Vocal Pluses:A well structured voice; strong from the lowest depths of the voice to the soprano heights. Demonstrates agility across all registers of the voice allowing for the production of complex melisma, and fast transitions throughout the voice. Often displaying this through the ability to replicate guitar solos (See " I Wanna Be Your Everything, Jumpin' Jack Flash, My Problem Is You"). Able to apply a raspy texture throughout the belting range with a neutral larynx and in a healthy manner. Incredible breath control allows for long phrases, sustained notes and periods of uninterrupted melisma.
The lower register carries a full, dark and heavy sound and achieved with a large quantity of freedom and ease [see Off On My Kiss]. The mid-range is capable of producing a large column of sound and sustain notes for substantial amounts of time [see Heroes Live Forever, Suns Up].
The Upper Register is the most used aspect of the voice, and is noted as the singer's signature. The notes in this range are achieved with an ease that is typically not seen in lower voice types. Showing the ability to phrase and sustain up in the sixth octave. The upper register is tinged with a "guitar-like" timbre that is not commonly heard by singers.
The head voice, while rarely used in the higher reaches, is capable of being produced with complete ease and freedom, possessing a bright and full quality.
Vocal Negatives: On occasion shows a bit of difficulty around the passagio area of the voice (D5-E5) as the notes may come out flat or tense.

I love her ,I love her,I love her.She is also capable of extreme emotional live performances(Tends to sing with her entire body) and has a very powerful voice.

ReplyDeleteFor positives I'd agree with your initial statement, however I'd add on that her lower register is weighty and dark, a very odd contrast considering she's one of the few females that can sing in the soprano tessitura. Also her mid-range carries a very full sound and a large one at that (see "Heroes Live Forever" or "Higher Ground" very surprising as most high belters typically neglect this part of their voices. And her head voice just has this very huge sound to it. In her live performance of "I Wanna Be Your Everything" she hit the E6 with so much more power than the studio version. One of the strongest 6th octave head notes I've seen from a non-classical singer.
ReplyDeleteAnd for negatives I'd say she's inconsistent above F5, sometimes it's full and resonant or sometimes it's a bit thinner in sound although sometimes it seems stylistic.
She's incredible for someone with no vocal lessons! Most people would blow out their vocal chords attempting what she does with no training at all!
@DivaDevotee Vanessa has an F2 in "Somewhere In The Real Wordl" and an F6 live, making her range exactly 4 octaves :) And all of it without the use of whistle register. She actually hasn't shown any whistle notes, and I don't she really needs them.
