Review: Katy Perry Performs "Part Of Me" Live At 2012 Echo Awards

 katy perry 2012 echo

At the 2012 Echo Awards Katy Perry gave yet another pitchy performance of new single Part Of Me. One could argue Perry makes up for the vocal deficiency with her peppy and energetic stage presence, but I don't understand how someone who has just finished an extensive tour- where she sang live- could still sound like such an amateur.

Taken from the re-release of 2010's Teenage Dream, which now carries the suffix "The Complete Confection", people could argue the star is just having teething trouble with the new material. But Perry has already sung it live a few times- Sports Relief and the Grammys- and it doesn't seem to be getting any better, so surely it can't be that.

Still, I admit that I can't help but like Katy Perry and the catchy pop music she makes. It's a realisation I've come to quite unexpectedly and Part of me is no different. The melody of the song is particularly catchy, and lyrics like "You chew me up and spit me out, like I was poison in your mouth" and " You rip me off, your love was cheap, was always tearing at the seams" are simple but effective at communicating the emotions of this messy break-up.

The middle eight is awfully written though, and the vocals are not quite raw enough to really lift it into "anthem" territory-  P!nk or Kelly Clarkson would have smashed it. However, Part Of Me is still a great pop song that should continue Katy Perry's high charting singles run.

Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection is released on 26th of March

  1. Hmmm

I like her songs but I don't really like her lack of ability. If you have ever heard her sing the material before she changed from Katy Hudson to Katy Perry you would defo notice a massive diff in her voice. In her her chrisitan/gospel days she sounded wayy far superior vocally and much more natural, I can only really conclude that for the sake of her current career it was a deliberate branch away to sound totally different.

As for the above performances I am not surprised, I don't know if its nerves, vocal exertion from the tour ect but she is defo more capable that you would think. I think she needs to take her music back to basics ie an acoustic set where she has no choice but to force her voice to do the work.

See 'Search Me' from 'Katy Hudson' here:

I think here she sounds far more pleasant...

  2. I knew her family were devote Christians, but I never knew Katy released Christian music! Her voice really does sound better here. Perhaps its an age thing, or maybe singing out of natural range for so many years once she hit the pop world hasn't done her any favours.  I think I'll go check out some more stuff from that era. Thanks for that, Stuey!

  3. No Probs, I have heard a few of the songs and they are not all in your face Christian music either, some pretty good songs.

I think you may be right about singing out of her range, maybe now she is suffering from vocal chord memory loss or summat lol

Don't get my wrong in the studio she sounds great but I have yet to see a live session where she totally blows me away. I thought her acoustic set on the X factor of 'The One That Got Away' was not too shabby though...

  4. Sorry but I have to say that I really dislike Katy Perry. I can't find a single good thing about her. She doesn't dance, her stage presence is averange, her songs have always the same beat, the lyrics sometimes are poor... and vocally is a disaster, specially when she tries to sing in a soprano range when she's clearly not, so the result is terrible! I can't believe that this girl has so many Nº1s... she's soooo untalented!

  5. Its weird because I feel like I shouldn't like her, but I can't help it.

  6. Sometimes I would prefer if she could stop with these weird movements, like the last ones she did (3:52)

  7. i agree with diva the middle eight is weak
also the way she sings the chorus is kinda wierd and i feel it doesnt fit in with the angsty feeling of the song lyrics
the problem with ms perry is that she does have some good songs - my favorite being thinking of you from her debut album- but shes not a great performer or singer - i mean i think the reason why shes popular is because her music is so mainstream, shes pretty, and teens and the general public find her easy to digest nothing complicated or deep about her music or persona

she just needs to find songs that she can sing well live
also she needs to stop trying to dance shes horrible at it - shes no beyonce

  8. I like this performance better than the Grammy Performance but KATY why are you doing this to yourself? You have the talent you just need to fine tune it. What I like about this performance? The peppy stage atmosphere and her presence was good. I like how she sung it correctly instead of "Thishish the ppart of me thatchew never gone ever take away from me". She is singing from the nose in this and its definitely taking away from the vocal part of the performance. She needs to find a good vocal coach. Katy has a very nice voice. But her technique makes her very Pitchy as you said and the Nasal quality of her voice is taking away from what could have been a great performance.

  11. Lol I never realised she loved herself SOOO much hehe

  12. Well, she looks good, like a sexy, space-age My Little Pony.

    The lighting is great.

The moment at 02:00 in made me laugh, did she expect the audience to sing that line? They don't know the song well enough yet!
Thank god for those backing singers filling out the sound. And I've heard her sound a lot worse, to be fair... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9xv4txIPt8 Her sound engineers must work hard. ;o) Although it's a lot easier in the studio, when you aren't dancing around.

