Vocal news: Adele cancels shows to recuperate her voice and Christina Aguilera FINALLY decides to take vocal lessons, a decade into her career.

Vocal news from two of our Divas today: one piece great, and one  piece bad, but both resulting in our singers going back to vocal school to brush up on their technique.

Firstly we look to Christina Aguilera for the good, no GREAT news that FINALLY, allegedly mind, she has enlisted a vocal coach- Seth Riggs -to tame that unwiedly bastion that is her voice! I can only drool at the thought of what some proper training and instruction will do for her. It may just make that "voice of a generation" title her fans so proudly throw about finally ring with some truth, because as she is, with technique that bad, it is both undeserving and a sad indictment on my generation of singers for her to be called that yet.

I just hope Christina Aguilera enters the process willing to put to bed some of her bad techniques, and to either fortify the extremes of her voice-which is apparently what the plan is- or if that's not possible, to refrain from going there at all.  Having a smaller range does not make you any less of a singer Christina, please accept this fact- Watch this performance to see what I mean. Some would argue that those traits make Christina Aguilera what she is, but I say they have endured for too long, and to the dentriment of the voice, so please either support them with good technique or put them to rest!

Now the bad news: Adele has had to cancel all her upcoming American shows due to the poorly state of her voice. Anyone following Adele's performances over the last few months wouldn't be entirely shocked by this revelation, but it's still sad that its come to this. Her VMA performance last month showed textural changes to the voice, as well as what seemed like a decline in the stamina, whereas her most recent showing, in London, featured a raspier tone-never a good sign- that Adele acknowledged and apologised for.

I can only guess that the rapid decline of her voice, compared to other singers who have bad technique but haven't suffered such dramatic effects, must have stemmed from a combination of  factors such as bad technique, smoking and sickness, all being exasperated by the amount of performances, travelling and touring she's been called on to do with this album. In a statement on her site a clearly upset Adele wrote about her vocal woes and her sorrow for cancelling shows but, more encouragingly, also of her plans to stop this from happening in the future- read below. The positive that comes from this whole horrible situation is that Adele is going to seek professional help to fix, but more importantly, insure the preservation of her voice. Hopefully we see the return of  a stronger, and more resilient voice after her "vocal rehab". Adele's full statement read:
Guys, im heartbroken and worried to tell you that yet again im experiencing problems with my voice. its ridiculous i know! i cant believe it myself. i follow all the advice im given and stick to regimes, rules and practices to the best of my ability but it seems to simply not be enough. i want you to know the full story about my voice troubles so bare with me in this long blog. i first started having trouble with my voice back in january, it was weakened by a bout of flu from december and never got its complete strength back before i started my UK and European promotional tour, so it just got weaker and weaker until it eventually “broke” as i say. i didnt realise at the time, cause id never had anything wrong with my voice, ever. but id also never sung as much as i was at the time it went. i was diagnosed with laryngitis and ordered to rest intensely for 10 days, and i recovered and went on to do a show in london and a month long promo tour in the U.S and also the brit awards without any hiccups. the whole time i stuck to a strict regime of numerous diets, steaming, vocal rest and vocal warm ups. which is very necessary but insanely grim. After a bit of time off I embarked on my european and UK tours at the end of march and finished at the end of april and everything seemed fine.

in may i went on tour in the U.S, i was in minneapolis which was about half way through the tour. i made a skype call in the morning on the day of the show and during it my voice suddenly switched off like a light! it was literally as if someone pulled a curtain over my throat. i knew something was wrong and panicked but convinced myself id be fine. i got to soundcheck and knew immediately i couldnt perform and with doctors advice cancelled the show. i was mortified and distraught but stubbornly insisted wewe go to denver for the following day, i did the show even though in the back of mind i knew it wasnt the right thing to do. and during it i felt, what i can only describe as something ripping in my throat. but adrenalin kicked in and i was too embarrassed to not finish the show. I was sent to LA to rest and get another opinion. this time i was diagnosed with a hemorrhage. which is like a black eye on the vocal chord, it was incredibly tender and dangerous if i was to continue to sing through it. i was ordered to rest, so i flew home and did for a month. then slowly i started fulfilling my commitments. i did a show in london at the itunes festival and then went on to complete the first leg of the rescheduled US shows and perform at the VMAS which were all a blinding success.
however when i got home and prepared to start my UK tour in september i developed a respiratory and chest infection which had nothing to do with any of my voice problems from before but still forced me to cancel 6 shows and a performance at the mercury awards. i was stuffed full of antibiotics, had some time to rest and in the end managed to do 9 shows of the 15. After them and once back home my voice yet again went. mid conversation and it just switched off! i have a hemorrhage again and it is paramount that i rest and therefore wont be able to come and do these already rescheduled U.S shows which are due to start this friday in atlantic city.

