[Watch] Ariana Grande Saves 2013 AMA (Vocally) With "Tattooed Heart" Performance

Thank Pizza for Ariana Grande! Between Christina Aguilera's yawn-inducing performance of Say Something and TLC's continued desecration of my cherished memories, I was ready to give up on the 2013 American Music Awards altogether. [Note: This was before I saw Gaga and Katy Perry's offerings]

Okay, yes, the intro to Tattooed Heart was unnecessary and showy, but I'm guessing that was the point. Ariana is a new artist that I'm sure still feels has a lot to prove, vocally, to her peers and the audience. I can forgive her for that, as long as it doesn't carry on into her career once she's established. Besides, after that little indiscretion, she hit her stride quickly and gave an accomplished vocal. The song itself isn't one of my favourites, I should add, but I can't hold that against her delivery of it.

My only criticism is that I wish she'd have backed a little away from the microphone on some of the big notes, just to make them sound a little softer. But that was a tiny issue in an overall fantastic performance.

Thoughts?

  1. Vocally impressive but overall boring.

  2. I didn't watch that much of the vmas this year but this performance stuck with me much more.

  3. She slayed vocally but her stage presence is just...

  4. Ah this is my favourite performance of hers ever. She killed it. I understand the showy intro - she sings The Way intro on a stage that, despite a platinum album, she is still a fairly unknown presence and newcomer. She sang her most famous hit before moving into something that hasn't had radio time (yet).

Her voice was stunning here. Resonant for the first time in a long time. AND as soon as she got away from The Way, and especially further into the performance, she stopped sounding like a Mariah wannabe! This was beautiful, classy and powerful. A+ Ariana.

  5. You were pretty much spot on - except the last scene :) The last scene is showing her as an 11 year old playing the first symphony she composed/wrote, showing her love of music and creation, while being surrounded by clippings from critics slamming everything about her, particularly things that don't really relate to music (weight, sales - which i hope don't reflect music [i mean, come on, katy perry is successful...], relevancy etc). Gaga is screaming "do what you want with my body" as she is over it, and has stopped caring what they write about her, because she still has her mind/voice/dreams etc.

LOVED this performance. Her vocals were stellar - especially those last few head notes, so pretty - the dancing was fantastic and I loved the arrangement. Very Marilyn inspired with the first verse.
Also, she looked so goddamn beautiful coming down the red carpet in Versace on that horse.

  6. I thought the performance was fine, the dancing was spot on. In fact the only difference is the costumes. These women are in their 40s, minus Lil Mama, and they have not performed in a while. I am sorry but not everyone looks great in leggings. I wish they had brought back their baggy pants, that would have looked more flattering on T-boz and made them look more cohesive. I think they did a good job all things considered.

  7. Thanks for the heads up! So close! lol.

  8. Most interesting performance of the night. Gaga & Ariana won the night...

  9. Look, Gaga rehearsing for the show in backstage, those highs !! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10201275934800592 Anyway, her best performance recently !

  10. How can you hate her! Look at her ickle face. Like a little pixie, it is!

    ReplyDelete
  11. it was so Mariah, So Mariah... that I kinda liked it.

  12. As a master of the cute arts myself, I have learned to see through this form of deception...behind those glowing eyes I sense...I don't know...a strange force of which I have never experienced before! Could she be...no...its not possible...

    ReplyDelete
  13. thank you for not just looking on the surface and understand there was more to the performance
her vocals were good for the most part with a few iffy notes and the beginning of the chorus when she was trying to jump on the table

this performance along with ariana's saved the night from being a disaster
it proves once again what a good performer she is and how she truly knows how to work the stage and it honestly dont think people realize how hard it is to dance and sing at the same time only very few can do it

the head notes at the end were beautiful and i really wish she would utilize it more in live performances and in her studio recordings

  14. Yawn inducing? Are you deaf and stupid?

  15. Everything about this "Mariah Carey: Tribute Vocalist" aggravates me.

    NEXT.

  16. Oh goodness...

Although she is 'talented', per say, her days are numbered. It's only a matter of time before she becomes a 'distant' memory' in the eyes of some and, overall, popular culture - including mine - and that time is arriving much sooner than expected.

This era has become a 'complete catastrophe'.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Saves? Oh please. I mean, it was a step up from all of the bland vocals. However, there were some tense upper belts. So vocally? Ehhh. I found myself more indulged in Katy Perry's mid belts if I'm going to be completely honest lol But yes, Ariana most certainly did well. That I cannot deny. I just wouldn't go as far as "saves."

    ReplyDelete
  18. Really poor dancer imo and she doesn't seem to be able to let go of Madonna anymore than Ariana can let go of Mariah.

    ReplyDelete
  19. "good" as this is, it is still like Coleman so aptly put it..a "Mariah Carey tribute singer"
After viewing these reviewed AMA videos I say...my Americana heart says Thank heavens for Miley. The only one who sounded and good AND believable. Like she was singing about real emotions she actually experienced

    ReplyDelete
  20. It worked because it was just fun. No "artsy" stuff like Gaga's been trying to inject everywhere, just plain fun with great vocals, choreo, and a narrative. Finally a good performance of this song!

    ReplyDelete
  21. The only catastrophe are Gaga haters believing fake articles that make no sense. Anyone with a brain would crunch the numbers and see that an artist would have to sell 3,000,000+ copies of an album in order to make a profit after shelling out $25m. NO label would shell out that much money for anyone, except for maybe MJ back in his prime.

This RUMOR was first reported by a troll on The Examiner and has since been debunked. Come up with something better.

  22. L.M.A.O

    I see you're upset...

