, I love them both (though I prefer W.H as a "singer") but...

    Overall Range: M.C
    Whistle Register/Falsetto: M.C
    Head Voice/Super- Head Voice: W.H
    Upper Register: M.C
    Middle-Register: W.H
    Lower Register: M.C
    Vocal Musicianship: W.H
    Vocal Technicality: M.C
    Live Performance/Showmanship/Interpretation: W.H

M.C edges W.H out in terms of her melismatic skill but purely because of the sheer fluidity & elasticity in her upper chest voice; she is, simply, much more flexible there as she is in every register. Not only did/does she possess tremendous agility in high velocity/dramatic passages, her coloratura ability and execution of fioriture within her whistle register was (and still is) unbelievable and she knows exactly how to manipulate her voice to shape with the music. Her tonal quality only adds to the beauty of her voice; she is strictly technical. However, W.H possessed the much more superior, musically- interpretive wit; she ad-libbed/improvised much better than M.C ever could and her raw gospel roots only added to that effect - she also had one of the finest connected voices out of any Pop vocal artist to date; her transitions from chest to head voice were seamless, every note was centered accurately to the body of the melody and her diction, intonation and sense of pitch was immaculate. She was also the much stronger live vocal performer and show-woman.

  72. Whitney still possessed those qualities even after years of abuse to her voice. I always wonder who would have the longest longevity (Vocal-wise) but I guess it's impossible to determine now. Maybe if Whitney didn't abuse her voice, she would still be AMAZING. However, Celine beats both of them in vocal longevity.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Great performance.

  74. Who do you guys think are the defining voices of each country?

    USA- Whitney/Mariah
China- Huang QiShan (One of the best voices in Asia and maybe in the world)
    Philippines- Regine/Charice
Malaysia- Jaclyn Victor (Amazing voice during her prime)
Australia- ??? or Delta Goodrem (Haven't listened much to Australian singers)
Korea- SoHyang (Vocalist in a league of her own)

    Video:

    ReplyDelete
  77. I agree on Robert Plant. It was amazing what he did. He wasn't just a frontman of a band singing, he became a fourth instrument and as such an integral part of the band at times. Which is particularly impressive since Led Zeppelin were famed for improvising on stage.

AC/DC btw I also enjoy. Those guys kept up pretty well, didn't they? In fact most of those guys you mentioned are great. But I do love that Plant refuses to live in the past, opting instead for always evolving.
Here he is a bit more recently singing Americana for Pete sake and doing an awfully good job! :-)

  80. Once again it seems the "defining" voice of a whole nations are those of pop singers.
Canada also produced KD Lang for one. The US also has some great voices in Country and Jazz and gospel and Blues. I don't know about the other nations but I am sure China has some great voices in folk and Chinese Opera.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I like Zhang but when it comes to raw control and emotion, Huang QiShan. You may not agree but I think Huang Qishan is one of the best singers China has ever produced.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Amazingness!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6CeYtjlQGY

    ReplyDelete
  84. Well, that's the point in individuality. You don't need to =) They're singing technically is a lot better. But, who has the better voice? I think Regine hands down has a MUCH better voice than all of them combined, although SoHyang has an absolutely wonderful instrument herself. I mean, SoHyang has both the instrument and the technique so I don't wish to take anything from her. She's got a fantastic voice on her. But measuring their capacity, Regine's voice (again) is miles beyond great. So I personally put her voice above theirs. That's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Jacyln is pretty bad ass. I do love Jane as well. Huang is amazing, she has excellent moments. But I feel as though Jane and Jaclyn have strong voices as well. Yikes, it's tough.

  87. Man this song is perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Yeah. Huang is now like 42 and still sounds amazing. Her voice in her prime years was (And still is) amazing and that G5 is absolutely stunnning! I don't know if she could go into the whistle register as there are little a small amount of videos on her prime years. I think if she did try, she could have done it because she can enter the head voice at ease and go high as E6-F6. I still think Huang QiShan is miles better than Jane. Jane may be amazing but Huang QiShan is the undisputed Voice of China.

Have you ever seen a queen dressing like a stripper with drag queen make up? Of course not. Because even dressing "grand" should be tasteful. It's, like, the difference between a best dressed at the Academy Awards and a ghetto prom or gypsy wedding.

