[Listen] Sia Returns To Music With “Chandelier"

Sia is one artist that keeps on delivering- even when writing for others! Her latest single, Chandelier, is no exception, being one monster of a track.

Taken from her sixth album- due this year- this lead single doesn't bend to any current trend, sounding distinctly Sia in both its production and vocal.Something I love about the Diva is how unique her voice sounds when stacked into harmonies, and Chandelier carries on this tradition, supporting the main vocal- which contains some rare head notes- beautifully.

I tell you something, I'll be swinging from the chandeliers when this album eventually hits. You just try and stop me!

Thoughts?

  1. The chord progressions within the verses of the song, especially, do sound highly similar to that of Rihanna's "Diamonds" albeit placed at a slower tempo. In fact, if I didn't know any matter, I would say that within certain parts of the song, it was Rihanna singing.

All in all, I hate to say it but ( and as much as I adore Sia) I don't like this song at all. I've often appreciated the combination of her unique melody lines & technical ability fused with commercial production however her previous singles seemed to withhold much more musical character whereas this song is borderline- generic, in my opinion; it's doing absolutely nothing for me right now and I doubt that will change anytime soon.

  2. I agree with Devonte. It's borderline generic and not doing much for me either. Very well done generic pop though. And I do like her voice.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Sadly it is generic..........

    ReplyDelete
  4. Maybe the problem is, she ended up "sounding like" all the people who covered her songs and were actually originally trying to sound like her on the demo or something?
    Just suggesting a possibility.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Ahhh yes, that's actually a very good angle to consider. my advice to her: make someone else record her demos since the artists who are buying her songs don't have an identity at all -_- http://www.popjustice.com/briefing/sia-furler-pop-entity-of-2013/122971/

  6. Please people, somebody, anybody, make a profile for Sia! She needs one more than anybody else. I'd do it myself, if I knew all the technical things, but I don't. That's what I first came on here for, were vocal profiles.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Or ya know, sent them sheet music instead of demo tapes. ;-)

  8. Love, love, LOVE Sia! That instrument of her's fused with her songs is completely amazing!

  10. Was going to say this. I remember hearing Diamonds for the first time and thinking "WTF ?! Sounds like Sia, didn't know she had a song out ! OMG. Rihanna... Sorry, Sia". Rihanna has been imitating her a lot, and since she's been very popular zith Diamonds, now Sia has to go through all this "sounds like Rihanna" crap.

    ReplyDelete
  11. That would be fun to see LOL

    ReplyDelete
  12. Really liked it. I'm right there on the chandelier with ya, DD :P

I can't wait for the album to come out, altho I'm fairly sure it won't live up to WAB, which is one of my all-time favorite pop albums.

This woman needs to work on her enunciation. Really though, what was she saying the first 20 seconds. Her music sounds the the poor man's Rihanna...but with better technique...just my two cents

Then I stick to my opinion. She needs to work a bit on enunciation. Could be the accent as well.

It will be a return to SPROCK but with a modern update :)

Sia is not good enough to deserve a detailed assessment of her vocals. I've seen enough performances by her to know she struggles with upper-middle belts.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Primo Uomo Assoluto18 March 2014 at 03:17

It's sad when artists like Celine Dion imitate the sound of Sia, which at times sounds like a Rihanna song.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Primo Uomo Assoluto18 March 2014 at 03:18

Quite the opposite, I think Sia imitates Rihanna. I remember listening to Christina's album "Lotus", which has a bunch of Sia songs, and thinking "this sounds like Rihanna rejected songs".

    ReplyDelete
  22. LOL "not good enough"? Taylor Swift has a profile on here.
I don't think having perfect technique is the measuring stick for a profile here. If it was we'd only have the five or so profiles of your little list of perfection. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Primo Uomo Assoluto18 March 2014 at 05:07

I don't think perfection is needed :) but a "Diva" should have more than 3 notes in her throat (2 of which are forced or screamed).
And love, Taylor Swift? Your taste level is on free fall, at this rate you'll go through the center of the earth in 42 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hahahaha once again you misread. Where did I say I in any way ,shape or form come anywhere near even liking Taylor? I in fact used her as an example for the least deserving a vocal profile artists.

Me? I am still waiting in vein for the profiles I'd like to see...Alison Krauss and Anouk.

  25. My first thoughts were that it sounds like Diamonds at times..

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yea, I feel like she was doing a horrible job at faking Rihanna's accent.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Most of them would probably be flabbergasted at that strange and unfamiliar scribbling. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Dude, it's the accent that makes people think Sia imitating Rihanna. For Rihanna it's natural for Sia she's doing it for style. Sia doesn't even have a strong Aussie accent.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It reall depends if she has a good or a bad day. I've heard her live and she yes she does sound scratchy when she sings titanium in particular. But I disagree she's a singer that can hold a decent tune she does have some technical ability and I feel her voice should be accessed just with any other famous recording artist on this site. Her previous work in my opinion is very good maybe not in your eyes primo since you nit pick everything and throw in your classical background to show us how superior you are. But alas its your opinion and respect that.

