[Free For All Friday]

Happy Easter, everyone! Sorry about not commenting on the contest post yet. Just started a new job and am currently getting used to the switched up hours I'm working. Should be acclimatised in a week or so!

If you don't know the score, here be the rules:

  • Try not to get too perverted- this site  needs to basically be "safe for work".
  • If somebody starts a controversial subject, try keeping it civil when dealing with it. If things get out of hand please flag the conversation.
  • It would be nice if it stuck to music, but it's not a requirement! So talk about news, current events, how you're getting your hair done next time you hit the hairdresser! Whateves, really!
  • No nasty comments aimed at other users.
Inappropriate hugs to all of y'all (hi fives to the underagers), and wishing you an awesome weekend!

  3. Ms. Arie is a wonderful songwriter. Whenever I listen to her music, it is purely for the music. It is a shame that both her and Alicia debuted within the same time frame, yet it was the latter's career that blossomed. I do like Alicia (although her music has become, slightly, insufferable these past three albums - her first two were the best - as has her voice) and she is talented however she is also, to an extent, highly overrated. Nonetheless, I have my own opinions as to why she succeeded so greatly...

  4. I don't think the song is about glycerine? I think it's supposed to be a metaphor isn't it?

  10. I know right! I am in awe of her. I could stack her up against any of the 'greatest' from Pop music and she'd still come out good. There's something about an aged, matured voice that is always a pleasure to the senses.

All her covers on the show so far have been nothing short of amazing.

  13. I don't know if anyone's heard this, but my Chemistry teacher showed this to me a few weeks ago, and I've been obsessed with it. Bastille (who's song Pompeii has been getting quite a bit of attention) did a song called No Angels, and while it's not a Beyonce cover, it's a cover of the iconic No Scrubs by TLC, to the instrumental of Angels by The xx, and interlopes sound bites from Psycho. It definitely shows off the lead singer's vocals a lot better than their current hit, and it also features a singer who goes by the name of Ella, and her voice compliments the track incredibly well. It's a masterpiece to me.

I love him so much! My favorite male vocalist along with Jackie Wilson
IMO he is better than Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra
Such sophistication, I adore him. That's why "Ziegfield Girl" is one of the greatest movie musicals, it contains performances by Tony Martin and Judy Garland!

  15. Agreed!

i wanted to post the live audition video but couldn't find it, so the studio recording instead. Live surpasses the studio version, easily.

I'd say even real tenor is disappearing. Men are singing more and more in alto and completely neglecting to develop a middle voice.

Ingeborg Hallstein, a true vocal miracle and the greatest light coloratura soprano of the 20th century - Though virtually unknown. Here singing this aria that everybody and their cat sings (badly). She is the only person that makes those high F's sound absolutely natural, not harder than drinking a glass of water. That's true vocal ability.

  22. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=E3ZPSNZ8zdc ayyyy Fetus Ariana!!! Naw she was only about 14 or so when she recorded this, I'm pretty impressed! She actually had a nice, audible chest voice, not her slurred, barely there whisper register smh. And them upper belts are on point!!! Whatever happened to her? Surely, as you age your voice develops more, but she sounds way better at this age. All these Mariah comparisons have actually gone to her head, now she thinks she has to be Mariah TT Don't get me wrong, I love Ariana, stalk her on twitter for all I care ^.^ She has potential but she never uses it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I was terribly curious to see what would happen if Mariah's song 'Lead the Way' were done as a duet...so...I MAY or may not have recorded myself together with her...

    DON'T JUDGE ME. TOO HARSHLY.

  24. I think she's still trying to find her sound. You can tell on certain songs on her album that she's obviously trying to distance herself a little from the Mariah comparisons. I'm excited to hear her new single Problem in a week, and if her guest feature Iggy Azalea brings anything to the table, it'll have a cool innovative sound. Maybe like a hip-hop Better Left Unsaid. Who knows? Time will tell.

  26. I adore him just as much as you do. 'Tony Martin, Jackie Wilson, Sammy Davis Jr, Wintley Phipps, & Billy Eckstine' will forever be my five, favorite Male vocalists and my all-time prime- vocal inspirations.

