[New Music] Mariah Carey - "You're Mine"

No sooner had Mariah Carey performed her Valentine-due, new single You're Mine at the 2014 BET Honors, no sooner was it leaked onto the internet. Hardly a surprise, but I'm sure Mimi is a little vexed by it happening. But since it's here, we might as well take a listen.

Her new single is Rnb, through and through. It brings to mind Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel's glorious H.A.T.E.U, while simultaneously containing a little motif that had me digging up Alicia Keys' Like You'll Never See Me Again.

This "live" recording of the third single to be lifted from Carey's new album, The Art Of Letting Go, doesn't feature much of the Diva's trademark melisma- which seems to be something of a theme with this project. However, it does have some octave jumping at the song's climax. This starts on a chest note (D5), which transitions up a register to a whistle note (E6). From this high, the diva then drops to a D6, holding it until the track ends. Impressive stuff.

Though quite a good recording of You're Mine, I'm still excited to hear it in its mastered form. Not long to wait now...

  1. I like it. I just don't like the nasal/husky tone of her voice when she's not whispering.

    ReplyDelete
  2. yeah, it has taken a turn to a more nasal delivery. She's been doing that for awhile.

It doesn't sound like she's out of her limits here for it to be live?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I like it. I'm not particularly sure how it well fare commercially speaking [especially if she's looking a "#1 Smash- Hit"] but it has potential. It does sound like an 'E=MC2/Memoirs...' B-Side, however, but it's sweet and soothing nonetheless. All in all, 2:35 - 2:55 was the most interesting part of the song for me - she sounded incredible but I still very much DOUBT this was live. I hope this era goes well for her and I can't wait to hear the HQ version.

    ReplyDelete
  4. The smooth transition from her belting voice to her whistle register was pretty outstanding. I still prefer the Art of Letting Go, though.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Let's all be honest: It wasn't live. Do we want to hear it live? No. Her voice has become so brittle and frail and she's probably resting her voice for some big event or anything like that. I loved it. Sure, it's not gonna be a #1 in the Charts, but she herself said that she now only does music for her and her fans. She has already proven herself with 18 #1 Smash-Hits which I find quite respectable

    ReplyDelete
  6. That's true, and I'm not disputing the fact that she no longer cares about Chart quantities, but Mariah is still a "Mainstream, Corporate- owned, Recording Artist" [regardless of her influential- 24 year status within the industry] and from a business standpoint her record label will indeed HOPE that her single/album sales are "above average" per say, this time around, in comparison to her three previous era's, as will she herself, in order to gain a profit. Also, artistically speaking, I still very much prefer 'The Art Of Letting Go' as opposed to this but I'm sure she has great things to bring forth.

Well, it looks as if I'm not the only one in agreement that this wasn't live then - not to mention the fact that she sang this song atop of a Grand Piano. LOL.

  7. Im fairly certain it isnt completely live, but im also starting to not care. She sounds great and i Love the song. :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. YAWN. Can't she change it up a little, this song is boring as hell but she sounds good. Nothing special though.

  9. Sorry I know this isn't relevant I was going to ask next Friday but I need an answer by Thursday. I am a female with a vocal range of b2-c5. I rarely sing higher notes as they are thin and weak, but I can resonate well with lower notes and only sometimes strain with a b2. What would my voice be classified as? Again sorry if I annoyed everyone I know this isn't relevant.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh no the song is gone.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Here are a few questions so we can help you
Where are you most comfortable in your range?
    What's your belting range?
If you could describe what singer your voice resembles the most, who would it be (just so we can get an idea of color, weight, and timbre)

    ReplyDelete
  12. disclaimer: I know very little about music and have just recently started singing, so forgive me if I get something wrong :)
I'm most comfortable singing in the lowest part of my voice, about up to a C4, I can belt up to an A4, but tend not to sing above that because the quality isn't good (I need vocal training to strengthen my head voice and breath control)
I'm not really sure about singers, I like to separate my voice into 3 sections: B2-C4, D4-A4, B4-C5 (I know I could extend the last one with training)
In the lowest two sections I'd say I can sound like Lorde, Tori Kelly, or Xenia, but I can get a clearer tone that that in the middle. I'm a little bit raspy naturally but depending on the notes I can change it a little. My last section just sounds like weak falsetto

    ReplyDelete
  13. Due to your limitations alone and your natural comfort in the lower female octaves, I would say a contralto. It's hard to make that definite since neither Lorde or Tori Kelly's lows are dark or heavy enough for a contralto voice.

