[Review] Mariah Carey Gets Slushy (And A Little Repetitive) With "You're Mine (Eternal)"

They're here! Mariah Carey has released the album version and remix- featuring Trey Songz- of You're Mine (Eternal). This is the third song to be lifted from the Diva's May-due album The Art Of Letting Go, and no doubt she's hoping it'll echo, and build upon, the success of her last big hit, Beautiful.

After listening to her performance of the song at the BET Honors [here] I was craving the studio version of the Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins produced You're Mine (Eternal) like a fiend. However, since hearing it in its mastered glory, the similarities it shares with Mimi's biggest hit We Belong Together have become more apparent, leaving me a little bummed. I'm definitely feeling the laid back and "direct" (read: less "whispery") vocal, but lyrically and production-wise, I feel like we've covered this ground with Mariah many, many times before.

The Diva was definitely onto something with the fresher sound she cultivated with Miguel on Beautiful- the positive public reaction attested to that. So it's a shame she decided to look to past hits for inspiration with this track, especially when has so recently been shown Mariah can still be relevant if she chooses to move forward with her music.

Still, I like You're Mine- just not as much as I thought I was going to.

Rating: B

  1. It's very catchy and I like tbh although I agree it's similar to some of her other works. The production got a bit too slushy at some points, but, overall, it's works. I don't hear the We Belong Together similarities though. 7/10 for me.

  2. Actually really loved the song. Really warmed up to it (surpise!). While so, it still really followed the formulas of her previous success. Like I said on the previous thread, I just hope she would release something bolder. #Beautiful was pretty good and I'm still quite excited for the album despite her current vocal conditions.

I heard the album is not called "The Art of Letting Go" anymore? I have no proof and just read it off a comment from another site. Also, currently there ain't gots much info on the album except the release date on the promotional video. May 6th woots mark your calendars!

P.S. Sorry if I sound too excited. Being up 48 hours straight ain't as fun as it seems/sounds.

  4. I don't really like it that much. It's not bad by any means albeit kinda generic. Perhaps it'll grow on me.

  5. I am actually really excited for the album now. Im hoping it will be a good mix between old and new Mimi. Love the song actually. I can see its faults but at the same time I can't get over how much I like it!

  6. Mariah said on her radio interview earlier today that the album title wasn't TAOLG.

  7. Not too bad. Its a grower. I do agree that it has a very generic beat, yes it sounds like something that would be played on every urban radio station, sounds like Drake and Trey Songz or whoever. However I do kinda like the hook and I think the vocals sound better than " The Art Of Letting Go". Maybe because this song has a better flow versus the rambling of "TAOLG".
One things I just cant get with is the superior league iconic artist to be working with Trey Songs? Maybe I'm out of touch and Im 24, younger than Trey Songz. Mariah has sung with greats such as Luther Vandross, Boys II Men, and Brian McKnight. I even get the Miguel duet but Trey "Billy Goat' Songz? Miguel is a pretty talent artist and has a solid voice. I know its not her first time working with Trey and she was rumored to have dated him before she and Nick Cannon married.
And I don't think Mariah is expecting this to do top the pop charts. I think Mariah has been around enough to know how far this these kind of track will be received and is satisfied with the Urban Charts. But you gotta give to her to her for that belt that transitioned into a flawless whistle. Unfortunlty I dout she will actually replicate that live.

  10. The song, surprisingly is growing on me. Although the quality may not be the best, it's still a nice song and I don't think our Diva was even attempting for it to be a #1 single. It's still better than the garbage that 2013's amateur artists put out.

  11. when i saw the video, i thought "what is mariah carey doing singing with trey songz!?" but i must admit i loved the remix of "inseparable" they did together.

i also listened to those whistles and thought the same. i love mariah & i'm going to download this joint and let it grow on me.

  12. I always loved the older stuff she did like, Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, Vanishing, Emotions, If It's Over, Hero, Anytime You Need A Friend, and Melt Away. I like this song but I still miss the "old Mariah". She just seemed saw raw and had this innocence about her back then...
