Charice Pempengco- Vocal Profile/ Range




Vocal Type:Mezzo Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves 2 note C3-E6
Vocal Pluses: Charice Pempengco’s lower register is powerful and darker than the other parts of her range and is relatively easily accessed, except at the lower extremes. The mid range is solid, rounded, and smooth and she is capable of complex melisma from this point upwards.

Charice Pempengco has a strong, expansive chest voice that can reach up into the fifth octave (G5). Even at higher frequencies the belting range maintains a similar, powerful resonance to that of the lower part of the range.

She has the skill and stamina to hold upper notes for long periods of time with or without her impressively emotive vibrato.

Vocal Negatives: Charice Pempengco sometimes uses bad technique in order to retain her fuller tone at the lower and higher parts of her range; pushing her larynx down, when attempting the lower notes and pulling it up, creating a strained tone, to hit higher notes

After her debut album, Charice reverted to singing in a way that was more in line with her natural range, creating a more healthy sound.

Vocal Pluses: Strong, expansive chest voice.charice also has a nice and impressively emotive vibrato that makes her ballads very touching.her main strenghts are on her lower register,which is powerfull and darker than the other parts of her range,and also,she has a very agile voice on the mid-low range and she is capable of complex melisma easily.charice has the stamina to hold upper notes from her range(until G5) for long periods of time and keeping the same resonance she would have at her lower range.her head voice is incredibly brighter than the rest of her range.
    Vocal Negatives: she sometimes use a bad technique in order to retain her fuller tone when she goes to the deeper/higher parts of her range,thus having a great tone change between thin and weak to dark and strong,meaning she places her voice incorrectly and making a very "robotic like" voice.the higher/lower she belts,she USED TO push her larynx down/up,thus making a strained tone.her agility is retained only from mid-low range,as higher she ascends(F5 or higher) she constricts and push the tone.OBS: after her debut album,she started singing back on her natural tone,not anymore forcing her voiceim not sure if this was a good review,but yeah,i tried e-e

  5. Not to be a villain here, but I think Charice is one of the most overrated singers  I've ever known. Everyone keeps saying that Charice is the best as if there are no other ones. But that voice is a serious powerhouse.

  10. It's almost a year now when you did Charice's vocal profile that is why people are wondering if you're missing something here.
    For most of us music enthusiast, we religiously follow Charice's music career since she was first introduced here in the United States. Even though she's only 19 and has yet to reach her peak. we strongly believed that she has really grown and matured a lot as an artist.Would you mind doing her new vocal profile/range to feed our curiosity? Thank you very much.

  18. I think you should add more details in her profile because she is more than just a belter
    now.

    If you still listen to her, you will notice that she does not use improper technique in belting. Other than that, she has become a soulful singer. She can do vocal runs efortlessly using her head tones for higher notes and her chest voice for lower runs. Also, she has developed a special genre that converts pop and upbeat songs into a soulful acoustic.

    But even if she changed her genre and style, she still retained the belts, although not used all the time. She has already proven that she is capable of high belts. Now she is proving that she can do RnB/Soul style.

  20. Another singer who stretches the tract and lowers their Larynx in order to sound like The Next Whitney. Oh dear mother of Earth. Charice, however, has a great voice. That I don't understand. No, this girl is NOT a Mezzo nor is she anywhere close. Her timbre is far too light. Have you heard her E Naturals and Fs? That colour Screams Soprano, a high one. She may possibly be a Full Lyric (POSSIBLY). But make no mistake about her fach, she's no where near a Mezzo. Great voice, though. Her flexibility and stamina is incredible. And the amount of Volume she's able to produce in both the Mid & upper register is great. Not to mention, she has a great mix. Chest Dominant, I think. That's impressive. To be able to carry chest tones as high as she can. Sucks for her seeing as she abused her voice thus making it tougher for her to access the upper extremes of her voice. In her prime, she probably could've extended to the infamous 6th Octave C Natural. See, GREAT voice with awful technique. This goes to show that the voice is an Instrument & instruments require skill in order to use at a proficient and qualitative capacity.

  21. Sasuke. Well there is different types in mezzo range like in soprano range. Like lyric mezzo and dramatic mezzo. Tho in pop culture the difference is not made and therefore the singers who are lighter mezzo range are mistaked sopranos.

  22. She isn't a Mezzo, though. She lacks the timbre. When she's sung with a neutral larynx, you can hear how bright her timbre is. And her tessitura is high. Very high. That dark "colour" you think you hear artificially darkening her voice via lowering her larynx to achieve a greater, colourful tone.

