I love how the judges on The Voice get up on that same stage as the contestants and show- via 100% live vocals- why they have the right to be judging other people's talent. With new album Lotus to promote, Christina Aguilera was the latest of the line-up to put her money where her mouth is and perform on the main stage.

Rihanna is back on the album promo trail- yes, she has another album out about a year after the last- and touched down on the set of Saturday Night Live to showcase two tracks from the November 19th released Unapologetic.

First up was new single Diamonds, which was accompanied by some weird animated background that initially had me worried was a ploy by directors to distract us from the potentially damaging vocal that was to come. But it wasn't that bad. Honestly.

I've been really interested in hearing Rihanna sing Diamonds live ever since the song debuted in September. With the sustained belting being quite extensive throughout, I did wonder if the Barbadian beauty was going to be able to maintain the stamina - let alone hit the notes- when it eventually came to performing live.

Vocal Pluses: Naya Rivera has great control of her instrument. This allows her to sing complex melisma; hold notes for extended periods of time without wavering in pitch; and helps her to excellently control the dynamic and timbre of her voice [Hear Songbird]

Strong lower-range that extends to the bottom of the third octave. The notes produced here are full, rounded and of medium weight, but are accessed effortlessly meaning they don't have the foggy quality some Divas exhibit when hitting lower notes [hear Boy Is Mine]. 

Her belting range as a whole has a light, bright, and youthful colouring to it with a slight rasp at times. Both the notes at the top of the fourth octave and those well into the fifth octave sound to be achieved via great technique, thus producing notes that have an easy quality to them, with a consistent tone and timbre.

Naya Rivera primarily uses falsetto to reach the higher notes. This means notes produced have an airy sound, with a warm and light quality to them. Using her falsetto to hit notes makes it easier for her to flip between registers, but it is possible for her to create notes with her head voice- like the exclamations in Smooth Criminal- which are weightier and have a stronger dynamic.

Vocal Negatives: The voice can sometimes have a slight nasal quality to it.

Jessie Ware continues to impress me with her musical output. The South London born singer's debut studio album Devotion has already joined the ranks of my favourite albums of 2012; and her choice to now cover Brownstone's brilliant 1994 hit If You Love Me- boy does that bring back memories- only exacerbates my fondness for the rising star.

The notable absence of a post on Ke$ha's comeback single Die Young should speak for itself. It's not that I hated it, it was just that it sounded all kinds of generic, without any one thing to reel me. Hence it quickly dropping off my radar. However, her first live performance of the song on the Australian X-Factor has made me sit up (slightly) and take notice again.

The first time we heard (a snippet of) Mariah Carey singing Bring It On Home, it was during an Obama fundraiser earlier this year. Well it's no surprise that the full song has now been released, the day after President Obama won his second term in the White House.

Christina Aguilera and Mary J Blige were two females representing the Divas at the Coming Together benefit concert in aid of those who have suffered under Hurricane Sandy. The one-hour concert was aired on American network NBC and managed to raise an impressive 23 million dollars for the victims of the natural disaster, with donations still coming in.
