[Listen] Emeli Sande Gives Beyonce's "Crazy In Love" A 1920's Makeover For Gatsby Soundtrack

Beyonce didn't even try to capture the 1920's spirit of The Great Gatsby with her cover of Amy Winehouse's Back To Black. But thankfully Emeli Sande and the Bryan Ferry Orchestra were a little more sensitive when reworking Bey's own Crazy In Love. (Check out executive producer of the soundtrack, Jay-Z, making sure his wife (and himself) get another paycheck from writing credits off of the album! Nepotism at its finest!)

Now I know a lot of you guys aren't exactly enamoured with Emeli- well, if the comments on her vocal profile are to be believed- but I have to give her, and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, props for at least trying to deliver an authentic 20's sound. With it's muted trumpets and jaunty rhythm, the song practically paints a picture of bob-haired flappers getting down in trendy, smoke-filled jazz bars.

Take a listen to the song, lifted, of course, from The Great Gatsby soundtrack, below.

Thoughts?

  1. I quite like the instrumental, but as good as Emeli is, in my opinion it kind of feels like her voice doesn't quite fit with the song, especially genre. But that's just me. Better than the "Back to Black" cover.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I love the instrumental. Emile's nice too, but it doesn't touch the original. I like it better than "Black to Black" on a whole though.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I really enjoy the instrumentation on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Meh... both versions just 'meh' to me. I do like Emeli's better... but that's probably just because her phrasing is more interesting and her singing less robotic. And her voice as a whole sounds more unique to me.

Also... Beyonce's voice was so light in this song!

    ReplyDelete
  5. It's pretty cool!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Funny enough, the original is one of the most critically acclaimed pop songs of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Unsurprising. Pop critics have always been shallow and highly receptive to bad music.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Lol took the words right out of my mouth. If yours hadn't been the top comment I'd probably have posted the same thing.

Only problem with that ''mum singer'' theory...I probaby could be your mum and I completely agree with you here.

And I didn't even buy Believe. Prefer ''older'' music. ;-D

  9. Bad music? Again, it's been refered to as a pop masterpiece. It was critically lauded, it won a Grammy, numerous song of the year awards, and sold amazingly worldwide. It's classic till this day, the GP can easily recognize the horn line and the "woh oh oh oh oh no no no". You can not like it, but to say it is musically bad is pushing it a little.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Arthur, dearest, call it whatever you like. It doesn't make it true.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It's not what I call it, it's what critics call it. Whether it's true or not is irrelevant, this is all opinion. However, it's still remembered after 10 years, which is more than I can say for most pop hits. This makes the song a classic.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Still remembered after ten years? Where? Honestly, I haven't even heard this song until today.

But whatever. If this song's perceived status as a ...'classic' is so important to you, I won't argue.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well for one, considering it's being covered, it shows it is still remembered. Secondly, it's the second best selling single since 2000, which means it is still being bought.
It's considered a classic by most people. Just because you don't like Beyonce doesn't mean you have to deny a pretty much universally accepted thought.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The points I would like to dispute are as follows:
    1. That a song must be remembered by the GP in order to be covered.
    2. That it's universally accepted that this song is a classic.

As promised, I will not debate this song's condition as a classic.

  15. I definitely disagree with Beyonce's voice being "light" on this track. In comparison to Emeli, Beyonce's voice sounds much larger and much more powerful on her version, especially near the end. I'm not a fan of Emeli's version because it feels as though little effort was put into it vocally, but I enjoy the music itself.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Light as in vocal weight, not size.

Also, I was comparing to Beyonce now, not Emeli.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Not all covered songs are remembered by th GP. In this particular instance it does suggest this though. Because it's for a soundtrack and all.
Universal in the realm of pop music.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I actually understood your comparison.
My segue into comparing Emeli was supporting my own opinion on why I'm not a fan of her version.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It doesn't work imo, but at least she attempted to deliver a sound that better suits the soundtrack and film.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm just going to interject for a moment to say that you might want to check your facts Arthur. Crazy in Love is not the second best selling single since 2000, Wherever and Whenever by Shakira is. Also, if you account for the digital sales of this past decade she ranks even further down that list. Either way, sales do not make a song a classic. Just to put thinks in perspective for you: The Black Eyed Peas currently hold the record for the highest selling digital single of all time with "I got a feeling", and I don't think anyone considers that travesty to music a classic.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I should really have said (in the post) that I don't actually like the song very much. ..lol. Just putting that out there.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Kudos to you Reiko. I'd stop wasting my time halfway but you've persevered it with him throughout the whole way. I believe @Opie Ever and I have given up trying. Good luck to you, Reiko.
Though, Opie still occasionally have fun. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. That's a terrible argument. Would they deem bad and repitive music music as a classic?
Secondly, that's a very closed minded view. Yes, there is bad pop music, but there's also good pop music. The Beatles are pop music icons, Madonna, Frank Sinatra, your fave, Mariah Carey, they are all pop music icons. So does that make them bad and repitive?
Also, the more you call this song poor musically, the stupider you look. The horn lines in this song have been called genius.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Using your own argument, does it ever occur to you that you guys are the people at fault? I'm actually arguing something that critics agree with. While you guys are blindly bashing something because you don't like Beyonce.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Indeed Ricky! I have thrown in the towel. It is hopeless to try amd get through a massive wall with just words.
I mean..case in point. Someone says 'popmusic is receptive to bad music ' and the wall reads 'all popmusic is bad music''.
    *rolls eyes"

    ReplyDelete
  26. I barely made an argument out of that, but anyways, yes it is. http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/yradish/biggest-selling-singles-since-the-year-2000.html

    ReplyDelete
  27. And I'm sure Jay Z would pick any old Beyonce song and put it on a soundtrack. Assuming he wants the soundtrack to be commercially successful, he would put a cover of a classic song on said soundtrack. The logic behind Beyonce covering "Back To Black", as well.