  23. listen to this performance of And I Am Telling You...listen to her 5th octave notes, notably from C5 to G5, those notes sound bright but voluminous. she is definitely a light dramatic soprano (PROBABLY). and she is using a better technique here now, so we can clearly hear what voice type she is

  24. Noooooooooo, she's Lyric Soprano. She's got a decent sized voice. It certainly isn't small because she can achieve that huge sound in BOTH the middle register & upper. But her timbre? Far too bright. There're no traces of a metallic quality in her voice what so ever. Compare her to a TRUE Dramatic like Patti. You'll see there's a huge difference in EVERY aspect. She has a great voice, though. Too bad she strained it away.

  25. yeah maybe you're right, she is a lyric soprano (full maybe). but people (including me) confuse her voice type to be a dramatic soprano.


    because there was also a video on youtube of her performing the same song WITHOUT MICROPHONE, and her voice filled the entire room! those instances where her voice sounds very full, she's depressing her larynx, kind of like Christina Aguilera. and on this video I shared, on the sustained, effortless Eb5, she moved her mic away a bit, because of how loud it is, maybe that's why I could say she's a dramatic soprano.


    but yeah, i think you're right, she's a lyric soprano whose voice could fill an entire stadium.

  26. Full Lyric is debatable. One could argue that even despite the screaming, she's got a a medium to POSSIBLY big sized voice. The sound she produces is far too great for that of a smaller voice. But the timbre & tessitura? Lack of richness & metallic quality? She just couldn't be a Dramatic. There are Lyrics with big voice, though.

  27. Nope...still a soprano nonetheless. She warps and stretches her timbre quite a bit to get a lower, darker sound but under all the fluff lies a light lyric soprano. A light lyric soprano can still have a bit of depth and color to their voice. Look at Nicole Scherzinger.

  29. She isn't a Mezzo anything, Nicolet. Nothing dark or even warm about her timbre what so ever. The only way she accesses the lower register is by forcing her larynx down. With decent technique she's reached F3, which sounds clear and at ease. And again, her tessitura, much like her Larynx, is very high. She lacks the registry that a natural Mezzo has. Charice is definitely a Lyric Soprano. Great voice, though. I just wish she'd refine her technique, if it isn't already too late.

Apparently it's not all that obvious because people are still foolishly believing she's a Mezzo because she lowers her larynx to have a fuller, darker, dense tone like the "typical" Mezzo is expected to have. By doing so, this makes one's voice sound greater than it actually is (to them). When Charice's larynx is in its proper place, her natural voice colour is very bright. Her sound is highly feminine. Not only that, she lacks the weight of a Dramatic Mezzo. Her voice isn't massive. It's Light. Listen to her upper notes; Notice how that seemingly bigger, darker dense tone completely vanishes and then completely feminizes at the top end? That goes to show you the tone is coerced and unnatural. Whereas Charice does strain, at the time where her voice was a little more lenient to the abuse, she could easily access those upper 5th Octave notes constantly. She has the Tessitura of a Soprano. So now we've established she has the weight of a Lyric voice, has a high tessitura and a bright timbre - shes's a Lyric Soprano. There's no way she could be a Mezzo.


    What fools you into believing she's anything close to a Mezzo? Her faux tone? Honestly, I wish to know. It's useful to be able to distinguish a clear Mezzo from an actual Soprano. There are cases that can be quite deceiving but this certainly isn't one of them.

  32. Perhaps, within some vocal fachs, certain timbre's can be misleading and withholds particular tonal qualities akin to that of others. For example...


    1) Women:
    A Spinto- Soprano =/= A Dramatic- Mezzo Soprano?
    A Dark, Full- Lyric Mezzo Soprano =/= A Full- Lyric Contralto?
    A Dugazon- Soprano =/= A Low- Lyric Mezzo-Soprano?


    2) Men:
    A Light- Lyric Baritone =/= A Low- Lyric Tenor?
    A Heldontenor =/= A Kavalier [Spinto] Baritone?
    A Low- Lyric Baritone =/= A Lyric- Bass-Baritone?

    But how do you come to the conclusion of a Light- Lyric Soprano (Charice) sounding anything like, or close to, a Mezzo-Soprano? Seriously? LOL.

    She sounds like a mezzo with a wide range. Many mezzos are capable of reaching soprano notes and with much more power.

    Mezzos are just as capable of reaching soprano notes with much more power and weight, and to me her voice lies in the mid range with the ability and huge range to take it up to the soprano high with weight, and power. Her pushing her larynx did not change her range only her her tone, but she is still in within mezzo range.