    ReplyDelete
  93. exorcism of emily rose!movie is not that scary but the fact that its based on someones life make it 10x scarier than any scary movie(except for the conjuring) and i researched(more like read only two long ass article) about her out of curiosity

    ReplyDelete
  94. That makes no sense whatsoever. What do strippers have to do with this? Or drag queen make up? The word "majestic" does not originate in any way from the strip or drag queen scene.
Dude, you seem to have a little obsession with both.
I am going by that quaint old thing folks invented to aid communication, called a dictionary.
You look up "majestic" and you will see it is defined a certain way, "refined" and "tasteful" are defined another way. "majestic" is used for instance for the way cliffs rise from the sea. Have you ever heard of cliffs rising from the see "refined"?

And the subject was the definition of "class". Josh defines it as "high and majestic", I defined it as "refined and tasteful" and you made the mistake of thinking "majestic" is the same as "tasteful and refined".
It is not. And that is because it is based on royalty. And historically royalty had certain things in common but "refined" and "tasteful" are not amongst those. Doing things "big" and "grant" they always DID had in common.

    ReplyDelete

She was never really THAT successful. She had two studio albums that sold well (not gigantic sales, but well), then Back to Basics was mildly successful and then she released Bionic (which became the standard for flopped album in pop music) and Lotus (also a huge flop). She alone hasn't had a hit since 2008, in her entire career she's had ten Top 10 songs (Beyonce, Britney, Rihanna, Katy, Gaga and Pink all had more, hell, even Taylor Swift had more and most of these girls aren't even in the business for as many years as she is)

Most of her credibility and appeal was due to the "voice of a generation" hype, which is sad because this means a generation grew up thinking that singing equals yelling. She was also never really that big among critics, always being criticized for having poor technique and oversinging.

Beyonce is a better dancer, better singer and has greater stage presence, Britney is better at the big spectacle stuff and always outsold Christina, Pink is a better songwriter and always had more critical acclaim. All Christina has going for her is the "voice of a generation" hype and the fact that The Voice is a hit show.

  100. lol thanks again tbh i would have never discovered singers you posted(except for celine dion imao whole world knows her),my knowledge of singers is very limited lol i just know about the one who are in the limelight now and yeah i agree every part of this world is really filled with great mucisians, its a shame that we can't know about every single one of them and appreciate them

  104. You're very welcome but...Youtube is your friend Anon. ;-)
That's where I find loads of singers. And by talking to other music lovers.
And yes, it is a shame indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I know and she would be a great performer. He first time I heard it I was sure it would get nominated. Oh well

    ReplyDelete
  106. Dead at you saying she was never really THAT succesful lol. Her debut album was MASSIVE in the US and Canada, Stripped was bigger worldwide than any Katy, Taylor or Beyonce album and B2B sold really well considering it costed twice as much as standard album. Then you have Mi Reflejo which was Huge in latin markets.
She has 11 top ten hits in US ( Beyonce has 3 more and Britney 2 - big difference huh?). Bionic and Lotus obviously flopped but it still doesn't change the fact that yeah she was THAT succesful.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Is this suppose to be a joke or do you guys actually like it?

    ReplyDelete
  108. Ha! I always have the urge to post some Anouk songs/performances on here but I don't know how people will react to her voice so I just keep lurking around. LOL. Are you Dutch?

    ReplyDelete
  109. My love for this Woman is just...

I've seen her live in concert - TWICE: 2009/2013 - and her prowess & talent on stage is just unbelievable. I can, most definitely, see why she classes Tina Turner as her, all-time, favourite artist/performer and why she is defined as a Contemporary- answer to her because the spirit of T.T just pours out of her from every inch; her energy, stamina & endurance is absolutely amazing. She is, most definitely, an icon of our generation - her live performances alone cement that - and (give or take another 10 years of solid artistry, performances & vocal [technical] perfection) she WILL be a Legend in due time. Her discography is very well adept too, both with Destiny's Child and as a Solo artist.

    ReplyDelete
  110. How in the freakin' world did she became famous? I mean, there are TONS of beautiful girls that can sing out there, and even if they can't, they at least have stage presence. This is definetly a video that should be erased from the internet and never be brought back again. EVER.

