[New Music] Tori Amos Returns With "Trouble's Lament"

Tori Amos is back, and she's talking about her friend Lucifer again- religious types beware!

New song Trouble's Lament is a jaunty track that sees the Diva personifying "trouble" and giving her an origin story that's deserving of its own comic. Tori spoke a little about the inspiration behind the song, saying:

"It's really in the blood. It's almost like you listen to the land speaking to you. And wherever I am I can hear the South calling me. I really like the idea that trouble was a young woman....I see her on my travels a lot. And maybe I knew her many years ago when I was in my twenties."

Taken from her forthcoming LP, Unrepentant Geraldines, Trouble's Lament is Tori Amos finally back doing Tori Amos after what feels an age of concept, seasonal and classical-inspired output. Hopefully the single hints to LP number 14 being overall more insular and less collaborative in nature. I need some undiluted Tori, stat!

  1. Sounds like a mix of Kate Bush and The Civil Wars. Mostly Kate. How fortuitous Kate is going to perform again just as this imitation Kate comes out with a "new" (as in derivative) album. Here's hoping come August,Kate will show she is the better Kate Bush!

Anyway, seeing as this is very derivative of two acts I really like, I did enjoy the song.

  2. hmm, seems alright. Though not something I would listen to when I'm not working.

  3. It is grounded peanuts to which oil is added Leith.
It's very tasty (in Holland we also use it to make a thinner and spicier sauce for meat with it. Which is Really good!) and very fattening but also ,if you are not allergic, healthy. The fats are the "good" fats and it has lots of vitamine E.

Aren't you in an area where you'll find a lot of Dutch tourists?
If so, find yourself a camping ground and I bet you will find some Dutch folk who brought peanut butter with them. I'm sure they'll let you taste. ;-)
Or maybe there's a shop catering to Dutch tourists? Bet they stock the stuff.

  4. Really, you don't think hazelnut spread tastes like peanut butter? I taste tons of similarities but the biggest difference is the fact that hazel nut spread has cocoa in it. Also, homemade peanut butter tastes quite different from that stuff in the stores. My grandma works at a factory who makes both hazelnut spread and peanut butter for Kroger and the peanut butter she makes tastes quite different from the peanut butter she produces at her job. And that custardy taste is something I noted in many homemade peanut butters compared to the store bought peanut butter. I might sit and watch my grandma make peanut butter one day to see exactly what she puts in it to make it taste different. I mean both are distinctively identifiable as peanut butter but homemade peanut butter has that custardy flavor.

    I rather like it.

  6. I asked a few of my friends and I'm the only one who can taste the similarities between hazelnut spread and peanut butter LOL. And I'm sorry but it's just some things so good that is worth getting sick over. LOL.... I don't care peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans...ALL drive me out my head but taste so good, especially fried with some good leafy greens and some rich cheese.

But I may have misstated somethings. The Hazelnut spreads we have here have this nearly overpowering chocolaty taste with a more subliminal nutty taste and that is what I was referring to as being similar to peanut butter (store bought kind). The store bought peanut butter has a distinctive lack of richness due to a lack of well...butter fat content (I guess because it spoils so quick). I've tried homemade peanut butter from various people (none top my grandmother's LOL), and all are much richer then that mess they pass as peanut butter in these stores. As for the custardy flavor, its not overpowering or too eggy (can't stand it that way), but complementary and noticeable and adds a whole 'nother level of creaminess to the peanut butter.

That reminds me of my grandma's sweet potato custard bread and her sweat potato pies... See what you've started... Now I have a huge craving for custard LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  7. LOL That is exactly why I responded. You might also set off a craving for custard in Leith and then he will get out and get some peanut butter and be bitterly disappointed at it's distinct lack of custard.

I don't know what the hell they put in peanut butter in the US these days. I remembered after my previous response that I did actually tasted US peanutbutter once. From a tin the US government gives out. It tasted just like Dutch peanutbutter.
Which, I just checked contains "Ingrediƫnten: PINDA 85%, plantaardige olie (raapzaad, soja, volledig geharde palm), zout."

Translated that says "Ingredients: PEANUT 85%, vegetable oil (rapeseed, soybean, fully hardened palm), salt."

I think possibly some people add something else to their home made recipe to get that "rich creaminess"?
I see no other way you'd get a custardy taste from the storebought peanut butter ingredients.

I also think I just written the words "peanut butter" more often in just these three replies than I did combined in the fifty years previously.

Anyway, glad to hear your allergy is not the severe kind.:-)
Aside from not being able to enjoy anything containing nuts, it must be terribly scary to be as allergic as some people are, where it can kill them.

