[Free For All Friday]

It's that time of the week again: Welcome to another Free For All Friday!  Today one is babysitting and blogging! Look at me multitasking (or committing some form of neglect).  Possibly a bit of both! We'll leave it for the courts to decide.

As per usual, the rules:
  • Try not to get too perverted-this site still needs to basically be "safe for work".
  • If somebody starts a controversial subject, try keeping it civil when dealing with it. If things get out of hand please flag the conversation.
  • It would be nice if it stuck to music, but it's not a requirement! So talk about news, current events, how you're getting your hair done next time you hit the hairdresser! Whateves, really!
  • No nasty comments aimed at other users.
Inappropriate hugs to all y'all and wishing you an awesome weekend!

  1. I usually don't like voices like Tori Kelly's, but for some reason I'm starting to like her:

  7. Natalia Kills is such an underrated singer but at the same time I'm glad she's not majorly big because the commerce always destroys a singers creativity... I hope you got what i mean haha

  8. My guilty pleasure, these girls are autotuned to hell, but I enjoy watching them perform, and their visual consistency is great: http://www.jpopsuki.tv/video/Perfume---1mm/623c95ae935400520ba744d102d12f37

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well, maybe you can pick it up again? Or switch to the sax?
I know I wish I could claim 5 years of lessons in some instrument. Don't let it go to waste Jahmal! :-)

I don't know about the other three but I know the one with the long blond hair is a classically ( conservatory) trained saxophone player. I pretty much presume so are the others.

Anyway, glad at least one other person enjoyed this .

  18. I hate the concept of guilty pleasure, you don't have to be ashamed of liking an artist.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh put a sock in it already ,you foul mouthed child.

    ReplyDelete
  20. LOL I don't know whether to up or downvote that.
I didn't like the weight reference and I think first few years Mariah was awesome. But on the other hand, I tend to agree the last decade for sure , she has been overrated. Or rather rated really for the first decade instead of the present.

    ReplyDelete
  21. You're right. I'm not ashamed. All of my friends know I love J-pop, and poke fun at me, but I still listen to it and enjoy it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. LOL I used to get that from my Heavy Metal friends over my love for Country music.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What happens when the sound system breaks? A true DIVA knows how to deal with it. Mariah is still the best. Watch, learn, and die after that:

    ReplyDelete
  24. LOL I used to have some friends that were into Heavy Metal as well. I actually appreciated the musical diversity among our group. It got me to listen to music that I would have never listened to otherwise, and vice versa. I guess that's why I Like coming to DD as well. DD turned me into a fan of Florence and the Machine, Lana, and Jessie Ware. Also, the people who frequent this site put me on to other random music. BTW I don't think I ever thanked you for linking me to Alison's Paper Airplane. I really like that song.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Really? Many singers can sing without that earpiece as well.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes, that's what I loved too. This blog and the people on it got me into Lana, Kelly Clarkson, Goldfrapp, Florence and via a winding road Miley Cyrus and several others.
Glad you liked Paper Airplane. If it was pop music Alison's name would be on the song credits LOL.
Since it was her talking to RL Castleman about what was going on in her life, making him a grilled cheese sandwich ( and eating it herself hahaha) which lead to him writing that song.

Is it just me or has Demi's voice changed?

    ReplyDelete
  33. That song would be a new hit if it were real lol.

    ReplyDelete
  34. that's a diva, man. She's more than a singer, she's a creative person.

    ReplyDelete
  35. All I can say is that she went from light lyric to full lyric. I love the tones on her belts. So dark and haunting....especially in this song. It is like her belts retain their color of her lower register all the way up to E5. That is quite nice tonal uniformity.

    ReplyDelete
  36. LOL Except like every time I see Mariah in a position like that, all she can manage is a few notes and words. No full song.

I really have to thank you Luis, for helping me realize Mariah is no longer what she used to be and certainly not near the artist I always thought she was.

She doesn't bother to take care of her instrument, from what I hear, never bothered to learn how to read and write music in her 25 year career, hasn't delivered a truly world class and truly live performance in years, can't sing a full song that isn't one of her own, doesn't even bloody know the "ear thing" is called an in-ear monitor and can't sing a single song without that "ear thing".

