[Review] Song Run-Down, Eurovision 2016

EUROVISION TIMEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Watched by 200 million people over 50 countries, the state-spanning song contest is once again upon Europe (and some other honorary countries). Today I am going to be writing up the review as it happens. To the uninitiated, the opening catwalk is a great metaphor for the contest as a whole:it's camp and ever so slightly ridiculous.

Being hosted in Stockholm, Sweden, this year's theme is apparently "come together". How lovely! It mirrors the original sentiment of the first show which was started as a way to rebuild relationships post World War 2. Sure, make friends by having a competition(!) Genius.

Anyway, it's starting! Let's get ready for some Euro-centric fun.

Note:Each song is being reviewed as I listen and in show order. I've not heard any of the entries before, and after a brief blurb they'll be given a rating out of 5 Euros (5 being Euro-rific, 1 being Euro-trash).

[Free For All Friday]

I see you!

If you don't know the score, here be the rules:
  • Try not to get too perverted- this site needs to basically be "safe for work".
  • If somebody starts a controversial subject, try keeping it civil when dealing with it. If things get out of hand please flag the conversation.
  • It would be nice if it stuck to music, but it's not a requirement! So talk about news, current events, how you're getting your hair done next time you hit the hairdresser! Whateves, really!
  • No nasty comments aimed at other users.
Inappropriate hugs to all of y'all (hi-fives to the underagers), and wishing you an awesome weekend!

[Get Ready for the Feels] Andra Day - "Love Is Love"

Ok, all you cold-ass bitches, challenge time!

Let's see if I can't melt that ice block around your heart, and make you feel a modicum of something other than apathy, today. The Diva that will be helping me achieve this near-impossible feat is Andra Day. All I ask is that you spare five minutes to watch the M. Night Shyamalan-directed promo for her new single, Love Is Love.

If, after doing so, you fail to be moved in any way, please consult the coroner. You iz dead, gurl!

Kesha covers "Til It Happens To You" @ "To the Rescue!" Gala

We previously discussed how powerful a song Lady Gaga's Til It Happens To You is when she performed it live for the audience at this year's Oscars.

Being a song about abuse, yesterday it took on an even more resonant timbre when it was covered by Kesha at To The Rescue! Gala. Though not as vocally showy as Gaga's approach, the song was no less impactful, with the lyric emotively expressed through the Diva's softer approach.

[Music Video] Pink And Disney Team-Up For Release, "Just Like Fire"

Super-duper successful touring artist, Pink has returned to the main stage.

Having last been heard on the low-key Rose Ave back in 2014, the Diva has flipped and reversed, returning with a track for the (sure to be) blockbuster that is Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass. Can't get any more mainstream than that!

As you'd expect from working with Disney, Just Like Fire sounds like it's been neutered. The essence of Pink is there, but lacking is the edge and character the Diva usually throws at us. The video tries to make up for this, being comedic and quirky. But it's like adding salt to my eyes instead of my soup. Right thing, wrong place!

Neutered or not, it's good to have one of our feistier Divas back on the scene.
