[Free Music] JoJo vocally Slays On New Mixtape "#LoveJo"

JoJo is feeling the love today and has decided to spread it around by giving us a very special valentine's day gift: a new mixtape, #LoveJo.

I've had a brief nosy through the four song set- I don't have time right now to give it a proper whirl- but even still, with those little tasters, it is more than apparent that JoJo has stepped up the vocals. I didn't think it was possible for her to bring anything new, vocally, but it sounds to me as if the singer is still growing, and refining, her instrument.

I'll comment again with my thoughts on the mixtape once I've had a proper listen, but I wanted to make sure I shared it with you on the actual day of release- since it ties in with Valentines.

Take a listen to the loved-up set below. You can also download each song FOR FREEEEEEEEEEE!

  2. Well, she definitely SLAYED alright; I thoroughly enjoyed her 'Caught Up In The Rapture' cover.

    BUT. BUT. BUT, those Head-Notes [3: 06 - 3: 29] on 'Take Me Home'.......

  3. Oh my goodness! The chills man, the chills! I know JoJo can sing but... she SANG and SLAYED! If she gets the recognition she deserves, soon JoJo's going to slay artists (*cough* *cough* Ariana Grande) out of this universe!

Glory is so beautiful! Her voice it's amazing already, but this is just another level of singing! She deserve all the recognition, all the awards... Everything! Go Jojo!

  5. I come from a very reserved traditional Chinese family... My mum basically said "There are girls out there for you! Why aren't you liking girls?" (In her defence, her tone was a bit humorous.

My dad basically just refuses to say anything.

But it's better than casting me out right? They still treat me like their own son and while not really satisfied, gotta be grateful!

Anyways, congrats on coming out! :)

  6. Well I'm glad you're not cast out haha. I guess a little silence from your father is better than a legitimately dangerous position for you.

  7. My school choir did "Valentunes" where we can send each other essentially singing telegrams. I was one of the messengers, so I basically spent all day singing Love on Top and Baby I, so my voice is kinda sore, but I guess those are my love songs at the moment. I'm all about festive upbeat declarations of attraction.
My mind goes straight to Mariah when I think of breakup songs tho, We Belong Together is a classic and Art of Letting Go is still vibing with me. Adele and Marina & The Diamonds also have some great breakup songs.

  8. I'm totally vibing with the whole chill R&B feel. The beat on track three is amazing and I loved the sprinkling of big high belts. I'm so ready for the album.

  9. She DEF did that. I'm still dying over here. *Brandy's voice: "GLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWRRRAY!"* Didn't know she still had it in her. Seemed as though she lost part of her range and clarity over the years. Guess I was wrong, at least partially.

  10. I have always loved Jojo. This makes me love her more. Her voice has gotten so much better and it is only going to get better with age. I am excited for her new music. She's arguably the best this generation has as far as vocalists are concerned.

  16. When her voice dropped she had trouble adjusting her mix (which was never too solid to begin with, she relied a bit on youth) so she lost some of her top notes, but since she's been seeing a coach things have cleared up :)

  21. I just whipped this up now. Has anyone noticed how her belts have an almost classical technique similar to opera singers in glory? It's weird.

the head notes in GLORY are spectacular
shes growing alright and i really hope she gains the recognition she deserves

    ReplyDelete
  23. I understand why you posted it. It's just too limited a way imo to really assess whether I like a singer. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Damn, that Glory song is spectacular!! I definetly don't see it as a sigle or a #1, but I can tell that is gonna be in my "most played" playlist!

  25. Wait, do you actually do that in the USA? I thought it was just a little silly idea from Glee ._.

Gotcha. I would suggest you some performances by her where, IMO, she sings like a goddess. For example:

WOW, huge improvement. I always thought she was a decent singer, but before she was trying hard to ghost Christina Aguilera, and her material was never stellar. Now, this is something. The quality and clarity of her voice have increased.

  35. Only three songs, and one of them was an intro...if this is a glimpse of what an album from her would sound like under her new record label good lord. Her and Tori Kelly have similar timbers and weight to their voice. Coincidentally, they're both princesses at vocal runs (MC was the queen lol).

Artistically, she reminds me of Frank Ocean.

    ReplyDelete
  36. She's so freakin' hilarious! A pitty that she didn't do Celine, it's her best impression alongisde Christina's. The only one's I didn't like were Adele, Kelly and Demi, I don't feel like she really nails them like the others :S

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well my school's been doing it for years before Glee even did it. But a lot of schools that my friends go to don't do it. So I'd like to think we're very innovative, trendsetting people.

  44. Anthony and the Johnsons! :D..I'd only ever heard of them through Clare Maguire when she covered it. I think I like hers better, just because it was the first time I heard it, and it just kinda sticks with you haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuTfEO6X_-c

I think she's a Contralto.. and her new stuff is amazing,:D she has a free mixtape out. Go get it! :D

  45. I know this has, absolutely, nothing to do with this post but I just wanted to ask a question: I'm auditioning for a musical in my town next week wednesday and I want to sing Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You but seeing as I am contralto, do you think that song would be hard for me to sing? It seems as if most sopranos fail at that song too, so I dont know how it would sound for me. Is it ahard song to sing? Thank you so much everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  46. You mean Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You". ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi there. Well, no, as a 'Female Singer' (whether developed or undeveloped) the song should not be hard for you to sing 'note-wise'. The only difference would lie within the sound of your timbre but that is because Whitney was a Spinto-Soprano and you're a Contralto thus your vocal dynamics/mechanics are extremely different to hers.

