[Watch] Nicki Minaj Objectifies Herself And Sets Back Female Rappers Everywhere With Performance @ Billboard Awards 2013

nicki minaj billboard 2013

It's Nicki Minaj's and some surgeon's body and she can do whatever she wants with it, that's feminism right? But still, this performance of High School was so ergh to watch. Was it really necessary to perform that stripper routine on top of, and for, someone considered to be your mentor, Nicki? It just makes me feel all sorts of uncomfortable, especially considering the power dynamics and the subtext- Lil Wayne also discovered her- at play here. This wasn't empowerment, and the comment at the end proves just where her mentor's attention was. (I'll give you a hint, it wasn't on her lyrical talent/skill.)

The world really needs for some strong female rappers who aren't about the body and their hyper-sexuality to add balance and variety to that which is being offered. I worry about the next generation of aspiring female rappers, and the state of the industry itself, if this is what they think they have to do and look like to make it big in the male-dominated industry of rap/hip-hop.

Enjoy......

  1. I hate to say it but this was my favorite perfomance of the night...I'm just a sucker for some good twerking no matter how belittling a gender it is...As I said in the chat box, who ever did her illegal but lift on top of the Brazilian but lift should be commended because it wasn't actually too stuff this time like it was in the Freaks music video with French Montana...Diva I do not recommend you watch that if this made you cringe. lol

On a differnet note, (which for me is quite easy to seperate a perfomance from a person's character) Nicki Minaj has some issues....Twitter rants on everything, only allowing interviewers to ask 2 questions before she storms off, and if she doesn't like the question she rips on them? She had the nerve to call Mariah unclassy and insecure.... IDK what to say for her anymore....

Again, love the twerking, hate the rapper... lol

But wait until her find out this blog; you know she LOVES to fight journalists and blog owners. U better watch out, Divas Devotee.

  3. i agree DD, im an ex nicki fan and iv seen this done before but her vocal's were weak, the song was weak and wayne was weak. this performance didn't have much going for it.there are 1000's of new rappers springing up these days, you have...

brooke candy: an ex stripper who's always near naked but its cool because it's genuine if that makes sense , she used to need to be naked to make her money as a stripper so she's just being herself. its across between female empowerment and stripping for men hahaha but she does it for herself and is always pushing for gay rights as she's genuinely bisexual and is heavily into female empowerment often questioning why men get to treat women a certain way in rap . check out everybody does

iggy azalea most people know her and her story, australian girl in miami at 16 working on her craft by studying southern rappers. raps with a southern twang and raps about everything from pu$$y to working hard. she's got skin on show but its not always necessary now she's famous . check out work,my world, slo

show tha product: got alot of promis because she doesn't rely on skin to get far, the raps are well thought out and she dosent dress revealingly.check out cookie cutter b****

azealia banks: im sure everyone knows her, shes got that 90s-early 2000's vibe but tends got abit crazy when it comes to confrontation on twitter. most notted for 212

awkwafina: asian rapper bassed in nyc , quirky geek style, no big booty bikini stuff here . lyrics leave alot to be desired but she has her own niche . check out my v**,nyc b****

this wasent supposed to be a list of good rappers just a variety as the rap world seems to becoming more diverse as it gains attention . im not saying any of these are better or worse than nicki either but it seems unlikely a raper who doesn't resort to grinding on men will get far due to the shock value

  4. And to think what rap originally was all about. ;-)

  5. A sucker for good twerking????? HAHAHAHAHAHA that was NOT twerking. Moving a prosthetic is hardly comparable to females with who can move the REAL thing.

This is twerking. You're welcome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtm6i9k7_hk

  6. I totally agree with you DD, but I would actually call the performance pretty good. I mean based on what I'm used to seeing from her (like that Roman shit she put on a while ago). For me the hottest chick in the rap game is easily Kat Dahlia. "212" by Azeala Banks is brilliant but I haven't heard anything on the same caliber from her (maybe I just haven't listened enough though) and Iggy Azeala needs to work on her delivery, flow, and lyrics. Nicki is and will always be a joke.

  7. That poor car...she beat the hell out of it with her clitty. But she was great. Nicki was just good... That is what I was inferring. Lol..

    ReplyDelete
  8. Nicki was fairly brave to get up there on that stage and do any type of twerk routine. I initially learned about it from Clevver music and I though she was going to be as stuff as she was in "Freaks" but I was genuinely surprised to she that her butt had that signature "giggle" associated with twerking. Though she was doing some basic moves, I fail to understand why I was so impressed. It was nothing great apart from from when she moved each cheek individually. That is why I kina commend her surgeons...lol

I noticed as of lately, I've been treating twerking as a science...I'm so strange.

  9. I'm sure she could justify it with "women should be able to express their sexuality freely like men" but I feel like she also needs to understand that a lot of young girls watch her and while feminism is important, she needs to take her role in the public eye seriously, and realize that she doesn't need to stoop down to that level, even if some men do (which they also shouldn't).

