[Watch] Lady Gaga Performs "Applause" Live @ 2013 MTV Music Awards

Lady Gaga's first live outing of the ARTPOP era has just happened at the 2013 MTV Awards! Playing dress-up live on stage, this showing at the awards ceremony in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center marked the first time the kooky singer has sang the new single Applause live. It wasn't as bombastic as I was expecting, but I actually like that Gaga didn't resort to gimmicks or controversy in order to promote the song.

With lyrics like "Give me that thing that I love " and "Live for the way that you cheer and scream for me" this song was made for a live audience. It's just a shame the famous crowd didn't like being told what to do, looking bored and uninterested at its conclusion. For some reason I was expecting a standing ovation was a guarantee- more so for her return than anything else- so to see that frosty reaction came as even more of a shock to me. Oh well, maybe they just didn't appreciate Gaga spilling the Tea on what they all live for: "the applause, applause, applause". Well that and the money!

Thoughts?

  3. Gaga, I lost respect for you after watching you wear a butt pad...--_--... Continue to give me a reason to be a fan please. Anyways, you slayed the dance at the end LOL...

  4. I'm quite disappointed :/
I really expected a great performance, anyone besides me noted that she skipped BTW era?
Also the vocals were bad, is the very first time that I'm seeing Gaga going out of tune like that.
At least she hit the head notes of the song quite well.

This makes me feel better :)
Maybe it weren't that bad after all (except the vocals)

  8. this years VMA's was bad, too many overly long performances and not enough awards,
justin timberlake and miley cyrus were the worst with JTs being overly long and MC making a ass of her self,LG was ok

  9. I loved the intro.

  10. Is it me or did the "background" dancers finish too late?
I am going with "meh" as well.

  11. I'm not 100% sure but I think the head notes were lip synced

  12. a butt pad???
that ass is big because shes italian
theres multiple pics on online where you can clearly see its her real butt

  13. it was too busy for me i wish she just came out with that last outfit and focused on the vocals and saved choreo on just the last part because dancing the whole time caused her to be short of breath

the vocals in the intro were great though and the head notes were good too

  14. Alright performance. Miles better than Mileys.

  15. I dont think it was supposed to be her going through her eras but to show that she is going back to the way it started. Seeing as the fame is the only real "Era" she showcased.

I liked the choreography. But too much of changing costumes.
Her lows were a little bit off due to this being her "most physically demanding" performance ever.

  17. If that "what?" means "I didn't underestand what you said" I'll say that I misspelled "lip synched". If it means "what the hell are you talking about? they weren't lip synched" I'll say again that I'm not 100% sure (not even 50%), someone with better ears will be able to judge it better than me.

  18. While JT had a VERY long performance, I think he did very well with it. Also, not sure who in his team, but the attribution of the honorific nickname: "President of Pop" was very, VERY smart.

  19. Fame Monster-era was there with the Telephone wig (or at least that's what I attribute it to). She seemed to have bypassed the Born This Way era, which may or may not be on purpose. She may have wanted mainstream fans to be reminded of her pop non-preachy roots...

  20. I personally, thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and I liked hearing the vocal imperfections because it kinda showed she was singing while doing all that choreo. That said though, she could've done without that wacky dancing/singing during the line "Pop culture was in art.." looked a bit odd, and not Lady GaGa odd, just odd..

  21. Her first outfit was very... well, I feel like Gaga's almost trying to out-crazy herself, but it's just coming off as a little stale now. But otherwise, I thought her voice definitely sounded great, and it was definitely live at most parts. Her dancing was on point, and I was happy to see her smile at the end too, I always enjoy a smiling diva. But this performance definitely felt weak to some of her past performances, such as Paparazzi at the VMAs in I think 2009.

  22. The audience throughout the entire show was quite stale.

Anyways, I liked it. I liked that she was having fun and smiling, which we don't see very often. You could definitely tell she was happy to be back.

I don't feel like she needs to constantly top herself and constantly comparing what she does now to what she has done in the past is pointless and regressive. Her voice sounded great, she danced great, and she looked great. I can't ask for much more.

  23. LOL That's not a very high bar to set.

  24. I don't think it was a butt pad, however I don't think it was natural either. I mean if I had hip surgery and was going under why not get a lil something extra while they're down there.

  25. I loved this performance, I thought the voclas were on point (especially with the choreography that was taking place), I thought it was rather tame (especially for Gaga) it maintained a consistent theme, was NOT the exact same thing as the music video and the transitions through the eras as well as costume changes kept it interesting without being distracting

Here's an audience view, the vocals sound a lot better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FxmhfyyC-U&feature=player_embedded

Also, Those faces in the beginning HAVE me cracking up so hard!! I can't wait for the memes/GIFs

  27. After watching the performance a ton of times, I think that it wasn't bad after all,
I was quite mad due the bad vocals at the end, but she gave her best with the choreography, so I can't blame her.
Sadly there's no chance of doing a vocal showcase of this performance like I was planning, but the "interlude" vocals and the head notes were great so they can be used in a future vocal range video.

  31. she revisited her old looks shes not trying to out do anything just showcase her visual evolution

all of those looks are looks shes done before except for that canvas on her face at the beginning

    ReplyDelete
  32. i agree with the costume changing - she couldve done without it and the performance would have been slicker

  33. everyone was better than miley
