Mariah Carey has had the most number one singles on the American Billboard charts of any solo act, but with Rihanna scoring her tenth Number one with the Britney Spears featured S and M , should Carey be worried about the young upstart stealing her crown in the near future? Perhaps more worrying for Carey is that it took her till the age of 25 to score her 9th Number 1 with Fantasy where as the Barbadian singer had already scored the equivalent at the tender age of 22.

ReplyDeleteI don't know if Mariah should be worried or not, really. How much longer will people put up with Rihanna's generic dance pop? I like her music because it's catchy, but it's not deep or particularly memorable in the long term. Whereas most of Mariah's number ones are already classics: Dreamlover, Always Be My Baby, Emotions (those high notes!), We Belong Together, Hero, Fantasy (and the legendary remix), My All... I could go on.
ReplyDeleteI just don't see Rihanna having the same impact and status 20 years down the line like Mariah.
I think it is possible that Rihanna could take Mariahs spot if her run keeps going and if Mariah stops making hits. However I don't think that Rihanna's discography would ever be taken seriously. Sure she has the quantity. But her music lacks quality. Her songs are catchy and fun but they arent classics.