My vocal style is based within the 'Traditional Pop & Jazz' stylings of the 1940's - 1960's; these singers possessed astounding techniques of which didn't compromise their ability to connect with an audience neither. They were truly wondrous.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Primo Uomo Assoluto19 April 2014 at 10:17

Indeed! it's sad the only male singer doing something like that nowadays is Michael Buble who is not bad but not truly great either.

I've thought about recording some jazz-pop standards and I'll probably get around it when I have more time :P one song I want to cover is "Blue Moon" but with a cheerful arrangement as done by Caterina Valente (as well as those vocal acrobatics going along the brass section)

  33. I say age has done her lower register some wonders because before she turned 29, it was hallow and ugly. Now its warm and rich. And the midbelts on Heaven also have developed a slight level of richness. I think Beyonce used to compensate singing with great technique and a brassy tone for not having a rich timbre, because back in the day, her timbre used to be very girly, extremely bright and the lower to middle section was hallow.

  42. Okay so I have a question about timbres and stuff. I noticed how almost all Disney Princesses and Countertenors (Mitch Grassi mostly) and Classic Sopranos have the same kind of heady resonance (?) to their mid voices. I would describe it as youthful, brilliant and light. Difficult to describe. My question is how does that work, is it natural/tone or can every vocal type apply that placement. I really want to figure that voice out and apply it myself...

    Here a few examples

    http://youtu.be/tA53EsnzlIg?t=1m9s

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk33dTVHreQ

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rivTGBzBMM

    ReplyDelete
  43. Disney is sure a fan of soprano, i think because they are more softer and easier to listen to that can appeal to little kids and also almost every little girl is soprano so yeah. Just imagine if a Contralto like Annie Lennox or a Mezzo like Jennifer Holliday will be the singing voice of a young protagonist in Disney. Hilarious.

Anyway im not really that familiar with music and stuff but as a disney fan though a bit lesser nowadays, i used to mimick their singing. i just mixed my chest with head voice, being the latter dominant.

  44. That Beyonce video :O It was hilarious!

  45. As Ariana, Tamar, Demi, and other mainstream artists grow into their "hood," what would the long-term effects of over vocal chord usage be? A prime example would be Mariah, grueling tours every other year, a new album out every year, interviews, and other sorts.
I mean Demi's voice is amazing yet it's cracking under the pressure of two tours and Tamar, her voice is starting to heal and Ariana... it almost seems to me like she's going to follow Mariah's footsteps.
What would the long-term effects be if they over-used their chords and didn't take a long, nice, rest for their chords to rejuvenate?

PS: I know Mariah's vocal nodules were mainly the cause but it's still pretty insane for such a musically trained person such as Mariah herself to over-use her golden pipes. :D

    ReplyDelete
  46. Try country music. It has really good baritones and tenors who actually have quite developed voices.

    ReplyDelete
  47. True! If only she were a little bit younger! Today, most people buy music only from teen singers (Thank Britney, Christina, and Jessica for that). You can't also neglect the way fans work these days; Support their music for a year or two, start to unconcern themselves with the artist, the artists flop and become unknown. This is mostly true for the debut artists who can't always bring their A-game and can't keep a steady stream of fans much less an established fan base. The lucky ones; Ariana, Tamar, and others have to be thankful! Enough of my ranting (lol) let's just see how HER game plays out! LET THE ANNUAL HUNGER GAMES BEGIN!

Well Demi has been taking tours like it's her job. You can sorta already see Demi's voice taking tolll (lack of control, bad technique, out of breath, shouty belts, gruesome vibrato). This live DEMI era for her has been pretty bad vocally. She needs to take a break, recuperate, and then come back. Ariana seems to be taking the MC right, yes. Already working on a new album and a single is coming out in like 8 days.

I am guessing she might want long term, seeing as she choose Blake as a coach. A guy who is in a genre where people usually have such careers.

  81. Mariah didn't tour that much at all.. Her first tour was 6 shows, which was the Music Box tour, then after that, the Daydream tour, which was only 7 shows. So she performed a total of 13 concerts before her voice went. This doesn't include television performances, of course, but Mariah fans have always tried to push the idea that Mariah toured so much and overworked her voice because of it, when that was never the case. Mariah has performed 10x as many concerts outside of her prime, versus within her prime, keep that in mind.