    ReplyDelete
  37. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2EIXAeU8frM&feature=player_embedded&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D2EIXAeU8frM%26feature%3Dplayer_embedded# hey dd have you seen the acoustic version of Flatline?? They sound better here than on the studio versions. The harmonies on the chorus are great.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lol yes and then she would discuss how much of an artist she is interviews, and describe what the songwriting process was like knowing damn well that the only thing she wrote was her name on the liner notes. Actually, I was looking through her discography the other day, and I noticed that she hardly ever writes her own songs. It just goes to show that you don't need to write all of your own songs to be regarded as a great/ legendary artist.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm fairly sure she sang a couple of songs with her in-ear monitor playing up at this concert, but it got to the point where she was fed up that no one behind the scenes were getting it done so she took a few minutes out of her concert to get it fixed. And what do you mean by can't sing a full song that isn't one of her own?

    ReplyDelete
  40. lol! Go, man. Smash those hoes!

    ReplyDelete
  41. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJuWlMFToNo The music video for Ariana Grande's "Baby I", it's fun and a cute throwback. There's a little dancing going on and I am still eternally in love with her male backup dancers. (All comments from people named Luiz will be ignored.)

    ReplyDelete
  42. hoes are real fun. lol

    ReplyDelete
  43. She has removed her tonsils. And that can alter the voice to some degree.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Rofl oh my litle luis.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Love it! She needs more exposure and pushing by her label! She was criminally underrated with her last release, lets hope that changes!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I meant what I said.
Good for you that you are "fairly sure". Unfortunately that has little validity over what I could see with my own eyes in that video.
After spending a while paying attention to the big names, I am very sorry to say, to quote a friend, " she is but a pale shadow of her former self".

But this seems to be a case of the naked emperor, or rather empress.
Much as it saddens me, because I too thought very highly of Mariah based on her early years, anybody seeing reality today can see that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So it seems Katy did indeed trounce Gaga in the comeback chart battle, interesting but unsurprising!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm still not sure what you mean by can't sing a full song that isn't her own. Do you mean she can't improvise a full song on the spot? Or did you mean she can't cover other people's songs spontaneously? Either way, I found it a little strange in the paragraph you wrote, which is why I asked in case I was interpreting it wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I meant she doesn't seem to know any other song besides her own well enough to be able to sing from start to finish...or at least three quarters through.
It went to the fact that I have seen her only once even try and that was New York New York and she didn't even know the lyrics to that one.
It went to the fact that I don't see any signs of her caring enough about music rather than her image and status.
But maybe I am wrong and since her stint as judge she did actually learn some other songs well enough to be able to just sing it on the spur of the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hmm, I'd have to agree that she hasn't ever really sang another song in full on the spur of the moment. There was a short lullaby (i think) that she sung in Arabic during her Moroccan concert though, but other than that I can't recall any moments of the top of my head.
But I also don't think she's had many chances, per se, to demonstrate this ability. Simply because unless it's in some sort of jazz bar like she was in last time, there aren't exactly many appropriate places where one can simply sing a full length song on the spur of the moment. I don't think I've ever seen any singer spontaneously sing a full song. But since I assume you have, I would appreciate it if you could provide a link or two.

  51. Norways pop princess, Tone Damli latest single:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX-noK3bvwQ

The song is a little boring until the two minute mark. After that the song explodes into a beaty of harmonies, instruments and some pretty decent belting. I really love the heartbeat drums in the background. Reminds me of leona lewis- keep bleeding
I would say it's worth four minutes of your life :)

I could link you to a dozen more when it comes to bluegrass and stuff like that. Those guys jam with each other after concerts and at festivals all the time.
They also will work with other artists on their albums at the drop of a hat. They got loads of songs in their heads

    ReplyDelete
  54. Man, I really appreciate you for tring to stop the ignorance deluge. But blind and deaf hoes can't be cure anyway. Haters gonna hate. Mariah is a creative person, Katy Perry, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston (yeah I lover but...), Jennifer Lopez, Aretha, Ariana (oh god!) they will die as singers, Mariah will live forever in the music indutry. Paul Mccartney and Mariah are the only people in the world to top the charts as performers and SONG writers (number one songs all around the world) - This is HUGE for a female entertainer in this tough business. People care enough about Mariah's look, image and diva behaviour, but forget how creative she is. To me, her unknown songs are the best. If haters really knew Mariah Carey, they would be ashamed to even speak her name.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yeah. Watch Mariah improvising a song to prize Marrocos, the place that inspired her son's name:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9aqGMJJr7U

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yeah she has a beautiful voice I love her improvisations.