    Her voice lies in the mid range with solid and rounded pallet, abilities to go higher than the norm is based on sometimes natural ability and or training.


    If she is classified soprano, then she would then be classified a coloratura soprano, not lyric with her ability to go to a mezzo voice, Classifying her as a lyric soprano just does not make sense.


    lyric sopranos= Sarah Brightman. Not Charice.


    Her soprano notes are very powerful and solid, she does not reach the highs with easily distinguished lyric quality, she belts and or mixes to reach them and or sometimes head voice. That is all qualities of a trained and wide ranged mezzo.

  35. Nicolet, she is Lyric- Soprano. Perhaps a Light- Lyric but a Lyric nonetheless.

    A) She never sings within a tessitura consistent with that of Mezzo's. Beyonce is a fine example of a Mezzo with both the highest tessitura & timbre there possibly is within that fach and, even then, Charice does not sound anything like her in regards to tonal production. The register transitions for a Mezzo usually occur at E or F - just above Middle C - and the E or F - one octave above that - and Charice's voice doesn't follow this suit at all. Today, we could argue that she is indefinitely placed like a High- Mezzo, just as Mariah Carey is, but that doesn't make neither of them Mezzo's.

    B) A Lyric- Mezzo Soprano's instrument is, generally speaking, a Lyric- Soprano's instrument but placed within a much lower region thus the resulting sound is less piercing, carries a darker/richer quality and has a much bolder weight capacity attached to it. Charice's voice becomes exceedingly bright above E/F Natural - regardless of whether or not she is able to maintain stamina within her upper register, which she has thoroughly exhibted in the past, is completely void; the brightness that beholds her voice within this area is all too clear for even Light- Lyric Mezzo standards. See: Barbra Streisand. Many Mezzo's can sing & vocalize as high as a Soprano but they cannot handle the repetition of the upper notes and Charice's voice, generally, glides around the F5 - A5 tier with supreme ease.

    C) Her overall sound is exactly feminine. Celine Dion is an example of a Full- Lyric Soprano of whom has a strong & powerful mid- region but that doesn't make her a Mezzo- Soprano because it still possesses a youthful quality; she doesn't have a dark nor heavy chest voice and cannot resonate any lower than a solid E3, just like Charice.

  41. Guessing? I'm not guessing, I'm making an ACCURATE, theoretical observation. One must be cognoscente of the fachs nature in order to truly gauge them accordingly. From what I know and understand, Charice's characteristics in no way, shape or form align harmoniously with the distinct characteristics of a true Mezzo voice. Yes, you are correct that Mezzos possess the capability of reaching "Soprano" notes. Hello, ANASTACIA. But you're able to differentiate a voice like that from a true Soprano primarily because her vocal qualities are undeniable. Her weight is VERY massive. Her timbre is SUPER dark and lacks the super feminine sound a true Soprano has. Whereas she can belt high because of her excellent technique and mixing abilities, her tessitura quite naturally is low. Not only that, her lower register is developed and supported and she posses a rich sound. There's nothing bright, high or light about her voice.


    Charice's voice isn't dark. She LOWERS her larynx. And there are times she sings in her NATURAL voice and in no way is it massively heavy or dark. And her tessitura? It's VERY high. Her timbre is extremely feminine and bright. Mezzos don't have extremely bright/feminine timbres, light weight and high tessituras in conjunction. If they have any of those qualities, it's one or the other, not all. If they did have all, they;re unquestionably Sopranos. Charice has all of these qualities, so theoretically/objectively, she's a Soprano.


    What makes her a Lyric voice? Simple, Lyrics tend to have the most resonance in their upper register, comfort and strength. Essentially they bloom the higher they go, which Charice's does. She DOES have a Chest Dominant mix. It's not weight that's obstructing people from accurately determining the true nature of her mix. It is without question Chest Dominant. Some may say that having an entirely chest dominant sound makes you a Mezzo but that isn't true. There are a lot of Sopranos who possess mixes like that. Nicolet, Charice is a Lyric Soprano. She's no one's Mezz/Dramatic but yours. And if you STILL want to believe she's anything other than a Soprano then that's your prerogative. Let that be so, but know that she is objectively speaking a Lyric Soprano by the standards of Pedagogy and fach nature.

  44. IKR. Being a dramatic is not all that and a cup of kool-aid. Sure you have ungodly volume but you have to work extra hard for agility and your tone could be an acquired taste. Not to say I prefer lyrics over dramatics but each voice type has its own unique positives and I get a little riled when people have to make a hefty sounding lyric voice out to be a dramatic of any kind. And IMHO, there ain't nothing better then either a stringy guitar-like lyric voice (Similar to Vanessa Amorosi) or one of those piercing, trumpet like lyrics (Maybe Celine but Beyonce's brassy ass attack style is the first that comes to mind LOL).