I'd tell you to have a seat Dopie, but alas, all of them are taken.

  28. Rofl thanks wall. For finally admitting you and 'Scoopz'' are in fact one and the same. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Actually scratch that, this list is dated.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Not sure how that post suggested that... but okay! Keep showing the world how insecure you are Dopie.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Of course you don't get how your posts give you away. If you were aware of it, you might possibly have the good sense not to post it. Though that might be wishful thinking from my part. I wouldn't, tbh, put money on you having even that much good sense. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. LOLLLLLLL!!!! I didn't buy believe because I was like 8 years old but I love it XD. My mom's singer is Adam Lambert but I reallly get the point hahahaa.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Typical Dopie not responding to the crux of my statement the minute she notices she was wrong. I have a suggestion, instead of coming to completetely irrational conclusions, ask DD himself!

    ReplyDelete
  34. @ arthur @facebook-100000090078915 no idea what is going on, but perhaps we should call it a day on this tête-à-tête?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Are you new? If so, welcome! :D

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, they would. Hence "Hero" and "Beautiful" being deemed classics.

I never said that all pop music is bad, Arthur. I simply said that pop is receptive to bad music. And I'm not quite sure about the others, but Mariah has been very repetitive in the past. For instance, "I Only Wanted" and "After Tonight" are both rehashes of "My All", while "Through the Rain" is a pale recreation of "Hero".

    ReplyDelete
  37. DD I three times suggested to Arthur to agree to not respond to eachother's posts any more. He refused to come to such an agreement. I tried and ignored him adressing me several times but he insist on continuing to respond to my comments.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, Arthur. We are all mindlessly bashing Beyonce because we aren't praising her. And you are always right because a few music critics share your opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What a kiss ass you are xD but that's fine. Didn't know I was of such distress to you. Bye darling.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Grow up.

    ReplyDelete
  41. That's not why I suggested that. You, like Opie, need to stop coming to these conclusions. The evidence is there in my favor. Not a few critics, almost every review you see for the song is one praising it. It's clear that you guys always bash Beyonce, no matter what she does.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Let me make something clear to you Arthur. Most reviews are opinions. Opinions are biased and subjective. Therefore, they cannot be used as 'evidence'.

And no, we do not bash Beyonce no matter what she does. I seem to recall overhwelming praise from nearly all of us the other day. And in case you need to refresh your memory, here is a link:

    ReplyDelete
  43. So are you agreeing to not respond to eachother's comments anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  44. a little shade here :P

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes, Opie. I have just had one of THOSE epiphanies. You know, the kind when something you already know REALLY starts to make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lol I'm intrigued but neither sure what your epiphany was on exactly nor of the wisdom of discussing it in a open forum if it is on what I think it might be?
But, seeing as I'm a kiss ass anyway....since I like you, please feel free to contact me on that facebook account in my profile. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lol I think we're thinking of totally different things.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Haha then please...do elaborate. What was your epiphany?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Beautiful actually is not a bad song. Lyrically it's great, as well as vocally. Hero is only a classic because it's kind've a special event standard.

You said that pop is very receptive to bad music, which suggests that bad music thrives in pop. Because those artists thrived, you could have very well meant that they made bad music. Yes to some degree she is, but musically her songs are quite stunning. Hence why she's an inspiration to so many singers.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Again not a very good argument. Not all of Beyonce's material is critically praised. In fact, Crazy In Love is her most praised. Music reviews are not subjective at all. At least not credible ones.
That was one event. There's no denying that there's been more bashing than praising. My main complaint towards you guys is that you're very hyper-critical of her.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yup. :) Buy-bye.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I just scrolled down and saw the most peculiar argument ever... So I feel rectification on pop music must be stated.
    1. Pop music is a mixed bag of craziness and what makes a song good to one mag make a song horrible to another.
    2. Pop music in its entirety falls under many echelons. It is impossible for someone to be completely liberal with pop music. I can definitely say I'm not liberal. I listen to what appeals to my ears and at times I get superficial and shallow, refusing listen to an artist for... God knows why.
    3. A critical reference is invalid because it is all opinion. What makes good music good music these days would have made sucky music seventy years ago and vice versa. As times change, so do opinions.
    4. When a critic reviews pop music and a positive review comes from it, it should not also be your opinion. Again, since pop music is such a mixed bag of crazy, you take reviews with a grain of salt. Following what a critic says is probably the dumbest bias known to pop music. Each and every person should have their opinion on what makes good pop music.
    5. What makes good pop music? Hell if I know... I'll just state my tastes. I enjoy well written music that sounds like it wasn't recorded in like 5 hours. I want to listen to something that sounded like it took days to record just to convey the correct message. Don't get me wrong, there are some ridiculous songs I thoroughly enjoy but they make up a small percentage of what I listen to.
    6. Last... With pop music being so diverse, please...I mean please.... Respect others and their opinions...even if their opinion releases the inner demon... Just don't sit there, have a redundant argument, and waste all that bandwidth...oops I meant try to change their opinions. Debating is one thing but there is a clear distinction between stanning and debating.

Anyways, I appreciate all y'all for giving your opinions on my Sandé. And I do prefer hers to the original. The original sounded...if this makes sense...uneducated while Sandé's sounded wiser and from the perspective of a woman who doesn't you know... Lays with dogs and gets up with fleas... Though both really agitate me. Ugh let mW stop before I write another chapter....

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm going to give you the benefit of doubt and assume that you completely misunderstood me. It doesn't matter how many good reviews she's had for whatever songs- if the reviews write of anything other than technique, they are definitely subjective.

Criticism =/= bashing, which seems to be what you fail to understand. Also, we're hyper critical of everyone, from Bey to Mimi to Gaga.

    ReplyDelete
  54. 'Beautiful' is boring and uninspired. Lyrically, it's very generic.