So, in that case, as a risk of you 'SEETHING' to the point of Hypervenilation, I will be sure to keep my response/s cute and sweet:

    'Art-Pop' (2013) - 1st Week/U.S.A - "259k"

    'Art-Pop' (2013) - 2nd Week/U.S.A - "52k"

    'Art-Pop' (2013) - 1st Week/Worldwide - "400k")

By "Born This Way's" standards, which debuted with '1.1+ Million' in it's first week in 2011 - in the U.S - as well as having sold over '1+Million' copies WW, 'Art-Pop' is a GARGANTUAN COMMERCIAL FAILURE (FLOP) for 'Interscope'

    Comprende'? : - D

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, I definitely found Katy Perry's performance to be more entertaining. You can't give no credit to her for those decent belts! lol

Okay, so Ariana had some well-executed high notes, was vocally impressive, mostly on point, etc. etc. I wasn't impressed so much as to say she was the 'savior of the show' because her vocals never seem to change. I was just as bored with her as I was with Christina Aguilera. She did do well, but I wish she would just mix it up a bit to stray away from the MC imitator image.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Please continue telling me about Gaga's massive debut with Born This Way since that somehow makes her look bad...

ARTPOP debuted at #1 and has sold 553,000 copies WW in its first week, also known as the year's largest debut by a female artist. http://www.mediatraffic.de/albums.htm

The only people seething are the people who hate Gaga spending time making things up to make themselves feel better about her success. I'm sure you seethed over Gaga bringing in the highest ratings on SNL since March. I'm sure you're seething over Gaga's Roseland shows selling out. And I'm sure you're currently seething as DWUW crawls up the Billboard and iTunes charts. That's your problem, though.

    ReplyDelete
  25. and artpop is on par with bangerz and prism sooo.....
even at her worst she still sells on the same scale as katy and miley

plus why is it always about sales?
miley, katy, rihanna, and many others could never debut with 1.1 million (630K) if ur so butthurt about the amazon deal so BTW numbers just prove she is big
not to mention she rules in other countries unlike katy and miley - the born this way tour went down as one of the highest grossing tours of all time despite being cut short due to her injury
katy and miley could never sell out twickenham stadium like gaga can

shes far from over - she may not be number one right now but atleast she knows what it feels like the be the most talked about, most listened to, most beloved pop artist and she experienced this all during her peak

and dont shade cyndi please shes flawless

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't understand your point. She clearly has a favorite artist. She's learning from one of the greatest vocalists of all time, and she sounds fantastic while she's doing it. Mariah didn't reinvent the wheel, herself. But no one begrudged her that.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Im just saying that connecting the dots between Ariana and her Idol is so easy that she is literally emulating her constantly, which is annoying because Ariana is suppose to sell herself as just that. Ariana. Shes being marketed as the new Mariah which is my opinion is downgrading her talent because Mariah makes Ariana look a lot less good than she really is. Also this performance screamed Mariah to me mainly due to the all black and all male backup group behind her, which mariah was quite infamous for when she first debuted. A light Soprano with a much lower voiced back up was very odd. And Ariana has only featured Female backups until this performance...

    ReplyDelete
  28. take away all that staging and her geisha get up and lets see if you would have still been entertained

ariana grande has a great voice
cant say the same for katy perry

    ReplyDelete
  29. i believed the CAT more

    ReplyDelete
  30. Unintended 'Art of Letting Go' reference?

    ReplyDelete
  31. If someone tells me one more time that she's only "influenced" by Mariah I'm going to flip.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well, you appear to be a much "Saner Stan" than that thing above me - of whom I shall refrain from responding to for a second time, seeing that 'it' will just continue to distort the facts - but do you, honestly, believe that this 'era' is going/has gone well for '...Gaga'?

I don't 'hate/dislike' her - but I am, by far, over the 'extreme- absurd antics' that she has been perpetrating for the past two years - I just feel her time is coming to an 'abrupt' halt/end.

Also, as much as I LOVE Ms. Lauper, she is a 'Pop- Cult Artist'. Let's not pretend, nor act, as if 'Madonna' didn't, completely, snatch her weave in 1984 and has held it captive ever since. ; - D

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wouldn't count Miley out just yet Jeremiah....On her first tour..." In total, the Best of Both Worlds Tour had a total attendance of approximately one million people and grossed over US $54 million, according to Billboard Boxscore,
becoming the highest-grossing concert tour for a new act in 2007 and
2008. The record was recognized with the award for Breakthrough Act at
    the 2008 Billboard Touring Awards"

    On her second tour...
"In December 2009, the tour ranked atop Billboard's Hot Tours, based on the tour's European performances. For the month, box office grossed US $21.9 million for eleven shows in four markets.
The five concerts held at The O2 Arena in London, England produced ticket sales that topped $11 million (£6.8 million). On December 19, 2009,with an audience of 16,196, Cyrus broke the record for the largest attendance at The O2 Arena; a record that surpassed the previously tied records by Beyoncé Knowles' I Am... Tour (2009–10), Bon Jovi's Lost Highway Tour (2007–08), and Coldplay's Viva la Vida Tour (2008–10)."

    ReplyDelete
  34. Her third tour she sold out a stadium on Buenos Aires which holds 10.000 more seats than Twickenham.

And this is all prior to Bangerz. We will see how that tour will go.

    ReplyDelete
  35. ARTPOP sold 553k copies worldwide ._.
plus the debut on Japan it surpasses 600k way more than the fellow singers.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I felt that this performance was actually entertaining in that it lacked all of the showy flashy parts of all the other performances, it was so stripped that it stood out. Yes there were a few nitpicky things, but overall this was a solid vocal, she really was one of the only singers that nailed it that night. I definitely don't think Tattooed Heart is as influenced by Mariah as The Way and some of her other songs were, I hear the resemblance, but I honestly can't agree when people call her a carbon copy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Good for you. You of course are also a Gaga stan so the reason for your response is obvious.

Sucks for you that Miley is taking all the attention Gaga was hoping for with Artpop. I feel your pain bro. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Haha she was really trying hard to not miss the F#5 this time.

    ReplyDelete
  39. LOL so unintentional..I am not even seeing it. I was referring to the AMA performance of Ariana and what I and several others said in that thread.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh hang on...now I see it hahahaha.

Wish it HAD been intentional. But alas..the credit for that one is yours. Good one William! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  41. The vocal was good, and so was the dancing, I didn't care too much for the presidential narrative, but I thought the moments when she was on the piano alone singing was pretty gorgeous. Gaga's said from the start that the song was a double entendre for sex and the media, so DD you're right with that analysis.

