Jessica Jung
Vocal Type: Light lyric soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves D3-D6
Whistle Register: No
Vocal Pluses: Soft, delicate and innocent colouring to the whole of Jessica Jung's range. Her technique is such that she can hold notes for lengths of time with no deviation in pitch, but can also add a pleasing vibtrato if needed.
The lower notes are dark and heavy, with a smoky timbre to them, noticeably so when compared to the rest of the range. But that weight is quickly lost, though not the rounded quality of the notes, as it climbs into the midrange. This part of the range is perhaps the sweetest and warmest part of the voice.
The belting range has a sharper tone than the lower half, and has a clear and bright colouring. This part of the range finds its most resonance at about the C5 mark, after that the voice begins to decrease in power and weight. However, notes above this are still achieved with ease and her mix is such that the voice doesn't lose it's character.
Depending on the technique to access her head voice Jessica can create a tone that is airy and light- some would call this her falsetto- or she can fill it out the tone and add more weight, making it sound more resonant and "operatic".
Vocal Negatives: Overall the tone of the voice is weak, meaning that though notes are hit relatively comfortably and with good technique the projection of these notes is poor and lacking resonance.

And finally, Jessica of SNSD has a vocal range! I love her vocal range that flying like a lovely dove! :D Thumbs up for her!
ReplyDeleteLight Lyric Soprano? Um...Jessica is not classically trained, so you can't really classify her as a light lyric soprano. I don't think we should give any pop singers who have not been classically trained these kind of titles. I'll accept soprano, but honestly, she's more of a mezzo-soprano. Her vocal weight is not light enough to be considered a soprano. Also, her tessitura is F3-D5 (chest/mixed notes) although she can still sound good above D5. Her head notes are not as bright and strong though.
ReplyDeleteHer low notes are definitely not heavy and dark. It is breathy and sweet lol. The whistle register part is questionable...I think she can access that range with falsetto/head voice, but I don't think she can really whistle.
And her voice definitely does not lose its power after C5 lol.
ReplyDeleteOh, hay thar, my video, I see it.....I do not agree with two things, I agree her tone is smoky in her lower range, but definitely not heavy nor dark, the least Jessica has in her voice is darkness or weight, definitely quite a warm midrange and quite a bright strong higher range, but I don't agree with Soprano, she is more of a mezzo and she is not an opera singer, and I agree, her voice does lose power and weight as she goes higher, but I'd say she still has quite a powerful and heavy E5......even though her C5 is more consistent and easy, E5 is still good, but yeah, this is quite good, thanks for using my video!~ ^ ^
ReplyDeletehey Ahmin, I said her range was dark in the lower extremes compared to the rest of her range, not compared to other singers. But as for her vocal classification, you may be right ,as I was just judging from the video only- I am no expert on Snsd or their music! But thanks for creating such a great video, I may use some more, if I do profiles on the other members if that is okay.
ReplyDeleteThe whistle register was supposed to say no, I've just corrected. But I do think the voice loses resonance after a C5.
ReplyDeleteOh I see! That I can agree with. And oh my, don't even worry. I disagree with classifying non-classically trained singers, but I was very honored, I did come here before to see some vocal profiles, so knowing my video and a SNSD member got in here, I'm really happy. I'd be very happy if you did use more of my videos and more vocal profiles from SNSD members. Oh, I noticed you don't have a classification for Tamia, she is like one of Jessica's role-models lol I thought about it when I looked at your letter T.
ReplyDeleteJessica Jung has a lighter weight according to her voice. So she's may be a light-lyric soprano or what-so-ever. I love her vocal techniques when it comes to belt the high notes. I agree with her.
ReplyDeletewow! thanks a lot! ^^
ReplyDeletecan you make vocal profile for TaeYeon from SNSD too?
ReplyDeleteDiva Devotee, can you create Super Junior vocal profiles aside from SNSD?
ReplyDeleteThat D3 in the video is actually F3
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, no it's a D3, I've heard and sung this line 3 times in a row to check, and I always end it on D3, repeating back and singing with her, and taking I'm singing with a male voice, a D3 is well within my range, so I'm singing the notes more clearly than her, but still the same ones
ReplyDeleteYesung on the other hand is a baritone, Ryeowook is a tenour and how about Kyuhyun's voice? Is Kyuhyun either bass or a dramatic tenour? Thanks for asking! Add them to the male section of Diva.
ReplyDeleteI hope there are Super Junior members who have vocal profiles. :D
ReplyDeleteDiva, can you please make the male vocal range of SHINee singers Jonghyun Kim and Jinki "Onew" Lee? And then add 'em to the male section of Diva Devotee. Okay? :D
ReplyDeleteOnew's vocal range: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNfMBNQNfZU

ReplyDeleteThis is an old post, but I'd it be great to see a vocal profiile on any members of JYJ... if you haven't listened, "In Heaven" is a really great song that really shows their vocal talent
ReplyDeleteOn the classifying non-classical singers: I don't think it's really a problem when the voice is well-trained enough in another genre to identify "possibilities" of being a certain "classical" archetype. It's all conjecture anyway, for any of these voices. And Jessica is a soprano in my opinion, and if not, she DEFINITELY has a lyric voice--both of which are easy enough to identify. It's the "dramatic" and "coloratura" and "spinto" "falcon" blah blah blah that's hard to say without classical training since microphones can magnify lyric voices--but if it sounds lyric on record, it's most likely lyric in life.
ReplyDeleteThat's all my opinion, though. I'm far from an authority. xD
I wanna see a vocal profile for 2ne1....Especially Minzy. Although as a group singer, she generally gets charged with the low notes and sings from like F3-Eb5 which is like 1 octave 5 notes and a seminote....I beleive Minzy to be darker Mezzo with phenomenal weight control. At first I thought she was a contralto but her belting isn't really "overly" bright in tone and typical of a mezzo's coloring... CL is a very nasally singer and is one of those people who talks way deeper than she sings. lol But she can really sing. Her and Minzy sing similar roles but CL gets more high notes. CL and Minzy as of lately have very confusingly similar voices. Both of them have smoky voices but Minzy has more weight while CL's rasp is slightly less coarse. Bom is the designated belter of the group and so far has the biggest range. She can sing from Eb3-G5 but her phrasing is what kills me.....gosh... She really has poor phrasing but I can't judge her. Dara used to be the weakest member of the group but as of lately, she has been pulling her weight with solid vocals.