When he is singing in the lower register (actually male middle) he makes it sound like he is singing an octave lower. Very strange.
The best part is his extreme upper register, the rest of the voice is not really solid
    Nice performance though.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Primo Uomo Assoluto20 April 2014 at 01:34

Ridiculous, I mean, it doesn't even resemble the song. What makes her think she is so good she can rewrite a classic, completely changing the melody? Awful, just awful.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Primo Uomo Assoluto20 April 2014 at 01:37

I seriously doubt singing with a microphone could cause over-use of the voice. Opera singers sing for up to 5 hours without microphones, projecting over a 40 piece orchestra and by the next day the vocal cords are baby fresh. Broadway singers perform 8 shows a week, while also dancing and acting.
Mariah's vocal decline was due to her using an incorrect technique (constant whispering) which debilitated her vocal muscles, keeping them from making full contact, so now the voice sounds dry and tired.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Primo Uomo Assoluto20 April 2014 at 01:40

A great deal of singing comes from imagination
Many mezzo sopranos and contraltos learn to let go off the weight of chest voice as they go up the scale by thinking of doing a very light pure head voice like a child. It's just a matter of imagining it.

    ReplyDelete

  98. When I heard she covered this I was really excited because it was a great song that she would've sounded great on. But I'm a little disappointed, I feel like this could've been a great song to show off a lower register with. I'm not familiar with it, but it sounded nice in Neon Lights, and I think it would sound great in her tone. I also felt like the belts in the last chorus were slightly messy, and felt improvised and not in a good way. I definitely think Demi's a great emotive singer, but I feel like this could've used a little more polishing and planning out.
If you want a great cover from her tho, check out her version of Stay by Rihanna. Although I'm sure most of us here have already heard it.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I feel like it's a little messy and could use some polishing in some places. But her voice is great with a beautiful tone, and some very great runs. I think it's a cool idea she did with the melody, and it was a great way to show off her voice. I feel bad for people who are so pretentious they don't think anyone deserves a little artistic credit for trying to show some creativity, and hide in their little caves afraid of change.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I'll skip the technique part because I think we all got that covered. But there's another very very important thing that a lot of artists forget: Taking care of their body and health.
We all know Mariah drank a lot, and still does. Even while she was breastfeeding her child.
Demi obviously went to rehab for a lot of substance abuse, and recently came out about her usage of cocaine. As well as having bulimia, which is incredibly bad for the voice, much less the whole body, as the stomach acids can deteriorate the throat so quickly.
You could say "oh _____ drinks all the time and their voice is fine", but you could easily notice a deterioration or the "raspy" quality those singers get, and not a lot of singers sing to the heights of Demi and Mariah, so it might be hard to tell exactly how these substances are affecting them.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I feel like we already talked about this set on a post, or at least a FFA Friday, her voice sounds really strong, her stage presence and personality is consistently shining through, and the way she ever so slightly injects her country drawl into covers and her own songs.

Does anyone here have any explanation about how Mariah belts? I think I have some sort of..... "fetish" for her girly, upper belting. I know it has something to do with mixing? Not quite sure, I'm more of a Diva Instagram Stalker, than a Devotee, but hey! I mean when Mariah gets those highs Es *claps* it's like sex to my ears I swear.

I would have been more impressed if she had done this overdone song very well as opposed to taking the lyrics and putting them over forgettable, generic R&B that sounds like a Jojo B-side

I thought till I thought a hole in the ground if it would be prudent to share this with ye all, but since I have been accused of promoting my videos (even though they were about other vocalists I love and not about me), I thought I might as well do it for real. Here's a demo for a new original song of mine, it's very joyful and cute :) I do hope whichever dislike you may have for some aspects of my personality do not keep you from enjoying a sweet melody and some fun vocal acrobatics :P

    ReplyDelete
  122. Dude, at least you are being straightforward about it now. I take no issue with that kind of self promoting. it's honest and to the point. If you or anyone else want to post videos of yourself singing and say "hey, check me out"...I applaud the guts and will check it out. As I did in this case and I stand by my earlier assessment. I think your tone is nice and obviously your technique is excellent but your singing generally leaves me uninterested. It also sounds to me like a generous use of technology (which I don't think you actually need but does make it all sound "better" than it would without).

