Mariah Carey is clearly working on restoring that voice. Praise Saint Cecilia!
Not only has she been showing it off live at her concerts at the Beacon Theatre this month, but she also had it out in force during the taping of her Hallmark special, Merriest Christmas.
One of the most startling things about this showing is how many of the songs start off with an a cappella-ish intro. New Mariah usually likes to hide between walls of harmonies and instrumentation to get through a song. However, the Mariah on this special is out in the front, finally working again for our affection and praise. There's even a point, at the start of Here Comes Santa Claus where she says "turn me up"!
The Diva is clearly out to stick it to those who are still circulating that performance of All I want For Christmas. And trust me, she needs to because the general public think she's vocally washed up. (This revelation comes courtesy of the drunken conversations I had with strangers on Friday night about the Diva.)
Sure, some will trot out the "dubbed", or "lipped" line. To thee I say, gaze upon Mariah's flared nostrils. Ain't no way she's doing that for fun or to look cute. I'm no idiot though, and it's probably not 100% live. Still, that doesn't take away from how good she sounds for 95% of the time, when the microphone is on.