    ReplyDelete
  42. “What a f—ing … sorry!” Miley said to the red carpet reporters. “What a
big scene stealer! Next time, I’m going to come in on a dragon.”

    http://hollywoodlife.com/2013/11/25/miley-cyrus-diss-lady-gaga-ama-red-carpet/

    Ok you're right

    haha

    ReplyDelete
  43. LOL.

    Exactly 'Opie'...

    The delusion is TRULY real!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. As you point out..the story is not about Gaga but about what Miley said about Gaga.
In today's pop clatter obviously Miley's diss is bigger news than Gaga's entrance.
And yes, I AM aware that you are only ever hear to post in Gaga's thread how she hit some note or other? Like I said to Jeremiah..I feel your pain. There you were, practically solely keeping that thread going all these months in anticipation of the new album and then...Bangerz dropped.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love TLC, Unpretty will always be my song. But of course, I think there's a reason that they broke up a while ago and haven't reunited since. I think the dancing and singing hit all the marks, but they were doing it on autopilot. I always look at the performer's faces in these shows because if you look closely, you can tell that they actually do not give a single shit about this show at all, same with Ke$ha earlier ("you can't imagine the immensity of the fuck I'm not giving"). Honestly when I see performers like that, I would rather they continue taking their career on hold, because if they can't even act excited about a performance, how can the audience?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Opie...
If I just come here to discuss 'bout Gaga range I think that is my problem.
Seriously, your life must be really "amazing" to give a fuck about what I do here. For someone who likes to call everyone a stan you're the worst one

    ReplyDelete
  47. Dude you misunderstood. I by no means am criticizing you commenting on Gaga's range. I am just using the fact that this is practically the only artist you seem to be interested in amongst all artists discussed on this blog as an indicator that you too are a Gaga stan and therefor disappointed at her thunder being stolen by Miley at present.

In short..my remark was an argument pertaining to the subject at hand. Your remark about my "life" however...beside the point and totally irrelevant and merely an attempt to distract from my counter argument to your link being spot on in that indeed Miley is stealing Gaga's thunder at every turn. :-)

And I am afraid you misunderstand the term "stan" as well.
It means fan beyond the rational.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh pleased, I wasn't entertained by that display at all. In fact, I found it to be very underwhelming and if I'm going to be honest, inaccurate.

Ariana does NOT have a great voice and she never did. Was that a great performance? Not even close to it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I didn't misunderstand nothing, I'm only interested on Gaga topic
because I don't have time to be 24h on this blog commenting on all threads, and if your point was right, so I have to be an active member who post on all topics to not be a stan? Ok Opie... Please get a life.

Also, for someone that posted a toy xylophone to insult my pitching ability just because I said that bangerz isn't a good album "stan" is the perfect compliment, you're not different from the ones that you criticize.

    ReplyDelete
  50. LOL Still trying to distract I see. How I spent my time is only showing that my musical interest is more varied than just Miley.

I thought it was you with the xylophone but I wasn't sure. Which should indicate exactly how big a role your postings really plays in my "life".

Maybe you ought to look up the definition of irrational?

The xylophone was in reference btw to the fact that you never speak of a song but always about some particular note achieved as if that is all you care about. And then it turned out you actually can't even pinpoint such notes without the aid of an instrument to tell you what note it is.

I thought at the time that, in light of that, your criticism of Bangerz was again..just an irrational (and envious) Gaga fan response.

Now please show me where I made any IRRATIONAL fan claims regarding Miley.

    ReplyDelete
  51. ps you did not misunderstand nothing? Don't sell yourself short. You did understand some things.

    ReplyDelete
  52. "Which should indicate exactly how big a role your postings really plays in my "life"."

The first reply totally contradicts this.

Pal, try to understand, I don't care if I have a big role on your life, I don't even did an envious response to bangerz
(now everyone that don't share your view is irrational? Should I say the same when you start hating Gaga?) I just don't like it, I don't even hate Miley I don't have why be envious of her, Gaga and Miley are on totaly different tiers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. It doesn't actually. The fact that I am aware you almost solely post on the Gaga thread is simply my general tendency to observe and remember trends. But I don't care enough to remember which of her stans said what to me or who I replied to.

And no, I never said you not agreeing with my views makes you irrational. I said the definition of a stan is a fan beyond the rational. Someone not rational about his object of adoration.

What I am saying is that your response regarding Bangerz wasn't based on the album but on it being serious competition for Gaga's spotlight. It was abundantly clear from the context. Just as your first response here.
    THAT is irrational fan behavior.

And really? You had not gotten yet that I already hate Gaga. Because she is utterly empty and derivative and comes with a boatload of stans who think a whole lot of empty BS and her hitting a given note is infinitely more interesting than, ya know..music and then have the gall to call what she does Art. And she has the same delusional idea of her own work.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anyway enough about boring, already over her prime, Gaga. Lets talk about Miley...way more interesting. Here's a lovely cover of Lana's Summertime Sadness. :-)

  55. Diva Devotee is run by an unemployed person who doesn't have anything to
do with his life. He keeps on saying he's a good music teacher but the
truth is that he just doesn't know what to say but to praise talentless
    singers like Gaga.

    ReplyDelete
  56. if you just dont like ariana, just say that. don't lie about her vocal prowess. every critic raves over her vocal ability, & KATY HERSELF SAID two weeks ago in her interview [full interview on youtube] that ariana has the best vocal in music today. so before you try to say hers aren't strong..... just stop. i looooove katy, but her vocals were not on point. look up the articles on ANYWHERE about last night's awards. you will see how great everyone knows ariana's vocals really were.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Shh peasant. If you don't like the site don't go on it? People who make "flop" inspired nicknames are truly the scum of the earth. Please remove your imbecile ass off this website.

Oh and Gaga talentless?? She is a lot of things, but talentless is certainly none of them.