You tell Opie and I to stop making assumptions, yet you do the very same? That's hypocrisy. Just wanted to point that out.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lol.... "lays with the dogs and gets up with fleas"... just wait for the beyhive to catch wind of this.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sound uneducated?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Lol, I have my can of raid ready... I think I turned into an antistan...secretly..

    ReplyDelete
  58. It sounds to me that she just fell in love with a crazy fool who touches her too much and she gets off from it. It is not sensual..it is just sexual. That is why I prefer Sandé's version. It gives me that sensual feeling I want.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Lol welcome to the fold! ;-)

Anyway, very well put points Black Robin.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ah, I don't know I think the lyrics and the song needed that sexual tension

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'd go with drawing conclusions based on available fact over assumptions ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I understand. It was nice when she first came out but the booty shaking never stopped. I mean ain't nothing wrong with that... Its just...give your ass a break.... I already have to tell the girls at school that....lol

    ReplyDelete
  63. I agree it work well with the song. But I would argue that beyonce despite the image that is trumpeted by many has tried to nix it up by adding ballads, dance moves, but booty shaking sells. And music is a market place now.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Well we clearly have contrasting thoughts on that department. It's one of the few Xtina songs I actually like.
Did I make an unreasonable assumption, like assuming someone operates on multiple accounts?

    ReplyDelete
  65. ''And music is a market place now''
That's not an excuse. That's the charge! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Point taken. It does sell. I just the world wasn't so shallow. so many dance styles out there... When I was younger...we called dancing dancing an booty shaking gyrating. Booty shaking, twerking, spreading the eagle or what ever you want to call it was never considered dancing by my family... Idk why but that was how I was raised..

    ReplyDelete
  67. They talked about song composition, which is not subjective.

Not so much in this thread, but there have been threads where people have bashed her. Such as the lip synching one.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Reiko called the original, "meh". I then replied saying it is one of the critically acclaimed pop songs of all time. Nothing else. Just saying that a song he finds to be mediocre is hailed as a masterpiece by some.
Second, Beyonce is not a whore. She is married with a child. To suggest she is a whore in my opinion is rather disgusting. Also, I don't know how you managed to gather such an opinion from listening to "Crazy In Love", as the song speaks about professing love for one person.

    ReplyDelete
  69. i know its sad:/

    ReplyDelete
  70. I just say let them shake their asses as much as they want as long as I can still listen to 'listen'

    ReplyDelete
  71. And though some claim they had available facts to accuse me of having multiple accounts on this site, it is rather obvious that they didn't, they instead based the assumption off of... well i don't know what. It's a little delusional actually.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Arthur, I was suggesting that she flaunts her sexuality around not that she's a whore. and it still seemed as an attempt to change Reiko's opinion on the song rather than humbly accept the fact that she doesn't like the "critically acclaimed" song.

I also was suggesting that if her ass stops moving, her music will stop selling. Another note, the constant defense of her is rather a bit much. I can promise you that if Beyonce stood before me this evening and I called her a whore she wouldn't care.

But back to my initial point, I stated the flea comment to show my dislike for the song. I just find it amazing how a simple revamp of the song can change my opinions on it.

But anyway, I hope my point is solved. Do you have any more questions?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Arthur, addressing me as if responding to yourself would NOT fall under the concept ''not responding to eachother''.
The idea is to also not address eachother vicariously.

    ReplyDelete
  74. smeone has hung out with opie to much:-)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Hahaha I'm just going to take that as a compliment. ;-D

    ReplyDelete
  76. I feel proud. Now no one st school can stand to debate with me. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  77. Haha yeah this argument kinda reminds me of 'somebody I used to know'

    ReplyDelete
  78. So you should. But also be prepared for the personal attacks sore losers will unleash.
Also...learning to duck quickly is advisable.
Oh and don't ever use your skill on police and the likes. Sore losers in uniform can seriously screw you over.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Arent you and Authur friends

    ReplyDelete
  80. It doesn't matter, the point is you made assumptions, and then told us not to do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Song composition is definitely subjective. There is no real way to judge composition- you are judging solely on self-set standards.

What is it you consider bashing from that thread? The candid discussion of her personal morals (or lack thereof)?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Just wanted to dispute this tidbit.

You said: "Second, Beyonce is not a whore. She is married with a child. To suggest she is a whore in my opinion is rather disgusting."

That's a terrible mentality. If she was a whore- and keep in mind I'm not suggesting she is one- being a mother should not excuse her, nor is it reasonable to ignore the fact simply because she has given birth.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Personally I don't see how either a marriage license or a child are connected to the profession. I''m sure there are plenty of whores with either or both.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Why hello. I didn't exactly said it was you. You do realize there are other stans right on this site (but thankfully you know you're it)
I guess you better tie the laces, wear the shoes about the description I've mentioned and stop blaming other people for your lack of comprehension. I mean, if it's just me and Opie it'd be fine... You could blame us. But it's clear that most of us perceive you the same way.

    ReplyDelete
  85. And you, have always desperately praised Beyonce to whatever she does, to the point that I bet you worship her with a corner that has an altar dedicated to her and only her.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Arthur, Beautiful only sold well because of Christina's vocal. Ask Beyonce to cover it and I guarantee you it will not even sell half as good.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Opie, how was your other stalker that seemed to have give up? The scooprz, was it? Or something.

    ReplyDelete
  88. He led his team to a very record of 23-3 in his final protective two seasons.
Whether you will need it or not, change is undoubtedly. The bigger the gem, the higher the price it will now fetch.

  89. The thing about music, I really have always thought females were better in the mainstream music industry. Especially as of the years recently.

