Review: Lady Gaga "Born this way" So bad it's terrible!

The hype for Lady Gaga's new single Born this way has been building steadily for months. A hype I readily admit being caught up in, and finally today, after it's release date was pushed a week forward, we got a chance to hear a song that, according to Elton John, would "obliterate 'I Will Survive'".

Alarm bells should have been heeded about the potential crumminess of the impending Born this way when the childlike lyrics were released a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, being a fan and wanting the song to be as epic as promised, I swept the bad lyrics under the "commendable message" carpet and trusted in Gaga's strength of melody and music to carry the song to the promised greatness.

Depressingly, Born this way doesn't just fail to live up to the hype, which to be honest was never going to happen, but more worryingly for what's to come with the album, it fails to succeed in even being a good song. The production and melody sound mediocre at best but even worse is how it sounds like a gayer- who would have thought possible- rehash of Madonna's classic Express yourself (listen to the similarities here)

Young fans may hear Born this way as something new, inspiring and exciting and good for them, it can be their generations (watered-down-version) of Express yourself. However, there are songs out there that get across the same message more eloquently, more sincerely and a whole lot better than Gaga's has here- just contrast it to Marvin Gayes' Whats Going on. "Obliterate 'I Will Survive'"? HA!

  1. I've seen your other posts praising Gaga and like you I am a fan but this is just trash.

Just because the subject matter is inspiring it does not make the song good.

  2. I'm gay and even I feel like Gaga is riding our pink band wagon too hard and too fast.

  3. wow, two comments already. Thanks for not jumping down my throat, and yes I am a fan. Also thanks for taking the time to see some of my other posts and not just calling me out as a Hater.

  4. The song is mediocre. I really wish it wasn't, but it is. I am a huge GAGA fan, and have been to see her 3 times. The song does not sound like a single at all, more like the 9th track on an album. So underwhelmed and disappointed :(

  5. This should have been the last single like an album closer... Theres nothing infectious about this song at all

  6. Whatever, you would have trashed Express Yourself when it debuted. Bitter and jaded....all of you!

  7. I absolutely LOVE it! Well done GaGa, well done!

  8. No one seems bitter at all and interestingly most of us are Gaga fans and wonder why this is the kick-off to an "album of the decade"

  9. Not a Gaga fan.
This new song merely reminded me why I am not.

I respect that you like the song but please refrain from churlish comments and tell me why you like it. Perhaps I'll see what you see and the song will grow on me.

Also, I have a post that says how I felt when "Express yourself" debuted and it was pretty much the opposite to what I feel about "Born this way". I think gaga herself probably remembers that feeling, hence her trying to recreate that with this song.

  11. As I expected the song is terrible and to be honest, so is Gaga. The comparisons to Madonna are a joke. Gaga does not have Madonna's sex appeal(she looks FUG on the new Vogue) nor does she have Madonna's stage presence or star appeal. Gaga is too gimmicky and as a gay man I refuse to jump on the band wagon. Young girls and gay men worshipped Madonna because she was empowering, ballsy and the ultimate champ; Gaga on the other hand is condescending (little monsters...how pathetic) and appears to have the loser brigade behind her. Please make her and desperate antics go away already!!!

    Thank you for that.

  13. Honestly, without the name Gaga attached to this (and her major PR machine) would anyone listen to this song more than once? On purpose that is.

  14. I LOVE Born This Way! It makes me want to dance not analyze the lyrics!

  15. @Graveetas I wish i could do the same, but the music itself just sounds bad to me.

Usually I love tacky, high camp, dance music-see Danni Mingoues "all i wanna do" and Gala's Freed from desire- but Born this way is in another league.

  16. Warning:
Just some more notes after listening to the song Many more times:

I just find the whole song exploitive and dumbed down. I know people are commending Gagas' courage for mentioning "transgender" and "Gay" in the lyrics, but please, this is 2011, if it had been a decade ago I might have given more credit. But Bottom line is no one is shocked or surprised by her choice of words.

Give me Katy Perrys "Fireworks", Pinks "Raise your glass up" or even Ke$has "we R who we R". I don't care who wrote, or produced them, I just know that they make me feel more inspired and lifted than Gaga's effort.

  17. Honestly, this is what I expected it to be. Lady Gaga has never really had any substantial songs and if for some reason you really think she does just go listen to her lyrics and then go listen to someone like adele. The beats are good (which is what makes gagas songs) but the lyrics are always mediocre. Don't get me wrong I like Lady Gaga but I never expected her to really blow me away.

  18. @anon above. Depressingly I'm starting to regret writing a post, not too long ago, arguing how there's more to Gaga than just her image.

Please let the upcoming album reaffirm my faith in Gaga

  19. I agree COMPLETELY.
    I'm a huge Gaga fan. I'm gay. I'm disappointed....good message or not.
    ugh...

  20. @anon 21:40-i really wish you guys would use names, even if they're fake, makes responding easier- I love Adele, and have written posts about her.