    Dismissed ox

    ReplyDelete
  58. And you keep repeating the same things -_-...
Sorry pal, I already gave so much attention to these pre-judgements of my tastes based on what I post on Gaga vocal profile topic.

Y'know I have a lot of good vocals to pitch, it may be not that interesting to you, but for me its way more interesting than
stalking every member of this site.

    ReplyDelete
  59. entirely underwhelmed. cant tell from her delivery what emotion this song is trying to convey, what its about. makes me feel nothing. yes, she is technically note perfect, why is that suddenly enough in todays music?

    ReplyDelete
  60. I see you now have been reduced to absolutely no arguments regarding the actual subject at hand.

Just attempts at insults in order to try and rile me. If it hasn't worked so far, why do people like you think it will ever?

And really dude, get over yourself. I meant it when I said I merely used the facts around your posts here to demonstrate you are a Gaga stan. You can stop acting all butt hurt that I noticed such an obvious fact. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  61. " He keeps on saying he's a good music teacher "
Dude, when did DD ever say that? At least come with something better than lies if you want to critique the blog.

And actually a whole lot of people have heaped that title upon Ariana. Several in this very thread.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hmmm, I like Miley, too, but no offense, but I think that you're becoming more and more of a stan than anything else :/. I know how influenced you were when you saw her backyard sessions, but since then you've been overwhelmingly supportive of all her acts--even to the most vapid and note-cringey ones.

    ReplyDelete
  63. EXACTLY!!!!!!!

    SMFH.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I love the fact that you are so personally mad at someone based on subjective opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  65. i agree she can be fucking insane sometimes but i honestly cant count her out just yet - she still has plenty of time to snatch weaves - plus i honestly think ARTPOP is a much better album than Born This Way

haha and i also agree about madonna snatching cyndi's weave (and holding it captive ever since LMAO best comment ever) overall but "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" has made a much longer lasting impact than any of Madonna's songs

i just think we need to see her grow, sure she doesnt have the number one song right now - even though she is doing decent on the charts - but she is so much smarter, more talented, and more interesting than her peers - like you can tell that she has a true artist's brain when she speaks about her music and persona in interviews

    ReplyDelete
  66. i think she was growling - i love her growling in the song but it was uneccesary here
but the head notes at the end make up for that ;D

    ReplyDelete
  67. i also think that it was stupid of her to break up with troy carter her manager since the beginning of her career - she said that they split due to creative differences but i feel that it was something much bigger

plus her promotional campaign for this tour was nowhere near the amount of promo she did for BTW

compared to BTW, ARTPOP is a flop, but compared to a lot of her peers' debuts, it is not a FLOP

we will just have to see how this era pans out

i also heard rumors shes looking to sign with britney spears' management who also manages miley so we'll see how that pans out as well

    ReplyDelete
  68. you are disrespecting the creator of this blog??????????
    that is sad
dont spread your negativity here and your comment is one of the rudest posts i have ever come across on on this site

it is one thing to insult theses divas but a whole other thing to disrespect someone you dont know

    ReplyDelete
  69. a lot can be said about ariana but to downplay her voice is something else
    the girl can SAAAAAAANG
katy can barely perform or sing her own songs

    ReplyDelete
  70. because a lot of pop stars cant even hit the right notes in their own songs today

    ReplyDelete
  71. miley's peak is nowhere near gaga's peak
people found gaga weird and interesting
miley cyrus has just gained infamy for so desperately trying to break away from her hannah montana days by twerking, practically showing her vagina on national television and wearing clothes that expose her ass even though she has NONE whatsoever

    ReplyDelete
  72. bangerz barely debuted with only 17,000 more copies than ARTPOP so i dont know what you are raving about
278k is a respectable number no doubt but they aren't mega elusive in today's music industry

and miley didnt diss her - it was a joke i can recall and find plenty of interviews where miley speaks very highly of gaga

    ReplyDelete
  73. Please. don't try me with that BS lol There are a multitude of artists who are a lot better than her vocally. Ariana doesn't even rank in the top 70% of the greatest singers. I can a thousand Ariana Grande's on Youtube and in Asia and all over really. What do I have to lie about? And what vocal prowess? Screaming high notes and accessing high notes via Falsetto, which a lot of singers do? A girl who virtually has no resonance on her mid belts what so ever. Are you kidding? LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yes, I understand your point. Thank you for keeping your opinions 'civil' because I was willing and ready to "READ, DRAG & SHADE" that other 'Gaga' stan, including your 'fave' for almighty life. : - |

But yes, I wouldn't count her out just yet but her popularity is starting to become 'questionable' as is her artistry. I just wish she would, somehow, manage to compromise her 'Grand- Artistic Perspectives' with a persona that doesn't come across as so 'contrived'. You know? How long is she going to pedal her 'Pro- Outcast' theme?

I do believe that Gaga DID bring something 'fresh and unique' to 'Pop- Music', Circa. 2008 - 2011, but now... I'm not so sure. Compared to her 'The Fame/The Fame Monster/Born This Way' sales, 'Art-Pop is a GARGANTUAN FLOP. I'm not even sure when the album will be certified 'Tissue Paper' much less 'Platinum' this time around.

But, I respect her work ethic and commitment to her 'art'. The fact that she has broken so many industry records and garnered auch critical acclaim is a testament to her talents and abilities and I wish she would just stick to that. : - )

    ReplyDelete
  75. And many people found Gaga boring and derivative and copying Madonna.

And seriously dude, whereas Miley "practically" showed her ass at that MTV award show, Gaga at the same show DID show her ass. So it is a demonstration of your stan inspired kneejerk responses that you would go there.

ROFL at you trying to insult me through throwing insults at Miley.
That is no more going to work on me than your fellow stan throwing insult attempts straight at me.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Those big heroic voices can swoon a nigga... Its us banshee tenors who have the volume but the boyish upper ends (by us I mean me). LOL. And when I say banshee, I can give one a run for her money.... And there is nothing I lime more than a baritonal chest tone.

