[Vocal Profile] Vanessa Amorosi

Vocal Type: Falcon Soprano
Whistle Register: Yes
Vocal Range: F2-F6 (4 Octaves)
Longest Note:20 seconds
Vocal Pluses:A well structured voice; strong from the lowest depths of the voice to the soprano heights. Demonstrates agility across all registers of the voice allowing for the production of complex melisma, and fast transitions throughout the voice. Often displaying this through the ability to replicate guitar solos (See " I Wanna Be Your Everything, Jumpin' Jack Flash, My Problem Is You"). Able to apply a raspy texture throughout the belting range with a neutral larynx and in a healthy manner. Incredible breath control allows for long phrases, sustained notes and periods of uninterrupted melisma.

The lower register carries a full, dark and heavy sound and achieved with a large quantity of freedom and ease [see Off On My Kiss]. The mid-range is capable of producing a large column of sound and sustain notes for substantial amounts of time [see Heroes Live Forever, Suns Up].

The Upper Register is the most used aspect of the voice, and is noted as the singer's signature. The notes in this range are achieved with an ease that is typically not seen in lower voice types. Showing the ability to phrase and sustain up in the sixth octave. The upper register is tinged with a "guitar-like" timbre that is not commonly heard by singers.

The head voice, while rarely used in the higher reaches, is capable of being produced with complete ease and freedom, possessing a bright and full quality.

Vocal Negatives: On occasion shows a bit of difficulty around the passagio area of the voice (D5-E5) as the notes may come out flat or tense.

Update by Serendipity

  1. I love her ,I love her,I love her.She is also capable of extreme emotional live performances(Tends to sing with her entire body) and has a very powerful voice.

Looking forward to her next album.

Thanks for making profile on her :D

  2. Thought she was a contralto, lol.

  3. What ? contralto .. NO !! KK :D

  4. She's hit an F6 in whistle.

  5.  For positives I'd agree with your initial statement, however I'd add on that her lower register is weighty and dark, a very odd contrast considering she's one of the few females that can sing in the soprano tessitura. Also her mid-range carries a very full sound and a large one at that (see "Heroes Live Forever" or "Higher Ground" very surprising as most high belters typically neglect this part of their voices. And her head voice just has this very huge sound to it. In her live performance of "I Wanna Be Your Everything" she hit the E6 with so much more power than the studio version. One of the strongest 6th octave head notes I've seen from a non-classical singer.
And for negatives I'd say she's inconsistent above F5, sometimes it's full and resonant or sometimes it's a bit thinner in sound although sometimes it seems stylistic.
She's incredible for someone with no vocal lessons! Most people would blow out their vocal chords attempting what she does with no training at all!

  6. @DivaDevotee Vanessa has an F2 in "Somewhere In The Real Wordl" and an F6 live, making her range exactly 4 octaves :) And all of it without the use of whistle register. She actually hasn't shown any whistle notes, and I don't she really needs them.

  7. Thanks for the update Diva!
Although her longest note is 26.9 seconds.

  8. An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto a

  22. Hi there, after reading this awesome post i am also happy
to share my knowledge here with friends.

  23. I got an F3. She sings D4 (I)-C4(I'd)-A3 (be)-G3 (e)-G3 (loooo)-F3 (oved)-D3 (in)-C3 (the)-D3 (real)-D3 (world).

  24. That's correct. I went off a friend's pitching, and he isn't exactly the best pitcher :P

  25. PRODIGY! This woman is sick. Her mix is to DIE for. In fact, very ideal considering how high she belts. I'm not all that Familiar with the term Falcon. I'm assuming it's a variant of the Dramatic fach.

  26. A soprano falcon is basically a lower lyric voice with extreme stamina in the soprano tessitura (I'm pretty sure you know that much). Their timbre should be, dark, thick and creamy in the lower regions, large, warm with a slight bight (due to the darkness) to the voice in the mid range and the upper end should be large, slicing and occasionally stringy... They have medium to large sound output and are comparable to a spinto on that front. They also deliver sound in the upper reaches of their voice in a spinto-like fashion, however it could be far more stringy by comparison.

  27. Characteristics akin to that of a Dramatic. Interesting.

  28. When they sing operatically their stringy timbre sounds very akin to that of a viola. In pop, even Arethra had a stringy kinda banjo like but stringy. A friend and I call Vanessa Amorosi the human electric guitar because that is exactly what her voice sounds like. LOL. She definitely has my favorite voice on any pop singer.

But compared to dramatic sopranos, she approaches the soprano tessitura in a strange way. A dramatic generally has this incredibly chest quality all the way up the scale. A falcon just gets infinitely bright, but not quit as chesty above E5 and combined with their stringy timbre, it leads to a characteristic screechy (but extremely pleasant) sound. The reason why is because a soprano falcon is placed like a mezzo and as a result, they approach the soprano tessitura like a mezzo would. That means they have a less chest dominated mix but an incredibly slicing voice that combined with the slight headiness, simply scalps unwary bitches. Take a look at Arethra Franklin to see my point from a soul sistah's timbre.

  29. You are such an expert! Do you have any official education on the subject?

  30. No, no, no, no, no. I'm far from an expert. I'm good with women voice types and I suck sooooo bad with men. And I took some vocal coaching, been in a few choirs and had a few recitals but nothing really impressive. All of what I know is because of extensive, extensive research and people on the internet who are extremely helpful. I am too young to have a degree in vocal pedagogy but its a dream of mine. LOL.

  31. I had a nose-bleed listening to her 'Heroes Live Forever'. In a good way :p.

She's incredible. And what an amazing contemporary sound she has on her. Love her!

  32. I’m not that much of a online reader to be honest but your blogs really
nice, keep it up! I'll go ahead and bookmark your site to come back later on. All the best