    ReplyDelete
  57. ROFL the only delusional individual are you luis.
"Paul mcCartney and Mariah are the only people in the world to top the charts as performers and SONG writers"
Hahaha that level of ignorance is just too too funny.

    ReplyDelete
  58. You don't have to slam others to lift your favorite up.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yes, they are, you hoe. Most number one's songs as performers and song writers, U ignorant.

    ReplyDelete
  60. thank u for the advise, but some need to be bashed.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Is it just me or did her low notes improve just a slight bit bcause of the removed tonsils?

    ReplyDelete
  62. I just keep wondering how you think you can judge songwriting luis? Your vocabulary seems awfully limited.

"most" is a whole different claim than "the only two".
"The only two" is as ignorant a statement as I have ever heard.
Even if you try to back up that hilariously delusional claim by listing a bunch of people who happen to not write their own songs.

And rofl at you now after all your protestations, listing Ariana in the list of Houston, Aretha, Lopez, Dion and Mariah when the girl never had any top charting songs. ( unless you seriously want to count that Ukranian #1)

Cute how you forgot all about Madonna, Gaga, Adele, Streisand, Dolly Parton, kelly Clarkson, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Florence Welch, janet Jackson, Pink,Gwen Steffani and given some time I can come up with a few more women who topped charts singing songs they also had writing credits on.
And that's just a couple of women..let's talk that other of "the only two" mcCartney.

How about Robert Plant, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Eminem, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash,Kenny Rogers to name just a few of the males.
You poor sod, that's what you get for being obsessed with a pale shadow of former greatness to the point where you can only prop her up by calling anybody else a "hoe" etc

And I do so wish you'd speak to your momma about your issues with her profession.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Any Marina fans?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Plenty. You will locate them most easily by checking out her vocal profile. ;-)
I sure am one of them and I know Stuey is because he is the one who turned me on to Marina.
All of the above provided you mean Marina Diamandis. Nor Marina Abramovich or Marina the pivotal first season of the L word character. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  65. Christina Aguilera, Evanescence, Queen, Bon Jovi, Simple Plan, Michael Buble... Mariah and Paul McCartney aren't definetly the only ones to own that merit. I disagree with the ones that say that Mariah is overrated, she definetly deserves that recognition, but that doesn't mean the rest of the singers are crap.

By the way, since you Luiz seem to know every Mariah song, could you tell me any song of her that doesn't talk about love? I'd really want to hear one of them (Not saying this with second intentions, I really do mean it)

    ReplyDelete
  66. kkkkk lol

Those can't even get close to Mariah and Paul's success as song writers.

Mariah is music royalty... deal with it, hoe.

Why u still breathing, bitch? lol

  70. I love Demi and after her tonsil removement, her voice just got better. It's about time we get some decent singers in the industry. The original Divas are not what they used to be, the singers in the music industry about 4 years ago were awesome but we lost what could have been the vocal mastermind of the generation (Amy Winehouse), and now we have Adele, Beyonce, Demi, Ariana, Pink, Christina, and some others. I don't care anymore about copy-cats I just care about the MUSIC. Please, I pray that music continues to get better from here. Carly Sonenclar, Diamond White, Melani Amaro (that girl has some set of pipes), and many more are waiting patiently for their time to shine.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Eeeeew, heterosexuality....

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm so ready. She got a vocal coach and she's been dance training a lot, so I'm 100% ready for a pre-2007 comeback for Beast Mode Britney.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Our body isn't prepare for that level of slayage tbh... *stan vocabulary*

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'm gonna be very honest, I'm still waiting for the day she recreates the 2007 VMAs and kills it. The actual "bow down bitches, I'm taking my crown back" moment.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Your momma needs my 3 $ Sweetie. That's why.
And you just proven my point once again about the dulsional state you live in. Are you seriously putting Mariah and mcCartney in the same league as song writers or as singers?
For fuck sake luis, mcCartney is the most average of average singers where as Mariah used to be the best ..a decade ago.
On the other hand, Mariah isn't near the songwriter succes mcCartney is. Not even close sweetie. Not even close!

    ReplyDelete
  76. ROFL I can just picture that.