  79. Oh fudge! Absolute madness. Bruh, I could've lived without knowing that, honestly lol A MIDDLE SPLIT? My legs are in PAIN! Stop it now! lol You go to Church doing that and I almost guarantee they'll make it RAIN in there, that is of course if they have the balls to stay for your display lmao

    ReplyDelete
  80. Well, I'm gonna keep practicing till I get it right. LOL. But the middle split wasn't comfortable. When I heard my inner thighs pop I just slid all the way down and it was just insane. I kind of get a kick from the feeling of my bones being pulled out of their sockets...I know its strange but... Hell we're all on a music site free for all talking about our lives....LOL....

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'm not calling those people idiotic, I'm calling the ones who believe that you have to be BORN a certain way to have a certain preference because that simply isn't true. I think you can ALSO develop the preference because I know people who've transitioned into "Lesbians" (which disproves that theory). So I'm not saying the notion that you're born 'that way' makes you idiotic, I'm saying the notion that you HAVE to be born 'that way' (and that it's the only way) for one to have a homogeneous preference is idiotic. But bravo, nice of you to try and attempt to twist the veracity of that comment. Of course I can always count on you for that :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. LOL I know! Especially in math, since our math dept at our school is so outdated...
Key, I'm not sure exactly. I'm not good with songs with runs, I'm usually good with songs with longer belts if that makes sense.

Songs like Lying is the Most Fun a Girl can Have with her clothes off (Acoustic Version) is a good tessitura for me. A bit high when the belting kicks in, but still comfortable overall.

Demi Lovato songs are good for me, usually because she starts in her lower range. Though, I usually have to turn her songs down a whole octave. A few good songs are Skyscraper, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (w/o the complex runs).

P!nk songs are also surprisingly good for me, especially Just Give Me A Reason.

Almost is never Enough is a good ballad for me as well. If I sing Ariana's part, then I need to drop it down a whole octave.

For Nathan's part, I need to drop it about 1/3 of an octave (approx.)

  83. Personally speaking, I can understand the points that both you and 'Opie' are trying to make.

In regards to Opie's point: I honestly do believe that 'some' people feel/think that they were born with a 'specific' sexual-orientation. I have friends, and know people within the fashion/modelling industry of whom have told me that "they knew they were Gay from as young as 5/6 years of age".

In regards to your point: I, too, know people who have "transitioned" from one sexual-orientation to another. One of my closest friends (a Female) used to be 'Heterosexual' but is now a 'Lesbian' as she once found love in another Female and now they are all she is physically/sexually attracted to which is so weird.

For me, I believe that my orientation is, largely, psychological. I apologize if this makes you feel uncomfortable 'Sasuke' but I was 'Sexually Abused', on multiple occasions, for a brief period when I was 9/10 years old by a close family member (who is now Dead) and that, ultimately, is what has made me 'Bi-Sexual' today. Prior to the molestation, I can, honestly, say that I had never thought about Males in a 'sexual' way AT ALL ( I WAS heterosexual) but as I entered adolescence that all changed and I did start to think of males in THAT way. However, underneath it all, I still am deeply attracted to Women. Either way, I've learnt to accept who I am and, thus, receive numerous date offers/compliments from all genders. : - D

    ReplyDelete
  84. That is quite a topic. I generally dance around sexual orientation topics mainly because I have my beliefs and experiences. But as for the sexual abuse, I've experienced it multiple times and its a chapter of my life where I purposely skip over because I have a lot of anger and hostility surrounding it. As for that being a reason for different sexuality...IDK, when I think about it, I get riled up just to think that the human mind can me so fragile. Its a lot I can say about it but I'll just hold my tongue. I don't want to ruffle any feathers.

    ReplyDelete
  85. So, in layman terms, are you trying to say that you haven't told anybody yet?

Well, so did I. I never had any support as I had not told anybody for 10 years of my life (including my parents or any family members) - I can't explain to you the issues/problems I had. My life may be a pile of roses right now, professionally, but it wasn't always like this. Unfortunately, I believe, without sounding sanctimonious, what lead to my abuse was my "looks". I used to hurt, blame and punish myself all the time. I used to think it was both a 'Blessing' and a 'Curse'. But, overall, it makes perfect sense that you're angry - I still get angry, frustrated and infuriated, at myself and life, every now and then knowing that the Man (Family member) who did what he did to me was alive for all those years and I still didn't tell anybody, until he, ironically, died from a Brain Hemorrhage and it still took me two years to open up completely.

DUH. but she is definitely in that 70%. lol if you think KATY can sing better than Ariana, you are sadly mistakenly. i love katy i do, but i'm not about to act like they are even vocally. stop being a hater. everyone else in the world is accepting of her voice, whether they like her or not. i feel sorry for you because you're about to get ready to see sooo many posts & things of that nature about her having an amazing voice. God bless you.

  91. I told my mom early this year which lead to a big fight because she had suspected it earlier in my life and I always lied and said no the few times she did ask. There was a time when I was 7 and she thought I got molested and kept bombarding me with questions about it to the point that it got overwhelming and I lied and said I did and I almost got my step granddad in law in big trouble. And for lying, I still got in trouble which I don't think I deserved because my mom was so intrusive. I love my mom, but she never helps a problem...she always tends to make it worse so I never told her after than until I felt old enough to look after myself.

Also, since I came out the closet at school, people always want to know every single detail about being gay and it aggravates the living fuck out of me. I already hate being questioned period on any level by anyone but when those dumb ass girls at my school want to know every detail about my life like their my best friend, it pisses me off. All they do is go back and tell someone who they know I fucking hate and more mess gets started. So now, I try to keep this book closed and respectively tell them that I'm not going in depth about the details of me being gay. It pisses them off but I'm fine with it.

One day, I'll be able to talk about it like I talk about vocal pedagogy LOL, but that day is in a distant future.

All this does it make me realize I have a hell of a temper to work on. LOL.