Well, you sure didn't seem to be defending higher standards :) you seemed to be defending Taylor Swift :)
I don't know about you, but I'd much rather have a handful of diamonds instead a mountain of sand.

  33. she didnt really defend Tswift, she only said that this blog is not just about techs :)) anyway i agree with you, we all should have higher standards :)))

    ReplyDelete
  34. Just curious....Exactly how was I defending Taylor? Which words of mine gave you that impression?

Because I honestly don't see how anyone could read a liking or defense of Taylor Swift in that three line comment of mine.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Actually what I was saying was more along the lines of .... this blog seems to not really have any other standard than somebody, able to, being willing to make the profile.

  42. I'm completely obsessed, with her imperfectly flawless vocals and her consistent ear for fantastic hooks, I'm ready for her return to the throne. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: There's no range of human emotion that Sia cannot envoke with her all-knowing music and voice.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Lounging by the pool and yacht? I feel like there's shade here that I'm not catching onto.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Why do you insist on restricting voice capabilities? "Divas" also had great showmanship and could maintain the crowd's attention without always having to hit a note an octave higher than written. If that were the case, a lot of divas would be bested by a few that are mostly solely mentioned in whistle demonstrations.

Her voice has an odd color to it. It's very unique, especially with her phrasing (something that "Divas" are also expected to hone). More importantly, it goes with her songs.

You also have to keep in mind that almost all of these women have no training and don't want it. She thought Xtina was too exacting technically, so that should show you how much she cares about propriety.

    ReplyDelete
  45. You are obsessed with Alison Krauss, like I'm obsessed with Kate Bush!

    ReplyDelete
  46. She's definitely better than quite a few on here though, and she just has a nice sound to her voice.
    Nicki Minaj
    Ke$ha
Taylor Swift (even though I kinda like her earlier stuff)

    ReplyDelete
  47. "Mmmmmmm hmmm!"

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh damn that was supposed to flow better :-/

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh Kate is also an obsession of mine. But she has been since her very first single (in fact she was my first lesbo crush as a teenager)and there is therefor little of her career I have yet to discover. Plus there is always a long time in between projects. :-(
Alison is a obsession since 2007 and that means a whole back catalog still to explore.

But yes, right with you when it comes to imo one of the few in pop history truly and without exaggeration deserving of the adjective "genius". :-)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Primo Uomo Assoluto18 March 2014 at 21:10

Because singing a C#5 without too much difficulty is hitting notes in the whistle register, right? LMAO.
I've seen performances of her singing "Titanium", she lowers the key by a whole step and still cannot nail the notes. Not impressed.
For showmanship I got Kylie, Mylene, Monica Naranjo, Barbra, Mina, Caterina Valente, Beyonce, Sarah Brightman, Dawn Richards, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Primo Uomo Assoluto18 March 2014 at 21:20

Yes, I was speaking about "Titanium", which is probably her most famous song. And no darling, expecting a singer to be able to sing their songs without too much trouble has nothing to do with classical singing, it is simply having standards.
I'm not superior because of my classical background. I'm superior just by virtue of existing in this world.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Primo Uomo Assoluto18 March 2014 at 21:25

That I'm impressed by the level of your stupidity doesn't mean I lack comprehension about something. The opinion of sheep is irrelevant to a wolf, so please concentrate on what you do best; worshiping basic bitches and working for minimum wage.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Primo Uomo Assoluto18 March 2014 at 21:29

You mentioned my standards as if implying it is something bad, and you mentioned Taylor Swift as someone who is called a "diva". This coupled with your taste for Kelly Clarkson (who is very hit or miss), Miley Cyrus and Christina Aguilera, well...that gives people a certain impression about your taste. And Taylor Swift could very well be part of it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Primo Uomo Assoluto18 March 2014 at 21:40

Because acquiring money immediately makes someone not ghetto, right?
Anyone who has been unfortunate enough to ever catch a couple of minutes of "The real housewives of..." would know the answer. No, class and pedigree are not (solely) about money. And in Jennifer's case, even if the ape is dressed up in silk...it is still an ape.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Again with the, by now obviously deliberately, misreading.
I implied that your standard is so high if if was the standard required for a vocal profile on this blog, this blog would have only between 5 and 10 vocal profiles.

I did not "mention Taylor as someone who is called a "diva" " at all. This is you wildly misreading what I actually wrote.
I pointed at the fact that Taylor Swift does already have a vocal profile on this blog, as do several other very poor singers btw. I mentioned Taylor Swift actually because that to me is the best example of one who is undeserving of a vocal profile on any music blog.