    ReplyDelete
  10. I have seen worst from other female performers and Nicki herself... It still is way better than Mariah acting as the "random background hot girl" on her own videos lately...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Dude twerking IS a science haha.

I still refuse to recognize what Nicki did as twerking though.

  12. Awesome article Evan, this renders utter good sense. It's so funny exactly how had been conditioned to feel interesting to ladies whenever we want to winnings their endorsement and the fact of the mean is actually that's not enough,
as I understand it, a lot more importantly we need to be
of interest to women. Meaning we need to posses the qualities of the
guys she has a desire in and then MUST show restraint and not give it up
on a platter and become a chunk of a test she
has to work for. It's therefore funny but true, ladies are really like crotch cats, if you show interest, passion and dote all over that cat it will carry out from lack of interest. Unfortunately if you make you position thought and exclusive offer a little sequence that is definitely external that vagina cats grasp you'll do
not observe that crotch get the job done therefore frustrating
to play with you. Therefore there you choose, nuff said.

  13. clASSy. nope. Not even one bit. This disappoints me to a new level coming from her. To think that I used to like her. WTF was I thinking?!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thanks for the list! There are a lot of great rappers out there, it's just none are touching Nicki- commercially. And herein lies the problem. We need more of these rappers on the main stage, showing everyone that rap is more diverse than this.

    ReplyDelete
  15. As long as you're here, everything will be okay!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was enjoying it up until the lap dance. But I agree with Hannah, that wasn't good twerking- was too lazy.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, I was enjoying it up until the lil Wayne lap dance. That really spoilt the whole thing for me. I'm personally loving Azeala Banks, her EPS have been amazing and full of fresh and original content. Just hope her stinky attitude hasn't sunk her before she had a chance to really shine.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My issue wasn't with the way she was acting/ dancing, it was with the Lil wayne lap dance. That was all kinds of wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi, yeah this article is genuinely nice and I have learned lot of things
    from it about blogging. thanks.

  20. one of the reason why the music industry is sinking down.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I know, but I still have seen worst, even from Nicki... I even found the lap dance to be pretty mild... I don't understand the shock.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Okay, I'm gonna have to listen to her EPs. Ugh that attitude though...

    ReplyDelete
  23. And I totally agree about the performance up until the unnecessary lap dance.

    ReplyDelete
  24. nicki didnt twerk

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, okay... so acting like a slut is better than acting like a 'random background hot girl'.

I thought that the former would be totally classless and the latter inoffensive (as it happens in the background) but I suppose I could be wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Once you are a half naked (because Mariah is too hot for clothers on her videos) background sexy girl on your own videos, this is FAR more objectifying than a lap dance... Nicki is the lead star on her performer, Mariah was a supporting sexy girl on HER OWN MATERIAL. She is objectified to a point she even not leading her own videos.

And even if either Nicki or Mariah are setting women back acting the way they do, your slut shamming is far worst than both. ;)

BTW, I'm not fan of either girl (I dislike both, actually), but I believe this post is unfair on Minaj.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The whole point of my statement was to convey my opinion that being hot in the background doesn't set women back as opposed to acting like a woman who chooses to obey men's whims and give them lap dances. I used 'slut' because it was an easily accessible word that would convey my meaning. How would you prefer I describe Nicki's actions? Because that's the only fitting adjective I can think of.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cut her some slack. Wit that prosthetic booty it is hard to get the full 360 degree twerk torque. Lol she tried....give her that at the least...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Not a fan of the lap dance either but this is def not her first time doing. She's done it with Drake and Lil Wayne before.

    ReplyDelete
  30. And my comments are my personal opinion about the post, what I believe I'm also making very clear. I'm not saying anyone should change their opinions, just that I disagree with them and why. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  31. A woman choosing to obey still is a character of her own on a far higher level than the random sexy girl like Mariah is on both #Beautiful and Triumphant... Even so, I didn't see Nicki obeying anyone, I saw her sitting Lil' Wayne on a chair and taking the initiative to give him a lap dance... Hardly her at her most problematic behavior to women IMO, as I don't believe "sex" is something problematic. And I would prefer if you used a world that is not used to judge women for having an active sex life as a way to control their behavior on society... that would be REALLY nice.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It's not her job to raise other's children, though. If I need to depend on a celebrity to show my child how to behave then I'm the one that's failing as a parent; not an entertainer.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well, one could argue that her expressing her sexuality in the way she pleases is pro-woman and pro-be-yourself. But I don't like Nicki Minaj so I won't argue that. I guess when you have no performing talent, you have to resort to humping people.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes, I'm just saying...imo you are reading ''unfair'' where there really isn't. The same criticism has been directed at others as well.