Whenever I listen to a new piece, I'd usually see if it's catchy. I give any song one chance and that's it. I dare say I'm a bit less biased. Unless it's my favorite divas, then I tend to be a bit more... :\

    ReplyDelete
  90. We are. It doesn't change anything.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Better not stir things up now that we reached an agreement. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  92. You've reached an agreement with Scoopz too? :o

    ReplyDelete
  93. I think it's disrespectful to call women whores, if they are so clearly not a whore. Beyonce has been with Jay Z for over 10 years. She recently had a child. Y'all can play dumb and act like there's nothing wrong with it, but I live in reality. In reality, that comment was out of line and disrespectful.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Well for future reference, you might want to make that thought more clear. "Lays with dogs and gets up with fleas." does not in any way suggest that. It suggests that she sleeps with men and gets diseases, which again, I find disrespectful. I wasn't trying to change any one's, opinion. I was stating that the song is a classic for the most part. Any argument that branched off of that was as much Reiko's fault as it was mine.

Again, you did not make that clear at all in your comment. I suggest you reread what you said. And yes, it's called sex appeal, and almost everyone in mainstream music uses it nowadays. She's my idol, and I will defend her against people calling her a whore, claiming she lip synched, calling her a hypocrite, etc..

And probably not because she's a celebrity and she's used to all the scrutiny.

I didn't have any questions to begin with, so no I don't.

    ReplyDelete
  95. When did I say anything about Beyonce covering Beautiful? Sounds like you're just trying to pick a fight with me.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I didn't say don't make assumptions. I said, "You, like Opie, need to stop coming to these conclusions." "these conclusions", as in unreasonable assumptions.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Ummmm... you congratulated Reiko on arguing with me. It was very obviously referencing our argument.

You guys "perceive" me to incomprehensible because you don't like me and need to come up with petty insults. Makes y'all look a little weak.

That doesn't change the fact that there are people on this site that do in deed bash Beyonce. I never you said you did it extensively like others.

Desperate? Supporting my arguments with facts is desperate? LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Ummmm, you must not be a musician. I will not bear the burden of explaining music theory to you.
Y'all were calling her a fraud, a coward, at one point YOU even resorted to saying she faked her pregnancy.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Yeah, my Mum likes Emeli Sandi. :L

    ReplyDelete
  100. I might as well just jump in here, but dare I say it too, she is dull as ditch water...As a fellow Scot she has done use proud, but no, she will never be the next Annie Lennox...I find it most sad that I actually ended up wanting to hear more of the band...

    ReplyDelete
  101. I was not insinuating that she was a whore. If anything, I was insinuating the original vibe of the song just seemed whoreish to me with the tonality and instrumentation. I was referring to the sound not the image, which of you read, I clearly stated. But the video also does the same. I respect the fact that you defend Beyonce because that shows you care for your idol. But some of the stuff you defend make you seem like a belligerent stan who defends her at all costs even when there is significant evedidence of her hypocrisy, theft, and all.

I like Beyonce. Still, I enjoy many of her songs, and I for one love her tone when she belts (unlike most of the people on this site). There is just a lot of stuff that doesn't add up with Mrs. Beeeeee that I question. I don't come to ill conclusion, of course, but I'm just left wondering. However, my opinion on her music though... That has changed quite a bit. I just wouldn't put Beyonce and Originality in the same sentence anymore.

Again I can understand defending her with points that are valid, but sometimes you come to the defense for rather preposterous things that are relating to Beyonce. As much as I love Jazmine Sullivan or Kimbra, of someone dogged them to a shivering pulp, I seriously wouldn't care because it is not hurting their image. You should feel the same about Beyonce. Nothing we say will ever harm her and they again, are harmless opinions.

I extend out my hand. Leave Stanland and join us in the "Fold of Antistanning" and fight for the better cause... lol

    ReplyDelete
  102. Annie Lennox, the extremely rare coloratura contralto up against a run of the the mill lyric mezzo-soprano with a slighty above average volume capacity??? How dare you even...lol...jk But I get your point. Emeli doesn't bring anything that is too original to the scene.

    ReplyDelete
  103. In other words, you have no leg left to stand on.

Calling her a fraud isn't bashing- it's more of a frank discussion of sensitive subjects. And again with the pregnancy? How many times have I already stated that was a joke??

    ReplyDelete
  104. Its just intresting to watch :)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Actually there are few threads in which I actually praise her. There was her vocal range thread, the voice of the generation thread, and this thread. Every other thread has been me defending her.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Nope, yet another assumption of yours.

Call it what you want, it is bashing to me. A joke of poor taste.

    ReplyDelete
  107. This is the first time you are saying this. You're all over the place dude. I am a belligerent stan. I will proudly admit that! But that's where you're wrong. I have never defended her songwriting credits ordeal, which is in my opinion is the only thing she's done that I despise. Could you please provide examples though?
Not sure what the point of the second paragraph is... that wasn't really ever mentioned before. Sounds like you want to get into an argument with me tbh.

Again, examples? I am clearly more of a stan than you are. You shouldn't tell me what I should feel.
I'm good though... :) I'm extremely happy stanning for Beyonce.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I don't really want to argue. I just want to make my statements plain and simple. And I'm all over the place for having a change in tastes? I can't help that beyonce's music didn't have a great I initial first impression with me. It was different with her senior album. I just don't want you getting bent out of shape over our critics of Beyonce because everyone pop star would get this treatment from me. I'm just outspoken with what I feel and since my views on music have reached a fundamental crossroad, I need to keep my current biases. Again, it is hard to have fair judgement with pop music. It is just a love hate relationship.

Oh, I'll give you examples in the morning... I'm pooped from all these examinations at my school. Excessive brain usage may push me over the edge tonight.

2 more weeks baby! Yeah! Before I can go on fool Stan patrol! But anyways, don't let me views on stanning come between our friendship. Your a Beyonce stan and I'm a generalist antistan.... We can make this work. Lol

  109. i don't think defending an artist is bad especially when they are extremly dogged down though within the relm of reason.

