Review: Alexandra Burke ‘Let It Go’

2008 X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke seems intent on becoming the Rihanna dance diva of the United Kingdom with her second album, HeartBreak On Hold, if its first single Elephant, and, just released, follow-up Let It Go are indicative of what to expect from it. Not a move I'm thrilled with, it has to be said.

Let It Go is giving us more synths, more chanty/shouty choruses, and,of course, a dub-step breakdown- all things that seem to be a prerequisite of getting radio play these days. But its all kept light and breezy with a production that's weighted more towards the treble than the bass, giving Let It Go a sound that is perfectly suited for summer. Emotionally, however, it rings hollow, despite the "inspiring" angle of the lyrics.

For something to be this generic and get away with it, it needs something special about it: and that "something" should have been Alexandra Burke's voice. If she had given the vocal on Let It Go even a drop of the life/soul/edge that was demonstrated week after week on the X-Factor it would have lifted the song tremendously. Instead, we have a lifeless, robotic delivery that sounds more like that of a session singer providing a map of the melody, and plenty of creative space, for another artist to come and inject their own individuality if they were to pick the track up.

At 23 Alexandra Burke is a young lass so its not hard to understand why she would want to keep her music youthful and thus gear her sound to that of the club. But for someone who was around to hear what the 90's dance scene produced- to which this borrows heavily from- Let It Go falls very flat in comparison...It's still better than Elephant, though.

Rating:D+

Let It Go released on  the 27th of May
HeartBreak On Hold released on the 4th of June

  1. She has certainly shot way off target yet again, she won a singing competition for the calibur of her voice being so great and this is what she delivers us??

It's no stranger I am totally and utterly bored outta my tits with this sound but it annoys me even more when someone like Alexandra who actually has superb vocal talent wastes herself on this, hardly the material to crack America like she wanted to either!

I would rather she did some kind of acoustic or even pop-rock stuff, I think it would be a surprising and refreshing route for someone of her talents, rather than wasting herself following the now tedious herd...!

    Rant over! Lol

  2. I don't know that she's ever really done anything worthy of her talents really. 'Bad Boys' was alright but it was quite forgettable, not a classic song like 'Bleeding Love'. Still, she's done a lot better than Michelle McManus, Leon Jackson etc.

  3. 1 million % agree, I just wish she would find some decent producers (someone whom is actually a gifted craftsman of song)!

It seems that getting to number 1 is more important than that of what they acually put out there!

  5. It's definitely better than "Elephant" but it's still garbage though.

I can't wait for you to review this album, haha!

  6. I guess it just goes to show that just because you have a great voice, doesn't mean your an artist.

I'm tried of everyone selling out too!

  8. Indeed, its anything to stay in the picture, to be honest I was gobsmacked when Elephant managed to claw anywhere near No 3 as it did, I thought people really would dislike it and that would be that, unfortunately though there is still a big enough market for this kind of sonic cruelty....

  11. Ugh, I know! I was hoping that making a useless club track would backfire and fail on the charts but I guess anyone will buy that stuff.

  13. But what can she do? Syco initally didn;t put much work in, so she had to do it herself. She also has to sell. She is great on ballads, but people arent here for that. The only one to sell well on ballads is Adele. Her voice is amazing, but everything she sings limits her vocally. Oh and with Elephant it would've been bigger but radio wouldn't play it (or simply the 2 big stations). She's going for soul anthen influenced material, so it makes sense (this sounds like Robin S). I wouldn't say she's trying to be Rihanna. And it's what she likes to do so we gonna have to deal with it.

  14. I want to see her move into a completely different direction and record an album full of covers of Cockney songs. To hear her segueway from 'Any Old Iron' to 'My old man's a dustman' would be a dream come true.