What is funny- or sad depending how you look at it- is Rolling stones Magazine gave Adele's "Rolling in the deep" 3.5/5 stars but Gaga's "Born this way" 4/5.

I'm starting to think I'm missing something with Gaga's track.

  21. I'm scared more and more about this type of communication just for that people buy when like for example when she and her team said that is a future gay anthem...It's like to force people to admit it like a dictate...Gay songs are chosen by gay people.
A artist can be inspired by, or pay a tribute for a other artist. But in this track (new?) the line are totally the same...were is creativity? The problem is not just about Gaga...the problem is the crisis in musical industry...majors need to sell a lot...Gaga was create for that. That result poor and quick production for radio. Medias have a big part of responsabilties about this new bussiness way.

  22. I think it's a really fun song :)

  23. I find the song utterly forgettable. But unlike every other Gaga song, there is no stuttering nonsensical gibberish making me want to shove sharpened pencils into my ears. It certainly is an anthem song (the only actual resemblance to "Express Yourself" BTW--the pop anthem song structure, that is), whether it will surpass "I Will Survive", meh, only time will tell, but I doubt it. Bless her, however, for actually writing a song specifically about the mo's instead of just attaching meaning after the fact like the above mentioned Pink, Perry (not the best ally really), and Ke$ha whose songs were all recorded and mastered prior to the mass suicides of the babes this past year, which is, from what I understand, why Gaga actually wrote "Born This Way." Strangely, I really like the song when I hear it and am looking forward to seeing how Gaga matures as an artist on her next album based on this sample--having found the last 1.5 album completely unlistenable after the first couple of spins (not aided by the fact that she was completely overplayed on the radio). But like I said earlier, the song doesn't linger as it should. I've already forgotten how it goes.

  24. I'm a bisexual girl and feel totally patronised by her deliberate attempts to get the big gay following. I've always said she will be the first celebrity to be outed as a straight lol!!

Her lyrics - which she only co-writes and not always with the first credit - are always childishly simple.

I used to be a huge fan of hers, because finally a singer seemed to appreciate dancy, catchy bubblegum pop. But I've gone off her because she's so contrived and not as talented as so likes us to think.

Her good luck was meeting the incredibly talented RedOne, who made her repetitive generic songs the hits they became. But she's got a different producer on Born This Way.

I've heard it many times now and can't even remember how it goes.
The litmus test is - if no one knew the singer would it have been a hit? Of course not, it sounds like a losing Eurovision entry.

As for the cheesy subject, does anyone really want to hear a (probably heterosexual!) white woman born into huge wealth patronising everyone??? It's easy for YOU to say GaGa!

Born this way, An embarrassing desperate piece of rubbish accompanied by a long-winded, boring and messy video. I just don't get Gaga and never will. Not even comparable to Madonna.....don't even go there!

  27. lady gaga's music stinks almost as bad as kim kardashian's ass.

  28. Lady Gaga has a lot of fake profiles and comments her videos and articles herself. She was a huge viral marketing product. But in the end she always needed to copy from others to make it work. Now everybody starts to realize the truth about her and she has to use her own inspiration more. So you see what comes out then.
Have a look at the video"Who is Ysan Roche?" on youtube and see who Gaga copied for many years, you will get some incredible new impressions.

  29. I mean, what did you expect? The greatest song of all centuries? Gaga is nothing but a fake, bland and boring copycat. Her songs sucks and her image is completely unoriginal. She was a sellout from the start, but many teens at my school will still think this is the best gay anthem they have ever heard. I feel sorry for my gay friends, they apparently dont have a great taste in music and don´t know Gaga is doing all this spectacles for marketing purposes.

  30. I wish your review was spread our over the Networks. The Media hacks think she is so excellent. She is overexposed and yes, just a B track one trick pony. She wants a Movie made about her and she even said this after she was only known for maybe a year. The arrogance of her. Why make a movie, except to show her freak outfits definitely not for her music.

  31. HAHAHAHAHA
GAGA HAS SO MANY HATERS THAT GO ON HER VIDEOS AND HER ARTICLES TO WASTE TIME HATING ON HER - ITS FUNNY CUZ THESE HATERS ONLY MAKE HER EVEN MORE FAMOUS AND ARE THE REASON WHY SHE IS THE MOST POWERFUL CELEB IN THE WORLD (ACCORDING TO FORBES)
I AGREE THE SONG IS BLEH THO.... XD

  33. its sad that people dont see that she is so good to the LGBT community - she has done so much for them in fact my friend was thinking of commiting suicide but we met gaga backstage at the monster ball and she basically saved his life telling him that its okay to be different
and wtf no one ever said greatest song of all centuries