Recently I heard kimbra live it was heavan.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think giving your opinion on a criticism directed at an artist you like is one thing. ''Defending'' is another and silly.

Like Black Robin pointed out...this is just a blog, our opinions are really insignificant and our criticism s hardly likely to be ever seen by the subject. And why would they care if they did, by the longest of odds, see this blog?
Most of these people voluntarily open facebook and twitter accounts. Accounts where people who hate them will deliberately post the worst they can think up, in attempts to hurt them. They don't seem to feel a need to be defended from that. Or they wouldn't open such accounts to any Tom, Dick and Harry.

It's not really fans defending their idol. It's insecure individuals defending their own taste.

    ReplyDelete
  111. i aggre that our comments on this blog will not have an effect on the celeb but i believe that defending an artist idjust an extension of commenters expressing their opinion which is healthy for blogs and provide intresting debates. Now there are people who take it out of the relm of reason, who enter the silly practice of calling names such as cunt or demon, or make up 'facts' as they argue. These are stans as I would define it.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Yes, and that kind of behavior is imo obviously inspired by a petty emotion. Like I said just giving your opinion on a point of criticism is another thing. :-)
Usually fans who do that stay calm and rational and won't make stuff up or try to distract from the point.

    ReplyDelete
  113. And you resort to praising her when you defend her. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Supporting your arguments with facts from 2009 is super desperately. Although, I'll give you credit for the dismissal of the outdated thread, though.

Arthur, I already told you. All (most) of us perceive you the same way. You can tell you whatever you need to get yourself some sleep at night, but for us it's very clear.

You're the weak one for not accepting these "insults". I don't even know how these can be insults? We're just telling you to read it hard to get it to your brain. But you always sound like you have the read the first quarter and ignore the rest and then replying us. We're just advising you at first, but now it's becoming more of an insult because of your ignorance.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I am trying to prove that Beautiful is only famous because of her vocals, not her lyrics, as apposed to you fighting with Reiko about the lyrics. I'm just agreeing with Reiko stating that these songs' lyrics are boring and far too generic.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Arthur, I think you take things way too personally. I don't think anyone here hates you, I know I certainly don't. None of us here even know you well enough to "hate" you. I think what attracts negative attention to your comments is that you come off as combative, particularly when you first started commenting. Unfortunately, that set the tone for how you are now perceived. With that being said, there's nothing wrong with being a dedicated fan of an artist. I can even admit that sometimes you may need to drag someone when they're clearing bashing just for the sake of it, but I also think it's important to make that distinction.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I'm so jealous...........-.-

Actually Annie has the rarest voice type in pop music.

She is the only coloratura contralto that has been seen in popular music,

and Ewa Podles is the only coloratura contralto to emerge in the last 100 something years.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I meant your all over the place in that you said many things until you got your actual point across.

Y'all can keep critiquing her, I'm just saying, I'll defend her.

It was never a problem before and I don't intend it on being one. :)

    ReplyDelete
  120. I didn't mean hate. I meant you guys hate me as much as someone can someone over the internet. You certainly don't like me, which doesn't bother me, I'm just telling it like it is.
And I know, that's because I am extremely combative when talking about Beyonce. Not much else.
But you're right, I do think I was a bit too critical of your critiquing of her. (Still doesn't change the fact that it HAS happened before.)

    ReplyDelete
  121. Do you honestly think you're filling in any lines for me? Again, that insult is getting stale.
I made my comment because you clearly mentioned Beyonce to provoke me.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I used more than just that honey.

All as in you, Opie, Reiko and Mel. Doesn't bother me too much, I think I can sleep just fine at night knowing that you guys think I'm incomprehensible.
Thanks for contradicting yourself and admitting that you are in deed insulting me. Btw, you are the only still doing it. I think the rest of the wolf pack moved on.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Oh dahhling. I mentioned Beyonce to let you know she's not a natural talent. She's one of those artists in the industry that shows that hard work actually pay off. I give her proper credit. But people like Christina Aguilera have beautiful voices handed to them by God/whoever on a golden platter.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Of course you can sleep well, because you can't understand half of the messages we're trying to convey to get it hard-wired into your brain. People set up walls around their heart so they don't get hurt... I don't see the point of you setting up walls around your brain.

    ReplyDelete
  125. So no I'm insecure because I stan? lol
    Yes, I'm breaking the agreement.

    ReplyDelete
  126. If you were referring to me, I didn't make anything up.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Would you like me to argue with you? You're obviously bringing these things up to lure me into an argument.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Again with the stale insults. Try to be original next time. You can think I'm dumb all you want booboo, it's cute.

And whatever the reason they stopped, it's because they wanted to move on. You should follow their lead.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Wrong, how are you going to tell me what MY feelings are about a person? It takes A LOT for me to dislike a person. Also, I never called you incomprehensible, nor do I remember Reiko or Opie calling you that either. At this point, I don't believe I have said anything to you that could be deemed belittling since the Inauguration thread.

    ReplyDelete
  130. The comment was my general view on stans. ANY stans.
You are under the mistaken belief the issue people have with you is your stanning for Beyonce. It is not. We are all quite capable of dealing with stans.

The issue people have is with your refusal to read and then put a little thought in what you read.

It is enormously frustrating to have to dumb down one's every comment to the level of a 5 year old. Since none of us come here to talk to toddlers, we tend to not take the trouble to dumb down our words to that extend.

Your abject refusal to put in an effort, means we end up having to endlessly correct, explain and repeat the simplest of statements.
Your habit to engage in a conversation without any serious willingness to put in any effort is annoying. Especially since you do fake such willigness by asking seemingly interested questions. The answers to which you then proceed to treat like every other comment. You don't read it and/or don't put any effort into
    understanding the answer.

It's not just annoying,it is also rude. As rude as your refusal to come to a civil agreement with someone.
Or to after claiming to come to such an agreement, continue to get digs in at that person where ever you can.

