Nina Hagen- Vocal Profile/ Range

Vocal Type: Soprano
Whistle Register: Yes
Vocal Range:3.1 Octaves. D3- F6 (approx)
Longest Note: 11 seconds
Vocal Pluses: Glorious soprano highs and amazing tenor like lows and a voice that is able to scream in a rock wail or be soft as any balladeer. Versatility is key to defining the voice of this lady. I would be very surprised if she is not classically trained.
Vocal Negatives: Nina's flexibility may not be to everyone's taste and it's likely the extreme way she uses her voice will turn many listeners off.

  1. Nina is the only singer (in any genre) i've ever heard who has sung in all 4 vocal registers on one album (well, if you include "greatest hits" compilation albums...): pulse/vocal fry, modal/normal, loft/falsetto & whistle/short cord.

  4. She has to be a dramatic soprano. Like, she's classically trained so it's valid, but the strength of her low register can't be denied, but she has the soprano highs with such ease. And that's now--she's over 60, and most of her recordings were done after forty, if I remember correctly.

But I am super far from an expert. XD I'm just obsessed.

  5. Nina's range extends down to a frightening D2 and up to G6.
As to her vocal type, she's like a pseudo- Soprano Sfogato. She's a bit too rough around the edges to be one, but she has all the qualities of one.

  6. Well, damn, I didn't know women can go lower than E2....

  7. Its more along the lines of her actual vocal range being D2-D7 since those are her most usable and dare I say most polished notes.....Hands down, this woman is amazing...

Her style is inspirational. I wish I could sing in super headvoice that way....Hers extends up to G6. lol

  8. I can name several that can get down there :)
Pat Carol and Bea Arthur were capable of singing down to B1 :)

  9. Cool. I gotta look them up. Nina Hagen sounds like a very metalic tenor except in her head voice wich is weighty and dynamic like a dramatic soprano.

  10. I agree, she's a near soprano sfogato -- these are usually highly prized mezzos with ease at both the highest and lowest ends. They are classed with sopranos in opera work and sing soprano parts.

  11. Im not sure if she may be considered to have the capability to sing below second octave but she definitely hits higher than F6...and probably deeper than D3 according to the video

  12. Basically 4.3 Octaves?

  13. WOW. That's . . . G#1-Bb7 = = 6.2 Octaves and a semitone? That's a WIDE range even beating Mariah's record for biggest connected range in all of Pop.

  14. IDK if she can phrase in the 1st octave... She generally just goes down there and moan. But she can sing a D2 well, and can sing up to F6 in full HV...

  15. Then it would be 4.3 Octaves. Correct me if I'm wrong.