And yes I like Kelly and think she is a very good and skilled singer, not crazy about most of her material though.

I also like Miley but I never once claimed this to be for reason of high technical standard.

And I told you several times but you simply refuse to "compute " this...I think Christina has had some very good performance ( a fact you yourself also pointed out) but also some really horrid ones. And that I in fact am not a fan of Christina. You just got it in your head I am because I criticized your behavior towards those who ARE fans of her. You might want to read over your own reply to Hmmmm as to your "logic" in this matter.

I also happen to like at least 3 of the same singers you like.

And some singers who are technically excellent yet you don't like because they aren't "glamorous" or "strong" in the right manner for your tastes. Or too "butch" or some such utterly subjective and highly personal value.Which it seems btw, unlike my preference for believability, ARE good reasons to prefer a singer. *rolls eyes*

And btw ..no, I cannot believe a woman who pretends to be teenage girl and who sings "love is like a red Maserati" and thinks that is "Country music"..I'd like to see her drive that "love analogy" on a Tennessee dirt road. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  56. Well music is art and there should be freedom of expression. I don't care if your technically trained or not if you can make feel 'emotionally moved' you've done your job as an artist. Music is about feeling and Sia has done that time after time. She can lower the step of the song all she likes but regardless that song titanium is autotuned in itself so I understand. FYI monobrow do not call me darling again

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh dude! BIG MISTAKE!!!
I have had that discussion with Primo a zillion times by now. Prepare yourself to be insulted on a range of imaginary facts regarding every aspect of your life, looks, socio-economic status, education, sexuality and what have you. :-)
And then to be forever misread and misinterpreted in any future comment.

    ReplyDelete
  58. It's not the accent... Australian singers don't sing like that, haha, check out Samantha Jade or Jessica Mauboy for some Australian singers with more "normal" enunciation.
It's all an artistic choice, that's how she wants to sound. I'm used to Sia so I didn't have the trouble understanding it, but I get that people will do.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Well I don't really see any clear "ghetto" behavior. Unless maybe you're talking about her talking with "ghetto" slang, but I don't really think that makes anyone less of a person than who they are.

    ReplyDelete
  60. But Jlo is kinda ghetto to me... It's not a bad thing because Whitney was a little ghetto too... so I don't know how people would take that as necessarily a bad thing...

It does not really transpire in music, but i guess if you are uptight and require people to behave in your standards then I guess it does...

    ReplyDelete
  61. Insulting someone else's personal preferences and making assumptions about socioeconomic status?! Not the type of behavior I'd expect from such a refined musician as yourself, but I guess education does not buy class. I believe most people would find a comment such as "worshiping basic bitches" to be rather classless.

    ReplyDelete
  62. thedigblackbick19 March 2014 at 01:10

Yeah I definitely had trouble. I've heard a few Aussie singers, and some have a very heavy accent and it can be troubling trying to decode what they're saying. Perhaps it is artistic. It's weird though, I've heard her in Titanium and I could figure out every word she said. ...hm...

    ReplyDelete
  63. thedigblackbick19 March 2014 at 01:10

Who then, is the rich man's Rihanna?

    ReplyDelete
  64. LOL! You're such an ass wipe haha!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Undoubtedly that was a train wreck, cringe-worthy actually. However, that isn't remotely as defining as a lot of her other performances. Kelly, like most singers, had an off day. That happened to be off the planet LOL! But, that accounts for a mere fraction. Kelly's better performances astronomically transcend performances like these, as awful as this one was. I'm inclined to believe you aren't as familiar with Kelly as a vocalist because it's (or it should be) evident that vocally she's by far one of the most gifted of this generation. Kelly's absolute best vocal performances are unparalleled by most. I get it, she isn't your cup of tea, but to judge her off of this performance alone? You're looking but not really seeing. Kelly's voice, I think, is phenomenal. In no way, shape or form is it fragile. Infact, it's quite impeccable for a Lyric Instrument. Kelly's voice as a Lyric could easily be pushed without that fragile quality and has in the past. She can easily tackle large vocal climaxes and passages without "breaking". That is a voice that knows no boundaries. Yes, Kelly has improved IMMENSELY in the last 9 years. She can easily resonate in the Soprano tessitura a lot more consistently now, & the placement is infinitely better THANK GOD. She's been able to sing the infamous G5 with little to no strain. She can sustain it with an even mix AND without forcing the vibrato. In the past she could do it too, but she had a lot of off moments. Also, I'd like to note that most times (especially now) that Kelly's rasp is a conscious thing so that it sometimes fits the style, which shows excellent musicianship. She's a versatile vocalist. Honestly, if you see her best moments you just may change your view about her.