    ReplyDelete
  131. "Imo stanning is not really fans defending their idol. It's insecure
individuals defending their own taste from those who don't share that
taste." This suggests that stans are insecure. There is no way for someone to "stan their opinions". A stan is a person who is an overzealous fan of an artist. To stan is to relentlessly support that artist.
I do want to engage in a conversation with you, but what YOU don't understand is that the things you say don't always translate to the things you mean (a problem I have too). This causes confusion and in turn makes us argue. Also, what you don't understand is that you misinterpret as much as I do. I'm just not a jerk, and I won't continuously repeat the sentiment. So what I want you to understand is that you are just as imperfect at me.

    ReplyDelete
  132. They can do whatever they want. Some just stop because they've kept their end of the deal. I simply continue because I have fun poking at people who can't seem to understand what I'm saying. It makes me feel superior. You know that little ego boost everyone has? You're mine.

Unlike you, I don't care if it's stale, cliche or whatever. As long as you still portray it, it still gives me the right to give a remark about it. If you want it to stop, you gotta change. But I guess we're both too stubborn. I thought I would've made it perfectly clear that I don't care it's a stale "insult" because I've been replying you the same thing over and over and OVER again. Yet you still choose to say the same thing over and over and OVER again. I'm not going anywhere nor stopping this "stale insult" any soon. You're welcome.

    ReplyDelete
  133. You think of it as an argument. I think of it as a fact.

    ReplyDelete
  134. And I'm not going to argue whether not compehending lies with me or with the one who thinks someone lacking the ability to comprehend would be called 'incomprehensible''

    ReplyDelete
  135. Don't speak for me and then lie to boot.
I didn't ''move on''. You pretended to agree to ignore eachother and I was trying to respect that agreement.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Thank you, I've been lurking around for a while, but then realised I could use my Twitter account to link up!

    ReplyDelete
  137. It wasn't but youseem to jump infront of every insult

    ReplyDelete
  138. Its called funneling. But if you want me to do the beginner level table of content method of debate with a clearly defined thesis, abstract, and bibliography, I definitely can start. On top of that, I will start getting "resources" to back of my factual opinions. Additionally, I will analyze everything about my opinion in an easily obliged 40 page research anylisis paper, again backed up by facts.

P.s. I have great expertise at structuring an essay that is far beyond my years so I'm quite versatile. You decide. In fact, I'll write an epilouge, a short story, or a novel to express my harmless ole' opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  139. You must not have written what you meant. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  140. I'm looking forward to that short story or novel. :-)

    Again welcome to the site.

  142. What is the rarest voice type for men? I was just wondering. I don't know much about male vocals apart from what I know about tenors and my limited knowledge on baritones.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I know little to nothing on that area but I'd be guessing...the castrato ;-D

And in all seriousness my guess would be counter tenor.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ-VsKB_tNw&feature=youtube_gdata_player

    ReplyDelete
  144. Just asking. I don't think it was irrational for me to assume it was me.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I wish pop music was like this. Why can't pop singers put this much effort into perfecting their voice? I seriously wish there was a tight bridge between pop music and that operatic sound.

I enjoyed this so much. That countertenor sounded so buoyant and his tone was warm. I for one am not a person who enjoys listening to head voice but this was beyond entertaining for me.

It is hard for little ole' impulsive me to not fangirl over this countertenor. But men, and high head notes that have that pure androgynous tone just move me more than Calixta moved Alcee in the Kate Chopin story the Storm...

    ReplyDelete
  146. Did I put that? I meant to put incompetent. Still not a very good word to describe the act of not comprehending, but at the time I couldn't find one. I'm writing on my phone for some of these posts. But still, are you saying you have never miscomprehended anything I have ever said? A miscomprehension you made on my previous post was assuming I said that the problem lied in one of us. I admitted that I have done so as well.

YET another one is you assuming I said Reiko, BlackRobin, Mel and you have miscomprehended. I only said you honey (but I did say BlackRobin did it when I addressed him).

Everybody else? I didn't know you could speak for everybody else.

The thing you need to realize, and please pay attention to this point, is that miscomprehension occurs very often. Why? Because all minds work differently. What you want to say may not always come out right, and even if it does, it may come out a different way to all people. We are only human, we are not perfect, and we make mistakes.
If that's what you meant to say, than I misunderstood. I still feel offended at you suggesting I am insecure though.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Doesn't change the fact that you talk a long time to say what you meant though.

I don't want you to do anything but state what you mean, I don't believe I am asking for too much. But the other option sounds like a whole lotta work for nothing.

You can do that... just doesn't expect to respond similarly.

    ReplyDelete
  148. That was the vibe I was getting. But thanks for clearing that up.
And Mel... I never said you did! LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  149. So you think what you stated above is fact?
Now that's what I call stanning!

Still not going to argue about whether Beyonce is better than Christina. How's the Lotus World Tour doing by the way?

Alright lemme stop, just needed that nice bit of shade in there.

    ReplyDelete
  150. In my defense, you triggered it. Shortly after we made the agreement, you commented on one of Reiko's posts that clearly insulted me.
That was not why. The reason why is because of the previously mentioned incident . What was that you said, don't speak for me?

    ReplyDelete
  151. That first paragraph makes you sound a little creepy tbh. Could your ego really be so shallow that poking fun at a 15 year old over the internet gives it a boost? Yikes, I'll keep you in my prayers.
Me calling your insult stale was not me trying to make you stop insulting me, it was me showing you how unoriginal you were. Has that come through to you now?