  97. Well, it's almost as if we are long-lost Brothers. LOL.

I didn't tell my Mother until I was 19 - two years ago. She, too, had always 'suspected' as such largely because when I was younger - 8/11 - she says that there was always a 'different' aura about me when I was with or around 'that Man'. She says 'she sensed a change in my mood, behaviour and personality' whenever we were all together but she juat couldn't fathom what it was. She asked me, on several occasions, if he was "doing something to me or did stuff to me" and I would just outright lie as a quick defense because I was so afraid of the consequences. He also tried it on with twice when I was 15 but I managed to not let it happen and then when I was 16, he died. This Man was my 'Uncle'. However, according to my Grandfather, he had suspected that my Uncle was abused when he was in Jamaica as a child/teen to but he never found out the truth.

My Mom and your Mom is just alike in that respect.

So, what was it like 'coming out' to your Mom/Family? My Mom accepts it but my Dad doesn't sadly.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I don't know my dad very well and I wouldn't care for his opinion. My mom doesn't accept it at all. My grandma an aunt are the two people who are the most perceptive and they think I'll grow out of it. LOL.

  101. He's awesome too. I think Im a fan of the low baritone/bass voice. Im a light baritone and I hate it. No matter how hard I try I can't darken my voice lol.

    ReplyDelete
  102. LOL.

Well, the irony is that I used to 'dislike' how low my voice was but now I absolutely love it. As I've gotten older it has matured a great deal - it's 'Rich, Dark, Powerful and Full of Volume'. The only difficulty I have with my voice is its agility which I am sure you have in spades considering the fact that you are a 'Light- Lyric Baritone'. If your voice is 'naturally bright', I'm afraid there is now way to 'darken' it, per say, unless it's done artificially via. 'Forced- Low Larynx/Substance abuse' etc. - which, depending on how extensively you do it, can create a 'thicker/heavier' coloring - but even then that won't, neccessarily, darken your voice but just create absolute disruption in the fluidity between your mid/upper- chest registers, embed an unwanted rasp within your timbre and ruin your overall tonality. Look at 'Christina Aguilera' and 'Charice Pempengco'. LOL.

You can, however, hire a vocal coach/teacher and have him/her help you strengthen your lower register perhaps as well as create a 'healthy' dynamic resonance throughout.

Who would you say are your favorite singers? Listen to this Man's voice. ASTOUNDING.

  103. Everyone thought about the fact that Ariana's marketing-people might force her into the mini-mariah-mold just like they wanted to with "Put Your Hearts Up" (they thought since she is a teen-star, she had to sing this odd bubblegum-pop for children) so I don't get why everyone is developing such a hate towards her, it doesn't have to necessarily be her will to imitate Mariah....it might but it doesn't have to..

    ReplyDelete
  104. I would have enjoyed it better if she didn't:

    a) Have used a dress that mix chinese and japanese clothing on a totally japanese concept... It makes it look like she doesn't now they are different cultures and don't care. Considering I'm from a culture that is always getting this kind of treatment, this anoys the hell of me.

    b) Move around the stage with the grace of a drunk elephant with diahea... Seriously, if you can't move or dance like a geisha, don't try being a geisha.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Vinicius Ferreira Mendes26 November 2013 at 21:08

She mixed cultures up, like they were all the same or like she didn't care they are different from each other... It's like using elements from the USA to represent english people or mixing italian and french elements because "oh well, it's all Europe"

    ReplyDelete
  110. She was really pitchy, her belts were shouty at times and the visual were too much (although I like the flowers falling at the end). It also doesn't help that she inconsistent stage presence...let's not even talk about lyrics.

    ReplyDelete
  111. No she isn't, oh my goodness lmao. I never said I thought Katy was a better singer. I simply said her mid belts (B4/C5) are strong, which Ariana's voice as a whole isn't: strong. Jessica Simpson's belted a good F#5 before? Does that mean she's a good singer in general? Nope. Vocally, Ariana is better but better doesn't equate to good. Ariana's decent at best. People only hype Ariana up to be above average because most of the singers in the Industry are substantially below average. The girl is average at best.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Vinicius Ferreira Mendes26 November 2013 at 22:30

  116. I really don't dislike my voice and actually like light voices but theres a lack of masculine voices(from men) in music from what I hear. That's why I would want a more darker heroic sound rather than light. The guy above is good too.

Hahaha I don't wanna be like Christina at all. I use to be a fan of hers until I realized all the screaming she was doing, how disconnected her voice was...I can go on all day but I'll stop now.

My overall favorite singer would have to be Beyoncé (I use to hate her) but over the past couple of years I began to fall in love with her. Especially her performances when she's on stage singing (minus the dancing). If I had to go with a female singer I would have to say Tamia. Her light voice and tone is so soothing to me. My favorite male singer out now would probably be Luke James (and thats a HUGE probably)

  117. with 4 octave & the whistle register? decent? LOL. now that is comedy. she's on the verge or good & great. i cant say fully great because she has MUCH more to prove, & i want to hear her come into her own as an artist completely. but her voice.. the control, the range.. the resonance.. just.. you'll see. & one last thing: i highly doubt that critics would give her good reviews just because she has a good voice & others in pop today barely do. that would mean they are biased critics.... all of them, cause i haven't read a review yet that gave her lower than a B. thats the lowest i've seen. so decent at BEST? i could see if you said Good at best, because she is still a newbie & we need to see more. but DECENT? HUH???

    ReplyDelete
  118. Not to jump in but it is hard to fully connect 2 octaves let alone 4 octaves and Ariana struggles on that front. She has a thin lower register and no mid register when belting. She's good but I can't stand the fact that she's over-hyped.

    ReplyDelete
  119. oh my gosh, YOU again. she's not over hyped. i am very aware of the fact that she is not one of the greatest of all time singers. however, she is the greatest of THESE singers today, which is why why she receives such praise from fans. they miss a good voice [didnt say great], & she is just that. a good voice on it's way to greatness because she keeps improving. & even though fans rave over her, critics are truthful about her being good but not yet a great. so she is not over hyped. we are hype over HER.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Well, I am still in Paris but will be leaving home for London tomorrow night. The photo shoot session ended this afternoon and I am just in one of the fellow models hotel room relaxing - I'm using my phone to connect and talk. LOL. I have been to Paris five times before and so I am pretty much use to this part of the city.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience. I was was one of the few models chosen to walk in 'Chanel's, Annual, New Years Runway Gala' in January - I met Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour on Sunday, although for a brief moment. I was so, unbelievably, star-struck and nervous. 'Anna' is SO FIERCE. LOL.