  45. Totally a lost cause, don't even bother lol And yeah, why does eveyone seem to hate being on the lyric or in the higher line? Lyric Sopranos and Tenors are by far my favourite kind of singers to listen to. Even if they naturally have smaller voices, many of them can sing their butts off with proper technique (Lea Michele for example) and I totally enjoy hearing that lightness in their lower extremes.   46. Right? All I care about really is the sound and how well they're able to manipulate it to the point it's enjoyable and inducing. I don't know if I have a favourite fach, though. It's hard for me to decide. I know my favourite singer is a Lyric. My favourite male singer...I have too many lol I think Spintos are pretty interesting types seeing as they can do practically anything, I believe. And ughh, don't even bring up Beyonce's voice....just no! lol

    I'm fond of spintos too but Vanessa Amorosi's voice is vocal perfection as far as women go. That guitar like upper chest just makes me wanna go straight but well all know that shit ain't gonna happen.

  49. I don't really dislike her to be honest lol I actually enjoy a few of her songs, namely Irreplaceable, Smash Into You and Love On Top. Ego is decent. Occasionally I'll have tolerance for Crazy in Love. Gotta admit, they are my guilty pleasures. They're freaking catchy as hell! lol And Love on Top??? WHEW, sadly, that IS my go-to jam. I mean, when I need to warm up my voice, THAT'S that song I sing AND It's so damn FUN!!!! lol It'll definitely open up my voice for the day. I do like her as well as her music. The Voice, though. Just, no lol But to her music, well those 4 songs specifically, hell yes. And to her??? Bruh, I'll gladly be her beautiful nightmare any day! ;D

  51. I've been listening to her 5th album quite a bit and I like how low her voice is on it but she's sooooo hallow. LOL. Like her middle and lower register, though tecnically sound, is hallow in tone and her upper register is very bright and squeaky so I see the issue you have with her voice. I care, Start Over, Love on Top...those are my shits!!!!


    Love on Top is usually the struggle for me... It took me a long, long, long time for me to be able to sing that song properly. I generally carry up too much weight and close up when I get pass F#4 on that song. LOL...

  54. Words can't express how I feel for Demi. I want to say disappointed but not quite. It's just, she's going down the wrong path as an artist. Honestly, at one point I was questioning whether or not I can see Demi as a singer in the future. Longevity, ehh. This new album in my honest opinion was awful. It was corny, it wasn't unique and it became very practical. There are a few songs that I actually heard DEMI in, but that was it. The rest of the album was this entirely different person. Whenever I become further upset with Demi I find myself listening to her 1st album to remind me that I don't actually hate her and why I fell in love with her initially.


    Demi flourishes with her NATURAL tone, not this newer premature tone she's trying feign. Soprano or not that isn't her best area, it never has been and I'm willing to bet that it never will be. Yes, I believe she should mold her craft so that she's secure in all regions of her voice as that's what a singer should do seeing as that's their instrument. However, I also think she should be not just strategic but intelligent with her vocal choices as well. She needs to stop trying to squeeze out upper belts to impress people. She needs to quit over singing and doing those sloppy ass runs that make no sense. Demi's a POWER belter, and the mid register is where her voice shines. As of late, it's been sacrificed to satiate her faux tone and upper register. That to me isn't cool because neither of those things are even good lol

  55. Precisely, and it's just that the voice is commonplace (to me) and in no way wows me. It never could. She just doesn't have "it" if you know what I mean. That's personally how I feel, but her music is definitely wassup. Well, I personally wouldn't say wassup, but happenin' (for now), if that makes sense lol


    I mean, it's a very oppressive song in that it forces you to almost not breathe lol Control is a prerequisite for the song as well as support. And yes, you must have a balanced scale. If you're carrying too much weight and it's overlapping then of course the song is going to be a struggle lol BUT, that's understandable. It's not exactly the easiest song to sing.

  56. I love the song but most of the time I just sing the first verse and then the chorus with the climax at the end rather than two choruses and the climax because ain't no body got canary lungs.... LOL.


    The easiest part is when I get above A4 because beyond that, it gets easier to maintain an open throat. The EEEEE vowels also are easy when she sings "neeeed". The hard part for me is when I get to the "oooh ooooh come on baby, you put my love on top, top, top." That is when I go flat LOL....


    And you need to let me listen to your voice! I'm dying to get a sample!
