Review: Toni Braxton "I Heart You"

toni braxton 2012 I heart u video

Surprisingly slow to capitalise on the the success of the hit show she and her family star in, the eldest, and most successful sister, Toni Braxton, returns with new single I Heart You.

Hearing the song about a month back I wasn't overly impressed. Despite aiming for the club, the production was a little limp and lifeless to really grab, and the vocals weren't anything exceptional. We all know Toni Braxton can really sing, but here she was delivering the vocals like it was a ballad instead of a club track! Everything about this song needed to be lifted and energised. I do like the build up in the middle and the following Christina Aguileraesque vocal run that follows it, but I think this song would have worked with more fire or, failing that, at a slower tempo.

The video for I Heart You, isn't up to much either. Unfurnished sets, awful hair, a recession-special budget and a male dance troupe that looks like it had been assembled off of the street, given matching jackets and told to dance with the promise of a hot meal and shelter, are only some of its many issues. I'm genuinely surprised the director, Billie Woodruff, was so eager to attach his name to the project in such a prominent way as the opening credit. If it was me I would have laundered that cheque, so as to avoid any paper trail, and from then on denied any involvement with it!

Still, great to have Toni Braxton and her contralto tones back!

  4. Its not great, right. Just read she wrote, produced it...not sure if that means it deserves a better grade.

  5. That's certainly admirable but I don't think it deserves a better grade. I do have to say though that this song sounds better than a lot of recent dance songs, in my opinion *cough*Jennifer Lopez- Dance Again*cough*.

  8. I love me a but of Toni, I think for a dance track this is not too bad! I like the filthy beat to it!

Personally on the whole though I prefer her gentle down tempo stuff! Nothing liek 'your makin me high' or the funkiness of 'He wasn't man enough'

But you are totally right DD 'that' contralto has been sorely missed! Even although I still have a good old fix of 'Yesterday', 'How can an Angel' ect ect every now and again! YET again thanks for bringing more diva greatness to ou attention! :)

I like the song, the video is cheap which is unfortunate because I like her. Trina's song is catchier "Party Or Go Home".

  18. Toni Braxton's "I heart you" is #2 on Billboards. Guess you were wrong...AGAIN. Some of you music critics need to get another job. You sound like that idiot back in '96 that said "unbreak my heart" was the worst song on her album. You and he should get together and talk about what it's like to feel stupid

  19. thanks for that. Would you mind saying which chart she's number 2 on. Sure ain't the main singles chart and the fact you didn't mention it shows you are pressed to some extent. FYI I am a Toni Braxton fan and someone who has ALL of her albums. I don't want another "unbreak my heart", I just want a decent song!

  20. Well it's nice to know her departure from her wonderful past music with this sellout single has paid off for her.

Also how was he wrong? He never said it would fail, he said he wasn't fond of it. You're calling him an idiot yet you're the one who is drawing statements from statements that weren't there.

Learning a bit of respect wouldn't hurt either, coming out swinging with insults for no reason because someone expressed their opinion screams of a lack of respect towards others.

  21. It's #3 on the Dance/Club chart, I don't think it's even on the main billboard chart to be honest...