  8. Well, I don't think 'derivative' is a really fair word, but whatever, that's your opinion.
But, I don't know if you meant to say that way, but if you're trying to say that Mrs. Amos is trying to capitalize over Kate's performance announcement, you're completely off the mark, 'cause Tori's album has been announced way before Kate's performance...

    ReplyDelete
  9. I stand by the "derivative" but I did not mean to imply Kate's decision to perform after 35 years which came as a complete surprise to everyone and Tori's new album which obviously took considerable time to be made (and likely wasn't heard yet by Kate) are in any way connected at all.
I simply meant to say..luckily we can see Kate herself perform instead of hearing Tori imitate Kate. ;-)
Sorry but I simply never been a fan of Tori because I always felt she was too heavily "inspired" by Kate, of whom I AM a huge fan.
Though in all honesty, I hadn't heard her sound quite as much as Kate as she does in this new song.
Maybe though, that is why this is a song a actually rather liked.

And no, I am not so much "blaming" Tori imitating Kate,as I am saying it lead to my not being interested in her. But I know Tori is a fan of Kate and has giving her the appropriate respect always. I am sure the similarity in sound is coming from genuine fandom by Tori of Kate. Not some cheap ploy.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yeah, I feel bad for those who have a severe allergy to nuts because they don't know what the fuck they're missing LOL. It may be a little insensitive but the versatility in those little things are out of this world. I could go on and on about my love for almonds and everything I put them in.

And to my knowledge the way my grandma prepares her peanut butter is by roasting them (The smell makes me itch but eating them doesn't bother me), crushing them (which takes forever because she does it the old fashion way) and as she does it, she's slowly pouring in melted butter. She continues to stir until she gets the perfect consistency but there must be something I'm missing because the taste is so distinctively custardy. I can just about figure out how she would infuse custard into the recipe, but it'd probably be simpler to ask her than to try and figure this out from the few quick glances I got of watching her prepare it LOL.... Problem solving is sooo not my forte, even for recipes. Peanut butter scorches really easy so allowing it to thicken by heating is not that viable a solution so the custard has to be infused while mixing with the peanuts. And knowing my grandma, she definitely uses the custard to sweeten the peanut butter rather than using brown sugar like everyone else, because that is sooo her style. But finding the right consistency with the oil would get tricky so there either would have to be less oil that custard, more oil than custard, or tons of peanuts... UGH let me stop guessing because all I'm doing is confusing myself. And yes, we've both stated peanut butter quite a lot in these few posts LOL. It's time for me to calm down because I've gone a little custard crazy.

  11. Ok, I'm misuderstood you in that case. And I apologize for that.
I am actually prefer Kate over Tori Amos, Tori was an acquired taste for me.
I don't like, however, when some of Kate's fan diss Tori for sharing similarities with her.
That's not the case here, you explained your point of view rather well and politely.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I actually prefer**

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thanks! So did you. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  14. It might be the fact that she uses butter instead of oil?
Like I showed in the recipe of the most popular brand here...there's nothing in there to sweeten the stuff. There are only peanuts, oil and salt.
But maybe your grandma uses vanilla? I can imagine that together with butter instead of oil might create that custardy effect?

    ReplyDelete
  15. And now, I am going to eat some of the custard cake I happen to have. And you should get your skinny butt off to the nearest store and get something custardy aswell! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well its 10:38 pm here so I'd have to wait till tomorrow to run to the store to get me something custardy... cheesecake, brownies and oreos would be so good right now.... They have whole pies like that at Walmart for like 8 bucks LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  17. No gas stations open late? I thought in the US there's always places open 24/7?
Or maybe you can whip up some vanilla pancakes at home?

  18. wait when did 1d started making quality music?that song "story of my life" doesn't sound anything like their other songs, its quite good..

  19. I love all kind of nuts (please refrain from any easy joke...) and fortunately, I'm not allergic so I guess I'd like it.

I've never seen that many Dutch tourists here as you say, most of them are German or British, also, I don't live in Mallorca anymore, so the number or foreigners has inmmensely dropped. Anyway, I guess there's an easy way to find peanut butter, I just never really got to try haha

    ReplyDelete
  20. nope, but hazelnuts are my favourite nuts *_*

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, if you are that fond of edible nuts (oh, that is actually not much better to the Dirty Mind is it? LOL)...you must definitely try peanut butter one day. :-)

  23. In her words, "It's more than implied in our relationship that I can't do videos like I
used to. It's out of the question - which I like, by the way."

