Regine Velasquez- Vocal Profile/ Range

Vocal Type: Lyric Soprano
Vocal Range: 4 Octaves 1 semiton B2-B6
Vocal Pluses: Regine Velasquez is able to reach low notes with relative ease, due in part to her good technique and understanding of her voice. The bottom notes are dark and heavy, and are connected nicely to the range meaning she can utilise them in vocal runs that start higher in the range. Regine Velasquez' midrange is noticeably lighter than the lower half of the range, but is solid and stoic, with a characterful quality that makes it identifiable as belonging to her. The Belting range is bright, pure and elastic, being able to reach an impressive B5 with the aid of mixing with the head voice. The sound can be made fuller and more resonant, without mixing, but the voice becomes less palatable as it travels up the fifth octave. The head voice is sharp, bright and punchy with a weight to it.

Regine Velasquez' low, mid and head voice can all have their timbre and tone manipulated to produce a sweeter and softer sound that has a lyrical, expressive and slightly breathy quality to it- see Fallin'.

The voice is dexterous and athletic, able to sing complex vocal runs, throughout the range, as well as to hold a note, on pitch, for impressive periods of time without problem-see Regine's cover of All By Myself.

Vocal Negatives: Notes after a E5 tend to sound like shouting, especially when not mixed or placed correctly or having vibrato applied to them . Also, Regine Velasquez' vocal styling seems to be influenced too much by western Diva's meaning she has not defined a sound of her own.

A2-I can't make it out so haven't included it- Bb2, B2, C3, C#3, D3, Eb3, E3, F3:

A selection of F5s:

C6, C#6, D6, Eb6, E6, F6, G6, G#6, B6:

  1. she is the best singer in Asia. That is why they call her the "asian songbird"

  2. it's not "Asian Songbird" It's the "Asia's Songbird." :)

  3. at this point, im getting confused already. some other published journals said... regine velasquez is a mezzo soprano, in contrary to the belief that she is a lyric soprano. what's really the truth? in my own opinion, her timbre, resonance, and range shows she's a L-Sop. but i need a reliable source in this matter, though.

  4. This is the hard thing about classifying popular singers into classical fachs, as everyone has a different opinion. Its not an exact science and to honest, shouldn't really be done because no pop singer really reaches the criteria to be judged by an operatic standard anyway so the whole thing is a little redundant.

For example Mariah Carey calls herself an Alto where as a lot of vocal teachers/ scholars would disagree and put her in the soprano territory. SO who is right?

Vocal types are really only ever going to be conjecture unless the singers start singing opera, so trust your own judgement when deciding what classification a singer falls into. ;).

  5. 3 octaves???how come she is the asia's songbird when i found out a girl from malaysia with wider range..if i'm not mistaken she's ziana zain with 4.2 octaves..i thought she's that grest when her native people keep comparing her to international singers like mariah carey, celine dion, whitney and all...now i know the facts..she's just ordinary

  6. vocal range is not the basis as to why regine velasquez was called the asia's songbird..

it's the quality of the voice that she has, the voice you listen to and compare to barbra streisand whom is the real songbird..

  7. I think the vocal pluses and the vocal negativity are contradicting each other. because you cannot shout those notes with a nice vibrato while sustaining it.

    ReplyDelete
  8. @anoncI think her chest voice- not including when its mixed- sounds most impressive below a D5, which is what my comment refers to. Above a D5 the notes are achieved by her pushing her voice- which causes it to sound like shouting- or it's mixed with her head voice, so the sound becomes thinner and more nasal.

I will clarify and rewrite the vocal profile soon, but I'm just waiting for more positives and negative from commenters because I'm not that familiar with her music.

  9. I don't think that Regine is yelling. It's just that her belts are stronger than the belts of most singers we know. She may not be the best singer in the planet, but her voice is probably the most formidable. Just my two cents.

  10. and they are much appreciated! :D

  11. She's really good with melismas too.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srzEMaTPixA

A lot of new female singers idolize her and she's the benchmark for belting in the Philippines. You might wanna check out Nina, the "Diamond Soul Siren" who's in Regine's league. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lblj3uJhtB4

  12. In my own opinion, not to contradict to other people who posted their respective comments... For me, singers differ from each other as what the Creator designed them to be.. They shine on their own ways where they can share and use their innate talents. Regine Velasquez has already proven her worth and brought numerous and unfathomable pride to the Philippines. Shes not shouting as what other believed nor screaming...She justifies every song she sings or even make it more fascinating to listen to..