    ReplyDelete
  152. I support what I say TBH. I say all that extra stuff to make sure my points gets across. I makes sure my metaphors, alliterations, hyperboles, and analogies all make sure my points get expressed the first time through. My transitions are important to me. I can't jump from a topic of debate to another, if the initial topic of debate arouses a point that must be established. That would just be wrong on my part. As of lately, I do take what I write seriously, and practicing structure for writing even in these simple comments can lessen confusion but Arthur, sometimes you need to analyze these comments before you reply. I kind of have been silent about this whole debacle, but you need to analyze these comments as carefully as possible.

With every word I read, I constantly think 'is there a double meaning', 'am I comprehending it correctly', 'or is their some allegorical message to the comment'. I recently had to do a literary analysis on a paper for my English 1102 class and my professor, though kind, is quite strict when it comes to literature. She drilled me, making sure I know every detail to everything when I have an opinion. She told me that I need to back it up with factual evidence if necessary.

It just doesn't hurt to sit down, and treat a comment, especially if you know it is from a person who exhibits astounding intellectual prowess, like a thesis that can either be proven or not. When it comes down to a point where the debate has spun around so much it literally dug a pit in the bandwidth associated with the network, one must respectfully call a draw.

The arguing will honestly go nowhere except further underground. By human nature, when an argument has no gain, frustration sets in. Once frustration sets in, a more personal perspective is taken out that is when verbal blows can be thrown. My professor said that on any type of forum that is a big no-no.

Now, to draw my my final statement... I respect this website too much to stan for any singer. There is no other website like it on the planet and I don't take that for granted by just having a simple one sided perspective. All singers are fair game on Diva Devotee and though I have my biases, I try not to act upon them. As a result, I will ultimately not stand for stanning of any kind.

With that being stated, stanning goes nowhere, and will lead to a bigger e-altercation. Stanning wastes bandwidth. And most importantly, stanning demeans, disrespects, and defeats the purpose of this site. This site is for fair choice not for someone to hopelessly defend a singer who is so well established that defending them just makes one look naive.

Sorry for it being so long, but I had multiple points to address. I hope it is well perceived. :)

    ReplyDelete
  153. Oh please ''honey'' don't presume to lecture me. And don't try to distract from the subject. I don't intend to play along with either.

In the meantime you just admitted you did not know the meaning and correct use of a word you used several times over the last two days. You also admit that you therefor are the one not writing what you mean. And you admit you at no time could be bothered to look up the meaning of the word nor the word which WOULD be the one you meant.

You in effect just demonstrated exactly what I not only actually wrote but also MEANT to write.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I never said you didn't. I just said that particular instance when you wanted to say in Crazy In Love, Beyonce sounds like a whore, it came out the wrong way.

I frankly do not have the time to analyze everything I read and consider every possible perspective. Life at boarding school is much more pressed for time than a regular teen life. What I do is read things once, and respond. If I misunderstood something, oh well. I'm only human.

I completely agree with the 4th paragraph. But what you guys sometimes don't understand is that the failure to communicate is a two way avenue.

I respect the 5th paragraph. However, the only thing I'm one sided about is Beyonce. Perhaps a few other singers too, but Beyonce is the only noticeable one.

That was a very well thought out response don't me wrong, but there is just no way I will not stan for Beyonce. I'm sorry. :(

    ReplyDelete
  155. When mentioning Robin, Mel, and me, she said absolutely nothing about comprehension. She was talking about you claiming that we failed to write what we meant.

Somebody should take a trip back to kindergarten.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Well, that is fine. I'll just take my countermeasures to the fact. But I wasn't inferring that you were inferring that I don't support what I say. I was just providing the opener I needed to round off everything I said. But back to the point, please stan in moderation because it really drives others off the deep end. I can't express that enough.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Okay? Thank you for clarifying I guess...
That was an example of me not writing what I meant.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Indeed, why can't popsingers when so many singers in many other genres do? My theory...because most popsingers aren't in it for the music but for the fame. And obviously ability is wholy unconnected to fame. So why bother when you could spent that time partying. ;-)

Anyway, glad you enjoyed Jarrousky as well.

I'm afraid you lost me with the literary reference. :-(

    ReplyDelete
  159. As far as I'm concerned that is the most prevalent subject and the one that should be discussed. But like I've pointed out before, it is in your nature disregard things when you know you are wrong.

I didn't say I didn't know the meaning of the word... I said my phone's spellcheck system caused my typo to written as incomprehensible. Actually scratch that, I didn't say this directly, but that's what I implied, when I said, "I'm writing on my phone for some of these posts." I thought you would understand that, but apparently you didn't.
Well am I not a stan? You said stans are insecure. By transitive property you called me insecure. If you say Americans are dumb, is it "insecure" of me to assume you were addressing me? No, because you were addressing me. You shouldn't be making such ridiculous generalizations.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I don't think it's my stanning driving any one crazy. If you look at most of these arguments, they get to the point where they're not even about Beyonce.

As does antistanning my friend... Anyways, I don't think there's a problem if there is ONE artist I am closed minded about. I have an open mind for 99% of things. I'm not impending on anyone's internet liberties by stanning, and to suggest that is ludicrous.

Yes, I am quite stubborn, but I do agree with some of the things you said. The one thing I will NOT do though is stop stanning.

    ReplyDelete
  161. And you have said that "try to be original" for the past few posts and even other posts. Has it occurred to you that some things don't need originality?

What I feel you're trying to imply:
You see a lot of people eating something with a spoon and fork. Do you say "Oh dear! look at that. Everyone's eating with a spoon and fork. How unoriginal. Let me use my feet to eat instead. Look, I'm so original!"

Somethings are meant to stay there, arthur. My ego isn't shallow. It just hasn't seen so much stupidity and idiocy in one person it has to seize the moment to enjoy it. ;)

With the amount of idiocy in you, it's too much for ANY age. You're not excused just because you're "15". How can I not learn to enjoy it?

    ReplyDelete
  162. Oh Arthur, it doesn't matter if her Lotus tour is successful or not. She'll not be allowed in my country. So please, do do some research before you try to "provoke" me with your seemingly pointless pokes. For me even then that I prefer to sit at home listen to music and dance around lil' bit.