You also said you haven't had much training and you just started singing? Well, maybe you should give it more time. I wanna say Mezzo with an extended range, but it's hard to tell right now. If you could record scales or something and post it here, that would be great.

    ReplyDelete
  14. My examples were more in terms of tone? In terms of weight I really don't know, partly because the term confuses me and I can't differentiate well when I hear it. If it helps I went to one lesson with Gordon Grody (he said he worked with Alicia Keys), and he told me I had a warm, emotive voice but said I lacked control and resonance when I went too high.
I'm going to an audition of sorts where everyone has to sing "New York State of Mind", but in whatever key you like. I'm starting the song on an E3.
I can't really record right now- I'm sick as a dog so I'm trying to rest so I can do well, I also think I'll just sound terrible right now.
Thanks for helping me! I really appreciate it

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm leaning towards contralto, then. Good luck with your audition!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hmm, I really don't know. It's sometimes hard to tell with Mariah if it's live or not.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Mariah's never gonna pull this off live. In fact, I'm sort of doubting she has much of a 'live' voice anymore. But who cares? Lambs have to be deluded nowadays anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  18. it's live, you cunt. Shut the fuck up.

    ReplyDelete
  19. you've returned..

    ReplyDelete
  20. She has a pretty decent live voice when she's well rested. I mean, I'm praying for node surgery as much as the next person, but for what she is capable of doing, she does it very well. The only times she's pissed me off more than a little has been during the times she's lipped something that she had more than enough time to prepare for, and that seems to be a LOT less than she did back in 2006-2010. I may be defending her, but that's only because she does in fact sing live most of the time nowadays.

  21. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qRHDkM5Wac

For those who really still wanna watch it adn weren't able to find it.

I think it's great. Seems that she can't really let go afterall :p
It's smooth and brilliant but it feels like it's a very typical Mariah song following the formulas of E=MC² and Emancipation of Mimi. Not hating the song, and I know she stated that this is for herself and the fans... but I wanna see something solid and BOLD.

    ReplyDelete
  22. HAHAHA, whatever you say babe. I'm sure a dellusional, pitiable lamb like you, that looks more like a brutally sodomized chimpanzee knows better. Someone must've been dropped a few times as a baby.

    ReplyDelete
  23. well never say never. even though we all are skeptical of Mariah nowadays, doesn't mean it will be like that for the rest of her career. i know that she can still bring it, we just have to wait

    ReplyDelete
  24. Probably a mezzo, contralto voices don't usually mature 'til their 30s.
I've only personally seen 2 contraltos that are young, both were Russian singers, respectively 18 and 22.
    The 22 year old http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzIkXuqlCl0
And the 18 year old http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRtOuEeeRrA

    ReplyDelete
  25. Update in case anyone was wondering: I panicked last night and called around the city to find a vocal teacher that would see me today. She taught me some exercises and told me with proper training I could have an extensive vocal range, but only if stopped using bad technique on the outer reaches of my registers. My usable range is now: Bb2-F5, but I can reach down to C2 through vocal fry, and possibly I could eventually actually be able to use those notes, as well as some higher ones. She told me I was a contralto, but that I should identify as a mezzo until I was older and more certain of my range. Thanks for everyone's help!

And while we're at it, am I the only one thinking, that Camilla is extremely overrated with her messy runs and squeaky voice and Ally superbly UNDERrated?

    ReplyDelete
  31. LMAO that gif :)))exactly!camila is overrated and i think reason behind it is that her voice sounds more unique than it really is and shines when we hear it after 4 girls and it affect people more but i'm damn sure if she ever sing a whole song it would be boring and oh tbh ally is synonym of underrate

    ReplyDelete
  32. warning-don't listen to it with head phone

    ReplyDelete
  33. tbh I find her voice a tad annoying. And about the runs; that girl is worse than Xtina. She over-oversings every single line of hers. It's just annoying. Maybe her personality has to do with that hype too.
Oh yes. Her and Dinah, although, no. She gets quite some recognition. Ally though, could slay half of all the Bilboard-chicks :/

    ReplyDelete
  34. actually you do have a point, singers personalities really affect their popularity and if i remember correctly during xf camila had revealed that she's fan of 1d,demi and ed which maybe had made her all these fanbases fave and also she's a total fangirl so i think teenagers relate to her more

    ReplyDelete
  35. Normani has a great range but I can't find anything particularly exciting about her voice, nor is she as skilled as her fellow band members. :/

    What's so good about her?

