[Vocal Profile] Tamar Braxton

Vocal Type:Coloratura Soprano
Vocal Range:Four Octaves and One Note (C3-D7)
Whistle Register: Yes
Vocal Pluses: Tamar Braxton finds her strength in her head voice and higher chest register. Her lower range is not as strong but is still well supported. Due to Tamar's expert mixing of her head and chest voice, her belting range extends all the way to a Bb5; having a very bright, light quality to it.

Her head voice is smooth and airy, and is well connected to the rest of the voice.
She is also able of singing notes in the whistle register, producing a tone that is not piercing but instead very smooth.

Tamar Braxton's voice has an uncanny ability to execute complicated runs, along with ad-libs, which she uses to add to the emotion of the music. Her voice also has a quick vibrato that she uses well.

Vocal Negatives: Under utilised whistle register, and her lower range lacks the true strength of the voice as a whole.
Thanks to Jerell for putting this profile together!

  1. Her tone sounds so much like Mariah Carey's, not her timbre, but just the way it sounds o.o

  2. It's amazing how much vocal diversity can exist in one family! Tamar is obviously a very high soprano and Toni is a classic contralto.

  3. She sounds like a few people. Very strange!

  4. I have often heard of her talents but never really got round to listening to any of her material. Can anyone recommend any songs? Ps Love that you are currently loving Charlotte's "The Rise" I am still in love with that EP and Back to Scratch.

  5. Tamar is indeed a coloratura Soprano, but a darker voiced coloratura Soprano, she is Dramatic Coloratura Soprano. a voice that is little above lighter than a Lyric Soprano. she doesn't seem to have full sustained control over her whistle register but obviously she seems much comfortable singing in head voice

  6. Try her song Try me. It was before her voice was as developed as it is now and her higher notes back then were more piercing. You can also listen to her singing with her sisters. She has the highest range and often has runs in their acapellas so look up the songs "God put a rainbow in the sky by the braxtons" "The lords Prayer by the braxtons" "Tamar rehearsing the national anthem" and "Run jordan by the raxtons".

  7. I was watching her show this weekend, this girl has a greet voice, that reminds me a lot of Mariah's tone and texture wise ironically Mariah is her idol , but ishe is out of shape, due to lack of care and screaming and abuse. Im glad to she she is getting vocal trainning right now, as she was having issues jumping from her high chest voice to her falsetto voice. I think once she gets into shape she she will have a lot offer vocally

  8. Also try her new song Love and war. But the song that really showcases her abilities and that whistle register would be Money Can't Buy Me Love

  9. She is not a coloratura soprano. she is just a Lyric soprano capable of singing higher. if she was a coloratura soprano she would have a smaller voice that wouldn't sound projected enough and also with a piercing upper register

  10. she doesn't sound like mariah carey nor does she remind me of her ..but i love her voice tho..

  13. tamar braxton is a dramatic coloratura soprano...

  14. May you explain to me why you feel she is dramatic?

    ReplyDelete
  15. They way she goes about singing reminds me of Mariah not the exact sound.

  16. She is NOT a dramatic coloratura. I mean seriously.

  17. So she's just a normal coloratura soprano?

  18. Yes. Maybe even a lyric.

  19. She is a lyric soprano. Angelfully constructed this profile so no doubt it was wrong.

  20. I'm so disappointed her album is being pushed to September. I was looking forward to it and mariah's. Ugh I'll have to wait. Can anyone recommend any jill scott?

  22. I agree though she seems like a lyric to me but I am not expirenced enough to decide lyric coloratura or just lyric because lyrics can monuver complex runs aswell.

  23. IMO She seems like a light-lyric, more so in the branch of Leona Lewis as opposed to Ariana Pequeña.

  24. I've personally never heard Tamar use head voice, only a very disconnected falsetto.
But, hearing that Angelfully made this vocal profile, I'm not shocked about that inaccuracy.