I btw presumed your ''this post'' was referring to the article by DD.
If it was referring to Reiko's comment....my comment was misplaced. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. What Ricky 94 said. But also, one might reason that performance may be a result of feminists efforts in the past but it is not a feminist act in itself.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lol correct me if I'm wrong but it is my impression you are a male?
Kinda ironic always when males start lecturing women on what is feministically correct . Just saying :-D

    ReplyDelete
  37. This is actually one of the best performances from her i've ever seen...she didnt miss a beat. and her stage presence was great. Its sad she let that all be overpowered by some tacky and raunchy "dancing" decisions

    ReplyDelete
  38. It was lazy and basic I'll admit that... I wish I had a more valid explanation for why I like it...I guess my male sense of femininity is on the fritz because of allergy season.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh snap. Opie just handed that one out like a champ. ROFL

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hahaha okay dude, I guess the irony escapes you.
I did not say a male cannot talk about feminism. I pointed at the irony of a male telling a woman what to do. In a discussion on female empowerment. And in particular telling a woman what is the correct feminist way to speak.

Since mine was obviously not any sort of argument, your piramide is irrelevant. It was in fact an observation.

But if you want me to bring forth an argument....Reiko was clearly not using 'slut' to describe a sexually active woman but a woman sexually active in a particular manner with a particular motive.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Actually, I don't remember ever seeing a distinction between using "slut" or this or that way, I don't remember seeing people saying it was ok pointing fingers at women for expressing their sexuality for this or that reason, even if it being or not being sexist or objectfying always being a valid discussing topic. The idea that women need to "be classy" in order to be respected is sexist on its own.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Check out that link and you will see such distinctions made. :-)

And Reiko herself made such distinctions as well when she attempted to clarify her use of the word to you.
She however did NOT state women need to be classy in order to be respected.
She wasn't making any such general statement but responding to your specific examples.

In the meantime, you yourself were most definitely 'finger pointing' at Mariah. So ...as a matter of fact, were implying it IS okay to do just that.

And btw..saying women need to be classy in order to be respected, would only be sexist if you at the same time hold a different standard for men. You assuming that if somebody WOULD make that statement while discussing female behavior, they would mean only women...that I would argue is actually equally sexist.;-D

  43. isn't lil Wayne basically her boss? That's what I think is sending out the wrong message. But yes, it's her body and she can do whatever she likes with it. It's not like it's keeping me awake at night. This (the post )was my first reaction to it. Without the lap dance for her boss, the performance was kinda cute.

    ReplyDelete
  44. this is so true, but she clearly isn't dissuading kids from being into her music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9573kGBtuE

    ReplyDelete
  45. And at the same time she's also telling kids to be confident, stay in school and do the right.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Who wouldn't say that. I'd be more surprised if someone was saying drop out of school, don't be confident and, while you're at it, do wrong. I'd rather see her prove, via her actions, that she is a role model.

But I still agree that its for parents to police what their children are listening to/watching. I just wish Nicki wasn't so blatantly playing to a younger demographic. There's something immoral about it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Actually a really good point. I'm a little bit on the fence on Nicki. She definitely is a great feminist (e.g. the famous gender role rant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpt8WkyW4Pc ) I definitely like her as a feminist to adults, and I know that she doesn't perform like that on shows that kids are watching. I don't know, I've gotten so many arguments on her and I'm still trying to form my own opinion. (And I totally believe in feminism, and I think women should express their sexuality any way they want.)

    ReplyDelete
  48. That video though is Ellen and her team of writers coming up with this scenario.
And then there's the proud daddy dabbing at his eyes.
What I see Minaj do is earnestly tell the kid to stay in school and even when offering the shopping spree she is suggesting school stuff first and mostly.

I'd say Minaj is a rolemodel for learning language at the very least.
That's something. Considering the semi illiterate state of many American youths today. ;-D

    ReplyDelete
  49. That's honestly the only reason I jumped to her defence on this one. I'm not even a fan of her, but she knows what she's doing as a person. She took control of herself. If anything, people shouldn't say "My children learned to be a hoochie" No, your child learned to take control over their own bodies and that if a man can do it, then a woman can too.

    ReplyDelete
  50. My humps my humps my lovely LITTLE HUMPS check it out LOLOLOLOL

    ReplyDelete
  51. nicki: was dry humping and giving lil wayne a lap dance - when men go to strip clubs, they go there to objectify women and to appreciate them explicitly for their bodies nothing else and it had the same effect on lil wayne

mariah: was dancing seductively for miguel and it is somewhat implied in the video/song that they are either courting each other or are in a relationship

we all know nicki is trashy and that mariah is classy

    ReplyDelete
  52. cant take her seriously because her speaking voice is so annoying

    ReplyDelete
  53. Just tacky. No wonder people assume that black women are hyper sexual whores. It makes me sick. I love my beautiful brown skin, but its very difficult to stand tall and proud when people of different racial/cultural backgrounds see me and feel as though they are able to comfortably judge my characted based on their predisposed frame of reference.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thanks Nicki, 10 steps backwards...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Can't take you seriously because your lack of good reason is so annoying.