The vocal range needed to sing Whitney's version of 'I Will Always Love You' spans just shy of two octaves: G3 - F#5 (C#5).

The Lowest Note in the song is F#3. The Chorus' are Belted within the Upper- 4th Octave: A4 - 1st Chorus & B4 - 2nd Chorus. There is a brief C#5 sung during the Last Verse whereas the head-notes in the song fluctuate between F4-E5 throughout but the highest note in the song, overall, is a sustained F#5 - Last Chorus [the two final "You's"...]

All in all, this song requires EXCELLENT breath control, a seamless connection between ones chest & head voice as well as the ability to execute fast, melismatic, vocal runs/riffs in order to do "Whitney's version" justice - three things of which she had in SPADES during her prime. Good luck. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. why that glory song remind me of whitney

    ReplyDelete
  49. Me too! I always thought she was a decent singer but hearing this, I've been proven wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  50. As Devonte said, the problem is not that much the range (I don't know how high contraltos usually get, but I'll guess your top chest note you'd dare to hit live is an E%) but the ability of switching from hed to chest and the melismatic control. Therefore, I would recommend you to choose another song. Some suggestions I would make are songs by Cher (whos' a contralto as well) like "Believe" or "You haven't seen the last of me". Something by Evanescence could also sound great for a low, dark voice like yours, "Going under" has nice low notes and barely goes into the 5th octave in belting, but if you feel like challenging yourself a little bit more, Lithium would be an awesome choice to show off. It has lows you'll feel really comfortable with and the highest belted note is an Eb5, adding also an F#5 in falsetto. If you can sing that song, you'll really get to impress whoever is judging you.

You could also try some Adele songs or trying to lower (quite a lot) the tone in Demi Lovato's "Lightweight" because the song doesn't relly require much agility and is great to show some straight belts off. You could also try some Journey songs in the original key since Steve Perry's voice was the one of a very high tenor. "Faithfully" and "Open arms" could be great choices. Same with Bon Jovi's "Always".

  51. I hated her intro of rapture due to my love of Anita Baker but I loved it by the end despite that

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeah I wasn't a fan of the pauses but the vocal was strong and that's all that mattered.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Okay so I'm gonna be talking about Pixie Lott and her latest single, "Nasty" that was taken from Xtina and Cee-Lo. Apparently it was originally meant for Lotus but was not included due to it not fitting the rest of the album. Having listened to Christina's version the same week it was released back in 2011, I just don't find Pixie's version "nasty" enough. It's just so sweet.

    Pixie's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7POcRxmpHQ
    Christina Ft. Cee-Lo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da1a6iXEaE8

Sure, Christina's was a bit messy and rough but I still think it was better because of her fierce vocals and it suits her range more (well, at least back when she had a decent one).

  54. OMG, she was my favorite from the show too! I wish she could have gone further in the show but lets be frank... These shows are totally useless now.

  57. I'm a musical chameleon, I listen to pretty much every music genre and style under the sun (that's an exaggeration) depending on my mood, and I do enjoy Amy Lee and Evanescence!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Here's a longer clip, I do like her voice too! Let me clarify; I don't think her voice is ugly at all either I just can't really say anything truly defining about her voice since she only sing other people songs and subsequently, it's not very unique to me despite her having and incredible technique and all-around great voice :)

  60. For being done in one of the worst vocal eras of her career, that song is one of her strongest vocally.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I really enjoy these. As a male singer it becomes surprisingly easier to hear the little ticks on female voices when the pitch is lowered. The distance between notes sound less dramatic and more surreal (if thats the right word...). For example Christina Aguilera's vocal imperfections become much more noticeable in the lowered versions of her songs. Mariah and Whitney however retain their strong voices throughout. Crazy.

So I re established my Youtube channel for covers and stuff, just for fun. I guess I'll share this one. It's pretty pitchy when Im going lower but I'm improving. I'm trying desperately to avoid the Mariah covers but for some reason im most comfortable with songs that are really rangey. Must be the influence of listening to her for too long lol.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I also think, regardless whether she is dancing or not...with some serious vocal lessons she could be a better singer. I agree there's obviously more potential there and she could do better than she is doing now.

    ReplyDelete
  64. OK, the vocals on Mariah's "Through The Rain" slay careers tbh.

I wish people would realize how much potential Miley really has. She sang this song pretty well, and I'm not too sure why people dislike it so much. I'm guessing it's all of the Arctic Monkey fans who hate the idea of the Miley covering a song, lol which really isn't that sacred altogether. It was a decent cover, especially when she starts belting around 2:15. That did it for me and I love the color of her belting range.

  66. I'm curious to know if anybody else has come across these auto-pitched versions of songs sung by Female singers to suit a Male voice on YouTube? Here are two by Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey: I Will Always Love You & Forever. The former is definitely suited for a 'Rich & Powerful- Baritone' voice and sounds like a two-way hybrid of 'Peabo Bryson & Luther Vandross' whereas the latter is suited for a 'High/Light- Tenor'; one with an incredible mixed- belting technique along with excellent tonal dynamics and sounds like a two-way hybrid of ''Brian McKnight & Wanya Morris'. I think they're excellent. LOL. Which one do you like best?