  25. I don't ever call any lyric or dramatic a coloratura in pop because there is no definition for a pop coloratura...if a singer with great agility gets vocal coaching and is able to execute runs I associate with a coloratura (fioraturas, appagios, trills, roulades) and do them without weight tripping, then maybe...just maybe, I'll label them as a coloratura...and Tamar isn't a coloratura. lol

  26. She doesn't sound too naturally volume-y. So light lyric might be what she really is. One aspect I like about her is that the fact that she sings relatively low notes (by soprano standard) with some "decent" (no italics so I had to suffice) resonance gives her a nice illusion that she can go much lower than she actually can. I like that style and I have been doing it since I heard her sing Love and War.... lol

What did u guys think of my live vocal range video for Tamar?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I would say if you have the right training you could be a pop coloratura but the only way to truly find out if someone is a coloratura is to train. My voice teacher is a coloratura soprano who thought she was a lyric till she explored. She can whistle up to B6 if not higher. So anyway i could believe tamar could be a coloratura if she maybe got some training.

  30. Very plausible considering her agility. Its just her vocal runs lack structure and aren't thought out, kinda free-styled, which is why they can feel a bit unpolished. Still a gorgeous voice nonetheless.

  31. Now that I think about it on one episode of the braxtons I remember Tamar being in a voice lesson and her head voice was very weak.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That was due to deterioration. If I remember correctly it was because of all of the caffinated beverages she was drinking and stress (over her husbands health when he was in the hospital)

    ReplyDelete
  33. maybe because she has very powerful voice

    ReplyDelete
  34. People use power in refence to delivery and contrast between highs and lows, rather than it's true meaning...sheer volume presence...Tamar, though decent at projection does not have a sheer volume presence...nor the timbre of a dramatic (which needs a sheer volume presence as well as a steely voice ). In fact I'll go this far. She is a very nimble singer but does very sloppy embellishments. She doesn't deserve the tittle "coloratura"...She is a light lyric soprano.
    :)

  35. maybe not timbre of a dramatic . but power has like dramatic p.s she is lyric soprano you are right

    ReplyDelete
  36. How is her technique?

    ReplyDelete
  37. You know what. I'll say she is a bit of a singer rather than a "Vocalist" because she gets a bit caught up in her message and ends up doing a sloppy little run. LOL, (little is an understatement) but overall, from what I've seen, she is pretty decent as far as technique goes. I love her tonality when belting.

  38. Listen to Love & War, If You Don't Wanna Love Me, and All the Way Home

    ReplyDelete
  39. She is no one's coloratura.
    She is a lyric soprano.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I do believe she is a Lyric coloratura soprano but not the highest one. her voice has a child like quality to it because of the timbre. a full Lyric Soprano will have a more mature female sound

    ReplyDelete
  41. She's not a Coloratura anything. Seriously. She's just a Lyric. She's yet to exhibit Coloratura-level passages.

Other Vocal Pluses: Her voice has a ringing but syrupy smooth quality to it, similar to Whitney Houston; however, her tone most closely resembles Mariah Carey. She can manipulate the relative "feel" of her voice to be either light, soft, and soothing or heavy, big, and powerful, all while maintaining that resonant feature.

She now has more control in her upper belts, and voice altogether, being able to move through octaves and registers effortlessly. Her volume and breath control is much better, allowing her lower register a little more thickness. She utilizes these improvements to allow her immense ease in her belts, only showing added effort past her E5.

The dynamics of her voice are very intriguing. One sound she produces can be completely contradicted with another sound that is the utter opposite (i.e. she can shape her voice to one akin to Mariah Carey or one akin to Toni Braxton, both in sound and style). Her melisma, vocal growls, and other vocal ornaments fashion her voice and techniques wonderfully.

Other Vocal Negatives: At times, her voice can seem coarse and strained. At these times, her voice becomes piercing and crackly, and can sound painful in the upper belts. Her head voice can become unpleasant if not warmed up.