  13. And let's not forget, she's still miles better than:

  14. I agree Stuey, that was the best she's ever sang live...probably because she was holding a guitar and that's where she feels most comfortable.

  15. I really cant get why she has blue hair..... its like she tries to look like Gaga or what.....why she doesnt try to be original instead of copying somebody ????

    ReplyDelete
  16. So Gaga invented blue hair?

    ReplyDelete
  17. No but everything Gaga wears we can see later at Katy is this just a circumstance ?

    ReplyDelete
  18. But Katy had Blue Hair before in California Gurls.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Seriously, these stans think Gaga invented breathing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lmao 'sexy, space age My Little Pony' that made my day that did (and disturbed me too lol). I remember that performance, I also remember cringing for her...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Damn you are right..... im not saying Gaga invented everything but look if Gaga wouldnt be famous and nobody would know her Katy would wear jeans and shirts.... got it ?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well I wouldn't say that. Because The whole weird thing has been done not just by Gaga but also by artists before. Like Madonna, Cher, Christina, heck even beyonce was weird (in a more ghetto fashion sense) before gaga came out. I think that just because gaga came out a bit earlier than Katy she is being seen as a copy cat which they both actually are.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 2:10 MEGA FAIL with the playback xD

    ReplyDelete
  24. Exactly. Plenty of artists have dressed/dress in unusual fashions. Take Bjork for instance, she wore plenty of weird stuff before Gaga was even out. To all the Gaga Stans: you know her Meat Dress? The one that your precious Mother Monster wore at the VMAs that had some completely bullshit social commentary? Done before. I don't understand why everyone thinks she so unique and that if someone does something "different" they're trying to be like her or copy her.

  25. Let me just lay it down folks... she needs to quit being a pop star and go back to being a singer-songwriter because that's where you get to see how talented she is. Listen to this acoustic version of Thinking of You:

  26. They are both copycats yes and Katy was here long before Gaga and her fashion looked very ordinary suddenly Gaga apears with crazy outfits and everybody was like omg but after time when Katy and Rihanna etc. realized they are boring , they and many more artists started to wears provocative freaky clothes just like Gaga ( i dont mean they are copying her ( they sometimes do but Gaga too) but she was like a starter of all these crazy stuffs. Rihannas music before "Age Of Gaga"( i call these times like that) was surely better than now... her music now is like s**t and her clothes were jeans and shirts just like Katy but after Gaga they suddenly looks like her bad made clones... i mean why are they doing this why they changed ? before Gaga they were theyselfs and now they are fakes... i can talk hours about this how much Gaga influenced them.

  27. @ Gembler19Katy Dressed normal? Since when? The whole theme of her album may have been more normal than it is now but she still dressed quite odd and provocative. Theres also a HUGE difference in the extremes of how Katy and gaga dress. Gaga goes ALL OUT with her costumes etc. Katy on the other hand is a bit more regal and cutesy. Really the only thing truly abnormal about Katy in the Teenage dream era is the whole candy land theme. She really hasn't gone all out with any costume.

  28. I agree, and nice vid dude! :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. i agree shes a decent singer/songwriter but the pop music she writes is just bad

thinking of me will always be my favorite song from her

    ReplyDelete
  30. no but after katy witnessed people were into the whole freaky eccentric style she went off to the vmas and wore a cube on her head

and later at the echo awards she wear paco rabanne who gaga frequently wears

yes u can say gaga copies madonna or cher - but she is in a different time and she reinterprets their art

before 2008 there werent very many wierd or eccentric singers in mainstream but gaga brought it back to the forefront and now katy, rihanna, and nicki minaj started wearing weird outfits

now im not saying theyre copying her but i feel like gaga can never win and its not fair because i honestly think shes one of the most sincerely creative people left in the industry

    ReplyDelete
  31. yeah i think gembler missed the mark there but rihanna, nick, and katy were much less flamboyant before gaga came out
not saying they copied her just saying that its not fair for people to say gaga is copying anyone either

and in response to hannah - yes there are some delusional gaga stans but haha all celebrities and singers have delusional fans
    - and everyone else looks at gaga and says that she is a copycat
and whats funny is that gaga has NEVER EVER called herself ORIGINAL its all the fans and haters that call or bash her for her originality

and u say everyone thinks shes unique... um if u look on the internet on every gaga article or video there are spammers and haters that constantly say gaga sucks and shes a wannabe of madonna

i think we should just agree no one is copying anyone because nothing is original cuz theres no such thing