I have a couple more Magazine outtakes and so I will send you them as soon as I can or they will be updated by my agency on my profile. The Magazine I shot for was 'Asos' by the way and the brand I ahot for was 'Mango'.

I, absolutely, adore and admire all things Medical. LOL. However, I am much more interested in the 'Mental Health' and the 'Psychological/Psychiatric' aspect of 'Medicine' as opposed to the 'Surgery' aspect. I also LOVE 'Forensic Science' and so forth.

    ReplyDelete
  121. It makes me giggle that my presence warranted that reaction from you. No she's not the greatest of these singers today. As of lately Demi Lovato has been singing to impress. Also, Jojo is a much superior singer... And yes IMHO, her vocal ability is over-hyped.

    ReplyDelete
  122. believe it or not, i respect your opinion. but the reason i said "you again" is because it seems like you're just hear to downplay her. & Demi? I FUCKING LOOOOVE HER. she is Ari's only mainstream competition. & uh.. who is jojo? when i said "pop music today" i mean mainstream singers. of course there are some irrelevant / underground / independent singers that can slay, but no one knows them.
with that being said, i love demi, like a lot. but demi has not been impressing lately. she has been too nasally lately & she keeps getting sick & needs her tonsils out. trust me it doesnt matter to me who wins between the 2 because both are in my 10 favs & of all my favs, they are the best singers. so if demi was better i would say so because i love her just as much. plus, demi has barely been performing live lately.... so... but obviously its between Demi & Ari.

  123. Which begs me to bring up the question "Why is Cultural Appropriation so bad to begin with?" Artists all over the world "Appropriate" cultures that differ from their own. Hell. Blues and Oldies could be traced back to African Americans in one way or another, yet I dont see anyone calling Elvis Presley or Allison Krauss culturally insensitive.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Bruh, her range is as disconnected as a bunch of scattered Leggos LOL! She uses FALSETTO live. Please, don't confuse whistle register and Falsetto lol As for control? What control? She has limited breath support, a disconnected range, disconnected runs, and has hit it or miss on pitch in the upper register and can't maintain a full scale or resonance. Control? Sike lol You want to see a true vocalist in Action? Listen to Beyonce in concert. She maintains resonance consistently throughout her performances, excellent breath support (while DANCING around constantly), and has connected, accurate, and clean/COMPLEX melisma. And then her use of Dynamics? I'm sorry, but Ariana is decent at best. She's better than most people in the industry but that's not worth the hype she's getting to MC. Ariana is purely a karaoke singer to me and until she showcases proficiency on a high degree, she's average.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Demi's at her best destroys Ariana. Jojo? HA! That girl will send Ariana to hell. Seriously? These people just don't know lol Hell, Lee Hai is a better singer if I'm going to be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Mainstream? WOW. And you had the nerve to argue she's 70% yet you're painfully unaware of some of the most of the other singers, who could outsing the hell out of Ariana? Bravo lol

    ReplyDelete
  127. it's too bad that you in the %3 of people that think all of what you just said :(. lol. & for the record, she has whistled live, lol. check her elln performance AND videos of her on the Listening Sessions tour she went on. oh & i know about Queen Bey, she's amazing. not a fav of mine but the ultimate performer.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Essentially it can be both, depending on the person of course. But, that just goes to show that being "born gay" isn't the only way for one's sexual orientation to be homogeneous.

And oh my goodness, that's awful. I'm almost at a loss for words, and that doesn't happen often. It really pains me to hear things like that. No one should ever be subject to that life style. I'm so happy you're in a better place because you don't deserve that at all. So you honestly believe that if that were to never happen, you'd be heterosexual?

    ReplyDelete
  129. jojo is not mainstream at all. AT..ALL. lol. i am saying that the reason fans go crazy over her is because of the MAINSTREAM singers, she is murdering. people of the world really only know the mainstream ones (like Katy, Gaga, Rih, Taylor) & i'm letting you know that since they only know of mainstream, who dont have voices as good (Gaga is a good singer, in a way).. they get excited to hear Ariana. someone like Ari or Demi or Adele or Jessie J gives them fresh air. nowww do get what i am pointing out? after seeing katy, taylor, rih, gaga, ke$ha (all who are in my top 10 favs), people get happy to see a good voice. i'm not saying ariana is a goddess, & i DEFINITELY not saying she can sing like mariah because well.. no one can. but i AM saying i think she is good ,& i'm explaining why she's hyped.

    ReplyDelete

  131. No, her performance of The Way on Ellen was Falsetto. Believe me, it CAN fool you. But Whistles and Falsetto have a very distinct quality. Those aren't Whistles. Studio, the notes above the 7th Octave C were whistles. But live? Falsetto, and she hasn't even song those higher 7th Octave notes live. Anyway, you think she's great. FINE. That's all you. As for myself? Hell no, she's not even remotely close lol

  146. I don't think ignorance equals disrespect perse.
Personally I doubt this act was designed by Katy herself. And likely it was some western born, raised and educated person.
Now let's be real Vinicius, Chinese and Japanese culture are incredibly vast and old and very different from western culture.
Of course to a western person most differences are not registered and it's not really realistic to expect serious research for a one of pop performance.
And anyway, regarding Europe..if I had a dime for everytime some American (a westener) thought Copenhagen is in The Netherlands (western city in western country), why, I'd be a much richer woman today than I am. ;-)

In short, imo one could call on ignorance here but I don't see anything more than that. And I feel it's quite a forgivable ignorance under the circumstances. :-)
Brian btw speaks from some personal experience when it comes to Asian culture. (Just saying :-) )

Sorry, but I see my culture going though the SAME thing when american or european media try representing it! We are almost always shown as an exotic pan-latino fiesta or a 3rd world country stereotype, usually, from pure laziness or prejudice, so, if it annoys me when it happens to my culture, I won't take it easy with Katy Perry. And it's not like I'm bashing her, I'm just saying her choreography was bad and her portray of culture innacurate (and this isn't "me" saying that, I read a lot of Japanese and Chinese descendants complaing about the same thing I'm pointing: She picked stuff to several cultures to represent only one like it was all the same thing.) And this annoys me as much as when people try representing Brazil with salsa, mambo, rumba or portraying brazilian people speaking Spanish.

