Jessie J being Sued For Copyright Infringement!

Oh dear, looks like Jessie J is being sued for copyright infringement. The song in question is her second UK number one hit-and no favourite of mine- 2011's Domino.

The song sure did remind me a lot of Katy Perry's Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) when it was released, but as it was produced and written by the same people- notably Dr. Luke- it couldn't really be deemed plagiarism or infringment. More sloppy seconds, if you will.

However, things have heated up now, with American singer Will Loomis, claiming that the hit single borrows heavily from the song Bright Red Chords he released in 2009 with group Loomis and the Lusts. As a result of the claimed infringement Loomis is seeking at least $150,000 (£96,000) in damages.

Is this a case of a relatively unknown courting publicity by attacking a bigger fish, or do you think Mr Loomis is right to bring his concerns to trial? Take a listen, vote, and let me know what you think in the comment section below.

  2. I'd say Loomis can start spending the money. And Dr Luke is. I guess. not so much a general practitioner but more like a "specialist" as he seems to be writing the same tune in slightly different varieties.

  3. Errr...the songs are just WAYY too similar. The first part and the chord progression are very alike. Even the lyrics. Wow . Never thought Jessie j would do this 😣💔😢

  4. If its not Dr Luke, its Guetta ect ect that just recycle not only their own stuff but that of others too, I checked out the charts the other day and wanted to string myself up! Its getting worse!

This situation by no means surprises me...

  5. I agree, his work is starting to get tiresome! I did love his earlier works but as you say its just the same sound and style, I guess the inspiration runs dry for some quickly...

  6. this worries me because this is jessie's first really big hit and it might make a dent in her rep - she needs to work with different producers - leave Dr. generic with katy perry jess

  7. What can I say? I'm not astounded nor insulted by this lawsuit. Pop music generally borrows heavily from itself and other genres repeatedly. I'm just confused as to how this is getting a lawsuit when there are other artists who outright steal from others without a peep coming out of the creator.

  8. Domino sounds more like TGIF than Bright Red Chords, but not overbearingly so. If anyone had a case here it would be Katy. I'm also surprised that Loomis is only asking for $150,000 with regards to the music industry that really isn't a lot.

    Domino > TGIF

  9. What's really unfortunate is that Jessie J will come out of this looking like a thief when it wasn't even her fault. Dr. Luke is constantly stealing and recycling old beats from himself and other people and he does nothing but make the artists he works with look bad.

But what's even more interesting is that if this were another popstar, whom I won't mention, everyone and their mother would be down their throat claiming they're a scam artist and reductive.

  10. Probably because this is Jessies first "offense" as a singer whereas an unnamed other has many more with one piece of work very similar to a legendary song (which This doesn't appear to be).

  11. Dude, as the one most vocal about that "other"singer...you will notice I most certainly stated this tune is clearly stolen and by someone being repetitive at that..Soon as Jessie J starts stealing another person's every career aspect... you can be sure I will be equally vocal about her being reductive. But right now all we know is that this Dr Luke is a thief and boring. Jessie J is clearly nobody but Jessie J.

  12. I can't hear any Domino in that song! Not one bit! Its nowhere close. Domino is such a cleverly written song! Must get my ears checked!

  13. Speaking of copying and pasting a song from one artist to another its not as bad as the Kelly Clarkson 'Already Gone' and Beyonce 'Halo' situation caused by Ryan Tedder....

  14. Oh Gosh, that whole fiasco could have been avoided if Kelly's label listened to her and released "Cry" instead.

  15. Agree 1 million %. They should have, they were foolish and tried to do what they thought 'was in'

Not only is Cry a far superior song in terms of production and arrangement but also vocally, she sounded far too robotic on Already Gone and there was at least a genuine sentiment behind Cry.

For me AG was only acceptable because Kelly was singing it lol if it had been anyone else it would have been skipped everytime for me.

  16. I agree, not only was Cry a better vocal, it also was received better by the critics.

Yeah, Already Gone (at least in studio, live it's much more heartfelt) seemed to just go through the motions of being sentimental, rather than actually being sentimental.

Same, honestly if any one had come out with that song I'd have lost interest. Kelly's voice is the only thing that makes it listenable in my opinion, the production was really cluttered and too much on that song in my opinion.

  19. As to Jessie J and Katy P possibly being too much alike on some song, I have to listen first, but I must immediately blab that, the first time I heard of this particular British songstress, J J was performing a supposed hit of hers which sounded like an utter rip off of the melody of Alicia Keys mega-hit No One. The resemblance was so striking to my ear that I wondered fervently whether there was not some legal dispute regarding it. I was personally quite perturbed, since No One was the feat which solidified my devotion to the beautiful, silver-throated Ms. Keys. I wish I could remember the J J song, title and details right now, but, unfortunately, I would have to do a tad of research on YouTube to recreate the experience. Perhaps, someone else knows what I am talking about. Or, I will take some time, and make some effort, and return with some back up to my question about this.