  112. Gustavo Rodrigues26 January 2014 at 17:32

She wasn't. Look at the numbers, not the hype: Her debut album was 8x Platinum, which would be huge success... today. She released her album in late 90's, when the music industry was in a much better place regarding sales. You want to know who was THAT successful back then?

    - Britney Spears (Baby One More Time): 14x Platinum
    - N'SYNC (No Strings Attached): 11x Platinum
    - Backstreet Boys (Backstreet Boys and Millenium): 14x Platinum and 13x Platinum
    - Eminem (The Marshall Mathers LP): Diamond
    - Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory): Diamond

That is HUGE success. 8x Platinum for a popstar's best-selling album is not huge if you take in account the time she released said album.

You can't compare album sales from the late 90's with nowadays because the revenue from album sales in 1999 was 14.6 billion and from 2009 was 6.3. No one sells albums today like they sold back then (except Adele, but 21 only had so much fuss over its sales BECAUSE no one else sells like that anymore).

Stripped was (for studio and business purposes) her second album and it went 4x Platinum after being released in 2002, let's look at some other albums from the same time: Avril Lavigne, with Let Go (6x Platinum), Britney with Britney (4x Platinum and it was her third album, when it comes to her second, she outsold Christina by miles), Norah Jones with Come Away With Me (Diamond), Shania Twain with Up! (Diamond)

About hits: Yes, the difference isn't THAT big between Beyonce, Christina and Britney (not that small either), but for an alleged HUGE popstar who was THAT successful, she should NOT be the weakest hitmaker between her contemporaries.

Also, you're right, my bad, she has eleven Top 10 hits, not ten, so great, she's as big of a hitmaker as Taylor Swift.

Mi Reflejo sold well, not HUGE. Like I said, she used to sell well, but that doesn't change the fact that, yeah, she wasn't THAT successful.

  113. I can tell you several of the guys here who know a lot about the technical side of singing became fans of Anouk. :-)
IMO you shouldn't let such questions stop you from posting favorites. The blog is read by lots more people than those posting. I am sure lots of them enjoy being introduced to new singers and some may become fans. That's why I keep posting stuff like Bluegrass and Country.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Yes, 'Plants musical versatility (as well as Freddie Mercury's) is unmatched; Rock/Hard-Rock/Heavy Metal - Rhythm & Blues/Blues-Rock/Blues - Bluegrass/Americana/Country & Folk etc. and he unites with them so perfectly. He also seems to be a very humble & genuine Man from what I've read about him and seen in interviews and the most ironic thing is that he is such an introvert in reality but, completely, comes alive when he's on stage singing/performing. That's the difference between somebody who EXISTS FOR their craft rather than LIVES BESIDE it. He, along with Bob Marley & Jimi Hendrix, are my Male musical inspirations.

Anyway, I'm curious; who would you say your favorite Rock vocalists/acts are? :)

    ReplyDelete
  121. idk understand a single word she's saying but man her voice is just ugghh

    ReplyDelete
  122. lol no in my opinion that's so raven alone beat the shit out of every nicklodean shows(except for drake and josh)

    ReplyDelete
  123. But....... The Disney Channel has produced some of the most ICONIC and WORLD-RENOWNED children's television shows & films of the last generation. Shows: Even Stevens, Lizzie McGuire, That's So Raven, Kim Possible, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Hannah Montana. Films: High School Musical, The Cheetah Girls and Camp Rock. How old are you? ICarly & Victorious are good shows, for what they are, but nothing compared to Disney pre-2007.

Now, if you're talking about "current" Disney then yes - every Nickelodeon show absolutely shits on Disney post- 2008.

