Vocal Pluses: Regine Velasquez is able to reach low notes with relative ease, due in part to her good technique and understanding of her voice. The bottom notes are dark and heavy, and are connected nicely to the range meaning she can utilise them in vocal runs that start higher in the range. Regine Velasquez' midrange is noticeably lighter than the lower half of the range, but is solid and stoic, with a characterful quality that makes it identifiable as belonging to her. The Belting range is bright, pure and elastic, being able to reach an impressive B5 with the aid of mixing with the head voice.The sound can be made fuller and more resonant, without mixing, but the voice becomes less palatable as it travels up the fifth octave. The head voice is sharp, bright and punchy with a weight to it.
Regine Velasquez' low, mid and head voice can all have their timbre and tone manipulated to produce a sweeter and softer sound that has a lyrical, expressive and slightly breathy quality to it- see Fallin'.
The voice is dexterous and athletic, able to sing complex vocal runs, throughout the range, as well as to hold a note, on pitch, for impressive periods of time without problem-see Regine's cover of All By Myself.
Vocal Negatives: Notes after a E5 tend to sound like shouting, especially when not mixed or placed correctly or having vibrato applied to them . Also, Regine Velasquez' vocal styling seems to be influenced too much by western Diva's meaning she has not defined a sound of her own.

ReplyDeleteat this point, im getting confused already. some other published journals said... regine velasquez is a mezzo soprano, in contrary to the belief that she is a lyric soprano. what's really the truth? in my own opinion, her timbre, resonance, and range shows she's a L-Sop. but i need a reliable source in this matter, though.
ReplyDeleteThis is the hard thing about classifying popular singers into classical fachs, as everyone has a different opinion. Its not an exact science and to honest, shouldn't really be done because no pop singer really reaches the criteria to be judged by an operatic standard anyway so the whole thing is a little redundant.
ReplyDeleteFor example Mariah Carey calls herself an Alto where as a lot of vocal teachers/ scholars would disagree and put her in the soprano territory. SO who is right?
Vocal types are really only ever going to be conjecture unless the singers start singing opera, so trust your own judgement when deciding what classification a singer falls into. ;).
3 octaves???how come she is the asia's songbird when i found out a girl from malaysia with wider range..if i'm not mistaken she's ziana zain with 4.2 octaves..i thought she's that grest when her native people keep comparing her to international singers like mariah carey,celine dion,whitney and all...now i know the facts..she's just ordinary

I think the vocal pluses and the vocal negativity are contradicting each other. because you cannot shout those notes with a nice vibrato while sustaining it.
ReplyDelete@anoncI think her chest voice- not including when its mixed- sounds most impressive below a D5, which is what my comment refers to. Above a D5 the notes are achieved by her pushing her voice- which causes it to sound like shouting- or it's mixed with her head voice, so the sound becomes thinner and more nasal.
ReplyDeleteI will clarify and rewrite the vocal profile soon, but I'm just waiting for more positives and negative from commenters because I'm not that familiar with her music.
I don't think that Regine is yelling. It's just that her belts are stronger than the belts of most singers we know. She may not be the best singer in the planet, but her voice is probably the most formidable. Just my two cents.

In my own opinion, not to contradict to other people who posted their respective comments... For me, singers differ from each other as what the Creator designed them to be.. They shine on their own ways where they can share and use their innate talents. Regine Velasquez has already proven her worth and brought numerous and unfathomable pride to the Philippines. Shes not shouting as what other believed nor screaming...She justifies every song she sings or even make it more fascinating to listen to..
ReplyDeleteIn music, there are lots of elements to consider- Voice Quality, Tonality, Range, etc. Remember that range is only one of those elements. Range is never the basis for one to be hailed as a "great singer". Just think of it, you can have a very wide range but have a very poor sound quality in your voice. Quality over range is what matters. :)

All I can say is Regine's better.I noticed that she's struggling through the high notes, Regine can belt more effortlessly. Regine can also make her voice soft or fierce depending on the song, she can even make her voice quiver dramatically while singing, adding more emotion to the song. So if they are to fight the title of Songbird, Regine deserves it more.

Well for me that's amazing :)
ReplyDeleteThat's belting in chest voice using her genuine voice, it tends to sound like shouting because the sounds is dominantly chest but it's sustained and the resonance is maintained. that's what you call talent. that's how she does it, very powerful. if u think she's been yelling the entire 27 yrs then she could have damaged her voice at an early time. but no, listen to her latest vids, u'll know more about her voice. and u will know how to sing too! :)