I think she only co wrote (with her brother) two songs. Both christmas songs and both a bit off the beaten path. More sexy, funnily enough.
And she has writing credits shared with Sting on My Ain True Love ..I think.

    ReplyDelete
  77. LOL Just remembered Sting as well. Talking about successful singer songwriters.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'll wait for album sales before I declare the war won though, but you're totally right about the battle

    ReplyDelete
  79. I hate liking her knowing there are other fans like you. I would advise not calling them hoes.

    She sounded great here though.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think Katy definitely rules singles. She has the power to get on the radio like that and songs from Teenage Dream are still playing everyday, because she appeals so much to a wide range of the pop audience, from casual radio listeners to her hardcore fans. But I think such a massive part of Gaga's fanbase is her Little Monsters, and they're just the type of superfans that will buy the whole album and buy ten copies for their friends and request it on the radio every second, so I think Gaga might rule album sales. I'm not saying either is better than the other, but it's just their type of fans.

    ReplyDelete
  81. U really love me, man. Forget about me, pls.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Keep on trying. Maybe someday sombody will really believe the things you write.

When you hoes singers get more than 170 awards as a song writers, they would be able to reach Mariah's level. LOL Bow down, hoe!

    ReplyDelete
  83. that happened after her "breakdown", so she had the time ro rest her pipes. The Glitter Era was vocally perfection.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Perfection is a strong word. But she did sound spectacular.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Although I hate to agree with Luiz, Paul McCartney was an excellent singer who was really underrated and had an amazing range (A1-G5, and there's some videos of him hitting a A6 but I don't think that one counts)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Oh sweetie your delusions are truly hilarious.
Get back to me when Mariah gets The national medal Of Arts or is honored by the Kennedy center, gets inducted in any songwriting halls of Fame or achieves something like this " In 2012 Parton's recording was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry
list of sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or
aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United
    States."

The vast majority of Mariah's "170" awards are for sales numbers or ones that delusional sods such as yourself get to vote on.
When it comes to the Grammies, THE most prestigious music award and one voted on by ones peers..Dolly got nominated 45 times ( more than any other female) and won 8.

Mariah got nominated 34 times and got 5.

My favorite singer got nominated 41 times and got 27. (and she's the same age as Mariah btw )

" She is also the most awarded singer and the most awarded female artist in Grammy history"
And at the time of her winning her first, she was the second youngest ever to win a Grammy.

It really makes no bloody difference how many times you call them or me a "hoe" or a "bitch" ..the facts remain the same.

    Bummer ain't it? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  87. LOL as we all know by now, the woman with the widest range was also an incredibly crappy singer.
Range has absolutely nothing to do with how good a singer one truly is. McCartney isn't underrated. He is just as a singer pretty boring and can't compete with the great male vocalists.

    ReplyDelete
  88. kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk lol Mariah beats those hoes in a second. You're so pressed right now. Hoe Hoe Hoe!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Nope, but you do exist. :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. What are your thoughts on this people??

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  94. Seems like nobody cares Anthony. I listened to a bit when you first posted it but decided not to respond as there is nothing positive to be said about it imo.
It's generic music and the singer sounds like she needs a studio and it's equipment to sound half way decent. Not my cup of tea at all.
But since you asked. And since I wanted you to know your post was not completely ignored, I decided to post a response anyway.
    Sorry I can't be more positive. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  95. LOL seeing as that is pretty much my response to Mariah these days, I wouldn't even see it if she turned her back on me...I'd already moved on myself.

Still feel Beautiful should have been this Summer's big hit though, if that helps your desperately pressed ego any.

Aside from that, sweetheart..you are in dire need of some therapy. I don't think you even realize at this point anymore that you are not Mariah, are not friends with Mariah and not even on speaking terms with Mariah. All you are to her dear, is an dollar in her bank account and an ass in a seat. And if she did know you in anyway, even just from your postings ..she might possible even think a very huge Ass,
Your delusional state must be very deep, the way you seem to think you nevertheless can speak for her and predict what she would say.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hahaha sweetie, my relevance is actually bigger than yours. Seeing as I got the facts on my side, you only got delusional beliefs.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Mariah isn't as relevant as she used to be. She is still very famous. But not what she used be.

