[Q&A] Could Selena Gomez Be The Next Whitney Houston?

Everyone has an email address, me included. And since it's out there for all to hit me up on (heeeeey!), it's inevitable that I get questions sent to me regarding Divas. So as of today, I'll be posting my answers to some of these questions under the new heading of Q&A.

Sometimes they'll be in-depth. Sometimes they'll be flippant. But one thing they'll always be, is posted with the mailer's consent.

If you want to ask me a question for this segment, you can do so @Divadevotee on Twitter, or via email [divadevotee@gmail.com].

[Free For All Friday]

Don't even have time to find another gif. Straight cut and paste job from a few weeks back! IM LATE!!!

If you don't know the score, here be the rules:
  • Try not to get too perverted- this site needs to basically be "safe for work".
  • If somebody starts a controversial subject, try keeping it civil when dealing with it. If things get out of hand please flag the conversation.
  • It would be nice if it stuck to music, but it's not a requirement! So talk about news, current events, how you're getting your hair done next time you hit the hairdresser! Whateves, really!
  • No nasty comments aimed at other users.
Inappropriate hugs to all of y'all (hi-fives to the underagers), and wishing you an awesome weekend!

Christina Aguilera Returns With Sia-Penned "Telepathy"

Disco is my genre, so when I read Christina Aguilera's new track Telepathy dabbled in the '70s sound, I was so ready for it.

Penned by Sia and produced by Stargate, the track immediately brought to mind Daft Punk's Get Lucky, with a similar guitar loop and tempo. Not a great start. However, Christina's vocal styling saved it from becoming too derivative, with falsetto notes, runs and edgy belts out in force. They're just not executed to the usual standard you'd hear on a Christina Aguilera studio cut- sounding somewhat sloppy. (Admittedly that could be the fault of the mix.)

Leona Lewis Soars On Broadway With Cats' "Memory"

It seems to be the case that when a singer's career is derailed, they head over to the West End/Broadway to get a role in a musical. Realistically this wouldn't be an option for someone like, say, Katy Perry, but X-Factor winner Leona Lewis, is a different calibre of singer.

[Watch] Ariana Grande Lazily Covers Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" and "Queen Of The Night"

Ariana Grande has covered Whitney Houston A LOT.

With that being the case, not only is it natural for us to compare her to the source material; but we are also- probably more fairly- able to contrast it to the high standard she has previously attained covering The Voice. That in mind, I can say that this tribute wasn't one of her best for me.

Lazy and uninspired, were actually the two words left with me post viewing. I know that sounds harsh, but let me explain. Initially I was into it, but as the How Will I Know and Queen of the Night medley chugged along it became apparent that this was a performance by numbers. Instead of embodying or channelling either song, Ariana was breezing through the performances as if on autopilot. The head notes that punctuated the latter song were particularly telling, being repetitive and stale.

JoJo Gives Us An Acoustic Taste Of "Apologies"

JoJo shines brightest in an acoustic setting, as far as I'm concerned.

And the live showing of her latest single F%%k Apologies at the Elvis Duran Show proved this once again for me. Not only were the lyrics popping more, but the vocal was infused with an emotion that was lacking in the polished studio version.

Truthfully, not the biggest fan of the song, but the acoustic rendition has made me appreicate it that lickle bit more. Will "Aplolgies" give JoJo her first taste of chart success in ...lets just say... a while. Listen to both versions and decide for yourself.