  13. In music, there are lots of elements to consider- Voice Quality, Tonality, Range, etc. Remember that range is only one of those elements. Range is never the basis for one to be hailed as a "great singer". Just think of it, you can have a very wide range but have a very poor sound quality in your voice. Quality over range is what matters. :)

  14. "4 Octaves 1 semiton B2-B6" hey Diva Devotee ,where is the semiton o.o?

    ReplyDelete
  15. She's a legend and will be forever loved by Filipinos no matter what whoever comes... She is definitely a major influence to most of the young artists making their own careers out there... Our generation is blessed to have her.. For sure, a singer like her comes once in a century..

    ReplyDelete
  16. how about longest note? she's also good at it, sustaining high notes...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah. She's asia's songbird because she sings like a bird and shouting. Oh, please dont even compare this bird to world class singer. It's embarassing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No, she's yelling. There's a distinct difference between yelling and strong belting, both her and Xtina don't know that difference. Or they ignore it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Regine Velasquez has a unique voice even though she sings other western singer songs. She created her own voice that makes her different from the rest. Her higher vocals makes her distinguishable compared to any other singers. When she sings you know its Regine not anyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I commented on that somewhere else. It sounds so much like a guitar that I'd like to see the actual video. Does anyone have it?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Then it's the most beautiful yell I have ever heard. :D

    ReplyDelete
  24. High notes aren't the basis of being a good singer, mind you.

    ReplyDelete
  25. May I add effortless belting? watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWpscdrygaQ

  26. May I add effortless belting? watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWpscdrygaQ watched this Ziana Zane performance. All I can say is Regine's better.I noticed that she's struggling through the high notes, Regine can belt more effortlessly. Regine can also make her voice soft or fierce depending on the song, she can even make her voice quiver dramatically while singing, adding more emotion to the song. So if they are to fight the title of Songbird, Regine deserves it more.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't know about Regine not having a defined sound of her own, because I can recognize her voice easily.

    ReplyDelete
  28. She has been in the PHILIPPINE INDUSTRY for about 25 years PROFESSIONALLY longer than MARIAH CAREY!!! westerners??? WTF!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Actually, Mariah was a background singer before she was a singer. So she has more than her listed 22 under her belt.

In any case, years do NOT affect success or vocals. And Mimi wins in both.

  30. Regine Velasquez is hailed as Asia's Songbird because throughout Asia she have the widest vocal range and perfect pitch. She is popular throughout Asia selling 7 million units. She is praised by international stars like Brian McKnight and told her that she is the only female vocalist that can rival Celine Dion and also told her that when she needs a song Brian is ready to write one for her. Regine is reigning in Asia for 26 years now if she is SHOUTING she can't so what she's doing for the past 26 years. Her concert R15 is also hailed as THE BEST AND THE MOST SUCCESSFUL OF ASIAN ARTIST FOR THE PAST 25 years. She is the Queen of Filipino Music and also best selling artist. many other new singer came out but all of them respect the Asia's Songbird vocal prowess and look up to her. :)

  31. Yes, her voice is easily identifiable... her style, not so much.

  32. She can hit sky-high notes and even hold it for a longer period of time, that's epic. She has a good belting technique even better than mariah's. She's got the sweetest voice and so powerful, she's got the proper control and a+ breathing technique achieving a great and flawless sound. She understand her voice deeply, I think that's her edge. She sings from her heart souring up to the sky as she belt resonating Asia thus Asia's songbird. I love everything that she is. :)

  37. Well, let's just say that Regine's amazing. :) I idolize her even more after I read the sentence Notes after a E5 tend to sound like shouting, especially when not mixed or placed correctly or having vibrato applied to them, so it means that Regine is singing in full chest? Well for me that's amazing :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's belting in chest voice using her genuine voice, it tends to sound like shouting because the sounds is dominantly chest but it's sustained and the resonance is maintained. that's what you call talent. that's how she does it, very powerful. if u think she's been yelling the entire 27 yrs then she could have damaged her voice at an early time. but no, listen to her latest vids, u'll know more about her voice. and u will know how to sing too! :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. She is quite over-rated, only singing other singers material and wanting to sound like American singers, namely like Barbra Streisand.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Legrand praised her for singing Streisand's classics, was impressed even closer to saying Regine's is way better than Streisand's...