  130. I know. That goes to show you how little they care for their artists. It's a unilateral benefit. They just endorse the singer on the platform only for their capital gain and once everything is over and done they discard the singer like an old pair of run down shoes. Idol at least makes more of an effort. It's a 50% effort. X Factor, 9% (if they're lucky) to none. What a cop out of a show. Melanie deserved more. I think she'll spring back, though. She's now on Broadway, so she just may rise the way Effy did in Dream Girls.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Whereas I do believe Regine's voice absolutely annihilates Melanie's without question, Melanie's rendition of the song was undoubtedly better than Regine's. Melanie's voice may be no match for Regine's but she's still got an excellent voice herself. I just didn't like Regine's version of the song. It was far too flat and underwhelming for my taste.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Ewww, NEVER! Jacob Lusk was pretty good. I LOVED his rendition of I Believe I Can Fly, but hell no. He ain't touchin' Lambert. He is, however, an excellent vocalist. I prefer Adam's mix. I'm overall a fan of the chestier notes than the ones that are more head dominant. Nothing against them, they're fine. But mannn, Adam is something else entirely.

I always thought the finals should've consisted of Lauren, Pia, Jacob and Scotty. I really didn't like Reinhart, at all.

    ReplyDelete
  133. This is by far the best rendition of this song, in my honest opinion. I've yet to hear someone take it to the extreme he did. That Climax was extraordinary!

  139. Depends on the person. German is not my language but I understand it almost as well as English. French, Spanish and Hebrew sound very familiar to me and I know a bit of those languages. And there are millions in this world who actually do not know any English at all.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Demi's tessitura probably sits around the high fourth or lower fifth octave. A C4 is too low. She pretty much lives in the belting register. I can see where the mezzo idea comes from though. Demi darkens her voice to try and give it more weight and make it heftier&rounder, and that can confuse a lot of people; fact of the matter is, it brightens up and gets very girly as she ascends. After her surgery, her voice did get a bit darker, but that's expected. She's probably forming into a full lyric now.

There are a lot of light sopranos. Mariah had a relatively light voice when she belted but she was the queen of resonance. Ariana, not so much. Not too mention Mariah had insanely resonant and dark lows, but she isn't considered a mezzo. She's definitely a soprano (even though she says she's an alto lol)

I'm not the best at explaining things, but Demi is a soprano.

    ReplyDelete
  141. LOL Yes, I picked up on that when you first started posting here remember. ;-)
Almost every language btw is made up of bits and pieces from other languages.

    ReplyDelete
  144. It's her who should apologize for this sacrilege. However, I must say it's a pitty that she's so damn horrible live (and that her music is not my cup of tea at all) because I quite like her voice in the studio.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Looks like someone's plagiarizing DD's writing on this WH video (scroll down to Nadia Smith's comment):

She is taking compliments from other people and passing your analysis completely as her own... it's absolutely ridiculous, thought you needed to know.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Celine is like the most paranoid person on the planet with her voice. Since she does shows pretty often she spends a lot of time at the Ears nose Throat doctor and is constantly seeing her vocal coach. Probably why she still sounds like herself lol.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I'm 17, and I actually did watch all those shows you listed. I'm talking about more recent shows, because the Lizzie McGuire generation can't be beat. But I feel like in more recent years (like post-Hannah) Disney has been very fluffy and cookie-cutter, compared to iCarly and Victorious (which are Nick's only recent shows I watched) that have a good amount of quirk and creative writing. Nick movies can't even come close to Disney movies tho.

Katy Perry killed it dead! First time I like a performance by the bitch. Her vocals were on point and she served Witch realness! I quite liked Yonce's performance also, it's obvious she bought herself Dita von Teese's DVD at Crazy Horse de Paris, because several of her visuals in this album are straight up "borrowed" from the Crazy Horse numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hrm, I've always thought of her being a mezzo, so we'll just keep that argument at bay XD but for her being a lyric, I can see that. but idk if you could call her a full lyric. I think she's on her way to becoming a lyric soprano. And I think Ariana's voice is resonant and loud when she belts, but her voice is too "gentle and girly" for it to sound like it is with out actually being there when she's live or something.

  161. Okay so I was wondering if you could explain to me something. I'm in no way trying to bash Michelle, but I personally think she was overrated on The Voice. I didn't feel a lot of appeal in her voice or tone, and I don't think her skill was anything exceptional. A lot of the times her voice felt almost rigid and shaky to me. And I think people made way too big a deal about her squatting or whatever as if that's an actual vocal technique that people use. I thought Danielle actually had a pretty tone and sounded really good on the songs she chose to sing, and she had a clear resonant voice with good high notes, especially for her age.