    ReplyDelete
  36. you said it yourself "her range" is what's good about her,and also i think she have lots of potential which she hasn't shown yet wait for their album they're getting r&b route and i'm damn sure she'll out shine them all

    ReplyDelete
  40. Is she really improving? I watched this and cringed during the last 30 seconds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiVlL22fg8U I'm no vocal expert but I think she sounds a lot better when she's not straining for high notes… Like here: https://www.keek.com/!D8mIdab she sounds lovely! I love the new bluesy, jazzy vibe she's got going on with some of her new live songs. If she stops trying so hard to be a mini Xtina, I think she could be a HUGE pop artist.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Can we take a moment to honor Whitney, who passed away two years ago, today?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTde57IpibM

    ReplyDelete
  42. Damn. Girl actually does sound better than she's ever been.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I loved Don't Forget, and Quiet by her. But the whole big rock inserts just bug me. I wish she'd done them in more recent eras, where we could have luscious strings or quiet synths instead of crunchy guitars.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not sure if it's just the way the song is- because admittedly, I've never heard the studio version- but she sounds pitchy and drony.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Toni sounds gorgeous as always.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yeah, she's often off key. She's definitely less pitchy in the studio track...the ending was cringe inducing in my opinion 2:45 :(

To be honest, those classifications are not really meant for untrained voices. And it seems so far you have only been singing with your chest and lower middle register. Maybe once you develop your voice further you will find you might be a mezzo soprano, even a dramatic soprano, who knows. But trying to estimate a voice type without hearing it, that is also under developed, is like trying to guess a color you've never seen.

You could probably be a natural male alto, it's entirely possible, though rare. Is your speaking voice sort of androgynous?

There have been a couple of male altos or natural male sopranos, but they are rare. For example Michael Maniaci.

  52. No I did not. My mind is still working fine thanks but you might want to work on your comprehension. :-)
What Renee Fleming said about operatic voice is beside the point. I am pretty sure she didn't add what you did nor meant to say with it what you used that little factoid on operatic voices for. Nor did she therefor add that little list of names.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Neither statement is a correct depiction of what occurred.
But I am sure that is how you experienced what happened. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Btw once again a response not to the post you replied to.
On the other hand..it IS yet another attempt of your ego to compensate.
So I guess in a roundabout way...it is connected. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  55. No they did not. You clearly fail to understand the difference between what the studies said and what you stated.
Which is understandable as you also fail to understand the difference between science and speculative conclusions.

"The truth is, if you are a lesbian, you will not find masculine traits in a man attractive. It's simple to understand."

Yes it is. Which is why it is what I consistently stated. You lost the plot again didn't you?
Point was dude...you are a male and therefor in the same position as this lesbian when it comes to what the subject actually was. Namely....what straight women find attractive in men.
You trying to use my being a lesbian against me was therefor an illogical choice of you at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  56. " a name that sounds like someone on welfare"
Yep dude YOU know logic. ROFL

  58. I don't check out range videos when I want to know whether I like a singer. I check out songs.
And I did and she sounds good to me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Love Brandy's song as well. Both are great songwriters.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKCZkFBCwZQ

    ReplyDelete
  60. Actually, it was once again not what you originally stated and I responded to. It's you paraphrasing yourself in such a way again that it significantly changes your original statement.

I thought for sake of argument, I'll try to ignore that.
However..I find I just cannot let that kind of fancy footwork go without pointing at it and saying.."look at the pretty dancing!"

And for truth sake, what you actually said was (before you edited it to "someone like you" that is)
"I doubt a lesbian knows what is attractive on a man"
And you said that regarding articles about what straight women find appealing in men.

The two statements are not only not the same, neither, in it's own right, is correct.

She is one of the best, if not the best, among Filipino singers.

  83. Primo Uomo Assoluto15 February 2014 at 06:12

Well, the range video was not to show her range but to show that she has a solid sound up and down, which is in fact rare. In operatic singing, because it is unamplified, many voices only project about 1.5 octaves consistantly well at a time. For example, the great Joan Sutherland could project her soprano notes beautifully in high coloratura, but when the vocal line would go down to chest voice, the voice would disappear. On the other hand, when singing things without need for high notes, she could project her low chest tones very nicely.