My remark was in response to something you claimed at the time and it stated you were linking to your channel and with a particular /dual purpose. I had my reason for pointing it out at the time. You turning my statement regarding channel promotion and your goal with that, into a claim I falsely stated you posted your own singing videos actually underlines my point. You seem to indeed remember your intent rather than my statement. ;-)

And if you claim you do not want me to respond to your comments, I would advice you to leave off the hints to your misunderstandings of my words. :-)

  125. I have no idea Lovatic. But width is really A: not the defining measure of a good singer and B: apparently not a requirement to having a vocal profile on this blog (considering some of the singers who already have a profile).

I tried to find something regarding that vocal range of Dolly through Google and could find nothing. I'd say even the more reason for a profile here. (you'd be the First DD!!! ;-) )

I DID find a perfect bit about Dolly's original version of I Will Always Love You v. Whitney's had me thumping my desk and exclaiming "yes, yes YESSS!!!" anyway LOL
"You can get a sense of the fineness of Parton’s vocal texture by listening to her own recording of “I Will Always Love You,”
playing it against Whitney Houston’s megahuge, bloated version of the
    song. (No need to actually put the Houston version on the turntable;
simply playing it in your head is torture enough.) A guitar motif washed
with mournful sunset colors opens Parton’s version; when she steps in,
she handles the lyrics with the cautious tenderness of a farm girl
carrying a jumble of newly hatched chicks in her apron. She’s aware of
the fragility of what she’s holding, and of its fleetingness: Unlike a
passel of chicks, it’s destined to soon fly away from her forever.
Houston’s version, on the other hand, is an overbearing monstrosity,
nothing but a vehicle for her windup-toy melisma." (Stephanie Zacharek Salon Arts & Entertainment)

  139. Tbh I felt much the same first time I saw her do that to a classic. It seems to be a habit of her and I also feel she doesn't have the pedigree to change melodies(or words) of songs. So yeah, I agree with his point there.
In fact, I personally feel it is wrong thing to do even if you do have the pedigree. I find it highly disrespectful to the composer. If you don't want to sing the song, pick a song you do want to sing.

And also it might be a forgivable offense if it brought about an improvement to the song, but imo it doesn't. Which would indicate that she indeed "isn't good enough" to do that kind of thing.

    ReplyDelete
  140. But Mariah started whispering after her vocal decline...

    ReplyDelete
  141. I personally don't see it as disrespectful, it happens all the time in music, people do remixes on songs, but it's no disrespect to a producer, people rewrite verses and edit words, but it's no disrespect to a writer. And no one really calls out Xtina on the ab lib overkill on song covers as disrespect to the composer. I feel like artists have the right to change the melody or not, despite of their "qualifications," whether it's good or not is up to the audience, which is fine, we all have our opinions, but I feel like we can't really say if they should or shouldn't.

  145. Well we differ of opinion in that case. Which is fine. :-)
But I do have to say..fact that "people do it all the time" is a pretty poor argument. People murder people for a pittance all the time too. Does that make it okay in your eyes?

I know artists who get in touch with the writer first before changing as much as the pronouns. Artists with a better pedigree than mcFall. I checked out her wiki entry and see no mention of her having had any serious music education or playing any instruments. Nor of her having any music writing in her credits.
I just don't think such a lack of theoretical knowledge and experience gives you the leeway to presume you can change established works of art.

And yeah, I hate remixes too. ;-)

    ReplyDelete

I quite like her voice, but there's something about her that pisses me off: She seems to have a great variety of vocal colours, which is something I like, but she seems committed to use ALL of them in EVERY song. Her cover of Loving You is a great example, if she had kept with the light, sweet colouring she started with, the performance for me would be a 10, but then she started to change it, showing up to 3000 other vocal colours and it was like "girl, please, stop"

Seeing as choices do have to be made. Only 24 hours in a day and as far as I can tell, in DD's case when it comes to making profiles...his 24 hours are spread out over years.

Generous use of technology as any pop recording; comping and editing, things that were manually nudged to align them perfectly to the beat (especially harmonies), EQ and several layers of compression. No major pitch correction or pitch shifting or time manipulation (stretching or shortening). And of course, layers of reverb and delay to create more space.

