[Video Review] Brandy: "Put It Down"

brandy chris brown hug

Is anybody checking for Brandy anymore? The reason I ask is because her posts seem to get the lowest views for this site; which is odd considering some (her fans) call her the "Vocal Bible". Anyway, for those still interested, the singer has released the video (finally) for single Put It Down [Review here].

I was wondering why it was taking so long for this video to drop; the single debuted at the start of May, and the video was filmed at the start of following month. However, having just watched this awkward affair, I bet the delay was due to a desperate editor/ director fervently trying  to stitch together a half decent showing from a bunch of bad takes.

I really wish Brandy had contained her excitement and waited till she'd seen the finished product before she made this comment:
I wish I could tell you who’s directing it......it’s going to epic, which is great because I haven’t had [an epic video in a] while and it’ll be my first video [as a solo artist] in four years. Can’t wait till it’s out!!!"
The time taken to create this (bad) tribute to Beyonce's performance style, as well as that premature statement with the multiple use of the word "epic", only heightened the expectations for the video. Unfortunately, it delivers in all the wrong ways, and makes me think Brandy might need to go back to the drawing board if her upcoming album, Two Eleven, contains more of this "feisty" new persona because she doesn't quite pull it off convincingly here.

  1. Wow! That was just so.........generic. No wonder few are interested in this Brandy.

  2. I LOVE BRANDY! Which is odd that I haven't been keeping up with her. I do agree with Opie it is generic, and if this wasn't with a video I would've mistook this for a Keri Hilson or Kelly Roland single. I suppose Brandy is just trying to regain some popularity with this. I hope she does well :c

  3. I just can't get behind collaborations with Chris Brown. I'm still not over the wife beating incident and he's made some homophobic remarks in the past.

  4. Yeah, I kept thinking 'Beyonce' throughout the entire video too. But not in a good way. The song is good though.

  5. I know, he's on just about everyone's songs now.

  6. Maybe everybody realizes some people can just make a person forget himself in a way no other can or will do? And this is not the 1950-ies. Surely we moved on enough to know any woman can be as nasty and aggressive as any man

I read the transcript of what supposedly happened in that car and far as I can tell...she was far from the innocent victim. She pushed his buttons and continued to do so when she had every opportunity to stop and/or get out of the car. Let's face it, Rhianna is a bitch who thrives on pissing people off. She reaped, she sowed and unless Brown beats another woman..I personally am going to go with that having been the case.

  7. Just because you don't like Rihanna, she deserved to be beat so severely to the point where she had to be hospitalized? (I know you have not explicitly stated this but this is what I'm gathering from your comment- I could be wrong) I don't like her either and even if she did things to Brown in the car (I read the same police report) it doesn't condone what he did. And of course a woman can be just as nasty and aggressive as a man; I'm all for men defending themselves if they are attacked by women but I don't feel like this was the case. Even if we read the police report a thousand times, we still weren't there so we'll never really know. Maybe if that had been your sister, aunt, mom, or daughter you would feel different.

Even if the Rihanna incident didn't happen, he's still overexposed at the moment (which is what I was referring to). He doesn't even contribute that much to the songs he's on.

  8. Well I don't know about the overexposure since if you had not mentioned him, I wouldn't have known he was in any way involved with this song.

Like I said, we are not in the fifties and I don't subscribe to blindly always casting the male as the big evil one in these situations. I wouldn't feel any different if it had been me. I know I have been there in fights with males where I knew, if I continue to push him, he's going to hit me. And rightly so.
I decided to not allow it to escalate that far. Which is absolutely something Brown should have done too ( and he tried actually by trying to get her to leave his car) but so should Rhianna and to me they seem equally guilty.
To keep mentioning what a bad guy Brown is every time he is involved in something but not when Rhianna is, seems to me a silly, unrealistic and unfair situation.

And you are correct..I intensely dislike Rhianna...exactly because of this and her other exploits into nastiness and general hypocrisy.
Fact that she lacks the talent to warrant her success doesn't help much then either.

  9. How would you not have known if he was involved in the song without me mentioning him (which I actually didn't first) when he's in the picture on this post, in the video, and has his own verse in the song?

I agree with you. I don't automatically assume the guy is evil. My stepmom has been badly beaten by past boyfriends and even she admits that she did things to provoke them.

It's funny how you mention that I am young and that people haven't had a chance to get under my skin. That was true up until a few months ago (which is part of the reason I haven't been able to get on this site). So I'd say you're right about that. I personally don't have a bad temper, though.

I understand how you feel about Brown and how most people feel like, 'forgive and move on' which I'm all for but I don't think he's shown that he's reformed yet. I mean, twitter rants, bar fights, destroying the Good Morning America dressing room...Anyway, I don't really pay much attention to Brown. If people wanna buy his records, cool. I'm not (even though I don't buy anyone's records, haha).

  10. I can't tell you how disappointed I am in Brandy. I always appreciated her as being distinct and unique in both her vocals and look/style, so for her to come with something so generic is a major let down. This is a throwaway song that could be done by any other R&B artist right now. It doesn't showcase what makes Brandy unique and an artist. I believe she uses her voice as an instrument; her harmonies and vocal arrangements are unlike any other, but you wouldn't be able to tell by this piece of shit song. It's hard to believe that this is the same person who released the masterpiece that was Afrodisiac. After Human flopped and Brandy denounced it, blaming Rodmey Jerkins for not giving her his all, it seems as though she no longer knows what direction to take musically. Despite Human having it's flaws, it was still a solid record that I enjoyed. Right now, I'm not checking for Brandy at all, and I have lowered all of my expectations for her new album. All I can hope for is that Frank Ocean comes correct with the songs he's worked on for her new album.

  11. Didn't know Frank Ocean is supposed to be on her new album...he'll surely deliver.

  12. I think he's only featured as a songwriter maybe a producer, I'm not sure. He's worked with her before

  13. On her album Human he wrote the song 1st and Love for her and the outcome was great, so I have high hopes for whatever songs he has written for her this time.

  14. LOL he wasn't mentioned in the review and besides not really looking at pictures of people I have no interest in, I anyway wouldn't recognize Brown or his voice if you brought him to me on a silver platter surrounded by watercress. ;)
And the song was so uninteresting I didn't listen to the end tbh.

I really don't care about the guy or his music. I just get annoyed with the double standard. I am not so much saying forgive and forget. More like I'm not ready to judge him.

btw I meant hot temper. Not bad temper. As far as I know those are different aren't they? Isn't the first someone hot headed and the other a more permanent unpleasantness of character? Least that's how I always used the expressions.

  15. He's a great songwriter and his album, Channel Orange, was awesome. So I'll have to check these songs that he's featured on out.

  16. Well I hope my comment didn't present any double standard because I can't stand that either.

I didn't get the hot/bad temper thing. I've never really thought of there being a difference. Thanks for explaining, though.

  17. I wouldn't know if in your case your comment represent a double standard for sure but it did sound like that to me.

That was of course just explaining how I use it.Didn't know for sure and was hoping you would know.
But I just now looked it up and it seems there IS a difference between the two.

  18. Again another spot on review DD. I really do love Brandy and most of the work she has dropped in her career, that voice being the stand point for most of it but this is quite simply put just meh. It's nothing to do with Chris' involvement (even though I intensely dislike him lol), its just that its so sub standard for her. Most of the trailer singles she has done have been of a fantastic standard, such as 'Right Here (Departed)' and 'What about us' but yeh I am not feeling this, maybe it will grow but to be honest I wont go out of my way, I have far too much music to be concentrating on right now lol

  19. And a new song drops, a far superior one to this!!! Now I am really happy to have her back!!!
