Tamar Braxton Pays Homage To Diana Ross @ BET Honors

Tamar Braxton was serving smouldering bugeye for her 2014 BET Honors performance! Not sure what was going on with her, but she had the oddest expression on her face for a lot of the Diana Ross medley (does two songs make a medley? Who cares, I'm using it).

Tamar spent most of the ridiculously short medley rummaging around her lower range and head voice- the latter sounding gorgeous. It was only as she was wrapping it up, while singing Upside Down, that the belt was unleashed. But by then, the performance was over and I was left wanting more!!!

Still, lurve watching Tamar perform.

Thoughts?

  3. LOL, it's alright. But Beyonce isn't too tall herself at 5'7 (kinda tall by woman standards) and she dwarfs cute little Janelle. LOL...

  4. She sounded absolutely GORGEOUS throughout both performances.

[P.S: I love Diana Ross' "Disco" output; 'Upside Down' is still blasted when I go to my Gay Clubs. LOL]

  6. The clarity to her voice returned! I'm in love with this women's voice! Such a stellar performance although she needs to work on her lower register, you can barely hear it. Apart from the lower register, this women pretty has all the qualities of a great voice.

  7. Yes, I agree, her lower register is not the greatest; she loses resonance below G3 and pre- E3, it's just air. However, the tonality within her upper register & head-voice/falsetto are beautiful.

    LOVE Tay-Tay!!!

  8. The thing is, she and Bruno use to tour together when they were both on their last albums. I would have LOVED to have gone to see them bc they are amazing performers when they are on stage. They give a real show with dancing and energy and are able to sing amazing music at the same time. Unfortunately that's getting hard to find these days. LOVE YOU JANELLE!

  9. I don't mind if it's dubbed... I mean c'mon, let's be realistic...
But the nodes are definitely doing something to her voice. Her head is getting weaker and weaker and it was noticeable when she switched into her head voice at around 03:05 in the vid.

  10. Love her! Ever since I heard Love & War (the single, not the album... there were a few songs I really kind of disliked) I can't get enough of her! Her voice seemed to be resonant again and she really enjoyed herself on stage this time. Very nice to watch. Especially Upside Down. Love that song.

  11. She has a pretty voice, but the way she sings sounds slurred to me and her vibrato is very...how to say....not my cup of tea to put it nicely. And on top of that, I simply don't like Tamar. LOL.

  12. This was lipped from beginning to end... I get you point, but you can tell she is not actually singing. So yeah, don't think it was edited, just plain playback. Not that it would change much, still misleading as you say.

  13. you're all dumb as heel. Pay attention at her breathing, she's singing live. It is just dubbed like ALL the performances that night. Even Aretha's was. Mariah gets outta breath sometimes. Can't you see her chest moving?

  14. Mariah's voice is ravaged at this point in time. The audible deterioration began all the way in the Butterfly era, and each album was a step down from the last vocally. Let's be honest with each other- we all knew this day was coming. She no longer has a voice that she wants to use publicly.

I've been saying this for a while- Mariah is a woman past her prime who has done too much with her voice. We should all lower our expectations of her. It's not like this decline came out of nowhere- it's been gradual. Why does everybody still hold high standards for her?

And sure, there are divas far older than her that still have a voice. So what? That's irrelevant, each voice is different. What does that have to do with Mariah Carey?

As a HUGE fan of Mariah, who has every album by her and is heavily influenced by her multi-octave vocal gymnastics, I must say...An artist has to know when they are past their best, both vocal and artistic, and when it's time to retire and leave the audience with beautiful, legendary, influential memories...instead of painfully decaying in front of the whole world.

  16. TAMAR TAMAR TAMAR just Stunning and Fun. Her voice sounded lovely and she looked lovely. Also, i think Tamar is th biggest lamb out there, Mariah's influence is very prevalent to her and im not even bothered by it.

  17. Totally still excited for the album, don't get me wrong. But at this point (and some would argue for much of her career) Mimi is a studio artist.

  18. must be those acting roles she's taken in between....

  23. she redeemed herself. after that ugly Christmas performance.

  24. As a HUGE supporter of artists that are determined and want to continue their craft, I must say... Mariah should be allowed to do whatever she wants, and not be pressed to retire.

  25. All true, however these standards are created by her. I love Mariah, and personally have loved her lower range most of all. She feels she has to always place a whistle, high belt or use her upper range in ever song, which is really over kill in my opinion. Sure she can do what she wants to do, but why not just record songs she can sing live at least sometimes. To me its a bit embarrassing for someone like Mariah to lip in front of an audience of her peers as Aretha and Chaka Khan, Jennifer Hudson and Tamar Braxton who idolizes her all watching her. Mariah is not a dancing singing entertainer. She is a vocalist that has not been owning her craft as she use too regardless of vocal deteriation. I personally don't think Mariah is taken care of her voice, she always drunk on interviews rambling.