Beyonce seems to be a fan of "Crazy Horse" as she is borrowing several visual elements from that show for her videos and performances now, but she was on point. Lorde...so fucking overrated and ridic, I can't even. Pink had the best vocals of the night. Katy Perry was also on point with her witchiness and I got emotional when Madonna came out singing "Open your heart to me", she looked like a death twice warmed over but she did good.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Yes I did actually. :-)
Congrats on knowing so much about the between 6000 and 7000 languages in the world to be able to determine English leads the way in using "bits and pieces" of other languages.

A chameleon is an animal which changes it's color in order to blend in with it's surroundings. You using it to describe a dominant language which adapted words of other languages to it's vocabulary, goes a long way to prove you indeed have trouble "grasping" English.

    ReplyDelete
  168. ringo and paul performance together made me remember how i was obsessed over searching about whole controversies surrounding them,i think if there'll be competition of "most controversial star" beatles would be an ultimate winner of it! by the way what's y'all thoughts on "paul macartny's dead" conspiracy and "stephen king killed john lennon" etc etc

    ReplyDelete
  169. No I didn't "miss the point".
I meant to indicate... claiming a singer you like is the best a many thousand years old culture has produced, seems a bit of an overstatement when even in the same time frame there are better singers around.

Also how can someone be the "undisputed voice of China" when A: I am disputing you, B:you admit others are better, C: I wouldn't think someone who simply sings another nation's culture in her own language can really be called "The Voice" of her nation. Especially not when ,thankfully, the culture whose music she sings in is actually of very little significance in that nation. ( and tbh I hope that American culture falters before it gets to be as unfortunate and as major an influence in such a way deeper and more beautiful culture as the Chinese one as it has been in so many other parts of the world)

In short..I understand she is your favorite but it's not undisputed and some of the claims you stake are not as factual as you make them sound.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Don't get me wrong btw. Not saying your grammar isn't very good or your vocabulary not large. It's the application of that large vocabulary which is often off. Hence my agreeing on the "grasping" part. The things one can simply commit to memory you obviously have down pat. :-)

I have noticed the same problem in many people from Asian regions. Correct grammar (certainly more correct than your average American these days LOL) and a large vocabulary but a lack of true understanding of the nature of the language.
Maybe it's because Asian culture comes from a thinking fundamentally different to the culture English comes from? Or maybe it is that in today's English education there is not enough time spent on reading English literature?

But whatever it is, I most definitely pick up on that very quickly because frankly...it bugs the hell out of me. For several reasons. The main one being that I love the English language. Another being that it often leads to unnecessary miscommunication.

    ReplyDelete

I expected much better vocals then the first songs had.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I don't like the chorus, but I LOVE the rest of the song, specially the pre-chorus, Lea should definetly use more that beautiful head voice of her.

    ReplyDelete
  175. The nipples don't bother me,playbacking at the Grammies is weak, again especially when, like Beyonce, you don't need to.
But I am all with you on being deeply thankful Taylor Swift didn't win anything over, in every category she was nominated in, more deserving candidates. :-)

I am also disappointed Sarah jarosz, Della Mae and The Greencards didn't win but then again, since it were The Civil Wars and Del McCoury band who did win and who are absolutely equally deserving...I ain't got no beef with the Acadamy over those.

I didn't even know Daftpunk still existed but since they were working with Pharrell Williams and I discovered I like most of what he was involved with the last year or so, I guess I am going to check out that Album of the year winner.

Very pleased Led Zeppelin's Celebration day won Best Rock album but left wondering how this could win Best Rock performance

  182. You're still coming after me, even after I completely annihilated you with your first assumption that I knew nothing of musical pitch correction?

I thought I made it clear that your opinions did not translate into fact quite well, seeing as your opinion of my abilities was shat on.

A "big voice" can mean a multitude of things. It can mean sheer volume. It can mean resonation capacity (which is often hard to gauge fully on recordings). It can mean sheer tone. It depends. There's no delination or specification.

Please stop with pedadogy that is wrong. I respect your input, but I don't respect charlatans who parade about with an air of superiority that no one else can beathe aside from those who are easily impressed by esoteric language.