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, I also read the Billboard article by now. And she also adds that he IS okay with her making out with women. (which btw means he is a dimwit and she is sending a, to many lesbians, rather reprehensibly message)

The whole thing to me reads very much like their relationship is one dictated by his rather antiquated and insecure views and her in anequally antiquated fashion enjoying him holding such views. Seems it's a mutual desire to be in that kind of relationship.
All in all to I remain with my initial statement, I cannot feel much respect for a woman choosing such a relationship.

  25. Well Missy Eliot's prodigee herself made her comeback yesterday in Koko London and her voice was perfect (FANGASM!!!!)!! Well it is better than it was in her debut. And I never heard her sing with so much ease and open throat... I mean her voice is literally ringing with resonance.... Oh and she has a new song that reminds me of her debut but IMHO this song takes me there even further than her debut Joint...!!!!! Like I'm re-in love with her voice all over again...Love you Jazmine!

  26. Of course one has to take into account the writing of Billboard. I have seen articles on Alison Krauss, one in particular, in which a picture of a person is painted I find hard to mar to the person I have seen/heard in countless video/audio interviews.

There are also incredibly few quoted statements in that whole two page "interview" recount. (with Shakira)

  27. I too loved 2000-2006 (and maybe some 2007) I especially remember 2005-06 because that's when I started getting into pop music. There were a lot of great comebacks (Mariah!) and I associate the music of this era with a particularly happy time in my life. The radio had a lot of variety - oh, the days when R&B and Hip-Hop got mainstream play! And Rock music did well! I miss the times when electronic/techno music was underground because there were a lot of great material coming out at that time, but maybe it was Lady Gaga that brought it mainstream and made a mess of of the radio. I am SICK of EDM. You have these awful melodies and the beats are so overproduced and there really isn't much lyrical quality. All you have are a bunch of stupid buzz words and beat drops. It all sounds the same. I used to enjoy the radio, but I've stopped listening altogether. I'm not a fan of Katy Perry or any of her clones. Her songs sound so empty to me. As for pop music, I'm glad Miley came back when she did. Besides Beyonce, it was the only pop album I purchased in 2013. I do miss Missy Elliott, I could do with a new album!

    ReplyDelete
  28. You're right on the money, especially about so many songs trying to sound "epic". I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed. It's so pathetic. They all think they've got the winning formula for a hit song, but it's gotten so predictable. Ryan Tedder is responsible for a lot of those.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't think she's black-face. Parody though, that's accurate.

    ReplyDelete
  30. TBH, I have no idea of what custard means so don't worry xD

    ReplyDelete
  31. LOL Only when Black Robin grandma makes it, it seems. But normally...no, no butter.

    ReplyDelete
  32. So Milhouse's way of doing peanut butter is not right? Oh my god, I've been living a lie...

(Although I'm joking I actually am surprised lol)

    ReplyDelete
  33. All the good ingredients for making anything wonderful are all over my grandma's house since she cooks really well lol. My mom, she's getting better but she cooks repetitiously, the same thing every time she cooks.... The fanciest seasoning we have here is this "Italian herb mix" lol. Another thing that tastes wonderful are flourless pancakes, made with thick heavy cream, egg, banana, and a dash of vanilla oil, but bananas are another food item that scorches incredibly easy so you have to have good ears while cooking.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Who is Milhouse???

In Holland you are not allowed to use the word butter in a product which doesn't contain actual butter. Hence the stuff here is called Pindakaas or in literal translation..peanutcheese.
Because in the famous "logic" of legalese...you CAN call something "cheese" when it has no cheese in it. Or even milk.
Seems we are a hell of a lot more protective of our butter then of our cheese.
Kinda weird for a country whose cheese is known worldwide but there you have it! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well, doesn't sound like you need to go to any stores. You have both the ingredients AND, as we know, the skills to whip up something way better yourself right there. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I hear she also plays a mean game of tennis! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  37. peanut butter is made with either vegetable oil or some other type of oil and roasted peanuts as well as some other goodies. Custard, is hard for me to explain what is but its basically a cream based food made with egg. It has a distinctive taste and you know custard when you taste it, ranging from cheese cake, to frozen custard, to banana pudding, to plain tapioca, to sweet potatoe pie/bread, to crĆØme brulĆ©... Mind you I only can make 2 of those types of custards lol. Well, pudding period is rather easy too.