I don't think I've actually insulted you on "imaginary" aspects, love.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Primo if your so "straight" why are you on this site that is predominantly feminine. I mean you must be so macho to spend your time listening to females singers...oh wait isn't that gay bitch?! Like half have the time your criticizing young gay men for who they are. Maybe your closeted struggleing to accept yourself which is really sad. Its ok to stay in the closet I mean there's nothing wrong with that. As in the words of Christina: YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL IN EVERY SINGLE WAY WORDS CAN'T BRING YOU DOWN!!! LOVE YOURSELF PRIMO HAHA #lettherebelove #primopizza #prayforprimo

    ReplyDelete
  68. He has never acknowledged his sexuality though, I don't think. Personally speaking, even if he is "Gay/Bi-Sexual", he has a right to his, overall, opinion. It's how you internalize it as the person on the receiving end of which determines the power of his words albeit what he said to you wasn't very nice at all. However, in actuality, the truth is that there are a large proportion of "Gay- males" that vicariously align themselves and their lives with female celebrities for a sense of self-security and I don't understand why because I have never done such. He did make a point there.

On the other hand, I'm an open- Bi-Sexual male and know multiple-dozens of "Masculine"- Gay men of whom openly dislike/criticize "Feminine/Effeminate"- Gay Men all the time. There are those who say that it's a sign of 'internal prejudice' but I refuse to believe so. Nonetheless, many Gay clubs are becoming notorious for such means, especially here in London and whenever I go to New York or L.A; I've been to plenty and constantly witness the social separation between the "Macho- Gay men" and the "Camp- Gay Men", they each stay in their corners and rarely mix. It's a deep issue.

  69. Lucky for you I am around then.

  70. LOL No you never managed it. But you tried hon, you tried! ;-)
Anyway, I wasn't just thinking of me. Just describing your usual pattern. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Seriously dude? Sent you an album from Holland? LOL Heard of the internet? Go to youtube love. Several full albums on there and it so happens her new live album just dropped and I just posted the link to the full album in this blog.
But as usual you are missing the point. You don't have to like Anouk or Kelly. I am simply saying that people could be liking different singers than you do and still have good taste.

But not in your mind of course. As your response here is all about trying to "attack" singers I like, using those subjective judgments you keep telling others they shouldn't use when judging artists. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Wouldn't say there is much doubt though...judging by his videos.
But indeed it A: makes no difference and B:yes, the generalizations are correct. But they are called "generalizations" for a reason. Namely...you cannot go around assuming someone is a full on stereotype solely because he likes a certain singer or has a different view on one matter than you hold. Which is what primo keeps doing.

    ReplyDelete
  84. if she has a whistle register she would have proudly showed it more than ariana do in her songs bc she's kind of "show-off" singer who like to show what they can do vocally..

    ReplyDelete
  87. She's doing better than a lot of 2013, but despite this redundancy, she's still sick and it could have part to do with song choices. We'll see with her next album and whatever cover she next decides to do for the tour because she said she wanted to go harder with the next album and that she was gonna surprise people with a brand new cover. She'll get there. She's talented and she may have fallen, but she'll get there because I sense a spirit of hard working and drive in her.

  90. She hasn't done this song in a year now, she might be tired of it, but I'm surprised since she does want to show off her vocals skills. What type of performances are you looking for exactly besides ones of this song? IMO, she has had some great performances.

    ReplyDelete
  91. aren't that soundcheck performance like 7 months old?LMAO you're acting like she can't sing anymore, relax take a deep breathe she has gone under tonsillectomy and it'll take time to recover,i'm sure in 2,3 months she'll get back to her normal self

    ReplyDelete
  92. this is sad but i think her unbroken era was her peak bc she's continuosly declining since then her performance have no energy like it used to have, she's unable to hit high notes like she used to did... https://vine.co/v/MMlPm7tdU0H

    ReplyDelete
  93. Nah like people have been saying, she's been sick a lot because her immune system sucks. She had her tonsils removed which not only set her back(esp since she jumped right back into singing) but didn't actually help her. She did it so she wouldn't get sick as often. She was 18-19. It simply can't be her peak. She just needs to give herself some rest because she's been having some amazing moments here and there. It's so shrouded by the fact she's always sick.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Agreed. Right now I think that the best for her is to take a break from touring, rest her voice, center in coaching it and improving her technique and thinking of new song ideas. Then she'll be able to make a huge comeback.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Unfortunately now, I think she's planning on doing a world tour. I don't know when, but she seems to be planning it some time soon. I guess we'll have to see what happens, otherwise her comeback will come even later.

    ReplyDelete
  96. She'll be alright, once she stops touring so much, and works on RESTING her voice. Powerhouse Demi is still in there. we see Glimpses every now and then.. but just wait... She's coming back.