  183. What further astounds me is your obesession with this woman. While I admit to liking her, she is not my #1.

Comparatively, I dislike Britney Spears about as much as you dislike X.

I think she's quite possibly the least talented person to ever grace the stage. She could dance for a bit, but she never wrote much or even gave her own interviews without a hand to hold.

Unlike other stars with mental illness (see Cat Zeta Jones), she has done nothing but reinforce the stereotype that mentally ill and unable, as she couldn't even be let have an interview without pre-scripting

The difference is, I'm not on Britney's youtube videos/fan sites/ arguing with them about how Britney's IQ and EQ are probably only rivalved by her current chart posisitions. I just let it be.

At the end of the day, there is zero I can do. And really, what would there be to "do"? People enjoy her "screaming", you don't. I cannot stand Naranjo's voice. She seems to be of high regard to you (and even Pav) but I and many others don't like her voice.

Same with technical/practiced to the point of making Joan Sutherland feel lazy Maria Callas. To some she is just Callous, despite her range and even admitted emotional delivery

TLDR: get a new gig, man.

  184. I was gonna say "how rude, discouraging, elitist," but then I think of how it was NOT a joke that Katy Perry was claimed to be the next "Dame" of showbiz on the Grammy's. No. Lol.

Shirley Bassey would probably give up her title if she heard that bitch on stage (even though she admittedly was good for "Dark Horse"--probably because it's mostly talking, heh)

  185. You really did miss the point. Sad. The post above was my OPINION nothing factual about it. I thought one has the ability to enunciate their opinion freely without restrain? Seems I' am wrong when "commenting" with you.

  186. I think P!nk and Sara Bareilles gave the best vocals, but unfortunately Sara sang with Carol, who is an amazing writer, but is not a strong singer at all.

  187. ...precisely. The nature of a chameleon is adapting, changing in form, various forms from different things. It was figurative, just how one would be called a snake in reference to how conniving and deceitful they are, just as a snake. This is why you were called bland, Opie. Quit undermining things you don't understand. Thank you.

Everyone wants to talk crap because she makes her voice dark/heavy/smokey, but then when she sings in her "natural" voice people say it's because she can't hit lower vocals anymore. In my opinion I don't see what the big deal is, in her younger years/prime/"back to basic" and before, her lower vocals were full and believable and successfully achieved; but it bothered people because they were considered "artificial". Who cares her voice is still considered by the BEST by people who matter and actually know what the hell they are talking about.

Christina (Demi) vs Mariah lite (Ariana) all over again.

  190. ...so what you're saying pretty much is that it's fundamentally sound but off putting in the sense that it lessens the clarity of the message? That I understand, but that's subjective and to be quite honest, sounds like a personal problem. You find certain things to be Clunky, Mariah Carey's new single for example, yet it's perfectly fine...grammatically anyway lol. You make it seems as though it's borderline incorrect, and it's not. Also, explain to me this lack of "true" understanding of the language you speak of? 'cause me personally, I understand (or so I believe - wrongfully it seems) the language nearly through and through, I'm just confused as to how my use of the language stems from lack of understanding. Maybe the answer is simple - that it's tough to grasp - but then again, it seems like you're the guru on that. So please, do enlighten me with your grammatical acuity and understanding =)

Her vocals are ALWAYS raspy though, but that's her sound, it's not from straining...just probably from smoking and drinking and being a butch lesbian trapped in the body of a hetero chick, LOL.

  192. Easily. A Spinto Tenor will have a stronger, powerful sound as opposed to the Lyric. The Spintos voice is loud and heavy and doesn't sound as bright. They have a darker colour than the Lyric. So let's say, a Lyric Tenor is more feminine sounding than a Spinto. SPintos will have a manlier sound in comparison to that of a Lyric...mature if you will. Spintos can project a large sounds, Lyrics by nature can't.

Well, let's not ignore how exhausting the whole thing must have been for her.

    What about her voice though?

  195. Terrible comparison seeing as Mariah destroys Christina. However, Ariana in no world destroys Demi, not with that frail thing she calls a voice lol

What do you mean? Can't you feel the emotion in her voice and her gorgeous tone? Because that's all that matters when singing!