    ReplyDelete
  84. This is just freaking awesome. I was planning to send you this link months ago, in fact. This is one of my favorite songs ever, this version, not the others. Two giants of American music, both from the Midwest, Benny from Chicago and Peggy from Jamestown, North Dakota. It really doesn't get better than this. I love everything about this song. A masterpiece. After savoring it again, I listened to some related vidoes of Peggy from later in her career -- "Is That All There Is?" and "Fever," both live perfs. No Auto-Tune back then, y'all! ;D

    ReplyDelete
  85. Thank you for this. I have never heard this before. This is amazing. I give Peggy credit for sheer balls to get onstage with these women, because as much as I love her, she's more of a stylist than someone with the "Go Big" power of Vaughn, Flack and, especially, Aretha. Aretha is so powerful that she goes big without any evidence of strain. She just tosses it off like it's nothing. Imagine if she decided to unleash a full broadside!

If we had a time machine and could send back any modern diva to try and stand up to these women, who would we send? If I was Beyonce's manager, I would physically restrain her from even making the attempt. And Mariah? No way. Mariah has a nice voice, but she made a huge mistake on that one Christmas special when she invited her mom, a trained opera singer, to join her. Her mom has a 16-inch gun in her throat and made Mariah sound thin, squeaky and weak. I know it's apples and oranges, but still, I don't think that would have happened to Aretha. ;)

So maybe, I dunno, Jennifer Hudson? Xtina? And we have to remember, when this video was filmed, there were other heavyweights out there -- Streisand, Martha Reeves, Darlene Love, Minnie Ripperton, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight . . . ah, those were different days.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Those were different days indeed and no auto tune and most other technicalities used to make singers sound better these days either.
In fact, in those days "studio singer" meant someone who is a professional back ground singer.

I'd say we could sent Kelly and/or Anouk in your time machine.

Nope, I personally didn't like this performance at all. Infact, I thought it was awful. Listening to it just pains my throat lol It tenses up at those tight ass pinched C#5s lol But I did enjoy her energy on stage, it was very crowd inducing which is always an excellent achievement as a performer. It easily compensated for her awful vocal delivery of the song :D

  92. Stop Lowering Please21 February 2014 at 04:32

I'm getting quite annoyed by her constant larynx lowering now. I really miss when she just sung naturally; her Unbroken era was undeniably her BEST vocal era. Yes, her lower range may have been weak back then, but her belts were so clean and crisp. The DEMI era is just full of cringe-worthy notes and I've also noticed she hasn't been singing certain long notes and rather cutting them short to take a breath. Her stamina seems to be diminishing for whatever reason... Anyways, it's probably pointless to write this on a forum because nothing will change, but i'm just stating the fact that Demi's technique is not what it used to be.

    ReplyDelete
  93. There are rumors that she is working with a vocal coach. And you need to listen to a video from the Neon Lights Tour. It's abit better. I actually prefer her in her 2008-2010. She was less pitchy, and her tone was sweeter.

    ReplyDelete
  94. She does sounds different in her.. or maybe its her background singers singing while she's skipping a lot of lyrics from the song lel

  103. its just a cover glee did where demi got lots of solos and she literally slayed them, try to open it in new tab or on youtube just search "the happening glee"

    ReplyDelete
  104. oh and don't watch the version glee uploaded on their channel they cut many high notes demi did

    ReplyDelete
  105. why demi's sounding so different?

  106. That F#5 was not too good...

  107. A lot of posts from the site need to be redone. I was planning to help DD with Amy Lee's and with this.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Now I can see it. Something is really off about it. They edited her voice so much for it like they just wanted it to be theatrical rather than how it is naturally. I do at least hear some of the little quirks that make it Demi's.

    ReplyDelete
  111. not even close. personally i think her best performance of NL is on jay leno

  112. I don't get why people are saying she's improved so much this tour and sounds perfect.
I don't hear any different from that pitchy 2013 era, maybe just a bit. but all I'm thinking while I'm watching her performances from now Is how amazing she sounded in her previous live performances! (2011-2012, same about 2008-2010 even) I just really want her voice to get back to that, although voice changes with time.. but about what happened to her voice now I'm guessing has to do with the tonsils surgery. I just hope she'll sound better on the future of this tour!

BTW when are you updating this page? her vocal range is C#3-E6 and you should change her 2008 picture to something more updated (2012-2014) you should also change the yellow text cause I can't see anything lol. and to remove the video links you put and put these ones instead they're great:

  115. you're right. not only that, she cant even sing anymore her own songs and handle high notes! at least in 2013 she could.