Her new album might not rise the charts as they used to. (which isn't a bad thing, chart success doesn't equate to talent)

    ReplyDelete
  98. I really hope she puts in work with that vocal coach and he doesn't do what happened in the first place, I love Britney and her vocal versatility, but I'm not gonna lie, I wanna hear some full on SANGing from her...

  102. ROFL I forgot about that one Ruru. Something we can still praise Mariah for..bringing that word back into conversation. I really have to start using it more often.

I didn't count the times. I just flagged his hiny every time he used it regarding me or some other poster.

  104. Btw Ricki-Lee is very talented check this video out....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUy9G_5X1Iw she has a beautiful tone in her voice

  105. Haha, no there was actually no sarcasm. I really enjoyed the Alison Krauss one. Is it from a documentary or a tour DVD?

Yea after watching these I think get what you mean, but I still feel like Mariah still has a few performances that she's done mostly off the cuff, even if it's not to this degree of spontaneity. For example, she was a special guest one night on Patti Labelle's tour, and they covered Cheryl Lynn's Got To Be Real. I'm sure they fit in a rehearsal or two of sorts, but it seems in general quite a spontaneous showing.

  106. Yes, it was from a little tv documentary following Alison Krauss and Union Station on a European tour a bit.

I will check out that Mariah video in a bit.

In truth, in spite of my critique on Mariah, I really like her. I am just thoroughly annoyed with Luiz's stanning and constant use of such terms as he uses for other singers than Mariah and posters here.

  109. I checked out a few more of Alison Krauss' songs, and I gotta say her voice is unbelievably tender and emotive. She made me like that Ronan Keating song, When You Say Nothing At All, which I've always considered horrifically bland and overrated.

And I agree, stanning is one of the worst things to come out of the rise of social media.

  110. LOL Yes, it may not be popular knowledge...her voice, but she sure didn't get all those accolades she got for nothing.

I listened to the Mariah-Patti video and I enjoyed it ( which is mainly a surprise to me because I am really not a fan of Patti's tone to put it mildly).
Like I said, I do enjoy Mariah a lot and I really thought Beautiful is a great song. For me the best I heard this summer.

But I think my points of criticism stand. I usually just don't care about those. Until this annoying bugger shows up with his "hoe" and "bitch" and ridiculously incorrect claims.

  111. Since Luiz doesn't seem to want to answer your question, I thought I'd just provide a few links. Since you seem genuinely curious.

In terms of her singles, Vision of Love, despite having love in the title, is actually about her faith and joy at finally "making it" in the industry.

Other singles that don't talk about love including There's Got to Be A Way, Make It Happen, Hero, One Sweet Day, When You Believe, Can't Take That Away, Reflections, Through The Rain, Bye Bye.

You can also include songs like It's Like That/Migrate, although that's kinda generic in theme in another way (party song).

In terms of album cuts/b-sides, which imo tend to be more personal and address non-romantic issues better, some examples are: The Wind, Looking In, Close My Eyes, Outside, Petals, Sunflowers for Alfred Roy, Fly Like A Bird, I Wish You Well, Languishing (Interlude), 100%, Almost Home, Imperfect, My Saving Grace.

I added links for just a select for of those songs, but they're pretty much all on youtube and easily found if you want to search them up.

  113. Agree with everything except some of the last paragraph.

Mariah takes exceptional care of her voice. According to herself, she sleeps with 20 humidifiers in order to simulate a steam room because Luther Vandross told her it was good for her vocal cords. She also doesn't tour as much as other divas because she doesn't want to strain her voice- this was a bigger issue for her back in the ninties when she still had a voice.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I heard otherwise..from her avid fans actually. It seems inspite of or maybe because of (LOL) those twenty humidifiers, she often doesn't take enough rest but also drinks more alcohol than supposedly is good for a voice.
(the latter I btw am not really buying myself...the effects of alcohol on a classical singer..sure. On the standard of performance of a pop singer, not really buying it at all)

  119. LOL Now that you say. But that's Divas for you. I always felt she was kinda based on Streisand from back in the days Streisand was referred to as La Streisand.

  120. Since I couldn't find any on YouTube, I decided to make a vocal range of Liz Gillies. Not exactly sure if I got everything right but I tried my best! I think she is an awesome singer but she needs to showcase a bit more, her lows and mid belts are nice, especially with added vibrato. I'm gonna take a gander and says she's a Mezzo.