  42. Then you're far too easily impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Even better than Mariah's? Is that your opinion? Because that sure isn't fact.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well, there aren't many other Asian artists known for having great voices, but Jane Zhang from China is much better. Nicer tone, better control and technique and a more developed whistle register. Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh please, I think I prefer Charice over her, and that's saying something.

    ReplyDelete
  46. One of the greatest voices in existence. One of the greatest voices in the world. I praise her voice. 6 words: What Kind of Fool Am I!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. From what I've known she is a lyric coloratura soprano ^^

    ReplyDelete
  48. You got it wrong dude. If charice and regine would have a duet on Stage. Regine would definitely outsing her. As regine goes higher, her vocals become much stronger-able to be heard even without mic. Today, have regine and mariah sing together on one stage, i suppose mariah would walk out. Lols.

    ReplyDelete
  49. In addition, regine has a clearer tone, no matter what the range is, pitch perfect, justice is there, achievements, name it all! Regine can sing any of her renditions with much ease and less effort, i dnt think cha can do what regine can..lol, and hey, regine is prettier!! 😁😁😁

    ReplyDelete
  50. What is "justice"? And Charice has achieved more worldwide, whereas barely anyone outside of the Philippines knows who Regine is. Both are nothing more than glorified karaoke singers and neither are that pretty, not that that has anything to do with their voices.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Without a mic? She's not an opera singer - show me a video where she can sing like that without a mic? She's got nothing on Mariah, whose voice may have deteriorated over the years but in her prime Regine wouldn't be able to hold a candle to her, there's nothing special about her.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Panget ng boses nya. Saka walang sariling style, puro kopya lang sa mga western divas.

    ReplyDelete
  53. She can reach the key d6 headtone. This is illegitimate.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Out singing has got nothing to do with going higher.

Range is not very important because I have heard females with lower voices like Tina Turner, or Phyllis Hyman ousting higher singers with power and strategic Adlibs.

I like both! but my favorite Fillipina singer has always been Jaya.

    ReplyDelete
  55. is Charice a national champion? haha not. she was beaten by only a guy...

    ReplyDelete
  56. you definitely right dude.. coz mariah can only sing higher w/ too much focus and of solo performance... she try to have a duet w/ REGINE and she'll find out... have a gut to sustain for long-time singing duration...

    ReplyDelete
  57. haha... i'll go 4 REGINE. very feminine

    ReplyDelete
  58. owws... i boost that she's better than Barbra

    ReplyDelete
  59. hahaha... is there any song that has only an application of whistle??? I think that SHE cannot sing melodiously that's y she tried to have only a focus in whistling..... to have a record... REGINE, even without whistle, is able to soar up higher and higher... and take note!!! she is only the one who can do and perform that perfectly..

    ReplyDelete
  60. EFFORTLESS BELTING DUDE!!! take note of it.. regine only can do..

LMAO you filipinos are so deluded, Regine has a paper-thin voice like a whiny child prostitute, it's a tiny voice that is very annoying and childish like Jessica Simpson's. High belters like Monica Naranjo and Vanessa Amorosi as well as her asian rival SoHyang absolutely destroy her.

  67. There are far better better belters than Regine in this world - open your ears.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Honestly, Regine has one of the best voices I've ever heard. I just wish she'd refine her technique because her voice is FAR TOO GREAT to deteriorate. Her voice is on par with "the greats". All she needs is the tech. Still, I've utmost tolerance for her because as I've said plenty of times, her voice is great. Great voices inspire me, and words can't express how much I admire this woman's talent. There are very few singers whose abilities transcend their technique, thus making them an exception; Regine, for me, is that exception because as bad as her technique is, her natural prowess allows her to ascend to astronomical heights. I love this woman. In my opinion, she perhaps has one of the greatest voices of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  69. what does having 'achieved more worldwide' have to do with being better? Charice is okay but you can't say she's better than Regine because Regine is amazing

    ReplyDelete
  70. She's definitely got nothing on Mariah technically, but Regine's instrument in its entirety? Much like Carey, Regine's voice is incredible and In my honest opinion lives in parallel to Mariah's. If only her technique reflected the ridiculously great voice she possesses, she'd be leagues ahead of at LEAST 94% of the vocalists. The affinity she has is almost astronomical if you ask me. Despite her bad technique, and god it's bad lol, her voice transcends the flaws. I definitely put her up there with the greats in terms of instrument and natural ability. Not many people could trump a voice like hers, period.

    ReplyDelete
  71. wow like a "whiny child prostitute" seriously you have a distasteful vocabulary. Regine's voice is better than yours IMO. technique couldn't save your tone