    ReplyDelete
  116. She is doing better than late 2013/post surgery, but she's been really sick lately. That's the thing. Girl gets sick A LOT.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I really love the rasp she's attained, though. She didn't have as much of a rasp pre surgery, so there's something.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I see quite a few people claiming that 2013 has been her worst year. I mostly agree, but there have also been performances where she just totally SLAYs. I've also been noticing that she sings her old songs (the ones before her DEMI album) with mostly healthy technique, maintaining her natural tone and NOT sounding like her vocal chords are about to snap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JFL9hF4E-A
Her performance of Get Back in this video is exactly what i'm talking about; she sounded so great and I wish she would implement the same kind of technique for all of her songs.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Yeah it was presurgery. Her voice and technique started going down after surgery, but she's getting back and she's using moreso her natural voice now, doing better runs, better belts(imo), etc.. She's also accompanying it with more subtlety rather than relying solely on belts. What's getting in the way is her illness. And supposedly she had the surgery because she'd get sick a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  120. not on this era. her vocals were amazing at her black hair. from there she was off

    ReplyDelete
  121. I kind of agree and disagree cause since 2014 shes almost not hitting her high notes and sustained notes at all. at least in late 2013 she did.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Do you think she's coming back gradually past her sickness these days? She did work with a vocal instructor.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I believe she will, I know she's working with a vocal coach I just don't know if she's still working with him. Sill haven't lost hope for some awesome vocals in the few next concert in this tour

  127. You are judging both Charlotte and Katherine's present not properly educated "operatic skill" where as when it comes to the ones you named you are judging them on SUPPOSED skill after proper education. It's called using double standards.

My point re "contemporary" was that if you go by it meaning non classical...your list is still ridiculously limited considering all the singers who sang "contemporary" music professionally.
And was your claim that list is of the " Only a handful of contemporary vocalists (who) could ever have careers in the operatic field".

Those "specific reasons" you gave in the comment I responded to were
" an operatic voice must be perfectly even and FULLY SUPPORTED through at
least 2 full octaves and delivered with warm as well as resonant tones. "

Which is basically listing what indeed the education for opera singing is aimed at. Comes down to you saying an operatic voice can sing by operatic standard.
You then claimed of all non classical singers who ever worked professionally, ONLY the few you mentioned COULD have done that IF they had followed a training for operatic singer.
THAT dude, is simply a silly and factually incorrect claim.

Even though I have no music education as you feel the need to point out utterly beside the point again...yes, I CAN say what I say based on the observation that every year all over the globe thousands of singers graduate who are able to do exactly that!
Be "perfectly even and FULLY SUPPORTED through at
least 2 full octaves and delivered with warm as well as resonant tones. "

Not everybody can learn that but it ain't that hard bro...obviously it can be done by a great many nevertheless.

And LMAO if you think you can convince anybody here that your observations are not informed by subjectivity.
Because excellent as Renee is...your top comment is certainly clearly informed by subjective opinion.

The links I provided mentioned exactly what I said :) that certain physical traits are associated with hyper masculinity and aggression, and enhanced immune system :) So...what's your point? Really dear, I've seen Dali paintings less surreal than your "cute" attempts at stringing together a logical argument. With you everything is a matter of opinion, and when confronted with actual science or empirical facts, you try to twist it.

The truth is, if you are a lesbian, you will not find masculine traits in a man attractive. It's simple to understand.

I change my picture every once in a while, it has nothing to do with you :)
It will be a cold day in hell when I truly care what someone not attractive enough to post their picture thinks about me. Especially if their name sounds like someone that could be working minimum wage at McDonald's.

To humiliate me you would have to be better than me. You aren't. It's not in your DNA. The fact you chose to go by a name that sounds like someone on welfare, well...I imagine if that were your actual name, your resume would end up immediately in a garbage can, and you would be flipping burgers for minimum wage.

Is senility catching up with you already? You talked about certain parameters I mentioned as if I had invented them. I pointed out Renee herself talked about them being necessary for a quality operatic voice.

  133. Okay, that really grating to listen to, at first. But it grew on me a little on a 2nd try (like a fungus).

Her voice is really annoying to listen to. I guess some people just have technique to go after since they are not naturally gifted, and thus, 'sub-singers'.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Of course it is, but none of those styles utilize operatic placement, that's what makes Renee's rendition so strikingly different.