And my grandma told me she only makes that type of peanut butter when everyone is gonna eat it all in one day because it spoils ridiculously fast due to the ingredients. She didn't bother to specifiy what all she put in there but actual butter and a form of custard seems to be the case. I could confirm butter from the get go because she uses butter for everything and I saw her mixing the grinded peanuts with actual butter.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah, I try. LOL... But as of lately, I've been having gigantic cravings for everything but have been settling for packs of ramen, good old fashion sausages, and the occasional hot cereals. There are so many cheap and extremely delicious recipes my very linear and by the box mom won't let me try but my grandma would and has in the past. I remember the days when I'd print of recipes from the internet and my grandma would make them every sunday... LOL, now I can't be bothered to leave my bed to go over her house for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Custard is another version of Crema Catalana or Creme Brulee. The stuff under the burned sugar.

  40. Hahaha well shame on you! At least get out of bed to see your grandma! Bet she misses you on sundays. :-)

  41. The only song I actually like on that list is Pharrell's song.
And after checking out the whole list...I'm running back to Anouk.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Milhouse's a character from the Simpson. His way of making peanut butter was to put a bunch of peanuts and a whole pack o butter into the mixer (without the cover)

Here we have a similar rule on iogurt. There's a famous brand of milk products called Danone and in their flavoured iogurts you can read "with strawberry/coconut/banana/whatever flavour", why? because it (supposedly) tastes like strawberry but does not contain it lol

    ReplyDelete
  43. OMG Crema Catalana, love that dessert *_*

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ah right! That's why the name sounds familiar.
Danone is known here too. :-)

I wouldn't say it was a golden age. But those were pretty damn good times for mainstream music. Teen pop just died, hip hop, alt rock and R&B took over and pop was not generic for once. Then Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Kesha, Bieber arrived and radio went back to playing generic pop.

    2000-2006 were good times indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't quite agree with that definition. For example, Miley's got attractive and/or exciting qualities that makes her appealingfor some people, but I'd never define her as glamurous.

    ReplyDelete
  47. How can you say that??? Look how glamorous she is! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. But kidding aside...girl can look glamorous when she chooses to...

  49. On a side note...Oxford dictionary is a pretty crap one. Cambridge and Merriam-Webster are way better dictionaries.

  57. Hey now don't be dissing my teen pop; B*witched, NSYNC, early Britney and OF COURSE the almighty Spice Girls will always have a sacred place in heart. Personally I don't see why 'pop' is such a dirty word, sure there are terrible songs such as Roar, but then there are also pop masterpieces such as Umbrella. The same can be said of any genre, it just so happens pop (short for popular so its hardly surprising) is on the forefront of music.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I gotta agree cuz we need something different. Like that sound. I don't even care if its a slightly older sound or a different voice or preeminent sound.
Sarcastically: LIKE DAMN WHERE IS AMY WINEHOUSE WHEN U NEED HER. #RIP

    ReplyDelete
  59. U wanna know something else I noticed I noticed that a lot of these singers try to sound like the other ones. Like example: Jason Derulo tries to sound like Chris Brown. It's to the point where they lost there Identifiable character.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I missed this long comment chain but I don't really care to read it all. But I agree 100% here.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Actually, Rihanna was around in 2000-2006, that is when her career started, she just changed the genre of music she played. Otherwise I agree.

    ReplyDelete
  62. But at least they worked out a signature sound for themselves. You can easily differentiate their song from the other artists' songs right at the start. Others' songs are not similar only to their own ones - they are similar to all the other songs around.

  64. Yes that part I got, it's the "too many...even before this" I was puzzled at. Sounded like shade to me too.

  65. Love the Kate Bush feeling on it !

    ReplyDelete
  66. Maybe your grandma just doesn't know how to make peanut butter? Especially if it tastes "custardly" and "like Hazelnut spread" . ;-D
Or she came up with a brilliant new recipe!
Or maybe US hazelnut spread is tasting like peanut butter but Dutch isn't.

But I am left stumped how someone with an nut allergy can do all that tasting?

Anyway..probably Dutch peanut butter also tastes different than US one. All I can say is...never tasted any brand Dutch peanut butter which tasted like you describe. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  67. LOL No it doesn't. Hazelnut spread tastes nothing like Peanut butter. I would also not describe the latter as "custardly" at all.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The problem i see here is that anything can be classed as generic if you dislike it, i hate the one republic song because i feel its generic and generally crap but then i again i like timber by kesha which is also country inspired so its quite a biased situation.

i think the real problem with music these days is the quick turnaround , songs are made released, sponsored and thrown away in a span of a few months with no connection to the song being made, songs are no longer epic because the internet demands new music be put out constantly.

    anyway thats my opinion lol.

    ReplyDelete