LOL, it's actually about having communion with the all that is, and the lyrics are based on the original text of the Lord's Prayer, in Arameic.
What do you have against unicorns? They are the most magical of beings, beautiful but ferocious, representing spiritual purity and a connection with nature. And their spiral horne is symbol of constant evolution, the spiral energy, the power every living being has to evolve and be better we were yesterday.

There's such a thing as "too much". It is one thing to decorate a vocal line, but if one must completely rewrite it, well, one shouldn't have sung it in the first place.
The rules of music dictate one sings the melody cleanly and as written the first time, then decorate it when it repeats.
Anyway, if it's not broken, don't try to fix it. We show more artistry by doing a classic very well than by trying to re invent it in name only and doing it not so well.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Primo Uomo Assoluto21 April 2014 at 11:14

    ReplyDelete
  169. Primo Uomo Assoluto21 April 2014 at 11:16

Always bad, because even if you sing softly it must be fully supported, on the breathe, not with air escaping like a gushing wound. Soft singing requires more breathe support than full belting to be healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  170. oh i knew what you were trying to say ;)). and of course im with you on that one but since that's not what is happening and that might not be the case anytime soon. So i thought i'll just say/ask who i want to have a profile that's all. 174. LOL I have nothing against unicorns. They sure are a better, more pleasant fantasy than that god character from the bible. :-)

I was being flippant since you clearly attached all these religious (yes, I know many like to call it "spiritual" but really..."spiritual" is simply religion minus the demanding bits) connotations to them and this song clearly had a religious meaning.
Had it not been for your fascination with unicorns (and I dare say to people who don't know this to be an interest of you) I would have supposed this to be a song about the christian myth.
And seeing as you say, the lyrics are based on the prayer from that religion...I guess I read that correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  175. ps the original prayer was written in Greek. The Aramaic you are speaking of is a translation from Greek to Aramaic and scholars claim the Aramaic to be the Syrian dialect rather than Judean Aramaic of the time Jesus supposedly would have been speaking.

    ReplyDelete
  189. I know I said I'd never answer to any of your posts again, but since you seem to be being nice right now, I'll give it a try too.

The vocals IMO were great, I specially liked the low notes from the verses ("you are the truth", "away from you"...) because I have kind of a fetish for good male lows and female head voices lol. I also quite like your tone. I've checked some of your other videos (BTW, you have a lot of videos in that channel lol) and I like how you change it from sometimes bright and youthful to sometimes manly and mature.

Now, the problem is that your voice doesn't seem to adapt too well to modern music. You clearly are a versatile singer, but when you sing modern music it's like... I don't know, it sounds too opera-ish, like you sing it with too much delicacy to make it sound more beautiful, but instead it sounds kind of awkward, for example when you sang Livin' On A Prayer. Maybe you could try to sing it a little bit "rougher". I don't mean that you use a lesser appropiate technique, just to try to not to make it sound so delicate and polished. Maybe adding more chest to your belts could help with that, because I feel they're way too heady. I know it's an artistic choice, but it just doesn't seem the right one IMO.

I remember you posted a song that was like a conversation between two inner you about getting self-independance or something like that. Your voice sounded much more adapted to modern music there, and it was kinda catchy as well, you could try to go that way. (get me the link if you can BTW)

    ReplyDelete
  194. Primo Uomo Assoluto21 April 2014 at 18:22

Thanks :) well, most of it is artistic choice, and the fact I don't really enjoy singing with roughness unless I truly feel the music benefits from it to convey the character I'm portraying. Such as in that song of mine "Brighter than the sun". I'm a spinto or young dramatic tenor, so taking a lot of chest voice too high is extremely dangerous for my voice type, thus I use more head voice as I go past G4 or A4, it's also more along the lines of "bel canto" technique.

But I'd like to believe I can transition from style to style if I so chose to, for example this little bit where I sing same thing first in a poppy tenor voice, then in a rougher rock style and then in an operatic placement:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjbxsiSDNx4

And then there's this recording in which I sing completely pop, without even using vibrato:

Well, for me it is not truly about religion. I'm very much against religion, if anything I'm a Gnostic and I have more in common with the Cathars than with modern Christians. And since I see God more as an all loving mother, I think I probably have more in common with wicca or hindu shaktism.
The words of the original Lord's prayer simply resonated with me, as they speak of communion with the one based on trust, truth and love.
