Alt-Diva Grimes faced a Mogo-sized backlash from fans when last track, Go, aired on YouTube in 2014.
Even though the track was initially created for Rihanna, the knowledge of this didn't help salve the butt-hurt fans who felt betrayed by the drastic change in style. (Seriously, I have never seen a fandom go off on an artist like that.) This wasn't something that went unnoticed by the Diva, who, instead of sticking a middle finger up at the crybabies and affirming her own artistry,
Under the weight of this criticism, the Diva continued to throw the baby out with the bathwater, scrapping all the new material she had recorded for the follow up to 2012's Visions. She didn't blame the fans for this, saying it "sucked, so I threw it out and started again". However, I can't help thinking the two things are related.
So here we are today, and Grimes has released the video for a song called REALiTi . Still not music from the new album, but a "special thank you to everyone in Singapore, KL, Manila, Jakarta, HK, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Seoul, Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo who came out to the shows!". With the production sounding kinda "commercial", the Diva has preempted the stupidity of some of her more hardcore fans, and turned off the comments on the video from the outset. It's a shame because I'd love to read their thoughts on this song. Is she expressing herself (in the way they want) here, or not? Or is this still too mainstream (in their opinion) for Grimes?
Personally, REALiTi is a little flat for my immediate liking. But guess what I'm not going to do: Badger the artist about it!