the fact is i have never been able to fully recover from any of the problems that ive had and then continue to rest even once im recovered, because of my touring commitments. ive been offered the chance to not tour at all to save anything like this from happening again, but i simply hate letting you down. although now im having to let you down once again through no fault of my own really. if i continue to pick up everything before i have properly conquered these problems and nipped them in the bud. i will be totally and utterly fucked. singing is literally my life, its my hobbie, my love, my freedom and now my job. I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or i risk damaging my voice forever. i have great confidence in believing you know how much this upsets me, how seriously i take it and how truly devastated and annoyed i am by this. wanting to do something so bad and not being able to is the most frustrating thing as im sure you know! my voice is weak and i need to build it back up. I’m gonna be starting up vocal rehab as soon as, and start building my over all stamina in my voice, body and mind. i will be back and im gonna smash the ball out the park once im touring again. i apologise from the bottom of my heart, sincerely i do. i know its not only disappointing because of the show, but its plane tickets, hotel bookings, birthdays, anniversaries and time wasted. but please have faith in me that this is the only thing i can do to make sure i can always sing and always make music for you to the best of my ability. truly yours and yours only forever, adele xx

  1. A smart move for someone like Christina to prevent her bad technique from taking its toll on her soulful voice!

As for Adele, she need not explain. Her fans will understand that and will continue to have confidence in her.

  2. I'm quite excited to see if hes already been working with her and thus if we'll be able to hear the difference when she performs at the Michael Jackson concert this weekend. Exciting stuff!! Totally agree with you about the mixing, hope she sorts that out.

  3. I saw a little bit, looked a bit cheap and boring. Though to be fair i only watched the first 20 seconds. Any good?

  4. Haha, I didn't think it was good at all, didn't serve the song well, trying too hard, anyway, I seemed to be the of the only ones who thought that, though. Everyone else really likes it.

  5. You're welcome. Oh yeah, have you seen the video for "Someone Like You"?

  6. BTW I agree about Christina - her tone is unique, amazing...even if she does have to stick to a smaller range, it won't do her career any harm - Amy Winehouse's range was very small in comparison, but everyone loved her songs and her voice.

  7. I KNEW Christina would end up with Seth Riggs! He will sort her right out, the man's teaching style is awesome, even if he's getting on a bit now. I hope she can put the Diva to one side, as by all accounts he often tells you "you are doing everything wrong" in the first lesson! With time and training it shouldn't affect her range too much, he will teach her to still hit those belt notes but not in chest voice but mix, and not to try and take so much weight up there.

As for Adele, poor lamb, it's no surprise as we were saying just a few weeks ago, but she needs to rest it. I had to sing with laryngitis last year and I've permanently damaged my voice on one particular note. With a lot of training it's got a lot better, but it's never completely gone back to the way it was.

  8. Hey Hannah! I would think it would be more noticeable in her live performances, but If this training helps her to expand her range then I'm sure it'll be something most fans would be noticing and screaming from the rooftops.

Thanks for the comments about "vocal news". If I can find news about voices, of if people send me links, then its something I'd love to keep doing.

  9. Quoting peaches_nt from the Adele vocal profile post: "Hi everyone, I wanted to add this that I found. She is a voice expert and speech pathologist I believe and has this to say about Adele's voice:http://blog.voicewize.com/2011..."

  10. Do you think the common person would notice the improvements in Christina's voice after training?

I'm glad Adele's taking time off to properly rest her voice because like she said, it's going to be permanently damaged.

By the way, I like the idea of a "vocal news" article. Looking forward to the next one!