  26. Her Dynamics are just...she so doesn't have the voice she foolishly believes she does.
Damn, I sound like such a hater lol

  27. I feel like everyone is exaggerating the deterioration of Mariahs voice. I am not in denial thinking that she can sing at all like she used to-but people are acting as if she is singing through a crack pipe on stage. Yes her voice isn't as fluid as it used to be. Yes she tends to sing softly rather than belt it out all the time. Yes she does get pretty hoarse on certain notes in her upper register. But aside from those three current issues with her voice she is pretty consistent in regards to how she used to sing. Thing is she has always had her live performances dubbed and lipped (ever since musicbox at least) so the way that people are reacting now to the fact that it's a tad bit more obvious is bothersome. Perhaps its because she's been in the game a long time so theyre just using any excuse to make her seem less grande than her career has led us to believe. But I find it funny nobody attacks Patti or Aretha for not sounding like they used to. I mean old Patti had a warm and resonant voice. Nowadays its shrill and screetchy. Aretha used to have a very bright and powerful voice. Nowadays its weezy and nasal. People still regard those women as vocal perfection (why I have no idea) and you are right that each voice is different. I think its sad people expect perfection from these singers who have been singing consistently for decades.

  28. I love Tamar's voice. Check out her voice at People pre-grammy party, terrific. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkbQbyhSMY0

  29. I mostly agree with the dubbing part. About Patti and Aretha, tho I am no expert of their work, they are way older than MC. Their vocal decline started / became noticeable much later. Also, the belter I am finds it very hard to believe that any upper belt we've seen MC perform lately was actually live. Her facial expressions, the microphone position, her neck, her whole body... just nah. She struggles to hit basic notes, strains, her chin is incredibly high...and then, BAM ! awesome crystal clear belt !? Come on....

  30. I for one can't wait for the album.

  31. Agreed I get a bit uncomfortable watching her live performances. Patti and Aretha have lost much of the quality they once had in their prime but Mariah situation is different and as we all know and talk about over and over is the 97' big change. And pretty much went down since. Aretha, Patti, and Chaka will never be seen lip syching no matter what. And as a vocalist who is not a dancing entertainer, Mariah is in the same group. If she wants to continue her legacy as a "powerhouse diva" or whatever, she needs to do whatever it takes to at least deliever decent live performances of whatever current song she has because unfortunely the bad gets talked about more than the great performances she once gave. Sometimes I think she is hiding something big about her voice. Because Im sure she of all people know her true vocal state and sound quality. On another note, I cant imagine just being like, "oh well, I just give up, Im going lip my way through the remainder of my career". Maybe she has tried all alternatives with vocal coaches and doctors and theres no hope of any recovery.

  32. I think we can all agree that vocally, Mariah's past her prime. That's understandable, nobody's voice can remain perfect forever. I wish that she would just stop wasting so much energy trying to maintain that illusion of past perfection and make the most of the voice she has now. I think a lot of people would forgive a voice crack here and there if you're at least being genuine. Lip-syncing (especially if you're as sneaky as Mimi is about it) just erodes trust and creates distance between the performer and the listener. A performance like this is cool if you're into tribute acts, but really, most people just want to hear you sing. Because damaged or not, Mariah's voice is still a musical force. I think she just needs to find a new way of wielding it that plays to her strengths. But now more than ever, she seems content to be a collection of tics and mannerisms stuffed into a too-tight gown rather than someone who can be relied upon to give a good live vocal performance. After more than 20 years in music, I hoped that she would grow as a singer, but it's been sad watching sort of the opposite happen. And she's become so boring to me. It's like she took one musical risk back in 1995 and decided that was enough for one lifetime. The more the years go by, the less sure she seems of herself. I guess it's one of the drawbacks of being eternally 12.

  34. Aretha WILL NEVER be seen lip synching???? check again, you fool. Watch the video. You can jump into 2,57, and see that the bitch was miming. And so you can go to hell.

  36. any fool can see that at 2,59 her voice cracks. They tried to "fix" it, but you can still hear the failure.

  40. Their overall decline did appear much later in their careers but the characteristics and abilities of their voices changed dramatically around the same time. Unlike Mariah however theyve learned to embrace the changes and sing with them instead of trying to ignore them and continue to sing like their younger selves.

As someone who respects artistry, musicianship, and the legend that Mariah still is...the artist should know or be reminded when their less than stellar turn out is turning them into a caricature of themselves.

  45. I love her and l agree she over does it a lot her singing would be better if she didn't. Pretty voice bad execution, Im glad she has her voice back though hope kind of losing it teaches her a lesson.
Jordan Sparks is much younger and seems to sing like the older more knowledgeable singer lol

  46. I was too, how shall I put it - "intrigued" by that weird facial expression (which she always seems to have anyway) you mentioned to really pay much attention to the overall performance or vocals but this wasn't too bad.

  47. Well very few sopranos resonant well or can hit and sustain notes properly in the third octave anyway.

  48. Are we sure she isn't related to the Jacksons? :O

  49. I love this woman so much. Her energy is soooo contagious... And she's sooo tiny.... She's 4'11. Like I could tote her in my book bag!!!! She's so adorable.