Whereas Beyonce, she can continue evolving from here

    ReplyDelete
  165. It was the combination of voice and physical appeal that meshed to so well together. I enjoyed that more than what I should have.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I really agree on that note. Pop singers have their priorities twisted and put music second.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Perhaps you should stop using spell check. Along with stop coming up with endless excuses that hold no water.

I am not going to explain to you for a third time how the wordsI wrote mean what I meant to say. Not what you fail to read and comprehend.

I expressed my view of the psychology causing stanning. You are free to disagree, free to bring forth arguments why you disagree. You are also free to feel offended and free to go on and on about how offended you feel by my view.
The latter is fortunate for me. As the longer you go on about it, the more emphatically you make my case.
Unfortunate for you as the more you make my case, the more you look not just insecure but downright foolish as well

    ReplyDelete
  169. But I would have to say. A man should sound like a man. But then again, who am I to judge. He has talent and looks. I have nothing more to say. Period.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GziGisAYQbw&feature=youtube_gdata_player

    ReplyDelete
  171. Well, it was just a guess as far as counter-tenors go. But I'm pretty sure no male singers today have been castrated and you will therefor be hard pressed finding any castrato in today's world. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  172. You need to make up your mind. You can't have it both ways. If you want to treat people your senior as equals ( or even attempt to lecture them) then you have to expect to be treated as such as well.
If on the other hand, you want people to respect your supposed age, you will have to do the same in return.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Okay. I didn't expect his modal voice to sound like that. It's different but it's still good.

My ultimate soft-spot for a man with a voice is Duncan James from the pop group Blue.

An example of his manly raspy voice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZG3lRqN6lw

Again, his low notes makes my fantasy ovaries explode. I could imagine making love to this bisexual man and listening to his sexy voice moan and groan. Oh dear, got a little carried away. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  174. And maybe some counter-tenors are castrated but yet choose to be seemingly labelled as "counter-tenors". ;)

    ReplyDelete
  175. Castration is not allowed Ricky. Really, there are no castrati anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Lol I expected something way raspier. Like Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen...even Chris Rea.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Oh, I've heard Leonard and Chris. But the problem with it is that I don't like it too raspy. He has the optimum amount which I surrender myself to. Hahahahaha.

    ReplyDelete
  178. I know. But you can't guarantee 100%. You may subject it to law. But maybe some... just some... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  179. Well, unless I personally check it...not a 100%. But if they grew up in the west...99% for sure. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  180. It's a very personal thing for sure. I just think raspier when someone uses ''raspy'' to describe a voice. Guess for me the optimum is raspier. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  181. Ahahahaha! Oh gosh. You'd go through so many of those little cuties? Ahahahah.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Well, we both have our own opinions. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  183. Not me personally. I'll hire someone. You can submit your application at Checkoutthatcounterenor.com :-D :-D

And Ricky honey... there is no Lotus World Tour... that was the joke... xD (yet you call me stupid).
Telling me to do research because I made fun of Christina Aguilera's floppage of an era is again not a very smart thing to do.
Anyways your last post proved what I was saying to someone who shall remain nameless before, everybody miscomprehends.
And gurrrrl, you don't even wanna start this.
    http://media.tumblr.com/f0f5400950ff178879729a7876785a01/tumblr_inline_mkvt72Z3iz1qz4rgp.gif

    ReplyDelete
  186. I've been saying that for the past few posts, but you've been bringing up that "you're stupid" argument for the past month when we have argued.

Nice shade, I'll give that to you. But I'm not surprised, you like stale things. Christina Aguilera's vocal chords for example.

That's a terrible analogy. How can you compare eating something to insulting someone. What I want to say is you've gotten your point across, and there's no need for reiterating it every damn post.

If you I think I'm stupid for misunderstanding some posts, then by your logic, everyone in the world stupid. We've all miscomprehended things before. Additionally, you don't know me well enough to assess my intellect.

  187. Again, Arthur. I did not even thought that you are stupid when I was typing these comments. But outside the forum, you should know. The one thing in my head the whole time when i'm typing this was "Is he going to get it in that thick skull of his?"

Yes, I rather like those stale vocal chords of Christina's. Her voice is still much better compared to the boring voice Beyonce has.

  188. Arthur, I already said. Lotus world tour has nothing to do with me. Even if there is or isn't one. I already told you, either way I won't be able to see her, so I won't care.

Please, enlighten me, when did I actually called you stupid? Also, do not include evidences that you "assume" I meant that I was calling you stupid. Oh dear.

"Telling me to do research because I made fun of Christina Aguilera's floppage of an era is again not a very smart thing to do." Since when did I ask you do a research? LOLMAO. Again, stop putting words in my mouth. She hasn't failed. The amount of advertising she put into her album, compared to Beyonce, is relatively little.

There's a difference between castrati's voice and that of a countertenor's, a castrato is basically a child's voice with adult resonators, it's quite an odd sound.

IMO I think Through The Rain is better than Hero.

I like that Mariah brings the voice to a climax with no help from the instrumental, it's really the only song in her catalogue where you see Mariah build a song with only her vocals.

I agree with the After Tonight comment, but I disagree with the "I Only Wanted" bit. "I Only Wanted" and "My All" have two completely different themes and different soundscapes as well.

  192. Ah, Thanks for clearing that up. I've nothing against their voice, but let's just say I'd rather not listen to a man with a child's voice. So I never bothered to youtube or anything.

  193. You do know colors vary a lot within a vocal category, right? Be careful what you wish for, Ricky. I hardly think I sound like a child! ROFL.

  194. And yes, Opie, countertenors are possibly the rarest male voices today.

  195. Of course their characteristics vary a lot ._.
    I'm not THAT shallow ._.