If you are going to get stuff from other cultures, at least have the respect to take it right.

Meh, let the asshole be! xD

  150. Seeing as I am mostly represented by either milkmaids in wooden shoes or potheads, I understand what you mean. But I am afraid I don't have the same feelings or views on what that says or it's supposed effects. :-)
I do think that shows "racism" is not the correct term though. I personally really resent this new trend of equaling such matters as supposed "cultural appropriation" with "racism".

    ReplyDelete
  151. That would be my advise...don't waste too much time on him. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  152. BS! Katy Perry simply is a crap singer in reality. And a studio product.
Doesn't mean all singers are nor that It has any bearing on every live performance by every singer.

    ReplyDelete
  153. i do agree about sticking to her talents and abilities but i think that her flamboyant clothing is of her own and not derivative of other artists
sure you can compare some individual pieces with those that other stars have worn but it doesnt mean shes copying them - because like pop music, fashion is all a cycle that borrows from ideas and concepts that came before
let us just wait and see

also thank you for not dismissing her impact during the past five years :)
pop music is very fickle and crowns a new queen very frequently - maybe gaga will have her throne back a few months or years from now

    ReplyDelete
  154. She was actually in the Timber video, but I agree with you. She's actually alluded in her reality show and interviews to the fact that Dr. Luke and her management suppresses a lot of her creativity. Some of her favorite songs haven't made it onto her records because they weren't marketable enough. There's a whole #FreeKesha campaign going on in the pop cultureverse. Recently someone tweeted if she was dropped from RCA and she responded "hope so" (tweeted was deleted soon for obvious reasons). Her collab album with The Flaming Lips (Lip$ha) was also cancelled most likely for this reason, although she's stated she still wants to release the material, even for free.

  155. i think this is the first performance of this song that i've heard where she belted the F#5 the right way. and i loved her dancing and the head notes at the end

  159. OMG I'm seriously sick of douches like you critisizing Mariah for everything. Yes, bitch, we know it wasn't PERFECT but it was still fucking amazing. You're just mad because she slayed your faves hard. I hate how people are so much more critical of Mariah and diss her yet claim to be fans in some wierd attempt to seem unbiased and holier-than-thou. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Sweetie, I don't believe in singers "slaying". WTF is that all about? "slaying" is what butchers and soldiers do.

The more singers deliver great performances, the better imo.

This performance, however entertaining, simply was not "flawless" and it was in many instances, understandably, her copping out.

My faves btw are singing very different styles.
So even if I would be as childish and /or the kind of philistine who sees singers as being in the business of "slaying" other singers, nobody in his right mind would pit them against a singer in a different style.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Anyway, if you are seriously sick of critics, I suggest you confine your internet visits to Mariah fan sites only instead of a general music blog.

Just a friendly advice to one who, so it seems, is unable to come to that obvious conclusion by himself. :-)

  162. You forgot to mention Artpop was sold for $6 on Amazon, half the price of other female popstars.
There are still plenty of tickets available for Roseland. Still, if she was not able to fill 7000 seats venues anymore, she would be really over.
Dwuw climbing up in the charts? Mommy doesn't write for the charts! Still, Itunes charts? Really? What about Billboard, where Dwuw debuted at #13 and dropped at #58 on its second week? (Although everyone knows Billboard is completely fucked up, considering youtube views etc. for their charts)
Finally, you could not have known it then, but look at Gaga's big tank in the ratings with her Muppet appearnce.

Those are only facts, not something made up to make her look bad.

  163. I may be one of the 10 people on this site who liked the album ArtPop though would never buy it

    ReplyDelete
  164. Best performance from her in a while lol. Her tone is just beautiful

    ReplyDelete
  165. hmm... mind pointing to what part this is? the part i think it's happening she's hitting a cheeky whistle on purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Sounds more like her voice accidentally breaking into whistle register than a cheeky note. Based on how rough her voice sounds as she tries to go up, it's not a big stretch to guess that that whistle may have been unintentional.

    ReplyDelete
  167. I was very sadden by this too. If they weren't going to go all out why did they bother?

  171. I think it's smart to not spend money on useless promo. People don't even buy albums anymore unless they are big fans, and big fans know when the albums of their faves are coming :P.

Actually, yes, to give an actual technical assessment of something you gotta be rather proficient at it. One cannot say "well, it wasn't flawless (good)" you gotta say WHY, otherwise it is a worthless comment. Everybody has an opinion, but not everybody's opinions are worth the same.

You seem very sad and frustrated, don't you have something else besides the internet? Maybe a job or a husband or children or grand children? Seriously.

  174. Why...you are always civil William! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  175. It is so hostile lately I am just like lord, why?

    ReplyDelete
  176. Well, you know me William, I like to discuss hard. But I do also feel that lately a couple of people seem to think personal insults constitute argument.
I admit, when I run into those, I often don't succeed in staying civil either. :-(
Trust me , I AM trying to do. :-)

I like the performance, although it has its problems, although i hate her over artistic mind at times, etc etc. Opinion given, bye, not open for discussion with any of the mentioned sides.

  180. It's not your responsibility to keep his love for the blog, that's Diva's work. Yours, however, is to remain polite and avoid using that offensive language which does nothing but proving your lack of matureness. Do you disagree with something that's been said in here? Fine, but please do the favour to express it in a polite way and try not to make fake and baseless assumptions of other people's lives. Lovely definetly wasn't too polite either, but you're being way too disrespectful.
